OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD

Good food, great conversation and loads of laughs –that’s what family dinners are made of. If busyschedules are making it hard for your family to pencilin regular meals, take a ‘time out’ to consider all the

benefits of gathering around the dinner table because familydinners are about more than just sharing a meal.

Did you know that eating dinner frequently withyour children reduces their risk of substance abuse?Researched by The National Center on Addiction andSubstance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University consistentlyfinds that the more often children eat dinner with theirfamilies, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use drugs. The conversations that go hand-in-hand with dinner willhelp you learn more about your children’s lives and betterunderstand the challenges they face.

CASA created FAMILY DAY – A DAY TO EAT DINNER WITHYOUR CHILDREN in 2001, as a national effort to promote familydinners as an effective way to reduce substance abuse amongchildren and teens. Family Day is celebrated on the fourthMonday in September; this year it is tomorrow, September26. Family Day is not just for families. It is a day for all tocelebrate, including businesses, unions, religiousorganizations and community groups. The symbolic act ofregular family meals should be promoted and celebratedinside and outside the home throughout the year.

In our family at the Barbarigo Rectory, FatherWilson, Monsignor Weber and I tried to observe a commonmeal in the evening whenever possible. And when thatbecame too difficult because of schedules, we gathered atanother time during the day.

Why not give it a try, and make a date for dinner.See if it doesn’t improve the quality of your family life. Youwill be glad you did.

Father LaMorte

ARE YOU IN THE HABIT OF LEAVING MASS RIGHT AFTER YOURECEIVE THE LORD IN HOLY COMMUNION? If you are, yourhasty departure is noticeable as some walk right past theminister distributing the chalice of Precious Blood and out theside door to the parking lot. We know it is better to return toour seats and offer a prayer of thanksgiving to the EucharisticLord who has come into our hearts. Fight the urge to be thefirst ones out of Mass. Stay with us until the end. Be likeMary, the sister of Martha, and choose the better part. Andplease don’t be offended by this notice. It is not directed toanyone personally.

BARBARIGO GOLDEN AGE will meet on October 2 in the schoolwith great trivia questions to test your memory and earn youa prize. Flu vaccine will be administered from 1:30 to 3:00.Bring your Medicare or insurance card. Register for theOctober 16 communion breakfast at Lynch's for $20.

SAINT FRANCIS DAY BLESSING OF ANIMALS You are all invited to bring your pets to theSaint Francis Day blessing on Saturdayafternoon, October 1 at 12:00 noon outsidethe Church. Christians learned from St.

Francis about the stewardship of creation and living in peacetogether. On this day, we ask God’s blessings upon theanimals in our household.

MINISTER TO THE PARISH Consider serving the parish as a layminister: ALTAR SERVER, CATECHIST, CHOIR MEMBER, EXTRAORDINARY

MINISTER OF HOLY COMMUNION, LECTOR, USHER OR GREETER. Weneed help in each area, at each Mass. There is always room fornew people to work along side of the veterans. You can do it!None of these requires perfection, just a willingness to helpfacilitate the celebration of the liturgy. If you have anyquestions or would be willing to be trained, please speak toFather or call the parish office (947-1873).

HAVE DINNER WITH THE PASTOR ANDPRINCIPAL Come join us for a cookingexhibition and a fine dining experiencepresented by parishioner Robert T. Zottoli,

executive chef with Flik Hospitality Group on Saturdayevening, October 22 at 7:00 PM in the parish gymnasium. Atthis dinner, Bobby will demonstrate how to develop a menuand walk us through the art of planning and the actualpreparation of a meal event. The carte du jour will featuresweet corn veloute, merguez sausage, porcini mushrooms, steamed sofrito port bun, pickled onion, cucumber, microcilantro, choice of grilled sirloin of beef or French cut chickenbreast, butternut squash and English pea puree, Scandinavianpotatoes, lavender flan and vanilla crema, and coffee service. The cost will be $50 per person and you are welcome to bringyour own wine. If there are any proceeds, they will be addedto the School Capital Improvement Fund which will be used toenhance the physical amenities for the children. This is awonderful way for adult parishioners and school and religiouseducation parents to meet and dine with each other, get moreacquainted and make new friends. Just like in the gospel, many of the followers of Jesus were brought together throughfood. For reservations, call Linda at the parish office (947-1873) or email [email protected].

PRAYERS FOR THE SICK Please notify the parish office in the event of serious illness or hospitalization so we may assist with prayers, the sacraments or a visit. We’d also like to know when someone recovers so that our list is up to date.

MASS WITH THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK This beautiful sacrament is a gift from God that is administered to aCatholic “who, having reached the age of reason, begins to be in danger due to sickness or old age.” It is a sacrament whichprovides comfort, peace and courage. Whenever a new illness develops or a first illness relapses or worsens, theperson may receive the sacrament a further time. It may also be given numerous times in the case of old age orchronic illness based on the pastoral judgment of the priest. This is not to be confused with what we traditionallyrefer to as the “last rites.” Plan on attending this special anointing Mass on Saturday, October 22 at 9:00 AM.“Through this Holy Anointing, may the Lord in His love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit.”

Rest assured: the only food we will be serving will be of the spiritual kind, at theusual time, at the usual place – by the altar rail during communion. Don't worry about bringing anything else. Wehave all you'll need right here. Just BYOS. Bring Your Own Soul.
