I. KA-BAND SATELLITE

SERVICES & SYSTEMS

The Economics Of the Ka-band Satellite Broadband

A significant portion of the world population does not have access

to voice and/or data services - Satellites are a natural fit to serve

these populations

45% of the world’s population live in rural, hard-to-reach areas

consuming only 15% of the total mobile traffic

30% of the world population live on only 1% of the worlds land area

consuming 60% of the traffic

The terrestrial costs to reach the final 1% of the population is nearly

40 times the cost of reaching the initial 95%.

Ka-band Satellite broadband is a proven

technology, delivering high-speed services to

customers beyond the reach of terrestrial networks

Ka-band satellite-based networks are uniquely able to deliver:

• affordable, immediate and ubiquitous broadband access to end-

users that are otherwise un-served by broadband

• The costs for Ka-band satellite platforms are dramatically less

than the cost to extend terrestrial broadband services

• Unlike other technologies, Ka-band satellite economics are

independent of population density

• The Ka-band market is growing significantly.

• Price is decreasing dramatically

• Millions of premises are currently equipped with Ka-band satellite broadband all over the world (e.g. in USA more than 1 million Ka-band satellite broadband customers)

Dispersed population

World’s fastest growing GDP

Huge growth in young middle class

Requirement for satellite connectivity far

outstrips all existing and planned supply

Data and voice services for telcos and enterprises

Mobile backhaul requirements for mobile expansion into non-urban areas

Local TV content production, digital switch-over and proliferation of low-cost digital tuners and LCD screens enabling large potential for Pay-TV, Free-To-Air & Free-To-View platforms

Lower space segment cost

Ka-band HTS is a game-changing industry wide innovation vastly expanding the market for satellite communications.

High Throughput Ka-band GEO Satellites (HTS) - Changing The Game

There has been a drastic evolution in performance in the last few years thanks to Ka-band High Throughput Satellites (HTS) using multi-beam payloads and frequency re-use techniques

The Next-generation of Ka-band HTS systems will provide yet further significant performance improvements

(Target: Terabit/s satellite capacity at viable economical conditions in the 2025 timeframe).

II. AVANTI BACKGROUND

Note: Avanti’s HYLAS satellites are technically capable of providing Ka-band services to other coverage areas.

About Avanti Communications Group

© Avanti Communications Group plc

Avanti connects people wherever they are – in their homes, businesses, in government and on mobiles. Through the HYLAS satellite fleet and more than 150 partners in 118 countries the network provides ubiquitous internet service to a quarter of the world’s population. Avanti delivers the level of quality and flexibility that the most demanding telecoms customers in the world seek.

Avanti is the first mover in high throughput Ka-band satellite data communications in EMEA.

The Group has invested $1.2bn in a network that incorporates Ka-Band satellites, ground stations, datacentres and a fibre ring

Avanti has three Ka-Band satellites in orbit and a further two fully funded Ka-band satellites under construction for launch in 2017. Avanti covers an end market of over 1.7bn people.

Avanti Communications has been awarded ‘The Queen’s Award for Enterprise,’ the UK’s highest accolade for business success, in recognition of outstanding achievement in delivering growth in

exports.

Avanti is an ITU-R / ITU-D Sector member and a member of the CTO and ATU. We are also members of ETSI, ESOA and the GVF
