    THE ROLE OF EDUCATION FOR PEACE IN COLOMBIA

    Peace is a word that is uttered almost as frequently as truth, beauty, andlove. It may be just as elusive to dene as these other virtues. Common

    synonyms for peace include amity, friendship, harmony, concord,

    tranquility, repose, quiescence, truce, pacication, and neutrality.

    Likewise, the peacemaker is the pacier, mediator, intermediary, and

    intercessor. hile some of these descriptions are appropriate, they are

    still quite limited in describin! both the nature of peace and the role of

    the peacemaker. "ny attempt to articulate the nature of peace and

    peacemakin!, therefore, must address those conditions which are

    favorable to their emer!ence. #reedom, human ri!hts, and justice are

    amon! such prerequisites. "lso included are proactive strate!ies such as

    con$ict resolution, nonviolent action, community buildin!, and

    democrati%ation of authority.

    &he peace process additionally must acknowled!e and contend with its

    alternative war because of the hi!h value status of violence. #or

    e'ample, while war has brou!ht out the worst kind of behavior in

    humans, it has also brou!ht out some of the best. "side from relievin!

    boredom and monotony, war has been shown to spawn self(sacrice,

    loyalty, honor, heroism, and coura!e. "lso, war has helped to brin!about si!nicant social chan!es such as racial and se'ual inte!ration,

    freedom, democracy and a sense of national pride. )ecause of its

    apparent utilitarian value and its ability to enervate, violence has been

    solidly embedded in the national psyche of many countries. "s a result,

    its elimination will be no easy feat*.

    Colombia is a democratic country, located in +outh "merica, which has a

    constitution in which is written the laws for compliance. It has been a

    country with !reat violence over the years by social inequalities,

    disrespect, intolerance and other factors that cause people to perform

    acts that harm his nei!hbor with an educational model resembles that of

    the etherlands, this model does not adapt it to needs of country to

    become in a tool that the Colombian +tate should be used to miti!ate

    this violence and achieve peace, because havin! access to a school,

    colle!e or university, the person can be formed not only in knowled!e as

    well as person.

    #or e'ample, there are *7,899 schools of which :899 are public, there

    are ;7 universities. Public schools !raduate more than seventy percent

    of the total annual !raduates.
