“This is a good place to visit, to come frequently, and to remain”
Can you hear God’s Voice?
"The best way to make our dreams come true, is to wake up." How can we have a dream come true if we don't do so? Before our dreams can come true, we must first wake up!
I have learned that in Native American culture there is a talisman called a "dream catcher." Actually, they've become quite popular as pieces of jewelry and folk art. A dream catcher looks like a simplistic version of a spider's web, adorned with a few decorative feathers and beads. According to leg-end, parents are to hang a dream catcher over their newborn’s cradle - the “web” then catches only the child's good dreams, while letting the bad dreams escape through the spaces of the web's strands. It is a beautiful symbol!
We must free our good dreams, not keep them to ourselves. We must let good dreams become as prevalent. Please note the different types of dream-ers:
Dreamers by will: Even daydreamers know good words themselves are not enough. The greatest dreamers are also the greatest doers. It is not enough to say "yes." Dreaming of a closer family and truly dear friends ... means you are willing to give your time, your attention, your heart to oth-ers. Dreaming of a safe world for our children ... means we are willing to fight for justice and peace. Dreaming of a more vital, satisfying, spirit-filled church home ... means you are willing to pray and worship with all your spirit while remaining open to the movements of God's Spirit.
Dreamers by words: to dream a whole new vocabulary with words filling the atmosphere as "we can," "yes," and "wisdom". Instead of finding excuses to run and hide, daydreamers must proclaim "we can." We can make our children's lives happier; we can keep our family strong; we can help our

community join together; we can offer reassurance and support and con-cern.
Dreamers by words also dream "yes" instead of "no." "Yes" to possibil-ities instead of "no" to probabilities. "Yes" to risking commitment instead of the "no" of safe detachment. "Yes" to loving without guarantees instead of "no" to all but our own existence.
Holy-Dreamers: Like Joseph in today's gospel text, we must also be God-dreamers, Holy-dreamers. Joseph heard the call of the Holy in his dreams and responded by putting that call into action. The power of the Holy trans-formed the motivation behind all Joseph did. Joseph did not simply have a bad dream and run away from Egypt. He had a Holy dream and immediately implemented God's rescue plan.
Matthew takes great care in setting the scene for Jesus' birth. The gospel writer skillfully sketches the events immediately after Jesus' arrival. Mat-thew's focus, in both cases, is on the proper fulfillment of Scripture, detail-ing Jesus' identity in light of all the predicted indicators of the Messiah's ar-rival. In Matthew 2:13-23, the writer presents three separate scenes, each scrupulously designed to "fulfill" the Scripture text referred to by Matthew.
"Fulfillment" is one of Matthew's primary concerns, and he uses the verb "fulfill" more than any other gospel writer. As in Matthew's birth pro-nouncement, Joseph is identified as the primary actor. Each time, the angel-ic messenger appears to Joseph IN HIS DREAM and directs Joseph's behav-ior, there was no chance for hesitation or disbelief in any of Joseph’s re-sponses - the angel speaks, and he obeys completely. Joseph really believed in dreams as one way that God shows his will and put into practice his re-deeming plan.
Our birthright, our daydreams of good words and strong will empowered by a holy vision, is in danger of drying up as well. Don't let the nightmare visions of others threaten the health of your daydreaming.
But God is still trying to involve us, next Sunday January 6th we will cel-ebrate Epiphany that symbolizes exactly that something that is hidden

now it has been shown…HE calls the gentiles calling three astrologists to come, to meet the Lord and Savior and to worship the King of kings.
In this occasion, what was God’s way to reveal his purposes? Not exactly to talk to someone in dreams but he used a star that astrologists where called to follow. He is God, He is the Creator, the whole universe obeys his voice. And you, can you hear God’s voice? Can you see His star and how God is calling you to renew your commitment and to fulfill your promises and your personal covenant to obey and to follow Jesus?
Wake up, church! No more dreams without putting them into action. Christ, the little baby Jesus, is now raised from the dead! Wake up to the power the risen Lord brings to your life.
We have a dream for a BEUMC full of the Holy Spirit, for a Church capa-ble to sustain itself in all the ways---a congregation without financial needs and a place where all people can find the love of God. Well, that dreaming place: a more vital, satisfying, spirit-filled church home can be real as we awake... means, to do our very best…means as we are willing to pray and worship with all your spirit while remaining open to the movements of God's Spirit…means, to serve knowing, when we serve in Church we serve Jesus mission.
Wake up, church! No more dreams. Open up to the power of the Scriptures to speak to our life. As God talked to Joseph or the astrologist, so Christ sends a personal wake-up call to each of us.
On the first Sunday in this New Year, when we are making our resolutions this wake-up call should be addressed to Christ's own body, the church. Body parts that have fallen asleep must be shaken back into circulation. Wake up, get up and sign up. Let's bring the whole world back to life!
"The best way to make your dreams come true, is to wake up." How can we have a dream come true if you don't wake up? Before our dreams can come true, we must first wake up!
In His name, Pastor Mario S. Mayer

January 2019 My dear friends in Christ, I am excited to share with you my return to Thailand. New construction on the Grace International School campus started in July and is on target for completion in June. The goal is to have the basic facilities up and ready for use in the next school year. That is ambitious yet necessary. GIS will lose their current facilities in June and will need to move on. For the last 4 months I have been working with the architect and library staff on site to review the original library blue print. The new high school/elementary libraries will be conjoined utilizing one common service desk; computer lab and other shared resources. Eventually the library will also be open to the community. This vision was approved over 10 years ago. Yes, ten years! I often wondered if it would become a reality. I have learned to be patient with such change. It takes time to move organizations and com-munities. I will be in Thailand the month of February and will help the library staff create a floor plan for the move. I also will visit the Chiang Rai International Christian School where I helped the librarian design her new library. And, of course, I will take time to re-connect with my dear Thai friends. I am thrilled!!! So, my friends ~ I need your prayers for good health and energy. It is a long trip! ———————----------------------------------------—— With God’s grace we grow together! Your friend in Christ! Judy Long – your ‘retired’ Wycliffe missionary!

PERSON OF INTEREST AT BETH EDEN
How many know who Roger Kitchen is? My guess is most or all of you. Not to be “playing favorites”, but I probably know him the best…he is my younger brother. I probably could have written most of this article without asking him any questions, but what fun would that be!
Roger was born and raised in Rockford. He is the fourth of six siblings. He was born as our family was beginning our life at Beth Eden in 1956. He was baptized, confirmed, and become a member here. He was always a happy child and could smile his way out of any trouble. As a youth, he attended Sunday School regularly, was a member of Boy Scouts and Explorers (troop 2), and earned an Eagle Scout award. He was involved with the youth group, was an Acolyte (in the original sanctuary), sang in the first children’s choir, participated in many Christmas programs, and held palms for Palm Sunday. Church was like a second home, sometimes with many members as mentors along the way. As an adult, he has held many positions: Chairperson for Council, Trustee (co-chair), Youth Council, and was a part of forming the co-op of the three churches. He has participated in the Adult Choir, BMP for many years, helped with the Women’s Spring Banquet, went on the first mission trip to Chile, was a part of the production Beth Eden put on called “Jesus Now”, been a part of different skits that were presented over the years, and took over mowing the church lawn when our father was no longer able to do it, probably about 15 years ago. Now he is often seen at the sound board on Sunday mornings or later upstairs helping to count the offerings (of course this is if he isn’t out deer hunting in the fall). When asked about both his best memories and favorite “thing” about Beth Eden, he said that singing in the youth cantatas and in the “Jesus Now” play were best remembered; and that the friendship of the people over all the years that has bonded us together as “family” will always be treasured.
