Principal’s Report:

W elcome back to term two - here’s hoping all students have an industrious and healthy term making every post a winner to achieve their best.

Through Effort Comes Achievement, continue to Raise The Bar and grow. “Awesome” is a word that seems to be over used a great deal in recent years but it appears to be the most appropri-ate to describe our trip to Indonesia at the end of last term. All the staff and students have reported that it was a won-derful experience and fully worth the time, money and ef-fort involved. Around the College Indonesia: A Language and Cultural Experience

O n Sunday 26th March, thirteen very excited and lucky students boarded a plane bound for Bali, then flew on to the city of Jogjakarta on the island of Java. After months of Ibu’s planning and hard work, we were finally in Indonesia!

The humidity hit everyone pretty hard at the start, but it didn’t stop us climbing all over Borobodur. This massive Hindu and Buddhist temple was full of people wanting to have their photo taken with us. Every day of the trip from then on involved pho-tos with friendly strangers! From there we were taken to a traditional village where we were driven around to see the industries in little carts pulled by very feisty horses. The locals’ houses were basic, but the surrounding tropical forest was absolutely beautiful. A gamelan ses-sion was noisy but fun, then we headed back to the city, stopping off at a massive T-shirt factory, the first of many shopping experiences. The School of Arts and Crafts we visited the next day gave us a batik lesson. It was tricky but fun and we were able to keep what we created. We then visited the Sultan’s palace, called the Kraton. The tenth sultan still lives there. Prambanan temple at sunset was just spectacular, as was the performance of the Ramayana we watched after dinner. The cos-tumes and dancing were amazing and even though the story is complicated, we understood enough to recognise characters from it, like Humaman the White Monkey, that were statues in the gardens we visited the next day. A highlight of the trip – well, one of them! – was our lesson in Balinese cooking. The kitchen had no windows and it poured with rain, but we went right on chopping, grinding, frying and slicing. It was the best meal we ate for the whole trip! We did lots of other things, including hunting for presents and bargaining for the many souvenirs we brought home. This was great practice at getting our Indonesian numbers right, but with all the zeroes it was quite challenging at times! We hope that lots of people ask us about our trip, as there are plenty of stories and we would like everyone to consider travel-ling to Indonesia in the future if the opportunity comes their way. It was a truly unforgettable adventure.
