With the holidays now a memory, we welcome a new and exciting 2016. Once again we have another great team of Committee volunteers who have already rolled their shirt sleeves up and begun their work. We are very fortunate to have so many Members committed to contributing their time and energy to enhance the Colleton River experience.

Just as she did last year, Mother Nature is playing hardball with our temperatures.

But don’t let the brisk weather keep you indoors; get out and enjoy our nature trails. Pick up a copy of the Discovery Map from the Nick Front Desk. It explains the 12 discovery points within Colleton River and correlates to the signage that is in place. A biking, hiking and walking map, complete with a variety of pathways and their distances is also available. Those interested in kayaking will have some great adventures this year both “inside” and “outside” Colleton River’s gates. The first paddle is March 6th and paddles are scheduled through November 30th.

You’ll find a complete list of dates, times and locations on the member website or pick one up from the Fitness Center. If you prefer the warmer weather for outdoor activities, take this time to visit the Fitness Center. Each week there is a complimentary class and if you are looking to try something new this is the perfect opportunity. If you are new to the Fitness Center, be sure to take advantage of a complimentary equipment orientation. Indicators for Club operations are very strong. I am pleased to share with you that Fitness Center class attendance and personal training are at their highest levels ever and expected to continue. Dining covers for 2015 surpassed 2014 numbers by over 2,000, and you’ll be happy to note member golf rounds for 2015 were also up

2,700 from 2014. Colleton River’s Member Experience program continues to hit home runs. Last year there were 35 Member Experience packages and 43 single day tours, with a conversion rate of 32%. Real estate sales were robust in 2015 and we saw 43 real estate transactions (25 homes and 18 lots) and enthusiastically welcomed 35 new members to Colleton River. The New Year is starting with a bang as well. As of February 1st there have been seven sales transactions (four homes and three lots) with six pending. Colleton River now has 357 homes (244 on the Nicklaus side and 113 on the Dye side), 21 homes under construction, three in the ARB review process and several major/minor construction projects.

With respect to projects, we finished last year with improvements to and the addition of a sixth tennis court to the Tennis Complex and constructed a new playground, while the Halfway Café got a fresh look with new plantings and lighting, and the beautification initiative of additional islands and community grounds moved along. At present, work is underway to improve the Club’s Wi-Fi capabilities and replace existing security cameras with a new, more extensive system. Along with security, the new system will be a great management tool. Venues will be monitored by staff to better respond to service needs at our various amenities, capture and respond to distress and medical emergencies, and enhance our ability to protect and add security to community spaces. When the community pool opens this spring, it will do so with a fresh deck and all new furniture. Starting May 9th and going through September 30th there will be a flurry of activity as the Club moves forward with the restoration of the Dye and Borland courses, development of the short game area, and the addition of the Learning Center. The new design of the Borland will offer tee and green approaches for all levels of golfers, including junior and beginners. The new short game area will offer a much greater variety of golf shots, simulating course conditions while allowing more members to practice at the same time. With a growing

What’s Happening? There are many ways to find out what’s going on at the Club, both digitally and in print. If you have not downloaded and registered to use the Colleton River app, be sure to pick up one of the how-to booklets in the clubhouses and get started. You can make dining, court, and tee time reservations right from your phone, as well as see all upcoming Club events. Of course there are still event flyers and the Events & Happenings booklets printed for your convenience, and the weekly email blasts tell all.

number of golfers turning to technology to improve their game, Colleton River’s Learning Center will be of tremendous benefit on this front as well. The resulting “Practice Park” at the Nicklaus complex will provide Colleton River with an amenity unparalleled in the Lowcountry. Its proximity to the Halfway Café is an added bonus making the complex a comfortable place for family and friends to come together to practice and play, and enjoy an atmosphere of congeniality and camaraderie.

The Dye clubhouse will also get a facelift this summer while the course work is underway. Lastly, as we reported to you at the Annual Meeting, we’ve made great progress and continue to work with local Fire Department authorities to establish a permanent fire station facility off the Nicklaus maintenance area. We will keep you informed as this all comes about.

Keep in the know! We have a number of communication outlets. While the Monday eblast is probably the first channel you think of, there are many more. Pick up an Events & Happenings booklet from the Nick Front Desk or from one of the boxes located inside each security gate. Flyers are available at the Front Desk, posted on bulletin boards around the campus and digital displays are in both Golf Shops and the Fitness Center. ForeTees provides golf updates and weather information while the Club App gives you handy access to activities via your mobile devices. Have a question about a policy, rule or regulation, or need a Club form? They are easy to find. Just go to the Member website home page and click on “Rules, Regs., Policies…” where you will also find financial reports and governing documents. Access Board and Committee minutes just as easily by clicking on “Events, News & Information” and following the “Board of Directors” link. Town hall and annual meetings are always very informative as are the periodic Club letter updates. And, of course, The River.

Stay warm and take heart, spring is right around the corner!

Congratulations! Please join us in congratulating Erica Pepper, Events Manager, on earning her CCM (Certified Club Manager) in January! CCM is a highly sought after club management designation that takes years of classes and education. It is achieved by taking an exam covering ten management competencies including law, sports, communication, facility management, etc.

Page 6: The River Spring 2016

As we begin the new year, our Club’s members can look back at 2015 with a great deal of satisfaction. We ended the year in a strong financial position. We had a very successful Junior Amateur Championship that the USGA continues to praise throughout the country. Property sales were stronger, especially at year end. Last, we completed some capital projects to add much-needed amenities for our

members and their families to use and enjoy for many years. It is a great time to be part of Colleton River.

Each year begins with a new Board of Directors consisting of member volunteers who have been elected to serve

our Club as Board members. While one-third of the Board changes each year, the Board’s fundamental role remains constant. The Board sets the strategic direction of the Club. Directors facilitate member involvement and

communication through our various advisory committees. Also, the Board holds our leadership team accountable to deliver planned operating results, while allowing our excellent General Manager and COO to drive

our operating plan and manage the day-to-day activities of our Club. Tim Bakels and his team remain dedicated to operating our Club in such manner that others view Colleton River as the most sought after and desirable community in the Lowcountry.

At the first Board meeting of the year, the Board of Directors endorsed the Club’s current long-range plan (available on the Club’s website) under which recent Boards have prioritized projects and developed annual operating plans and budgets. We have made great progress in following the long-range plan’s list of strategic projects to refresh and renew our current assets and amenities while taking steps to fill gaps in our competitive offering by adding new amenities. The work is far from finished, however, as we have a lot of work to do this year with the renovation of the Dye and Borland courses, and the development of our new “practice park” at the Nicklaus. The new practice park will be greatly enhanced with the addition of a new learning center due to the amazing generosity of over 50 members who made voluntary contributions to our capital funds to accelerate its development. Last, we expect to see construction begin this year on the long awaited new fire station on Club property located adjacent to our Nicklaus maintenance facility.

Welcome New Members!

In addition to recommitting to the current long-range plan for this year, the Board also committed to begin the process of developing a new/updated long-range plan in 2017. By that time the current long-range plan will be five years old, and it will be time to refresh it and set an updated strategic path for our Club. The new Board remains committed to keeping our members informed on all projects as developments occur. We have a lot to do this year and some of the work will inconvenience members. So, we ask in advance for your understanding, patience and support, while we all work together to make our Club even better.

Yes, it truly is a great time to be part of Colleton River.

The spring is a great time of the year for golf in the lowcountry! Our major spring club events

kick off with the Men’s Pro-Member-Guest followed by this year’s new Ladies’ One Day Member-Guest, Couples’ Club Championship, Men’s Member-Guest and Men’s and Ladies Member-Member. The staff is looking forward to your participation in all of our club events.

Congratulations to golf staff member Mark Reilly! Last December, Mark was recognized and awarded with the Hilton Head Island PGA Chapter “Assistant of the Year” for 2015. Candidates are nominated based on their contributions to the game, their facility and to the Hilton Head Island PGA Chapter and Carolinas PGA Section. Mark is the first ever assistant to win this award in back to back years!

If 2015 was the year of the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, 2016 is the year for projects. The golf staff is excited about the renovation plans for both the Dye and Borland courses. I am certain these enhancements will increase your golfing experience, and with the proper coaching, improve your game. Most importantly, the golf staff is extremely excited about the “practice park” concept. The new short game area will be designed to create lies and shots similar to on-course conditions found on our Dye and Nicklaus courses. The new learning center will have state-of-the-art technology which will assist in improving your golf swing. The best thing about all of this is your golf professional staff will be there to coach, assist, and help you enjoy this great game of golf !

To assist you with your planning, the golf staff would like to remind you of some targeted dates. The Nicklaus Practice Facility, Borland renovation, and Dye projects will be starting this spring on May 9th. The Dye and Borland Courses will remain closed through September 30th. Beginning May 9th, the Nicklaus first tee will close at 12:00pm each Monday to allow for general course maintenance. Additionally, the Nicklaus course will be closed for aeration June 13th-17th, August 8th-12th, and October 1st-10th. Our summer reciprocal program and professional staff will be available at this time so you may have access to other courses in the area during these closures. We look forward to offering an even better golfing experience as a result of these necessary improvements.

Finally, you should be aware of recent changes to handicapping and rules made by the USGA. The two most important changes that will affect you are 1) scores are not to be posted when rounds are played alone, and 2) rule 14-1b – anchoring the club. Please be aware your Golf and Handicap Committees are implementing and supporting these changes.

Matt Lucchesi, PGADirector of Golf

Congratulations are also due to our golf professionals for their recognition by the PGA! For the Carolina PGA Hilton Head Chapter, Matt Lucchesi was named 2015 Professional of the Year, and Mark Reilly was named 2015 Assistant of the Year, for the second consecutive year.

The Carolina PGA Chapter award is voted on by area PGA Golf Professionals, and recognizes golf professionals for their contributions to local, sectional, and national PGA programs. We are honored to have such great golfers leading our program!

Congratulations are in Order!

Colleton River member Roberta Bowman was named Chair of the LPGA’s Board of Directors in January. She has served on the LPGA’s Board of Directors since August 2011, and also chaired the Executive Steering Committee of the 2001 U.S. Women’s Open and co-chaired the 2007 U.S. Women’s Open.

“My work with the LPGA fuels two of my passions: opportunities for

women to achieve their dreams, and the unique role golf plays in business and building relationships,” said Bowman. “I’ve seen how our LPGA professionals engage with fans and sponsors, and believe it provides an exceptional opportunity in professional sports. In addition to being outstanding athletes and golfers, our LPGA professionals are terrific role models as well.”

Bowman will serve on the board along side another Colleton River member, Peggy Mulligan.

Congratulations to our Director of Instruction, David La Pour! He was ranked 8th on Golf Digest’s “Best Teachers in Your State” list for 2015-2016!

If you have not yet taken a lesson from David, you should! His students always report great improvement in their game even after just one lesson.

Spring in the Lowcountry can be a wonderful

time as things begin to wake up from the brief winter weather. It can also be a stressful time as another year gets underway. I always think of the season as my time to renew, refresh and affect change in personal

habits that crept in throughout the previous year. This time of year also brings me fresh hope, energy and commitment to do better, eat better, and live better. It’s easy to get caught up in diet change and resolution, but developing behavior change is easier if you have a plan. Hopefully great intentions can become better habits for a new year:

• I want to do better• I want to be pleasant and kind• I want to eat cleaner• I want to enjoy family life

To the right are a few very quick and easy breakfast, mid-morning or lunch smoothies that can help deliver different results. Enjoy in great health! Your culinary team looks forward to serving you in this new year. Spring is a very special time in the south and we will celebrate it carefully. Have a wonderful and safe spring season!

Thank you Colleton River members! Your contributions totaled in excess of $45,000 and brought holiday cheer to many of our neighbors in need. Children once again received the gift of reading through wonderful pieces of children’s literature. School social workers were able to see that children in need had holiday presents. Many local homeless families were visited by Santa with a bagful of toys and clothes. Children identified through our social service agency, US Marine Corps, and Family Promise of Beaufort County received many presents.

The good news is money remains for year round support to our school clothes and supply closets, Bluffton BackPack Buddies, and Island House food pantry. Island House is a day program for mentally compromised adults that provides social services and life skills training. Each year, Operation Santa Claus provides holiday presents to the participants in the program. For most of them, this is their only holiday celebration as many live in poverty and in isolation except for their time in the day program. Your continued effort each year allows us to support our community. Thank you!

OPERATION SANTA CLAUS

“Dear Mr. & Mrs. Claus and to all the elves in the background. Thank you so much for reaching out to us here at Island House. It felt like angels had been sent here by God. My gifts were just what I asked for and just what I needed. You are all angels I believe have been placed here to commit random acts of kindness. The bracelet you gave me said, “I love you to the moon and back.” That’s what I would say to my premature son born 9/26/00. It literally brought tears of joy and amazement. I loved everything that was given to me. I never thought of reading a children’s Bible and what a great idea it was! (She asked for a simple and easy to read Bible, and this was suggested by a clerk at Barnes and Noble). The silverware was vital - I had only two forks left! And the Sunflowers perfume was such a treat for me! I haven’t had a bottle of perfume in years. So may Jesus continue to do his work through your hands. And please be blessed yourselves in the New Year. Again, all my appreciation. Love, a Participant in the the Island House Program.”

“Many thanks for all you do for Island House. Your generosity has

turned Christmas into a time of joyful celebration for a group of people

who would not have a celebration of their own. I am inspired by your generosity. Thank you for caring for a precious group of people who are

easily forgotten by the rest of the world.” -an Island House Caseworker

Gifts were delivered to military families in need at Parris Island.

Member Jim Grove loaded up his convertible sleigh again to deliver gifts.

THE FIRST TEE OF THE LOWCOUNTRY

The Teen Holiday party at the Bluffton Boys & Girls Club was a fun time, and all the kids were very happy with their gifts.

Many thanks to all who volunteered their time to make the holiday season special for children in need in our community. Everyone who shopped, wrapped, organized and delivered made Operation Santa Claus a success.

Hosting the 2015 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship last year was an honor, and the event was a great success. Thanks to the support of our membership and community, Colleton made a $100,300 donation last fall to The First Tee of the Lowcountry. The money will be used to establish an endowment creating a Colleton River Scholarship Fund to make sure families who need financial assistance can enter their children into the program, which teaches nine core life values through the game of golf. Eventually, Colleton will host a First Tee tournament pairing scholarship recipients with members, and member Paul Zaffaroni will serve on the board at The First Tee of the Lowcountry.

Colleton River Friends of Habitat is building its 10th home! Construction is underway in The Glen, the first Habitat for Humanity community on Hilton Head Island, and the next Colleton-sponsored home will also be located there. We are also excited to announce a Colleton River employee is on the qualified list and will be the recipient of a new home in the next 12 to 18 months.

We’d like to wish you all a happy and healthy new year from the Tennis Center. After a short winter break, we are running our normal tennis programming. Monday programs start at 9:00

am for the men (all levels), and 10:30 am for the women (3.5 and above). Wednesday programs start at 9:00 am with the theme of the week (all levels, men and women) followed by doubles drill and play at 10:00 am (3.5 and above men and women). We’re keeping our fingers crossed for a typical warm winter. We hope to see you all out on the courts.

With the addition of the sixth court, we have seen more activity at the Tennis Center. Colleton has three USTA teams competing this spring. We have a men’s 4.0 team captained by Joe Isola, and two women’s 4.0 teams. The 40 and over is captained by Sam Boyd, and the 55 and over is captained by Louise Dickson and Pam Dyer. Come on out and cheer your teams on to victory!

We have a number of events scheduled throughout the year so we will keep you posted on dates and times. Our first event is the Play for Pink on March 9th followed by the pro exhibition and dinner on March 11th. We’ll send reminders out to keep you informed.

We recently added new clay to the courts in the fall, so everything is looking great at the facility. See you all on the courts! – Colleton River Tennis Staff

Spring Tennis Schedule

The Nick vs. Dye Challenge was an exciting match!

Tennis TipIt sounds crazy, but many of you play better when you have less time to think on the court. Take reflex volleys for example. When your opponent drills a ball at you up at net you sometimes just react without thinking and the point goes in your favor. When you have more time to decide what to do, things tend to go south. If you have options on a shot, choose one and stick with it. Whether you choose to drive, chip, lob or drop, pick one and stick with it. Good luck!

How is Your Balance?

The greatest of golf swings all have great balance. The best way to determine what level of balance a golfer possesses is to put them through the “Single Leg Balance Test.” This test measures the golfer’s overall balance. Additionally, it will highlight any proprioceptive imbalances from left to right as well as the overall stability in the core.

To perform the test stand tall with your arms down by your sides, but not touching your sides. Elevate one leg until the thigh is parallel with the ground. Once stable, close your eyes and see how long you can maintain your balance. Any re-positioning of the foot is considered a loss of balance. Record and repeat on the other side.

More than 11 seconds is considered normal for the average human, while the PGA Tour average is 26 seconds. Failure of this test will lead to mechanical problems with your golf swing. If you happened to fail this test, stop by the golf shop and we will recommend some exercises for you that will help improve your balance.

Golf Academy

control Your setup

Golf is a game of endless variables; some that are within our control and others that are not. An often overlooked variable is setup. One-third of all golfers setup in something termed “c-posture.”

C-posture is an excessive rounding of the upper back or thoracic spine in your golf stance. Setting up in this position can lead to a severe loss of spinal rotation, which will in turn limit your ability to make a good backswing. Aside from depriving you of distance, c-posture may be the cause of many lower back related golf injuries. C-posture can be caused by a series of muscle imbalances, joint restrictions, or may simply be related to poor setup.

If you happen to exhibit the characteristics of a c-posture setup, stop by the golf shop and we can help evaluate the cause. We may even be able to recommend some exercises to improve your setup that will help you get to a perfect backswing position.

Golf Fitness with Lance GillMost people would not recognize the name Lance Gill, but in the golf fitness world he is a rock star. Lance is the co-director of the world renowned Titleist Performance Institute (TPI), and has taught over 10,000 experts in the fields of golf fitness, golf instruction, medicine, junior and biomechanical proficiencies. Helping thousands of amateurs and hundreds of tour players around the world, we had the pleasure of hosting Lance during a golf fitness seminar right here at Colleton River! As the 100 plus participants found out, our golf muscles may not be working correctly and walking is more of a science than we thought. Mentioning that “the quality of golf and longevity of playing golf directly relate to mobility and stability of the body.”

Lance went on to talk about how to use the pelvis correctly while walking and golfing. As part of the fitness building block of the Golf Academy, we are familiar with Lance and currently have three (Matt, Mark, and myself) TPI level 2-certified golf fitness instructors here to help you. If you would like to join the TPI program, let one of us know and we’d be happy to start you on your way to better mobility and stability! For more information go to www.mytpi.com.

Last fall’s “super moon” brought extremely high tides to the Lowcountry. The water was as high as the bridge to the 4th hole on the Nicklaus course!

This year’s Fourth of July carnival, cart parade, and fireworks were a lot of fun despite the rain storms, and as usual, there was plenty of kid-cuteness!

The community dock is a great place to host an event, and if you time it right, the sunset will be an amazing backdrop for your guests! This stunning scene was captured by member Jim Grove.

The annual Ladies’ Holiday Tea was a wonderful way to celebrate the season, and the number of gifts collected for local children in need was even bigger than last year!

&We have had the good fortune of hosting more and more baby showers

over the last few years. It’s such a great opportunity for the mother-to-be to relax and enjoy the celebration. We are always here to host but we also wanted to provide some tips on how to plan a beautiful shower.

Etiquette is changing! It used to be taboo to have a mother or sister host a shower for the expecting mother,

which is no longer the case. With most children not living in their home town, they are having multiple showers. Many are done now with their mother in her city and one in their current city by a friend.

Guest List – It’s always important to ask the mother-to-be for a list of names and contact information for people she would like to make sure are included.

Theme – Pick a theme and carry it through the event. The centerpieces, linen, cake, favors, invitations and food can all incorporate the theme.

Invitations – There are many options for places to create a beautiful invitation. Savannah and Hilton Head have many invitation designers and there are also some really great websites you can order from. Make sure to include the RSVP number with an option they can text or an email address for responses and also where she’s registered. The RSVP deadline should be 7-10 days in advance of the shower.

Décor – Enlist a florist to help you make a stunning centerpiece that sets the tablescape. You can also use specialty linens to add a more luxurious feeling to the shower.

Menu – A beautiful brunch, a luncheon or an afternoon tea are all great options for the menu. Be sure to include a themed cake or cupcakes too!

Favors – Favors can be placed at each setting or given as guests leave. A box full of goodies is always a nice treat. Pinterest or other sites can give you some great ideas for what to use. People tend to appreciate gifts they will use more than items that are tied into the shower. Themed cookies, local lotions, candles, makeup bags, mini-Champagnes, etc. are all items that make for great favors!

Cocktails – Unfortunately, the mother-to-be can’t indulge in the cocktails but the guests can! It’s a nice touch to meet them at the door with a passed Mimosa or punch. To the right is a great recipe for an easy punch.

It’s easier to eat a 10-inch pizza than run on the treadmill. It’s easier to make excuses than get up and get motivated to go and workout. Many of us don’t make a fitness routine a priority of

our daily lives; when all we need is an hour a day to change our lives in a dramatic way. Just drinking water throughout the day will help you stay hydrated, will keep your hunger in check and flush out toxins giving you clear skin.

Here at Colleton River, we try to cater to everyone’s fitness levels and abilities. Whether you are a seasoned veteran or just learning the ropes with regard to exercising, we have something for you. Our Certified Personal Trainers are here to get you off on the right foot and to make working out fun and exciting. They will guide you through the right techniques and offer encouragement and support to make sure you hit your personal fitness goals. Classes offered at Colleton provide the opportunity to interact while being physically active with others. Group classes offer a fun environment, convenient schedule, and effectively designed workout that can be modified for any fitness level. In February, we began offering two new classes, Therapeutics and Golf Dynamics.

Therapeutics is a class designed to help stretch the lower back and hamstrings, and give proper postural alignment to keep the spine happy and strong. We will use a variety of fitness techniques: mat exercises, stability ball exercises, resistance training, myofascial release, stretching, and trigger point therapy. This class is offered on Tuesday evenings at 5pm. Golf Dynamics is designed to strengthen the core, and improve mobility, flexibility and stability. It also helps reduce tension in the lower back, knees and shoulders areas. This class is offered on Wednesday and Fridays mornings at 8am.

Whether you have just exercised or want to relax and feel pampered, a visit to our Spa is a perfect solution. We offer an extensive range of massages that will help you relax, unwind, and get rid of those tension areas that you might have. Stop by the Fitness Center to get your new year off to a happy and healthy start! ~Stephen Minnaar, Fitness Director

The LLG enjoyed a tour and holiday luncheon at Rose Hill Mansion, known as the most beautiful plantation house in the Lowcountry.

February 26th: “See Why It’s Different Out Here”; Presentation by Roberta Bowman on her experiences as a Director on the LPGA Board and dinner at the Nicklaus Clubhouse.

April 27th: An all-day field trip to historic Daufuskie Island, includes ferry transportation, lunch, and a guided tour.

Upcoming Events

LLG Committee members, Doris Beedie and Sue Glancey arranged for Vaughnette Goode-Walker to speak at the Nicklaus Clubhouse on January 21st. Goode-Walker is one of three authors of the book, Savannah, Immortal City – the first in a four-part series titled Civil War Savannah. With her intimate knowledge of Savannah, she opened unknown doors and donated hundred of hours of careful guidance that helped ensure the factual accuracy of this historical series.

Dressed in a beautiful, African-inspired outfit, Goode-Walker began her presentation with a tribute to the souls of enslaved people who once worked plantations in Bluffton. Showing slides of historic sites in Savannah, she told stories of the lives of urban slaves and soldiers during the Civil War. Over 60 Colleton members enjoyed a southern-inspired dinner following the presentation and had the opportunity to purchase the books. It was an honor to have her as our guest.

Lifelong Learning Group (LLG)

The Art of Seeing Art Among the latest presentations by the Art of Seeing Art group was Red Grooms’ One Way. Melanie Andrews and Mimi Elder began their talk with Bluffton fourth and fifth graders by telling them a little about this prolific, living artist and then asking the children what they saw in the vibrant painting. The students had not been told the name of the painting, and they were asked to guess what its name might be. Whereas none of them guessed the exact name, they were extremely responsive and came up with some valid ideas. In these presentations, any thoughtful answer is greeted with respect, which validates one of the goals of the program - to give the children a chance to have someone listen respectfully to their ideas and have them taken seriously.

Because Red Grooms is known for his humor, and because One Way has numerous amusing and almost cartoon-like features, the children were challenged to think about what made it museum-quality art and not a cartoon. They were given a chance to look at a piece of fine art that was not a landscape or a portrait and contemplate what it was that made it art. Melanie and Mimi encouraged the children see the different emotions of the people in the painting, and to speculate on what the artist wanted his work to convey.

After quite a lively discussion, during which there was “no wrong answer,” the students were invited to create their own “one way” picture. They were given cutouts of people, vehicles, and signs and asked to color them with bright markers. A black and white poster was on an easel with city buildings and a street drawn on it. As they finished coloring, the children came to the front of the room and glued their figures onto the poster, all going one way.

Other paintings presented this winter were Jackson Pollock’s Lavender Mist, Norman Rockwell’s Soda Fountain, Romare Bearden’s The Block, and Polke’s Hope Is Wanting to Pull Clouds.
