Valentine’s Day --unique ways to celebrate!

Dear CIC students,

we are going to leave our handle-it-all parents and head to places we

might never have been before. We ought to be aware of the fact that life there

could be very hard and even frustrating sometimes. We need to deal with a

lot of difficulties by ourselves: countless writing papers, language barriers,

unrecognizable accents, unfriendly and unwelcoming environments, etc.

We all know that we have been through a lot at CIC. With all the experiences

we have gained from the past few years, it would be much easier for us to

face and overcome the challenges in our future. we are given a chance to

work with different personalities, to absorb refreshing ideas for new possi-

bilities.

Finally, I would like to express my appreciation to all the media class-

mates for putting so much time and energy into our newspaper, as well as

to all the CIC kids for being here. Cherish the time we are together. Have fun

every day. Keep going and fight for what you want. And I know you will.

Yours sincerely,

Regina Zhou

As a school, CIC Jiuting and Guiling gathered together for the first

time. I especially remembered the point when people were shouting

“CIC”. That made me feels like we were a real school. I am so happy to

see that CIC students can do more than math.--- Lindsey White

When the lights on, the strings of guitars began to tremble, the audi-

ence shouted and jumped with the rhythm, I felt I was the queen of the

night, the center of the world. I will never forget the moment.

--- Cici,singer of Season 5

It’s an amazing night. Music, snacks, and light create an exciting at-

mosphere. And,there were many hot girls. That's fantastic! --- Leo, an audience

On the night of February 18th, from 7p.m to 10p.m, students from many international schools including CIC attended a battle of the bands. This battle, which was entitled, “Fill Your Heart with Music,” was the first event of its kind in Shanghai. It aimed to raise money for “Heart to Heart,” an organization which was established to help kids who are born with correctible heart de-fects but do not have the money for treatment. These children are given a second chance at life.

BATTLE of the BANDs

Page 5: The Rising Phoenix

Over three hundred and fifty students and faculty, representing seven schools from around Shanghai and even Nanjing, attended to have fun and support their school’s bands. They voted for their favourite acts by donating money in one of nine boxes, each marked with a different band’s name. Hit Parade, a band from Ping He high school, earned the most donations and won the battle. Second place went to The Josiah Seet Acoustic Guitar Experience, a one man band from Dulwich. Other bands included The Freeloaders from Concordia, Little Muffin and The Big Nose Monkeys from Fudan, An Ocean Inside from Shanghai American School, and CIC’s own Pulse, Cherry Bomb, and Season 5. Musical styles ranged from classic rock to modern rock, 90’s alternative, pop, Chinese pop, K-Pop, J-Rock, heavy metal, and even a little blue-grass.

The venue was the entire third floor of Wharf 1846, located at 601 Waima Lu; a dusty, vacant warehouse that overlooks the Huangpu River as it stretches along the Bund. It had been transformed into a concert hall with a stage, lights, professional sound system, decora-tions, concession stand, and a coat check. The location was appropriately rock and roll, and even more appropriate because it was reminiscent of the conditions in which the families that Heart to Heart represents live their daily lives.

Each band played a stellar ten minute set, generating heaps of applause from their en-thusiastic audience. The night concluded with a series of attractive dance routines, and eve-ryone agreed that they had an amazing time. In the end, 25,000 RMB was raised – just enough to pay for one heart surgery for a needy child living in rural China. The event was appropriately named, as this child’s heart was literally filled with music.

Special Valentine’s Day By Katherine Shi pg.5

February 14th can be the sweetest date for lovers, but can

also be the deepest scar for singles. People choose different ways

to celebrate this festival such as

buying special gifts, confessing

your hidden love and getting

drunk in the bar. Let’s find out

how our students in campus cele-

brate it.

Bachelor PartyIf you like to immerse in the loud music

and darkness, mystery in the Night clubs,

Shanghai’s clubs won’t let you down. With

the influence of alcohol, the lonely people

lose control in their crazy moves and

open their hearts for the expecting af-

fairs. Beneath those flashy surfaces, you

can actually hear the scream of countless

distorted hearts waiting to be saved. You can go out there to find the

one-night –stand, but still be careful for the drugs and poison hidden

behind those “nice” guys.

Page 7: The Rising Phoenix

Special Valentine’s Day By Katherine Shi pg.6

DatesNo matter how angry or jealous the single people are on 2.14, this fes-

tival is always the one for the valentines. Flowers,

neck laces and and cand les c reate ro-

mance for couple, while the combina-

tion of the three provide brave and

support to those who are still look-

ing for opportuni- ties. Some boys in

the campus hold such an event for their girl-

friends by spelling “I love U” with burning candles

and fresh roses at night.

Trouble-making UnionSomehow, when the Valentine’s Day is

coming, the people detest it actually out-

numbers those who love it. That’s reason

why an article like “79 reasons why I hate

Valentine’s Day” could be so popular on the

Internet. You can join the Trouble-making

Union to disturb the sweet date of Valen-

tines who dare to love each other in the

public place. Ordering all the adjacent seats

in cinema to separate couples in scattered position or a slap on the boy-

friend’s face and accusing him for betray (But you don’t know him) would

definitely puzzle the couples for a while.

White  Valentine’s  Day?    Let  me  guess  -‐-‐  one  hundred  yuan  on  chocolate?    And  one  hundred  more  on  flowers?    Perhaps  two  hundred  yuan  on  dinner?  Oh  man,  did  you  run  out  of  savings  paying  for  your  White  Valentine’s  plan  and  spend  the  following  days  with  a  cup  of  noodles?

Here  comes  good  news.  You  don’t  really  have  to  tighten  your  belt  and  pretend  not  to  care  about  large  expenditures  in  front  of  your  sweetheart.  Guys,  did  it  ever  occur  to  you  that  girls  are  not  just  fascinated  by  the  power  of  fancy  stuff?  Sometimes,  maybe  a  homemade  meal  and  a  sweet  kiss  can  bring  them  to  paradise.  Let  us  use  some  imagination  to  create  a  romantic  White  Valentine’s  Night  and  make  the  memory  unforgettable.

It was an undoubtedly fruitful trip in the MUN held by the Ivy League for CIC, with the awards of Outstanding Small Delegation, Best Teacher, Outstanding Delegate, Honorable Mention and Best Position Paper, which was remarkable for, really, so small a delegation (eight students plus one teacher) and of course I hereby bid my gratitude towards Mr Street, who shared his acute insight into our topics and helped us stand out among hundreds distinguished delegates from all over China.

The procedure of each conference was identical. At the beginning of each session, there was a roll call to indicate how many delegates were present, which deter-mined how many votes it would take to have the simple majority and overall ma-jority.

After the roll call, the chair called upon a motion to set the agenda of the confer-ence since two topics had been previously given for preparation and the one in the favor of majority would be our mandate.

It was at this stage that the conference actually commenced with the speaking list, which spawned nearly all the seated delegates to raise their placards as fast as they could. For those that might hesitate in the thought that they haven’t been prepared enough to deliver a speech, I would be most eager to point out that that chances are even if your raise your placard in the first place, you’ll probably be ig-nored for a very long time as everyone around you, who must be considered by the chair, is zealous to state their positions during the speaking list.

The speaking list would continue until a moderated caucus was called for by dele-gates during which delegates were to have the floor and address their opinions on the topic of the moderated caucus and if there was something you would like to discuss with certain delegates, you could only pass pages through volunteers until an unmoderated caucus had been consented to take place in which delegates were free to leave their seats to negotiate with other delegates that might share similar views on the topic and form blocs.

When the first session was over, each bloc was expected to come up with a working paper to conclude what had been agreed upon during the prior session before the next session during which the working paper would be introduced by the sponsors of the blocs (who wrote the working paper and were practically the bloc leaders) and discussed by all present delegates.

Once the working paper had been demonstrated and argued over during the sec-ond and third sessions, the chair would highly encourage delegates’ attempt to merge blocs on the purpose to reduce the total number of draft resolutions which would be due before the fourth session.

Now in the last two sessions, it was time to illustrate the draft working papers and debate over them for the last time for time had come for voting which would de-termine which bloc would be the winner by the consensus of the overall majority.

Memories of ILUMNC China 2012

Page 13: The Rising Phoenix

What was the fun part of this conference, besides delivering all the speeches and taking part in the intensive debates, which I utterly love, was the negotiation and all the political diplomacies among delegates of different blocs or even within the same blocs in the interest of the countries and the goal to pass the resolutions in the end.

Take my case for instance, which was quite adventurous (for lack of a better word) to recall upon. At first, during the first unmoderated caucus, I was most surprised at the fact that most blocs had already formed before any formal discussion and the arguing people really didn’t pay much attention to me (partly because the chair hadn’t picked me at the time) and I did listen to their positions which seemed rather flawed and not so reasonable. Therefore, on a sudden impulse, I established my own bloc with very limited delegates who remained silent throughout the entire conference, depending mostly on me, which left me to do all the writing work and negotiation.

However, it later turned out it was a perfect opportunity because being an unchal-lenged bloc leader from within, once I had been selected to deliver speeches, which impressed all the present delegates, other leaders from large blocs paid most of their attention to me and negotiated only with me, especially after I pointed out their paradox in positions with the evidence I had previously found due to the ad-vice from Mr Street. As a matter of fact, they had to use euphemism when discuss-ing the disputed part of their position and, in return, I stepped back from being absolutely one-sided on the issue, but we were then all adamant about our new position against those that opposed us. As time elapsed, I rose to eminence due to my gift in English speeches and debating skills, which actually added me not only to the sponsor list of the draft resolution, which was very uneasy for someone like me that formed a merger with the bloc last, but also elevated me to the position as one of the chief bloc leaders and granted me with more chances than anyone else in my bloc to introduce and argue over our resolution. With the strongest allies in my bloc, we won the voting and got our resolution passed, which aroused long-lasting effervescence among our bloc members.

In general, both the process and the result were rewarding, with the former teach-ing us the art of negotiation and the latter witnessing us individual capability, but the achievements were certainly commensurate with the effort we put in and might not be obtained were it not for Mr Street’s tutoring in presentation skills and his consultation.

*Peter won one of only 6 ‘Outstanding Delegate’ awards in the conference. Alex (Pre1) won ‘Best working paper’ and Annie (Pre1) received an honorable mention for her debate skills. The delegation as a whole was awarded ‘Best small delegation’ out of the entire conference.

ScreenThis is the best upgrade that Apple may choose. With a Retina screen of 2048*1536 resolution, you can enjoy the fantastic dis-play ever before. Watching 1080p HD movie on a portable device is not a dream any more.

4GNowadays 4G-LTE network has covered most big cities in United States, and the uni-chip (no concern about depth and weight any more) has been invented and produced by Qualcomm, which showed its wonderful performance on iPhone 4s.

SiriNatural language, conversational, contex-tual and dictation anywhere, these words look amazing to an electronic device once, aren’t they? But they may be used to de-scribe the Siri video identification system on iPad 3, which indicates another leap of artificial intelligence.

With a new version of Siri, it is possible to say that you can communicate with your iPad 3 as a personal assistant. If you want to send messages, search closest café or do any other chores, you may just ask Siri to do and enjoy an easier life.

Apple Inc., the most eye-catching company over the world, con-stantly drive for success with its artistic outlook and user friendly sys-tem products such as iPad 2 and iPhone 4S in 2011. IPad 3 as the new comer in 2012 continuously attracts millions of consumers. Ac-cording to a questionnaire of random 5000 people, half of them are willing to buy this product. However, IPad 3, the most desirable gift in 2012, still covers with mystery. Before it launches, let the Rising

ProcessorThe new A5X processor on iPad 3 will be a quad-core processor with better process and graphic performance. The advance can en-sure the running of big games such as infinity blade fast and smoothly.

BatteryWith the improvement of high-resolution screen and quad-core processor, you may worry about the battery usage issue. How-ever, the new battery, which is designed to be thinner, lighter and reliable, has been tested successfully according to a report released recently. It is notable that the price of iPad 3 will rise sharply if the battery is truly applied on iPad 3. Maybe you will feel much harder to hold your pocket.

CameraLoving to take photos anywhere but hating to carry a lot of heavy de-vices , you can choose the iPad 3 with a 500mega pixel post camera as a portable photographic tool. After a remark-able improvement of the camera, iPad 3 can satisfy all your needs of catching any com-memorative moments in daily life.

My first impression of Xiamen is all about waves. Waves in Xiamen never cease whether you are sleeping on the bed of a seaside holiday inn or walking towards the yellow glowing beaches. They come and grab you from everywhere to no-where, creeping up inside, consuming all the pres-sure and anxiety, and bringing you peace and power by raising the missing memories from the deepest corner of your heart. The serenity of the sea is powerful and contagious. It can dig into your personalities and sow seeds in your mind. Thus, it is easy to understand that most of the Xiamen locals are calm and friendly. Xiamen has neither burning summer nor freez-ing winter. Monsoonal humid subtropical climate

embraces the approximately 130 square meters coastal region from Jiulong River to the islands of Xiang'an, providing a paradise for those wildlife dwellers. Therefore, egret, which is precious and rare in other area, inhabits among those islands, embellishes and flourishes the eco-system of Xiamen with generations and generations. Xiamen with its amicable residents, extra-ordinary natural landscape and intimate ambiance, attracts millions of millions tourists every year. However, for me, Xiamen is irreplaceable just be-cause of the ability of purifying our soul, regard-less how busy we are during the city life. I bet you won’t lose any opportunities to embark on a jour-ney to this wonderland.

Shuangyu  is   a  kind  of   jade  jewelry  carved  like  two  fish  joined  head  to  tail,  popularized  among  the  upper  class   of   the  feudal  government   in   ancient  China  during  the  Liao  Dynasty  (A.C.  907-‐1125).,  Typing  Shuangyu  jade  into  Baidu,  a  well-‐known  search  engine,  the  first  entry  to  appear  refers  to  one  of  the  strangest  occult  events  in  China,  which  is  also  called  Shuangyu.

There  are  many  conjectures  about  Shuangyu.  The  most  ‘lucid   logical   and  scientific’  conjecture  suggests  that  Shuangyu  is  actually  a  high-‐tech  device  which   is   left  by  aliens   -‐-‐   the  other  explanations   are  even  less   believable.  When  scientists   in  China  placed  a  fish  near  Shuangyu,  Shuangyu  suddenly  reacted  and  duplicated   another  fish,   which   seemed  exactly   the   same  as  the  original  one.  Scientists  also   poisoned   one  fish.   The  fish  died   immedi-‐ately,  but  the  other  fish  died  seven  hours   later.  This  phenomenon  proved  that  Shuangyu  may  be  able  to  accomplish  a  time-‐space  leap.

Another  conjecture  indicates  that  Shuangyu  refers  to  an  action  of  Chinese  government   from   the   1950s   to   1960s.   China   exploded   an   atomic   bomb  and   a   super   atomic   bomb  both  around   Lop  Lake,   where  Shuangyu  hap-‐pened.  The  conjecture  states   that  a   serious  genetic   disease   and  duplica-‐tion  of   human  beings   occurred   around   the   Lop   Lake   region,   so   Chinese  government  took  action,   including  the  test  of   the  two  bombs   to  control  the  situation.

Conjectures  about  Shuangyu  are  various,  but  none  of  the  conjectures  can  be  proved  right  or  wrong.  Most  of   the  conjectures  mentioned  the  ability  to  duplicate  life.  Does  Shuangyu  really  have  the  technology  to  alter  space-‐time?  Maybe  we  will  see  in  the  future.

Recently,   an   Asian-‐American,   Jer-‐

emy   Lin   caught   the   eyes   of   those  who   are   interested   in   NBA.   Jeremy,  besides   Amare,   Anthony   and   Chan-‐dler,   became   the   BIG   FOUR   for   the  New   York   Knicks.   In   the   first   five  games,   he   surpassed   many   great  basketball   players   like   Shaquille  O’Neal   and  Michael   Jordan  with   138  points   and   41   assists.   More   impor-‐tant,   he   led   the   Knicks   getting   six  straight  wins.

Jeremy  Lin  began  his  career  first  in   the   Golden   Stare   Warriors   in  2010.   However,   he   did   not   gain  any  chances  there  and  he  was  cut  down  after  one-‐year  struggle.  He  passed  through  many  places  and  at   last   he   became   a   member   of  the   Knicks.   In   the   New   York,   he  started   his   amazing   show   at   the  game   against   the   Nets.   2.11.2012,   the  brightest  day  came.  Facing  the  defense  of   Kobe   Bryant,   Jeremy  Lin   posted   38  points  and  7  assists  and  terminated  the  nine   straight   failures   to   the   Lakers  without   any  help   from   Amare   and   An-‐thony.

There   is   no   doubt   that   Jeremy   Lin  has  great   talent   in   basketball.   But   why  there   is   not   a   good   judge   for   him   for  such   a   long   time?   Perhaps,   in   many  people’s   minds,   the   person  with   black  eyes  and  yellow  skin   is   doomed  to   fail-‐

ure   in  bas-‐ketball.   After   Yao   Ming,   Jeremy   Lin  stood  up  and  proved  they  were  wrong.  Though   his   great   persistence,   Jeremy  Lin  achieved  his  own  American  dream.

Jeremy  Lin  has  already  made  a  series  of  records.  He   is   the   first   Asian-‐American  basketball   player   in  NBA.  Many  people  question   that   how   long   Jeremy   Lin’s  magic   performance  will   last.  Only  time  knows.   But   until   now,   he   just   keeps  getting   better   and   we   all   believe   his  legend  will  continue.

Love,  the  romantic  comedy,  was  released  on  Feb.  13th.  The  film   is  directed  by  Doze  Niu,  whose  2010  film  Monga  received  both   good  box   office   results   and   criticism.   But  different   from  Monga,  Love   is  a  light-‐hearted,  warm   film,  which  tells  a  story  that  happened  in  two  cities–Beijing  and  Taipei.  It’s  about  eight  lonely  people  searching  for  love.  All  that   happens   and   every   sacrifice   that   is  made   are   all   for  love.          Even  before  the  film  was  shot,  its  superstar  cast  made  headlines.   The   film   brings   together   several   hot   Chinese  actors   and   actresses,   including   Eddie   Peng,   Ethan   Juan,  Fanny  Shu  and  Zhao  Wei.          Niu  said,  by  watching  the  film,  he  wanted  the  audience  to  be  touched  by  the  characters’  desire  to  find  true   love.  But  more   importantly,   he  wanted   people   to   understand  more   of  what   love   is.  “True   love,  under  any  condition,  is  supposed  to  make   you  happy,”  Niu  said,  “no  matter   it’s  getting   over   somebody,  or  wishing  that   somebody  well,  or  forgiving  him/her.”

Blue Valentine is a 2010 romantic

drama film written and directed by

Derek Cianfrance. Intertwined with

the sweet memories they had a few

years before, the movie chronicles

the weekend that Dean and Cindy's

marriage starts to break up.What

leads these two to break up? It is

what the movie drives the audience

to think about: Why should we get

married? Why should we live to-

gether? How can we lead a pleasant

life? We should think these ques-

tions seriously. Love doesn’t only

mean sweet or amazing times that

valentines spend together, but also

means the resposbility the two

should take for themselves, for their

family, and even for the society.

Dean and Cindy finally separate,

walking their separate ways. Their

love burned up finally and hurt both

of them. After watching the whole

movie, everyone should think about

their attitudes towards love, and life.

The Big Bang TheoryPopularity:  5The   Big   Bang   Theory   absolutely   captures  the  top  place  on  CIC  students’  list  of  Ameri-‐can  series.   It   depicts  the   life   of   four  genius  scien8sts  and  their  preJy  neighbor,   Penny.  We  generally  agree   that   the   nerds  all  have

some   weird   daily  habits   and   that   is  what   the   scriptwrit-‐ers  of   The   Big   Bang  Theory,   Bill   Brady  and   Chuck   Laurie,  are   making   fun   of.  “Smart   is   the   new  sexy!”   reads   one  popular   adver8se-‐ment   for   the   show.

Furthermore,   The   Big   Bang   Theory   really  challenges   our   English   skills.   Those   highly  educated   scien8sts   always   throw   a   great  deal  of   SAT,   GRE,  GMAT   and  other  bizarre  words  around  in  their  daily  conversa8on.  “I  can  only   fully  understand  what   Penny  says,  even   with   the   help   of   the   sub8tles”,   Du  Mei,  an  A2  student,  said.

Gossip GirlPopularity:  4Telling  the   stories  of  young   rich  kids  in   the  Upper  East   Side,   gossip  girl,   the  most  mys-‐terious  figure   in  ManhaJan,  catches  our  at-‐ten8on.   Clearly,   the   series   Gossip   Girl   is  more  popular  with  girls,   but  CIC  boys  know  a  lot   about   it,   too.   “This  is  the   secret   I  will  never   tell,   XOXO   gossip   girl,”   one   of   the  most   well-‐known   lines  from   Gossip   Girl,   is  commonly   used   by   both   boys  and   girls   in  CIC,   especially,   when   they   are   designing  lines  for  their  own  plays.  Gossip  Girl  is  also  welcomed   by   some   English   learning   web-‐s i t e ,   s u c h   a s ,   www . 5 1 T e s t . n e t ,  www.ebigear.com,   and   en.hujiang.com   for  its   sophis8cated   spoken   English.   Some  teachers   from   New   Oriental   use   quotes  from  Gossip  Girl  as  well.

HOT AMERICAN SERIES BY JASMINE JIN

Nearly all students in our campus spend at least an hour a week watching TV series.

Also, among those TV series, American se-ries are the most warmly welcomed.

Here are the top time traps for CIC students.

Sisterhood 姐妹淘The   Chinese   term   “Jiemeitao”   comes  from   Tai-‐wan   and  means   sisterhood   or   the   rela8onship  between  two  or  more  women  who  are  very  good  friends.Throw  a  party  with  your   sisterhood  to  enjoy   the  last  summer  holiday  before  going  abroad.

Buzzword Break!

Surprisingly,   Vampire   Dairies   is  more   popular  among   boys   while   White   Collar   is   more   popular  among  girls,  according  to  the  survey.  However,   the  good-‐looking  main  characters  of  the  two  series  jus-‐8fy  the  situa8on.  Nina  Dobrev  and  MaJhew  Bomer  are   both  too  preJy   to   repeal.   In  Vampire   Diaries,  Nina  Dobrev   acts  as  two  characters  who  have   the  same  graceful  look  but  opposite  personali8es.  Boys  do   talk   about   the   two   characters   and   their   ex-‐tremely  complicated  rela8onship  with  a  pair  of  vampire  brothers,  Damon  and  Stefan.  The  complicity  of  love  may  be  another  reason  why  Vampire  Dairies  are  so  welcomed  at  CIC,  but  many  students  also   claim   that   the   storyline   is  convoluted.  White   Collar   is  compara8vely  clearer  since   it   is  a  unit   play.  MaJhew   Bomer’s  charming   blue   eyes,   aJrac8ve   smile   and  strong  figure  made  CIC  girls  who  are  aSer  American  series,  so  crazy  about  Neal  Caffrey,  the  role  MaJhew  Bomer  plays  in  White  Collar.  Though  the  detec8ve  story  in  each  episode  is  in-‐

dependent,  the  whole  series  is  connected  by  the  life  track  of  Neal  Caffrey.   “What  does  Neal  actually  want?”  is  the   ques-‐8on  perplexing  not   only  those   characters  in  the   series,   but  also  CIC  students  who  watch  the  show.      Besides  those  listed  above,  there  are  a  colossal  number  of  other  diverse  TV  series  that  are  popular  among  CIC  students,  such  as  True   Blood,   Glee,   Nikita,   Lie   to  Me,   etc.   However,  the  movies  above  are  definitely  the  hoJest  American  series

at   CIC.   Are   you  looking   for  an  enjoyable   series  to  watch?  Why  not  try  these?  I  bet  you  will  like  them.

Attend class on timeGetting out of control from your parents is surely an exciting thing. But it doesn’t mean that you can waste your time. For us, self-improvement is always the top priority. And of course, the importance of class at-tendance ought to be highlighted. There is a popular online saying - the cost of 1 lesson is equivalent to the meal cost of one week. The expense of 20 lessons is equal to an iPad. With that figure on your hand, do you still insist on escaping your class anymore? Wake up, man, this is your life! If you do not care about your life, who is going to look after you in the future? Go to class, and learn from that. And then you are half-way successful!Stay active. To build a strong body requires time and energy. But a weak one can cost you even more especially when you are getting old. Playing DOTA day after day in a closed space makes an indoor-man pasty and frail. Looking up the latest news about “otaku goddesses” or shopping online makes an aimless day even more frustrating. Boys,

g e t o u t o f your room please and run a few laps on the playground. There is no way you are

going to meet a new girl by staying in your dorms all day. Go fascinate girls with your manliness!! Girls, come on, stop staring at your nails. Your beauties cannot be appre-ciated if no boy is around.Be engagedStaying busy staves off boredom and helps to improve your practical skills. Run a play, join a club, write a paper, and go on a stage. Give it a shot and meet new people. You will get a lot of advice and inspirations by engaging in dif-ferent activities. Use your own power to light t h e w h o l e school. Take a t o u r a r o u n d your campus. Countless things are waiting for you. This is your age. This is your chance to shine!!Balance of lifeHello, rich CIC kids, remember to keep sex and drugs off your college lists. Alcohol and cigarettes will weaken your physical and mental abilities gradually in a way you are not aware of. Take good care of your body. Remember your body is the closest friend you need to rely on throughout your life. But there’s nothing wrong with going for a couple of drinks on Friday night when you are free. Occasional parties can be so-cially healthy, build your professional net-work, and are good for you too.

Going  to  college  can  be  a  huge  event  in  our  lives.  However,  knowing  how  to  be  a  qualified  college  student  and  how  to  enjoy

our  campus  lives  are  our  top  priori=es.

TIPS FOR LIVING ABROAD BY REGINA ZHOU

Fiona,  a  cute  and  beau8ful  English  teacher,  is  famous  and  popular  in  CIC.  She  men8oned  that  she  liked  the  atmosphere  here  was  preJy  good.  “It  is  really  harmonious-‐students  are  mature,   and  always  come  up  with  new  ideas,  which  make  me  feel  nice.”

Before  she  came  to  CIC,  she  had  worked  in  Global  IELTS  for  several  years.  She  learned  a  lot  from  that.Every  8me  she  men8oned  the  students,  she  smiled.  “Though  the  conflict  between  the  different  cultures  in  CIC  some8mes  confused  me,  I  like  CIC.  I  like  my  cute  students.”When  talking  about  the  future  seriously  she  said:  “I  want  my  students  to  study  their  favorite  subject  in  university.  I  want  them  to  have  their  own  best  future.””  And  for  herself,  she  wants  to  become  a  specialist  in  English  teaching.

Jim  Zhang,  a  gentle  and  approachable  man,  is  one  of  the  most  popular  phys-‐ics  teachers  in  CIC.  Before  he  came  to  CIC,  Mr.  Zhang  had  been  in  other  interna-‐8onal  schools.  ASer  working  here  for  about  four  years,  he  enjoys  his  life  with  the  hard-‐working  students  of  CIC.  “They  are  willing  to  ask  ques8ons  about  physics.  It  is  most  important,  and  makes  me  feel  that  I  am  doing  things  really  full  of  signifi-‐cance.”  He  said  with  smile.

“Remember  the  Physics  Bowl  last  year?  I  see  lots  of  students  working  hard  to  prepare  for  the  compe88on.  Our  office  is  always  saturated  with  students  asking  test  ques8ons.  I  like  the  atmosphere  here:  students  are  showing  their  interest  in  physics  to  me!  ”  he  added.

“I  enjoy  my  work  here  at  CIC.    Teaching  here  is  fun  and  challenging.    I've  learned  and  s8ll  con8nue  to  learn  many   things  about  compu8ng  and  teaching,”  he  said  happily.

A glance at popular CIC teachers

By Betty ZhangJude Fei

With  his  young  appearance  and  fashionable  ounits,   Ronald  Madi-‐janon  Igar,  has  a  good  reputa8on  for  geong  along  with  students  at  CIC.  For  most   students,   he  is  like  our   bigger   brother.   He  enjoys  listening   to  music  and  talking  about  fashion  with  students  and  colleagues.

He  also  added  that,  “Teaching  in  China  also  gives  me  the  opportunity  to  learn  the  culture  and  explore  many  places.    I  get   to   travel  around  China  during   long   holidays.   ”   We  students   described   him   as   friendly,   gentle,   smart,   and  handsome.

Page 26: The Rising Phoenix

Spending  your  spare   time   in   a   maid  café   is   now  no   longer  a   novel   entertain-‐ment  for  teenagers  and  animation  enthu-‐siasts   in  Shanghai.  Maid  culture   from   Ja-‐pan  has   come   to  China   and   is   becoming  more  and  more  popular.  These   cafés   aim  to   extend   the   virtual   world   of   games   to  reality   and  provide   a   place  where   dreams  come   true   for   players.  Many   young  peo-‐ple,   who   want   to   get   rid   of   strict   social  controls   and   away   from   their   mundane  life,   come   to   the   maid   café   to   seek   the  amiable   services   and  enjoy   the  feeling  of  placing  themselves  in  the  comics.

Akihabare   in  Japan  is   the  base  camp  of  maid  culture.  Japanese  maid  waitresses  dress   in  maid  costumes,   act   as   servants,  and  treat  customers   as   masters   in  a   pri-‐vate   home,   rather   than   as   café   patrons.  When  guests  come,  maid  waitresses  greet  them   warmly:   “Welcome   back,  my   mas-‐ter.”  The  phrase  during  services  is  “As  your  order,   my   master.”   When   guests   check  out,  they  walk   to  the  gate  and  wave   fare-‐well.  However,   these   kinds   of  pure   Japa-‐nese   services   are   not   accepted   by   young  Chinese.   The   word   “master”   said   by   a  young   waitress   indicates   that   men   are  superior   to   women   in   some   Chinese  minds.  Actually,  maid  waitresses   are   not  the   only   marketing   trick   to   attract  male  guests.  What  is  called  “maid  services”  rep-‐resents   a   better   level   of   service,   which  embodies   the   spirit  of  gentleness  and  in-‐timation.

Let’s  have  a   look  at  the  maid  cafés   in  Shanghai.   Bob   and   I   went   to   the   Luna  Maid  Café   last  Saturday,  which  is   located  on  the  third  floor  of  a  digital  devices  mar-‐ket,  No.99  on  Huaihai  Road.  Just   like   the  images,  there  were  many  cute  maid  wait-‐resses   wearing   beautiful   Japanese-‐style  uniforms  shuttling  around  the  café.  Sweet  greetings,   attentive   service,  walls   of   car-‐toon   posters   and   a   lot   of   animation  books—this  was  the  scene  that  greeted  us  at  the  Luna  Maid  Café.  Most  of  the  guests  we  saw  in  the  cafe  were  male.  Some  were  chatting  with   maid  waitresses   and   each  other.   Some   were   playing   card   games  with   maid   waitresses.   We   ordered   two  cups   of  hot   chocolate   and  then  watched  the  cosplay  performances.

We  were  so  lucky  because  we  caught  the   weekly   Saturday  night   cosplay   show.  A  group  of  maid  waitresses   in  traditional  Japanese   costumes   sang   and   danced   on  the  stage.  They  also  invited  several  guests  to   the   stage   for   interactive   games   and  gave  out  small  gifts.  For  example,   in  one  game   the  waitresses   invited  two  custom-‐ers   to   come   to   the   stage   where   they  taught  them  kung-‐fu  poses.  Many   guests  participated   in   the   show   and   created   a  crazy   atmosphere.  At  last,   all  maid  wait-‐resses   on  the   stage   posed  and  smiled  for  the  cameras.  Guests  could  even  ask  them  for  group  photos,  but  it  cost  cost  an  extra  fee.
