SUNDAY NIGHT LIVE Bruce Tanner
Talent Show?
An old friend, Loren Elkin visited ARCC for our February edition of Sun-day Night Live. He enjoyed the experience and wrote a very complimen-tary editorial in our local newspaper under the title, “The Best Talent Show in Polk county”. We appreciate Loren’s kind words and hope that he comes to visit us again soon. We fully understand why Loren and others would see Sunday Night Live as a “Talent Show”, but is this what this monthly ARCC event is all about?
Back in 2001, Apple River Community Church was much smaller than it is now. As a small church trying to recover from some hard times, there were a lot of things we could not do. We did have people however, who enjoyed worshipping the Lord with hymns and gospel songs, so we de-cided to get together for an evening of fellowship and music. This be-came a regular monthly event, that has attracted many visitors from other churches and from out community. The rest is history.
Sunday Night Live has never been intended to be a “preaching service”. For the most part, we allow the lyrics of the old hymns and gospel songs to carry the message. Sunday Night Live was never intended to be a “talent show” either. We are thankful for the musical abilities the Lord has given our participants, but our real purpose is to draw attention to our Lord and what He has done for us. Although we have no way of knowing the motives of our musical contributors, it is our desire that each participant would view what he or she does as a ministry and not a performance. This is why we do not welcome secular music on Sunday Night Live. There are plenty of venues in which non-Christian music may be appropriate. Sunday Night Live is not one of them.
Music and Readings
The main course at Sunday Night Live has been, and still is Christian music. We try to keep our program length between one hour and one hour and fifteen minutes. This means we need to move right along, es-pecially if we do some congregational singing. Some also bring “readings” and other non-musical content to share with the group. For sake of time and balance, we try to keep readings to a maximum of three

per service. Readings at SNL are like seasoning to a good meal. We
ask that the essays or poems be in good taste, reflect Christian val-
ues and be relatively short. Most musical numbers last for about
three minutes. A good rule of thumb for readings is that they not
take more time than a musical selection. We include our three read-
ings on a “first come, first serve” basis. Those wishing to be included
on the program might consider signing up early or calling in their
intention to participate. My number is 715-268-8360.
Thanks for everything!
Finally, we wish to thank all who attend and participate at Sunday
Night Live. Thanks to Troy and his helpers in the sound booth.
Thanks to Pastor Justin for his work with the microphones. We
thank the people who step in to arrange tables and chairs. We also
thank the faithful ladies of the church for providing free refresh-
ments after the service. We have never “put out a dish” for contribu-
tions, nor do we take offerings. do not ask for money from our
guests. The ladies on the serving committees donate and serve the
goodies that we all enjoy. We all appreciate what they do for us, but
probably do not tell them often enough.
ANOTHER MILESTONE FOR ARCC Another milestone was met on April 15 when ARCC purchased the ad-
joining land which surrounds the church. Chairman Glen Wright, and
Deacons Josh Bell and Dick Berhow met with Fred and Sharon Remond
at the attorney’s office in St. Croix Falls to sign the closing papers.
The purchase of this land had been discussed with the Remonds off and
on over several months, with us receiving a negative reply. Ray Smith,
who knew Fred Remond, instigated and set into motion the final action
to purchase the land for $108,000.
The purchase was made with a down payment in January, and the
final installment on April 15. The payment came from the Building
Fund. The Building Fund now has a balance of about $38,000. It is im-
portant to build up our fund again for building projects, additional park-
ing, etc. Please keep ARCC in your prayers and for God’s direction on
the use of this land.

Always with us
Forty days after Easter, we celebrate Jesus’ ascension into heaven. This occurred 10 days before Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit de-scended on Jesus’ followers, as he had promised.
Jesus’ ascension reminds Christians that although his body couldn’t remain present

“SUMMER KICK-OFF “
CELEBRATION
Friday, June 3rd
4-8 P.M. We will have a celebration here at church.
Come enjoy bouncy houses,
inflatables, food, music...a grand
celebration for the start of summer. Bring your
kids, grandkids, neighbor kids...even BIG kids
can come to celebrate the start of
Summer Vacation!
A Child’s Perspective A group of second-graders was quizzed about what ingredients their mothers are made of. One child said, “God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and everything nice in the world, and one dab of mean.” To the question "What does your mom do in her spare time?" one youngster said, "Mothers don't do spare time." When the children were asked “Why did God give you your mother and not some other mom?” one child replied, “God knew she likes me a lot more than other people's moms like me.”

Church signs—a part of our culture. By Stan Miller
Stumbling occurs when one is vertical and we tend to stumble most often when we are young
and inexperienced, or old and weak. It is therefore imperative that we gain experience and/or
strengthen ourselves. In the physical realm this is accomplished through discipline and exercise.
Some of the gain is a natural process of growth. Therefore, we stumble less in our prime unless we are not too ob-
servant.
Spiritually, the process is similar. We need to grow, get experience and maintain strength. This requires disci-
pline. Paul wrote about discipline often in his letters and he often compared the discipline to that of an athlete.
He talked about Olympic athletes. This implies world class athletes who train year around with determined disci-
pline. Their focus is winning the prize.
In Romans 12:12b, Paul penned, “Be patient in trouble and always be prayerful.” Patience takes discipline and
control. Trouble offers the opportunity for growth according to James. These trials also give us much needed ex-
perience although the experience is not fun. Prayer gives us the added strength needed to stay upright, or vertical.
Living Water Assembly off god, Sedalia, Missouri had this message on their church sign:
“It’s hard to stumble when you’re down on your knees.”
SUMMER MISSIONS—Makaila Brown
Makaila is choosing to be a summer missionary again this summer because she feels God is calling her to con-
tinue to teach children. She is looking forward to teaching younger kids Bible lessons and sharing the Gospel
message with them.
The only way she can be part of this ministry is through the prayer and financial support of family and friends.
She needs to raise $2,700 for CYIA training, teaching clubs, and to cover travel expenses through the summer.
Thank you for joining her in reaching children and for your prayers and support.

ONE WAY CLUB
One Way Club is winding down for another
year as the club’s last night will be May 4th.
There were about 50 kids who had a great
time dressing in various costumes from dress-
ing like their parents, to secret agent night,
pajama night, fancy night, history character
and many other fun costumes. They learned
Bible verses, heard Bible stories, learned new
songs, and ate and played games together. The kids ranged in
age from 1 to 18.
If you attended Wednesday night Bible study and prayer,
you saw and heard all the excitement of the kids. You could
tell they were happy and inspired.
A special thank you to ALL the adults who helped teach,
cook, drive, or helped in any way. You helped make One Way a
success.
Although the year is ending, the kids will be active in ser-
vices and fun events at church. Namely—
Sunday May 22—One Way Kids will lead worship songs
June 24 & 25—Canoe and camping fun night
July 27—Saints Baseball Game (Open to All)
August 22—Wild Mountain (Open to All)
Keep your eyes and ears tuned for information on activities
coming up next!

May 1, May 8 and May 15 Close to God I can take my telescope and look millions and millions of miles into space. But I can lay it aside, go into my room, shut the door, get down on my knees in earnest prayer, and see more of heaven and get closer to God than I can assisted by all the telescopes and mate-rial agencies on earth.
