PHONETIC AREA

• Simple vocalic sounds.

AIM

• To revise simple vocalic sounds.

• To work on the pronunciation of frequently mispronounced words.

TASK

• To play a revision game on PowerPoint. PREPARATION AND MATERIALS

• PowerPoint presentation: The Right Sound.

• An answer sheet and a pen per pair. TIMING

+30 minutes.

PROCEDURE

• Tell the students that they are going to play a game in pairs. Every slide corresponds with a simple vocalic sound.

1. Students must say the name of the picture it is shown (1), then the teacher shows (2).

2. Students must now say the vocalic sound in that word. Then the teacher plays the sound (3). Afterwards the teacher shows the phonetic symbol (4)

3. The teacher shows three words (5) and students in pairs must decide which has the same vocalic sound as the one above.

4. Students must then discuss and write their answer on their answer sheet.

• Follow the same procedure with the rest of pink slides.

• To check answers:

1. Students give their answer, then the teacher shows (1) and monitors its pronunciation.

2. The teacher asks the pronunciation of the other two words, students say it and then the teacher plays the sound (2).

3. The teacher asks the vocalic sound in both incorrect answers, students say it and then the teacher shows (3)

• Follow the same procedure with the rest of black slides.

• The pair with more correct answers wins the revision game. At the end the teacher shows the last slide and plays the clapping sound.

� To take full advantage of the game, these vocalic sounds must have been introduced in previous sessions.

� Do not focus on the diphthongs shown: the main aim is getting the pronunciation of the word right.
