How and when do I apply for admission?Candidates for fall and spring admission may complete the Common Application or apply online at hofstra.edu/apply. We encourage you to use the online application process.

While you may apply for admission to Hofstra anytime, we recommend that you complete your application and submit your transcripts by March 1 for the fall semester, and by November 1 for the spring semester. Early application is encouraged for students interested in on-campus housing and scholarships.

What are the admission requirements for transfer students?A typical transfer student has a cumulative GPA of 2.30 with 24 earned college credits.

Is there an honors program available?Hofstra University Honors College (HUHC) serves students who perform at the highest academic levels in any undergraduate program or major. The HUHC curriculum is designed to provide a wide-ranging and multidisciplinary intellectual experience while fostering a sense of community and identity among students who share the HUHC experience. transfer students who have earned 24 college credits with a GPA of 3.5 or higher are invited to join HUHC upon admission. Students who have earned honors credits at a previous institution may apply them toward completion of the Honors College Recognition designation.

What must I provide to the Admission Office in order to make my application complete?You must submit a completed application, application fee, official transcripts from each college attended, high school transcript and SAT/ACT scores (if you have earned fewer than 24 college credits at the time of application).

When will I receive a decision?You should receive an admission decision approximately three to four weeks after your file is deemed complete.

When will I receive a transfer credit evaluation?

All admitted students receive a preliminary credit evaluation in the mail three or four weeks after they are accepted to the University. An official credit evaluation is mailed to you only after ALL final official transcripts – including current semester grades – are received by the Admission Office.

How do I know which credits will apply to my degree at Hofstra?

You may make an appointment with a counselor in the Transfer Center before or upon admission, or you may meet with an advisement dean to determine the applicability of transfer credits. Transfer credits may or may not apply to your chosen major at Hofstra, especially if you are changing majors.

Which of my credits will transfer to Hofstra?

Generally, courses with grades of “C-” or better may be transferred from your current and/or previous colleges. Usually, if the course is comparable to a Hofstra course, you will receive credit. Please review the information on the following page for details.

Can I receive a preliminary credit evaluation before I apply?

Yes. You can meet with a counselor in the Transfer Center to receive a preliminary credit evaluation. An advisement dean will then determine the applicability of your transfer credits.

What you need to know about transfer credits

v Articulation agreements and plans of study are available online at hofstra.edu/transfer.

v A Credit Evaluation Guide is available for students transferring from our top 20 feeder colleges. Visit hofstra.edu/creditevaluation.

v A course description and/or syllabus may be required from the student before proceeding with an official credit evaluation.

v A minimum of 124 credits are required for a bachelor’s degree, with some exceptions.

v A minimum of 30 credits in residence are required. residency requirements may vary by major.

v A maximum of 9 credits of “D” and “D+” grades may be transferred to Hofstra, providing the student has a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 at the institution where the “D” or “D+” grades were received and the student has earned a minimum of 30 credits at that institution.

v A maximum of 64 credits from a two-year college may be transferred to Hofstra, with the following exceptions: 65 credits for business majors; 69 credits for engineering majors. Students transferring from Nassau Community College may apply up to 67 credits to their degree if majoring in education.

v first-year seminars, nursing, internships/co-ops, independent studies, certificate programs, paralegal, remedial courses, and office technology (e.g., secretarial procedures) courses are NOt transferable to Hofstra.

Part-time evening studies at Hofstra

Hofstra’s part-time students enjoy nearly the same range of academic options as full-time students. Plus, to accommodate the needs of those attending classes in the evening, the Center for University Advisement, The Career Center, and other administrative offices offer extended hours – which enables you to make appointments in the evening or on the weekend. Also, nearly all of Hofstra’s facilities, from the Mack Student Center and Student Counseling Services to Student Computing Services, Axinn Library and the Mack Fitness Center, are open evenings and weekends. Your HofstraCard entitles you to access all that’s available on the Hofstra campus.

Hofstra’s Office of Residential Programs offers a variety of comfortable living environments designed to meet the diverse needs of more than 3,800 resident students. Six of the 37 residence halls are high-rises, for instance, while two (Liberty and Republic) are low-rises with traditional corridor-style configurations. Four other halls contain suite-style arrangements. Each hall is staffed by resident directors and resident assistants.

Our primary goal is to provide students with a safe and comfortable living/learning environment. To ensure the safety of students and guests, residence hall access is limited to students carrying valid HofstraCards, and the University installed a five-part, campus-wide emergency alert system.

Students can live at Hofstra year-round and will find the campus is its own community, with 18 dining facilities, a hair and nail salon, post office and full-service bank branch.

How can I be considered for an academic scholarship?

You will be considered for an academic scholarship based on the information you supply on your admission application. Qualified full-time applicants may receive up to $15,000 per year. However, please note that scholarship awards, which are limited, vary from semester to semester. Students are encouraged to apply early for full consideration. Part-time scholarships are available for students registered for at least six credits per semester. Visit hofstra.edu/transferscholarship for more information.

Does Hofstra award need-based financial aid?

Yes. When completing the FAFSA online at fafsa.gov, be sure to indicate Hofstra’s federal code: 002732. As long as your FAFSA is on file, Hofstra’s Office of Financial Aid will determine whether you are eligible for “need-based” financial aid such as student loans, parent PLUS loans, TAP, Pell grants, and federal work-study.

Does Hofstra award a Phi theta Kappa (PtK) scholarship?

Yes. If you are a full-time student and member of PTK, and have 60 accepted transfer credits with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, you can be considered for one of our $2,500 PTK awards. A letter of recommendation from the PTK coordinator at your college must be received by Hofstra’s Office of Admission by May 1. This scholarship is offered in the fall semester only and is competitive, with a limited number awarded annually.

Visit Hofstra fall and Spring Information Sessions and toursFrom September through mid-May, during the fall and spring semesters, information sessions are scheduled Monday through Friday at 10:15 a.m. and 2 p.m. If you prefer to visit on a weekend, sessions are generally held on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. and select Sundays at 10 a.m. Each session is followed by a guided campus tour.
