    RETURN OF THE SHROUD

No matter how lazy Satan makes you feel, read this booklet

completely. You will admit its virtues yourself.

Excellence ofalt-Alan-NabThe Prophet of Rama, the Intercessor of Umma, the Ownerof Janna has stated, Whoever writes my

name in a book, for as long my name remains therein, the angelswill continue asking absolution (supplication of forgiveness)for him. (Al-Mujam-ul-Awsa, vol. 1, pp. 497, ad 1835)

At the time of her death, a pious lady in the city of Basra madea will to her son to shroud her in the clothes she used to wearwhilst worshipping in the holy month of Rajab. After herdemise, her son buried her, shrouding in some other piece ofcloth. When he returned home from the graveyard, he wasastonished to witness that the cloth in which he had shrouded

his mother was at home. After anxiously searching for the clothes

which she had instructed him to shroud her with, he foundthat those clothes had disappeared from their place. Suddenly,

a voice was heard from the unknown, Take back your shroud. We have shrouded her (in the cloth which she had willed); wedo not leave the people who observe fast in Rajab to be strickenwith grief in their graves. (Nuza-tul-Majlis, vol. 1, pp. 208)

May Allah have mercy on them and may He forgive uswithout holding accountable for their sake!

Various names of Rajab and their relevance

It is stated inMukshafa-tul-Qulb, Actually, the name of

[Rajab] has been derived from the word [Tarjb], whichmeans to pay respect. It is also known as [Al-Aab], which

means fast flowing, as the downpour of mercy is increasedexponentially upon those who repent in this month and thosewho worship in this month are blessed with the light of

acceptance. It is also called [Al-Aam], which means the

most deaf because war noise is not heard at all, in this month.(Mukshafa-tul-Qulb, pp. 301)

It is stated in Ghunya-tu-libn that this month is also called

the month of stoning, as the Satans are stoned in it sothat they do not cause aggravation to the Muslims. This blessed

month is also known by [Al-Aam], which means the

most deaf because it has not been heard [or recorded] thatAllah punished any nation in this month, contrary to

other months in which Allah has sent down punishmenton the previous nations. (Ghunya-tu-libn, vol. 1, pp. 319-320)

The three letters of [Rajab]Dear Islamic brothers! , what can be said aboutthe wonderful virtues of the month of Rajab? It is stated in

Mukshafa-tul-Qulb that our pious saints have

stated, There are three letters in the word Rajab; [R], [Jm]

and [B]. The first letter [R] stands for the Mercy of Allah

[Ramat of Allah], [Jm] stands for Crime (Jurm) of the person

and [B] stands for Kindness (Birr). In other words, Allah

says, Place my servants crime between My Mercy andMy Kindness. (Mukshafa-tul-Qulb, pp. 301)

    The month of sowing seeds

Shaykh Sayyidun Allma affr has stated,

Rajab is the month of sowing the seeds, Shabn for wateringand Ramadan is the month for harvesting the crop. Therefore,if someone does not sow the seeds of worship in Rajab and doesnot water them with tears of remorse in Shabn, then how willhe be able to harvest mercy in Ramadan? The Shaykh has further added, Rajab purifies the body, Shabn purifies the

heart and Ramadan purifies the soul. (Nuza-tul-Majlis, vol. 1,pp. 209)

Dear Islamic brothers! Affiliate yourself with the Madanenvironment of Dawat-e-Islami to develop the mindset of worshipand fasts in the month of Rajab-ul-Murajjab. Make yourselves

a traveller in the Madan Qfilas for the propagation ofSunna and partake in Ijtim Itikf set up by Dawat-e-Islami

in Ramadan-ul-Mubrak. , your life will have aMadan revolution.

Here I present to you a Madan marvel for your inspiration:

An Islamic brother of Fatehpur Kamal (district Rahim YarKhan, Punjab, Pakistan) himself narrated that prior to adheringto the Madan environment, I did offer myal but despitethat I was indulged in various sins such as: listening to songs, watching movies and dramas, playing cards, etc. Whilst attendingcollege, I always used to place my bicycle in the shop of an

    Islamic brother.

Those were the days of Rajab-ul-Murajjab when as usual I wentto place my bicycle in the shop and the Islamic brother invited

me to the Ijtim of ikr-o-Naat on the account of Shab-e-Mirj(the Night of Ascension). After building up the urge to attend,on that night I left from my village (which was a fair distanceaway) for the Ijtim of ikr-o-Naat and stayed there for thewhole night.

I felt immense peace and pleasure from the Ijtim of ikr-o-Naat and for that reason, I started attending the weekly Ijtimregularly. Meanwhile, the onset of the blessed month ofRamadan-ul-Mubrak had taken place. The Islamic brotherswith their individual efforts had prepared me for observingItikf. I was already impressed and therefore readied myself

for Itikf. I learnt numerous pearls of Islamic knowledge inthe 10-Day Itikf and I crowned my head with theImma, adorned my face with the beard and I felt resentmentfrom the sinful life.

At the time of writing all this, I am struggling for Madan

activities bearing divisional level responsibility for MadanInmt. May Allah bestow me with steadfastness in theMadan environment!

Rajab is the name of a heavenly brook

Sayyidun Anas Bin Mlik has narrated that the

Beloved and Blessed Rasl has stated, InHeaven, there is a brook called Rajab, its water is whiter thanmilk and sweeter than honey; whoever observes one fast ofRajab, Allah will make him drink with this brooks water.(Shuab-ul-mn, vol. 3, pp. 367, ad 3800)

A heavenly palaceA Tabi saint, Sayyidun Ab Qilba has stated,There is a palace in Heaven for those who observe fasts in Rajab.(Shuab-ul-mn, vol. 3, pp. 368, ad 3802)

    Five blessed nights

Sayyidun Ab Umma has narrated that the Belovedand Blessed Prophet has said, There are fivenights in which Du is not rejected: the first night of Rajab, the15th night of Shabn, the night between Thursday and Friday, the night of Eid-ul-Fir and the night of Eid-ul-A (the 10thul-ajja-tul-arm). (Trkh Dimishq li-Ibn Askir, vol. 10, pp. 408)

Sayyidun Khlid Bin Madn has stated, There are5 such nights in a year if one spends them in worship out ofrecognition with an intention of gaining reward, Allah willmake him enter into the Heaven:

    1. the first night of Rajab; worship during this night andobserve fast during the day.

    2. the 15th night of Shabn (i.e. Shab-e-Bar-at); worshipduring this night and observe fast during the day.

    3. the night of Eid-ul-Fir & Eid-ul-A (the night betweenthe 9th and 10th ul-ajja-tul-arm); worship during thesenights but do not observe fast during the days (as it is

impermissible to fast on the days of Eid festivals).

    4. the night of shr (10th night of Muarram); worshipduring the night and observe fast during the day. (FailShar-e-Rajab lil-Khalll, pp. 10) (Ghunya-tu-libn, vol. 1, pp. 327)

First fast of Rajab an atonement for sins of 3 yearsSayyidun Abdull Ibn Abbs has narrated thatthe Beloved and Blessed Prophet has said, Thefast of the first day of Rajab is atonement for three years, thefast of the second day is atonement for two years, the fast of thethird day is atonement for one year and then the fast of each

remaining day is atonement for one month. (Al-Jmi-u-aghr,pp. 311, ad 5051)

Fasts were observed in the ark of Sayyidun N

Sayyidun Anas has reported that the Prophet ofRama, the Intercessor of Umma

said,Anyone who observes a fast in the month of Rajab; it will be

like fasts of one year. Whosoever observes seven fasts, the sevendoors of Hell will be closed for him, whosoever observes eight

fasts, the eight portals of Heaven will be opened for him, anyonewho observes ten fasts, whatever he beseeches before Allah ,it will be granted to him. And, whosoever observes 15 fasts, aheavenly herald announces, Your past sins have been forgiven;therefore you commence deeds afresh as your evil deeds havebeen replaced by good deeds. And whosoever does more, may

Allah grant him more. Sayyidun N stepped onto his Ark in Rajab; he himself observed fast andordered his fellow-voyagers to observe fast too. His Arktravelled for six months until the 10th of Muarram-ul-arm.(Shuab-ul-mn, vol. 3, pp. 368, ad 3801)

Excellence of a single fastThe master ofad, Sayyidun Abdul aq Muaddi Dilv

has cited the following ad of our BelovedProphet , Rajab is a month among the monthsofurma (holiness) and its days are inscribed on the portalof the sixth Heaven. If a person fasts a day in Rajab and completesit with observing piety, then this fast and this day (when hefasted) will seek forgiveness for him from Allah and willsay, Y Allah , forgive this servant! If the person fastswithout observing piety, that fast and that day will not makethe plea for his forgiveness and they will say to him, Your Nafshas betrayed you. (Mabata bis-Sunna, pp. 234) (Fail Shar-e-Rajablil-Khalll, pp. 3-4)

    9

Dear Islamic brothers! We have now learnt that remaining hungryand thirsty is not the sole purpose of observing fast, instead it

is imperative that we prevent every organ from committingsin. If one continues to commit sins despite observing fast, thisis an extreme deprivation.

The reward of fasts of 60 months

Sayyidun Ab urayra has stated, Whosoever fasts

on the 27th of Rajab, Allah will inscribe reward of observingfasts for 60 months. (Fail Shar-e-Rajab lil-Khalll, pp. 10)

The reward of fasts of 100 years

Words cannot quantify the magnificence of the 27th of Rajab. Itwas the date when the Beloved Prophet wasgranted the wonderful miracle of Mirj (Physical Ascension inthe Exalted Court of Allah ). (Shar-uz-Zarqn ala Mawib-ul-Ladunniya, vol. 8, pp. 18)

Subsequently, there is a great virtue in the fast of the 27 th ofRajab. Hence, Sayyidun Salmn Frs has narratedthat the Noble Prophet said, There is a dayand a night in the month of Rajab; if a person fasts during theday and stands (for worship) in the night, it will be as if heobserves fasts for one hundred years. This is the 27th of Rajab.(Shuab-ul-mn, vol. 3, pp. 374, ad 3811)

    Excellence of lending a hand

Sayyidun Abdull Ibn Zubayr has reported,

Whoever alleviates distress of some Muslim in the month ofRajab, Allah will grant him a palace in Paradise which willbe as spacious as the farthest limits of sight. Honour Rajab, Allah

    will honour you with a thousand virtues. (Ghunya-tu-libn,vol. 1, pp. 324) (Mujam-us-Safar lis-Salaf, pp. 419, ad 1421)

One virtue equals a hundred years virtues

There is a night in Rajab in which the one doing a good deed isgranted with awb of good deeds of 100 years and that night isthe 27th of Rajab. Whoever offers 12 Rakt in this night recitingSra Al-Ftia followed by any other Sra in each Rakat; sits

for Attaiyyt after every two Rakt and having offered Salmafter 12 Rakt, invokes:

,Istighfr, and alt-Alan-Nab each a hundred times and thenasks Du for whatever thing belonging to worldly life or afterlifeand fasts the next day, Allah will accept all his supplicationsexcept those that were made for sin. (Shuab-ul-mn, vol. 3, pp. 374,ad 3812)

    The fasts of Rajab-ul-Murajjab

Dear Islamic brothers! Four months bear distinguished urma(holiness) in the court of Allah ; hence Allah has said

    in Sra At-Tauba:

  • 7/30/2019 The Return of the Shroud, Allama Muhammad Ilyas Attar Qadri

    16/34

    Return of the Shroud

    11

    -

Indeed the number of months before Allah ( ) is twelve in the

Book of Allah, since the day He ( ) created the Heavens and

the earth, of which four are sacred; this is the straight religion;so do not wrong yourselves in those months and constantly fight

against the polytheists as they constantly fight against you and

know well that Allah ( ) is with the pious.

[Kanz-ul-mn (Translation of Quran)] (Part 10, Sra At-Tauba, Verse 36)

Dear Islamic brothers! In the aforementioned blessed verse, the months mentioned are those based on the lunar calendar. The rulings under the Islamic law are based upon the lunarmonths. The fasts of Ramadan, rulings of Zak, and the ritesof Hajj; Islamic festivals such as Mawld-un-Nab, Eid-ul-Fir,Eid-ul-A, Night of Mirj, Shab-e-Bar-at, the Auspicious

Giyrwn1, Urs of saints of Islam, etc. are all solemnizedaccording to the lunar calendar.

Alas! Nowadays, when Muslims are going afar from the Sunna, they are also disconnecting themselves from the Islamic calendar.

1 The 11th of Rab-ul-khir; widely known as Giyrwn is attributed to the Urs of His

Excellence, Shaykh Abdul Qdir Jln .

    12

If a question is posed to a gathering of one lac Muslims, Whatis the Islamic date, month and year today? Probably a hundred

Muslims would be able to give a correct reply. Remember thatit is obligatory to pay consideration on lunar months in variousrelevant matters such as obligation of Zak, etc.

Commenting on the aforementioned verse, Shaykh SayyidunNamuddn Murdbd has stated in Khazin-ul-Irfn, [Among the four months of urma are] three areconsecutive months i.e. ul-Qada, ul-ijja, Muarram, andthe fourth one is that of Rajab. Even in the times of ignorance, the Arabs considered killing (war) to be arm in these months. In Islam, the urma and sanctity of these months has beenfurther emphasized.

A faith enlightening parable of respecting Rajab

This parable relates to the sacred times of Sayyidun s . A person fell in love with a woman. One day

he managed to take hold of her. From the commotion of thepeople around, he concluded that they were sighting the moon.He asked the woman, Which months crescent are the peoplelooking at? She replied, The month of Rajab. Although thatperson was a Kfir [unbeliever], upon hearing the sacred nameof Rajab, he immediately moved away from the woman out of

respect and refrained from committing the wrongful act.

Sayyidun s was commanded by Allah to visit that person. Sayyidun s went to

visit that person. He told the commandment of Allah andthe purpose of his visit. Upon hearing this, that persons heartbecame enlightened with the Nr (light) of Islam and eventuallyhe embraced Islam. (Ans-ul-Win, pp. 177)

Dear Islamic brothers! Did you notice the virtues of the Holymonth of Rajab? An unbeliever was blessed with the treasureof mn because of the respect he paid to Rajab. So if a Muslimpaid respect to Rajab, who can estimate the great benefits and

rewards he would deserve in return. Muslims ought to respectthe month of Rajab very much. The Holy Quran also prohibitsthe people from oppressing their own souls in the months ofurma.

    Commenting on the verse

    (so do not wrong

yourselves in those months) it is stated in Nr-ul-Irfn, Abstainfrom sins especially in these four months. (Nr-ul-Irfn, pp. 306)

    Reward of two years

Sayyidun Anas has reported that the Most DignifiedProphet said, The one who observes fasts for

Dear Islamic brothers! The months ofurma meant in theaforementioned ad are the same four i.e. ul-Qada, ul-ijja, Muarram, and Rajab. If you observe fasts in specified

three days in any of these four months, you willgain the reward of worship of two years.

Sayyidun s requested in the court ofAllah , Y Allah ! Is there anyone more honourableto You on this earth than this servant of Yours? Allah replied, O s ( )! Whoever amongst theUmma of Muhammad ( ) fasts a single day in

the month of Rajab is more honourable to me than this person.(Nuza-tul-Majlis, vol. 1, pp. 208)

Imm Jafar diq . There is no reason for declaringthis ritual sinful or impermissible. However on this occasion,

some women read Story of 10 Ladies or Story of a Wood-cutter, that is impermissible as these stories and Story ofJanb-e-Sayyida are unfounded. So avoid reading these stories.Instead, recite Sura Ysn as it will bring the awb of recitingthe Holy Quran ten times.

Remember that it is not a binding to serve Kr in some platteronly; it may be served in any type of crockery and it may bedistributed outside the home as well. In fact, the basis of Niyzand Ftia is l-e-awb1, and serving Knay in the monthof Rajab is a sort of l-e-awb. l-e-awb is proven fromthe Holy Quran and ad. l-e-awb may be performed by

means of supplications and also by Ftia on cooked food.

    Prophets companions would convey awb

Shaykh Allma Jalluddn Suy has reportedthat the companions would feed others on behalf

of the deceased Muslims up to seven days. (Al-w lil-Fatw lis-Suyu, vol. 2, pp. 223)

A companion donated the garden on behalf of his

    mother

When Sayyidun Sad Bin Ubdas mother passed away; he

presented himself in the court of the BelovedProphet and inquired, My mother has died inmy absence; if I donate something in charity on her behalf, willit benefit her? The Noble Prophet replied,Yes. The companion

said, So, I testify making you

a witness that I donate my garden in charity on her behalf.(a Bukhr, vol. 2, pp. 241, ad 2762)

Hence it became evident that conveying awb by feeding mealsand by donating garden that is money is permissible. Knayis in fact spending money for conveying awb.

My master Al arat Imm Amad Raz Khn has stated: Having cooked the meals and donating as charityon behalf of deceased Muslims is undoubtedly permissible andcommendable, and doing Ftia on such meals for the purposeof conveying awb is second commendable act; combining

the two (good) things is nothing but an increase in the goodness.(Fatw Razawiyya, vol. 9, pp. 595)

For every Muslim, it is commendable that whatsoever gooddeeds he performs, he should convey their awb to all thepreceding and succeeding Muslims, whether dead or alive (i.e.

with the awb equivalent to that of all those. (Fatw Razawiyya, vol. 9, pp. 617)

The act of conveying the awb should be done with goodintentions rather than out of ostentation or for the sake ofearning remunerations; otherwise it will not bear awb and

obviously conveying of awb will be meaningless in such casesi.e. when awb has not become due then how can it be conveyedto the deceased? (Bar-e Sharat, vol. 1, pp. 201)

Answer to the evil whisper: Ok. Lets assume that there issome contradiction in date of demise of Sayyidun Imm Jafardiq , but since it is a long lasting traditionamong the Muslims to arrange Knay for his l-e-awb onthe 22nd Rajab-ul-Murajjab and since l-e-awb is permissible

whenever it is done throughout the year, therefore, declaring

Knay as impermissible is a false blame on Shara. Suchfalse accusers should read Verse 87 in Part 7 of Sura Al-Mida

and take heed to the commandment of Allah where it isstated:

O People who believe! Do not forbid the pure things, which Allah

( ) has made lawful for you, and do not cross the limits; indeed

Allah ( ) dislikes the transgressors.

    Fixing the day

Evil whisper: Why has the 3rd and 40th day after death, 12th ofRab-un-Nr, 11th of Rab-ul-Ghau, etc. have been fixed forl-e-awb?

Answer to the evil whisper: As per Shara, it is neitheressential to fix a time or duration for l-e-awb nor there is

any harm in fixing the time for conveying awb. The fixing ofdays is of two kinds:

    1. Shar: Where Shara has specified the time for doingsomething such as animal sacrifice, Hajj, etc.

    2. Urf (customary): Where Shara has not specified thetime but people fix a time at their own for the sake of

mutual convenience or for remembrance or for someother benefit. For example, in these times, the fixing of

time for congregational al in the Masjid is customarywhereas in the past era, there was no such time fixing;congregational al was offered whenever people wouldcongregate. In fact, the Blessed Prophet himself fixed time for several things and similar practiceof fixing the time can be seen in the lives of the companions

and the saints of Islam, for example:

    1. The Holy Prophet scheduled the annualvisit to the holy shrines of martyrs of Uud in the last partof the year. (Dur-re-Manr, vol. 4, pp. 640)

    2. The Beloved and Blessed Prophet usedto visit Masjid-e-Qub on Saturdays. (a Muslim, pp. 724,ad 1399)

    3. The morning and evening time was set for religiouscounselling with Sayyidun iddq Akbar .(a Bukhr, vol. 1, pp. 180, ad 476)

    4. Sayyidun Abdull Bin Masd fixed theday of Thursday for delivering the sermons. (a Bukhr, vol. 1, pp. 42, ad 70)

    5. The scholars of Islam fixed the day of Wednesday forcommencement of new lessons. (Talm-ul-Mutaallim, pp. 72)

    A letter from Attar

Having whirled around the Holy Kaba, having kissed theGrand Green Dome, laden with the blessings of those whoobserve fasts in Rajab, Shabn and Ramadan, this is Salm fromSag-e-Madna Muhammad Ilyas Attar Qadiri Razavi towardsall Islamic brothers, Islamic sisters, teachers and students ofMadrasa-tul-Madna and Jmia-tul-Madna:

! The delightful days are once again at onset. Theholy month of Rajab-ul-Murajjab is about to start. The seed ofworship is sowed in this month, watered with the tears ofrepentance in Shabn-ul-Muaam and the crop of blessingsis harvested in the month of Ramadan-ul-Mubrak.

Excellence of fasts in first three days of Rajab

O those who value Rajab-ul-Murajjab! Be ready to observe

fasts in all days of three continuous months or of as many days

as you can, provided it does not affect efficiency of teaching/learning or job performance. Also Nafl fasts should be avoided

if parents refuse to do so. Apply Qufl-e Madna by eating lessat the time of Saar and Ifr. May the blossoming of fastsprevail in every home and in all my Jmia-tul-Madnas andMadrasa-tul-Madnas! So lets start observing the fasts fromthe very 1st day of Rajab-ul-Murajjab.

What a great excellence fasts of first three days of Rajab-ul-Murajjab bear! Sayyidun Abdull Ibn Abbs has narrated that the Noble Prophet has said,The fast of the first day of Rajab is atonement for three years, the fast of the second day is atonement for two years, the fast ofthe third day is atonement for one year and then the fast of each

remaining day is atonement for one month. (Al-Jmi-u-aghr,pp. 311, ad 5051)

Nafl (supererogatory) fasts bring wonderful blessings. In thiscontext, two Ad are being presented:

    1. Angels ask for forgiveness

Sayyidatun Umm-e-Ummra has reported, TheProphet of mankind, the Peace of our heart and mind, the

Most Generous and Kind visited my home and

I served some food in the blessed court of the Holy Prophet . He said to me, You eat too. I

replied that I am observing fast. The Prophet of Rama said, As long as the food is eaten in front ofone observing fast, the angels keep on asking forgiveness forhim. (Sunan-ut-Tirmi, vol. 2, pp. 205, ad 785)

    2. When do the bones of a fasting person glorify Allah

Once Sayyidun Bill came into the blessed court ofthe Beloved Prophet when the Holy Prophet

was taking breakfast. The Noble Prophet

said, O Bill! Have breakfast. Sayyidun Bill

    said, Y Raslall ( )! I am

observing fast. The Great Prophet replied, Weare eating our sustenance while Bills sustenance is escalatingin the Paradise. O Bill! Are you aware of the fact that as longas the food is eaten in front of a person observing fast, his bonescontinue to glorify Allah and the angels supplicate for him.(Shuabul mn, vol. 3, pp. 297, ad 3586)

The renowned exegete of the Holy Quran Muft Amad YrKhan has stated: It is evident from this that if aguest arrives whilst you are taking food, asking him to eat is aSunna. But this offer should be from the core of the heart andnot superficial.

The guest should not tell a lie saying that he has no desire toeat. Instead, if the guest observes that there is less food or if he

does not feel desire to eat then he should say . It was alsorevealed that one need not to conceal his good deeds from theBeloved Prophet , instead these should berevealed so that the Noble Prophet may bearwitness for these deeds. This revealing does not fall in thecategory of ostentation. Whatever was said having heard about

Bills fast has been explained as:

We are eating our todays sustenance here, whereas SayyidunBill will avail his sustenance in lieu of this inParadise and that recompense will be better in quality and morein quantity. However, this ad conveys clear message. Certainly

every bone and joint and even every fibre of the body of theperson observing fast glorify Allah at that time, of whichthat person is unaware, but the Beloved and Blessed Prophet

listens to it. (Mirt-ul-Manj, vol. 3, pp. 202)
