voice lessons,

walking Sparky,

babysitting your little sister,

Page 8: The retired kid

not to mention having to eat your vegetables!

So, one day, Brian decided to retire.“It’s been a wonderful eight years,” he said,“but I need a break.”

Page 10: The retired kid

His parents thought he was joking,So they threw him a retirement party.

Page 11: The retired kid

But Brian was serious. The next day, he flew to Florida, to the Happy Sunset Retirement Community.

Page 12: The retired kid

Happy Sunset was a lovely place. There was a swimming pool,Tennis courts, and a snack bar.“Wow!” thought Brian,“I should have retired years ago.”

Happy Sunset was full of interesting people. There were…

Ethel

Wally

Tex

Myrtle

and Phyllis.

Page 14: The retired kid

And there was Harvey, a retired plumber.“So, what did you used to do? He asked Brian.“Uh, I was a kid.”“A kid?” said Harvey. “That’s hard work!”

Page 15: The retired kid

Being retired was not hard work. There were card games.

Page 16: The retired kid

There was golf.

Page 17: The retired kid

There were long afternoon naps.

Page 18: The retired kid

Or to the movies.“So, what do you think, kid?”“Isn’t retirement a blast?”

Page 19: The retired kid

Or watching long documentaries on TV.

Page 20: The retired kid

But Brian wasn’t sure.Being retired meant havingto listen to Tex go on and on About his hip replacement,

Page 21: The retired kid

looking at hundreds of snapshots of Myrtle’s grandchildren,

Page 22: The retired kid

There were other things, too, like morning yoga,

Page 23: The retired kid

knitting classes,

Page 24: The retired kid

weekly checkups(when Brian wasn’t even feeling sick!),

Page 25: The retired kid

Friday-night swing dancing,

Page 26: The retired kid

Wally’s prune juice smoothies,

Page 27: The retired kid

not to mention sitting on Ethel’s false teeth!

Page 28: The retired kid

After three weeks of retirement,Brian was fed up.“It’s no use,” he said. “I don’t fit in.”

Page 29: The retired kid

“Listen, kid,” said Harvey,“when retirement gets you down, you have to think back to the good old days.”

“The good old days?”

“Never fails,” said Harvey.

Page 30: The retired kid

So, Brian found a quiet spotunder a palm tree and thoughtback to the good old days.

Page 31: The retired kid

Very soon he started remembering things.Good things – like the time he scored a goal for the soccer team,

Page 32: The retired kid

the time he aced his maths test,

Page 33: The retired kid

the time he hit the perfect note on his violin!

Page 34: The retired kid

He remembered singing in the school musical,

Page 35: The retired kid

making his sister laugh,

Page 36: The retired kid

throwing Sparky the ball!

Page 37: The retired kid

He even remembered that broccoli wasn’t so badIf you covered it with cheddar cheese.

Page 38: The retired kid

Brian made up his mind.“Hey, Harvey,” he said,“I’ve decided to come out of retirement.”Harvey wasn’t surprised.“Well, I’ll miss you, kid.”

Page 39: The retired kid

The next morning, Brian packed his things and wished everybody atHappy Sunset the best. Then caught the first flight back home.

Page 40: The retired kid

His parents were happy to see him.

Page 41: The retired kid

So were his teachers and all of his pals. “It’s hard work being a kid,” said Brian, “but guess what?”
