Hundreds Come to Light Up the AlleyThank you to the over 500 residents who came to Showtime Bowling for the 15th annual night

Every year RHA puts on a cosmic bowling program. This year was the 15th annual RHA Bowling Program: Light Up the Alley. On September 25, 2013 at 10pm, we had the entire Show-time Bowl Alley rented out and ready for a night of fun! We were amazed with the large turnout this year—over 500 residents! This year we tried to im-

plement a new element to the program: free provided trans-portation from the halls to the off-campus bowling alley. There were three stops on the bus route—Russell Hall, Rutherford Hall, and ECV Dining Hall. After the first two buses left Russell Hall, the buses were full! The pro-gram had a long line stretching all the way around the parking lot,

but we had interactive games in the line to keep residents busy as well as an MC who kept residents entertained and gave away pro-motional items. The program was set up so a resident would have a free bowling game, pizza, and a t-shirt, all of which went fast! Over-all, the program was a huge suc-cess. We surpassed our goal for

attendance and made sure that everyone that waited in line was able to bowl. We had so much fun creating this program for the resi-dents and hope to see you all at our future programs! Did you come to Light Up the Alley? Tag yourself on our Facebook photo album.

RHA Has High Hopes for Homecoming 2013

Several University Union events are taking place later this month and in early November

residence hall and there will be two first place winners (one large building and one small building). The Homecoming Parade will be held on November 8, maneuver-ing through downtown Athens.

For the parade, RHA will be making a float.

The Day of Ser-vice will be held on multiple days, includ-ing a station based ser-vice opportu-nity on Tate plaza and an

actual day of ser-vice in the com-munity. There is

also window painting at a local business along the parade route that will be held on November 4. If you are interested in any of the events listed above please email me!

It’s that time of year ev-eryone! Homecoming is upon us once again. This is yet another opportunity for you all as resi-dents to get to show your UGA Pride! The theme this year is “There’s No Place Like HOMEcoming.” RHA is going to be involved in the majority of the events that are being sponsored by University Union. These events in-clude: Street Painting at the Tate bus stop on November 3. A Banner Com-petition on October 25. A Lip Sync Competition will be held No-vember 7, and if you bring in cans from your hall to the RHA office located in Creswell, you might win a Pizza and Dance Party with the RHA Executive Board! Welcome to the first Green Off of the 2013 – 2014 Academic Year. This section of The Resident will compare two concepts or products—one of which will be a sustainable concept or product. Each day, you can make thousands of decisions between doing something the “green” way or keeping your habits the same.

Some “green” movements are easier to work into your life than oth-ers. And for those decisions that really challenge you, it’s important to weigh the costs and benefits of choosing one way over the other. In this Green Off, we will be looking at Homemade Halloween vs. Store Bought.

HOMEMADE HALLOWEEN STORE BOUGHT HALLOWEEN• Make your own costume• Make your own decorations• Make your own candy (instead of buying store bought)• Use all natural ingredients for make-up (i.e. naturally-made fake blood for vampire costumes)

• Store bought costume• Store-bought decorations• Store-bought candy

BENEFITS1. Healthier treats2. Less artificial ingredients (in the candy and the make-up)3. More opportunities for creativity4. Less pollution from the production and wrapping of Halloween candy and costumes5. More personalized decorations 6. Significantly cheaper7. Recycling and reusing of materials8. More original/unique9. More opportunities to support local businesses and charities

1. More convenient2. Less time-consuming3. Tastier treats (some would disagree)4. More “mainstream”

1. More time-consuming2. More difficult

1. Worse for the environment2. You won’t know where all everything came from3. More expensive4. Less healthy5. Less unique6. Wasteful7. Causes more pollution (especially the individually-wrapped candy)

From the PresidentThank you residents for a great first few months Hey RHA! I hope you have all had some time to recover from midterms! I want to thank those of you who turned out for our annual bowling program Light Up the Al-ley. It was a huge success and I’d like to think that you all had as much fun attending it as the RHA exec board had putting it on. Special shout out to Jack Moran and Devonna Nickeo for putting on such a fantastic program! This coming Wednesday we’ll be hosting Scream on the Green, a program you don’t want to miss. So grab some friends and come to Myers Quad to get some free snacks and free scares as we all watch Insidious together!

The program starts at 8:00 p.m. but get there early and bring your UGA ID card with a hous-ing sticker to get special promo items (but you can still bring your off campus friends to enjoy the movie)! Also be on the lookout for our upcoming Supporting the Arts program! We will keep you posted as soon as more information be-comes available! As always, it’s an honor to serve as President. If you have any concerns, feel free to con-tact me.

Residence Hall Studios to Kick Off New ShowTune into Housing Channel 12 in the coming

weeks to see “Faces of Athens” If you’re reading this, then odds are you’re attending the University of Georgia, one of the nation’s most diverse col-lege campuse. Everyday, as you walk to class or study outside, you get glimpses of hundreds of faces. You might recognize some people, be friends with a few, but for every person you know there are at least two or three that you don’t. To you, those people are background, the white noise. Res-idence Hall Studios’ new short, “Faces of Athens,” tries to break the boundaries of social norms and give you an insight into these different faces. Not only do these people have different heritages and interests, but they also have had unique experiences that give them different views of the world. Every person has a story that

can’t possibly be learned from a short encounter, but that doesn’t mean that a short encounter can’t give you a window through which you can learn a little more about them, and even a little more about yourself. To make this vi-sion a reality, a camera crew along with the host of the show, Robert Miller, go around Athens and talk to the people they pass, asking questions about their lives and experiences. If you want to see the show, just watch Housing 12 on UGA Cablevision. Also, if you would like to get involved with this or any other RHS production, please contact us at [email protected] or visit our website at rhs.uga.edu.

Hopefully you know a little about what RHA does for you. We try to make your housing expe-rience all that it can be. But did you know we throw more than just awesome programs every month? We also work with other RHA’s across the state, region, and nation to always keep work-ing to get better. The Georgia Residence Hall Organization (GRHO) hosts a conference each year for all of the RHA’s in the state. During this annual confer-ence, we meet to share ideas, network, and recognize each oth-er’s achievements. On January 24 and 25 of next year, the Uni-versity of Georgia is honored to host GRHO 2014 with the theme of GRHOin’ Up ‘90s! This conference is go-ing to put UGA in the spotlight, and as the GRHO Committee and Volunteer Chair, I am ask-ing for your help! We are looking

for volunteers to help the week-end run smoothly and efficiently. There are three ways you can get involved: volunteering before-hand, day of preparations, and/or attending the conference as a delegate. The GRHO committee helps prepare beforehand with tasks such as making signs and decorations, creating door decorations for dele-gates from the schools across Georgia, orga-nizing packets, and other fun projects, and meets Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m. in the RHA office. We will need lots of volunteers during the conference to help di-rect delegates around our campus, set up programming, register schools, etc. You also have the opportunity to experience GRHO

and represent UGA during the conference by applying to be a UGA delegate for which a sepa-rate application will be available. We encourage everyone to get involved because we don’t of-ten host events that allow us to interact with other school orga-

nizations that have the

GRHOsame goals as we do. If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions about the confer-ence in general, please contact me or visit our GRHO volunteer website to apply.

Order Your Exam Care Package Soon

Ease the stress of finals with this $30 package - or better yet, have your parents pay!

Finals are a time in a col-lege student’s life where he or she feels stressed and in need of love. ECPs, or Exam Care Packages, are a lifeline sent by parents or guardians to a student during finals to ease stress and help them “finish the drill.” Finals are in the near fu-ture, which means your parent or guardian can start ordering their ECP. What comes in one? Well, this year we have included items such as a UGA travel coffee mug, school supplies, and snacks and coupons for meals around UGA. We also included add-ons such as a red Nalgene water bottle and a large one-topping pizza! A brochure for the ECPs is being sent out to all on campus resi-dents’ non-UGA addresses this month, but you can download one on our website here.

New this year, parents or guardians are able to pay via credit card, making payment that much easier. Another new aspect of the 2013 ECPs is the cus-tomizable option for dietary con-cerns. We have many substitutes for allergies such as peanut, veg-etarian, and gluten-free. So this year tell your par-ents or guardians to order you an ECP through RHA. Yes, it’s a mouthful, but it’s sure to help you when you need it. Or you can even surprise your friend or room-mate with an ECP as a way to show your appreciation! Payment is due November 20th. Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have and good luck with the close of the semester!

How to Survive the Upcoming Winter

Living on campus during the cold months can be hard. Here are some tips for adjusting.

You have probably already noticed the moody temperature and crunchy leaves all over cam-pus. The official signs of Fall and Winter are already here! To help you prepare for living on campus this cold season, here is a list of must haves for any room. Throw blanket: Your room is going to get pretty cold this winter. It’s never fun to sit on a futon with no covers just to have your feet freeze into little toe-si-cles. A Georgia throw blanket will easily solve these problems! Thermal mugs: The best treat during the winter is a warm, chocolate flavored beverage. With a nice thermal mug you can carry this to class and help you stay warm at those freezing bus stops. Area rugs: Most of the residence halls do not have car-peted floors. An area rug gives

you both a warm snuggly surface as well as a soft landing. Hand warmers: Studying in the lounge? Hate the cold tundra atmosphere? How about some hand warmers to put in your pocket! It’s also great to have them if you are outside for long periods of times. They hide per-fectly in your pockets so you can still seem slick with your hands in your pocket! Hand sanitizer: It is cold. Everyone is inside. That mean’s indoors is an incubating battle-field of bacteria and pathogens. Keep healthy with some hand sanitizers and encourage any guests that walk into your room to use some too!

Supporting the ArtsWin tickets to the UGA Ballroom’s “Frosty For-

mal” and learn about what’s on tap!

One mission of RHA is to support the local arts. To this end, we have purchased 30 tickets to the UGA Ballroom’s upcoming “Frosty Formal” on Tuesday, De-cember 3, from 8-10:30 p.m, wth a lesson beforehand at 7 p.m. All you have to do to get a ticket for free is to be a resident on cam-pus and fill out this two minute residents’ concerns survey. The first 30 to do so will get one of the free tickets! In other very exciting arts news, we are teaming up with

Athens Word of Mouth, a local organization that provides a plat-form for exciting poetry readings, to put on a program in Novem-ber. While the details are still in the works, we will be renting out a space on campus, having fa-mous poets come and perform, and giving you a microphone to show off your stuff, with of course giveaways and food. Stay connected for more information!
