Now what?

You and who’s army? The Blue Flash Music Trust

and other Town Hall cam-paigners said the ‘battle is halfwon’ after Bill’s Produce an-nounced they had pulledplans to open a restaurant atthe historic site.

The popular cafe and pro-duce store had become frus-trated with the delays and

expense incurred primarilybecause of the determinedstance of Blue Flash.

Horsham District Councilhas expressed huge disap-pointment at Bill’s announce-ment. They had seen Bill’sProduce, with some justifica-tion, as the ideal tenant forthe site. Now they must pur-sue other avenues.

But what will happen now?The council will set aboutfinding another restaurant todeal with, while the BlueFlash continue to fight for theTown Hall to be used as acommunity hall.

Both sides have under-standable intentions, but arepoles apart. A compromiselooks less likely than ever, and

while the campaigners mayclaim a moral victory, havethey- with their disruptivetactics - inadvertently dam-aged our chances of securinga decent alternative locationfor community groups to use?

One battle may be over, butanother is surely just aroundthe corner...

It was a big idea thatwould lead to a big debateand, ultimately, a big deci-sion.

But Bill’s Produce hasbacked out of its ambition toset up shop at Horsham’shistoric Town Hall, seem-ingly just as the debatestage was coming to the endof its exhaustive, costly anddivisive run.

There’s a sense of crush-ing disappointment at Hor-sham District Council.

It would seem that bring-ing Bill’s in to town wasseen by some of the leadingcouncil officers as being ahuge boost to the regenera-tion of ‘The Quarter’.

Their motive would seemto be only partly inspired bymoney. They had viewedBill’s Produce as the perfecttenant for the site, so muchso that another, higher offerwas rejected in favour ofBill’s.

But speaking at the end oflast week, Bill Collison of

Bill's Café and ProduceStore said: “Regrettably wehave had to withdraw fromthis transaction due to thesubstantial de-lays in pro-gressing theplanning.

“Duringthis period

we havebeen

seeking alternative sites toopen.

“We have since found al-ternative sitesthat we have com-

mitted to andare unableto proceedwith theTownHall

in addition to these.“It is frustrating that the

delays caused by a few peo-ple have gone on for so longand that much time, effortand resources have been ex-pended by both sides.

“The Town Hall will makea great restaurant site and Iwish Horsham DistrictCouncil all the best for itsfuture and look forward toseeing it open.

“I'm sure that its conver-sion to a restaurant will cre-ate a focal point in thesquare that will greatly addto the amenities of the areaand benefit the community.”

The ‘few people’ men-tioned, who have causedthese delays are primarilyfrom the Blue Flash MusicTrust.

They have campaignedagainst the project in favourof a community and folkarts centre at the Old TownHall.

Throughout they havemaintained that they haveoverwhelming public support- even yesterday this beliefwas unwavering. However, comments on the HorshamFacebook page would suggestthat many of the town’s peo-ple would have welcomedBill’s at the Town Hall.

Certainly the Blue Flash’sintentions were well mean-ing, but their increasingly

forceful campaign is unlikelyto have done them anyfavours in securing a folk artscentre. And it’s even more un-likely that the Trust will begetting a Christmas card fromHorsham District Councilnext month.

Having quashed the coun-

cil’s plans, it’s unclear whatwill happen next. But wewouldn’t bet on the council’snext move to involve bowingdown to the demands of theBlue Flash Music Trust! Quitethe opposite in fact, they’vevowed to find another qualityrestaurant for the site...

A Spokesman for the Trustsaid: "Following the publica-tion of the superior Gondolaoffer, Bill's Produce obviouslyhad a moral choice to matchthe £72,500 per annum andother terms.

It appears that Bill's wasnot prepared to do this, par-ticularly given the continuedstrength of feeling amongstHorsham people for commu-nity use.

“We believe this to be anhonourable stance by Bill'sand wish them well. I am alsoconvinced the townspeoplewould welcome them withopen arms to any of the many

vacant A3 restaurant venuesin Horsham sometime soon.

“In my view, the Councilcannot now realistically con-tinue with trying to find an-other restaurant.

“The lack of interest in theface of such public oppositionwas apparent even before the

Cabinet took the final fatefulrestaurant decision in Febru-ary 2009.

“I believe it is time for theCouncil to finally instruct theCabinet to "call it a day". Welook forward to a renewedoffer of negotiations fromHDC with a view to creating amajor tourist asset for Hor-sham at the site of the OldTown Hall."

Cllr Robert Nye, Leader ofHorsham District Council, said: “This news is a huge dis-appointment, especially as wehave only recently had confir-mation from the Judicial Re-view that the Council actedcorrectly in its dealings in re-lation to the Town Hall.

“Having said that, the ra-tionale of the business case isstill as strong as before.

“Add to this the success ofadjoining East Street and itsmany and varied gastronomicofferings, and I am confident

that we will secure an alter-native quality restaurant atthe site and we are now look-ing into this.”

The Order advertising theproposed works on behalf ofBill's Produce has finally beenremoved from the Old TownHall in the last week.

A petition has beenlaunched to save the WestStreet market, which isunder threat because ofthe new Travelodge.

Stores such as Sainbury’sand Wilkinsons have petitionsheets, as well as a numberof smaller shops and inde-pendents, while many peopleon the Horsham Facebookpage have expressed disap-pointment at the news.

Horsham District Councilhad planned for the marketto end in the next few weeks, before the opening of thenew hotel, but this will nowbe partly delayed by allowingstalls to remain in WorthingRoad up to Christmas.

Currently there are more

than a dozen market stalls ona Saturday and Thursday, in-cluding a butcher, baker, green grocers, and stalls sell-ing tools, shoes, toys, framedpictures and handbags.

Chloe Seabrook has run astall at the market for 11years. She said: “Travelodgedoesn’t want its customers tosee the roofs of the marketstalls. But we’re not talkingSouth Lodge here - this is a£20 a night hotel!

“If we get rid of the marketsurely it means we’re not amarket town?

“This is a big shock to thetraders, as for many it’s theirlivelihood. They have to findan alternative town. A lot ofcustomers, traders and otherbusinesses are upset about it.Apache (fashion store) be-lieve a lot of their trade isgenerated from the marketon Saturdays.”

A spokesperson for Hor-sham District Council said:“The location and quality ofHorsham's markets is regu-larly under review becausethe Council, together withlocal businesses, wants to en-sure that all of the town'smarkets add positively to theexperience of the townamongst shoppers and othervisitors.

“Whilst the Council is notobliged or contracted to havemarket traders in the town, much positive feedback is re-

ceived about those marketstalls that offer high qualityand unusual items for sale, with customers visiting Hor-sham as a result.

“The Council has been inconsultation with the mar-ket's operator in West Street

for sometime over these pro-posals to remove marketstalls from Horsham's WestStreet and Worthing Road, and to refocus the market ona smaller number of stalls inthe area to the north of theShelley Fountain.

“The timing for this hasbeen planned to coincidewith the opening of thenearby new Travelodge hoteland other shops in the area, whilst where possible seek-ing to relocate displacedmarket traders from WestStreet elsewhere in the towncentre.”

Advice from the expert I recently started to think about the future and ways to ensure financial security for my family. I amworried that I could leave behind a large InheritanceTax Bill and wondered what I can do to reduce it?

When surviving spouses, including civil partners, were given the right to offset against the value of their estate any unused IHT allowance left over from their late spouse’s estate there was generous applause from all quarters. But this concession has brought about the almost complete demise of the nil rate band will trust.

Further investigation might reveal the need to have not one but two such trusts however. This would apply to those who remarry after the death of their first spouse, and for the spouses of such persons. Such occurrences are not so uncommon these days and the very considerable IHT savings available are invariably not fully appreciated following a second marriage.

For those who have included a nil rate band will trust in their wills and are wondering whether or not to keep it, each case should be reviewed very carefully as the current IHT regime could change. Other will trusts including spousal by-pass trusts are also not used to the extent necessary to ensure those who could benefit from them do so.

Estate planning per se can be really dull but knowing that the time spent will save the next generation considerable amounts of IHT, leaving them with more of the family wealth to enjoy, should put a smile on their faces.

Real passion behind Kiss

Another op’nin’ of anothershow then for Horsham Am-ateur Operatic and Dra-matic Society.

This time around it is KissMe Kate, with a five night runat the Capitol theatre kickingoff in front of a healthy, loyalaudience on Tuesday night.

Cole Porter’s play, a hugeBroadway hit, is set in Balti-more and adopts a play-within-a-play plot, with actorsperforming a musical versionof Shakespeare's The Tamingof the Shrew.

But it gets complicated aseach of the four main castmembers' on-stage perform-ance is complicated by what ishappening in his or her off-stage life.

From the famous openingnumber of HAODS’ take onKiss Me Kate, it was apparentthat, as always, the cast wouldcertainly look the part.

With more than 50 years ofcostumes hanging on tightly

squeezed racks and countlessboxes of props to choose fromat their Broadbridge Heathbase, in a room that givessome idea of what thewardrobe room might looklike if Lady Gaga andMadonna ever tour together, producing a colourful showwas never likely to be anissue.

But would this be a case ofstyle over substance?

After all, planning hasn’tgone too smoothly this timearound. A lead actor comingin from outside of the groupthat could not always be at re-hearsals and a lead actressthat - ten days before openingnight - had lost her voice. Onefemale cast member even hadto fill in as a boy at late notice, although with the Shake-spearian theme of Kiss MeKate, that didn’t really matter.

As it transpired, Lee Power(playing Fred Graham/Pertruchio) and Debby Field(Lili Vanessi/Katherine orKate) were the two standoutperformers of the night.

Lee, as actor and directorFred Graham, as well atPertruchio, the man that must‘tame the shrew’ in the tour-ing production of the play set

within the play, was charis-matic, humorous, and was thedominant stage presence.

He was also the standoutvocal performer, althoughDebby too did a fine job, showing no signs of her re-

cent sore throat. As Kate, shewas a ‘shrew’ personified, giv-ing a feisty, spirited perform-ance, showing real attitudeduring numbers such as ‘IHate Men’. A bit of me thinksshe meant it!

However, while both per-formed well individually, there was sadly a lack ofchemistry between the two

leads.Much the same could be

said of Gus Fryatt (as Bill Cal-houn/ Lucentio) and KatyKinsella (Lois/Bianca). Wesuspect - but may be wrong -that with the lack of young

men looking to tread theboards locally, Gus may findhimself as a strong candidatefor any roles relating to anymale part aged between 15and 30!

As in previous shows, Gusdemonstrated his growingvocal and acting talent, even ifhe did look a little too youngwhen partnered with his

scene-stealing on-stage part-ner Katy Kinsella as Lois/Bianca. The long-legged Katywas both sassy and saucy andshowed a natural flair forcomic timing.

Other noteworthy perform-ances came from Kim Fen-wick, who did justice to one ofthe show’s stand-out num-bers, ‘Too Darn Hot’, andTim Shepherd, who en-joyed himself as a gangsteralongside Chris Shanks.

It wasn’t the most pol-ished performance; afew of the danceroutines neededa little morework as therewas a littledisorganisa-tionamongstthe ranks, and the setsperhapsdidn’t doenough tohelp theoccasionallylost audienceto differentiatebetween whatwas real andwhat was ‘theplay’. I also felt

the play was lacking much ofthe wit of some previousHAODS productions, with thelaughs really few and far be-tween. But there are morepositives than negatives.

As with all HAODS shows, you know there are twothings that, whatever hap-

pens, won’t let you down. One is costumes, andthe other is the musicalscore. Once again the

ever-smiling BrianSteel and his bandperformed admirably,

seemingly evencompensating

for those shortdelays for theoccasional for-

gotten line.With only

a few emptyseats,HAODShave shown

they arestill aspopular

as ever, and Kiss MeKate has donenothing totarnish theirfine reputa-tion.

Anyone that has attended theBattle of the Bands nights (theheats or the final) will knowthat Horsham has an abundanceof rock acts.

Anything else, such as PhraseMob or Retrospect, sounds almostnovelty, such is the dominance ofguitar based music locally.

This was typified by the coverssection of the Horsham Battle ofthe Bands at the Holbrook Club onSunday night. Four of the fivebands exclusively played hits bytheir favourite bands - namelyKorn, Pearl Jam, The Pixies, andBowling for Soup. A sixth band, that never showed, were calledNirvana Sound...

So it was quite refreshing whenyoungsters The Daly Prophetscame on stage and played a vibrantmix of tracks, including Livin’ LaVida Loco and Love Shack.

However, the honours went tounquestionably the tightest, mostefficient band of the night, Korn onthe Kob.

They exploded onto the stagewith the first live appearance intwo years from dynamic frontmanRichie Owen, who once again hadput together a metal supergroupand fronted a fierce cacophonyof sound with his unforget-table physical presence andpowerful vocals.

He even made use of “thebleeper” to edit out themore colourful lyrics!

The band had the mostauthentic sound and itwas great to see guitaristDavid Thompson backon stage again.

Next, popular localcovers band “Solice”became Stone Gossardand the Wonder Brasfor their take onPearl Jam numbers. It was a bravechoice - the Ameri-can band them-selves were alwayssomething of an ac-quired taste, notleast for Eddie Ved-der’s vocals.

But frontman BradHarper and his be-

wigged band members gave afaithful rendition, even if thecrowd weren’t necessarily buyinginto the songs.

The Allisons gave us music byThe Pixies fan, but once again theyoung crowd, unfamiliar with thesongs, found it difficult to relate to.

The band perhaps didn’t helpthemselves by not playing the twosongs most people might haverecognised (Where is My Mind?and Here Comes Your Man) andthey also lack a female - The Pixiesbass player sang backing vocalsand occasional lead vocals. Butstill, you can’t knock the guys forplaying songs they love and tryingto spread the music to new, youngfans.

The next band Luckiest Loserwere teenagers playing their firstever gig ,which was a bit dauntinggiven the size of the crowd butthey went for it and gave a goodperformance and got better asthey went through their set ofBowling for Soup hits, encouragedby their friends and followers.

The jaunty American Pop-punksongs went down well with theyoung crowd, not least the catchysingalong ‘The Girl all the BadGuys Want’.

The last band, The DalyProphets, are a talentedteenage all-singing 7-pieceparty band featuring saxo-phone and male and female

vocals and gave a short setof dance floorfillers which hadthe crowd tap-ping their feet

and grooving intheir seats to songssuch as Poker Faceby Lady Gaga.

They wereawarded third

place, with Stone Gos-sard and the WonderBras finishing runners upto Korn on the Kob, who

donated their £100 prizeto Cancer Research.

In terms of victorieschalked up, Saturday won’tgo down as one of the mostsuccessful nights in the his-tory of Horsham AmateurBoxing Club.

But the fight night at theHolbrook Club was again afine example of why the club’sbig events continue to proveso popular, as each fighterwearing the blue colours ofHorsham gave it their all, infront of a huge and vocalcrowd.

While there’s little argu-ment that it was Ian Bradleywho again starred in the fightof the night, perhaps Hor-sham’s stand out performerwas Danny Kirkland.

The young fighter was acomfortable victor once againagainst Jack Stringer. He wasquick and composed from theoutset, moving fast on his feetbut never losing his discipline.

He caught his opponent in thefirst round and delivered twogreat blows with his left in thethird and final round to en-sure victory.

Bradley’s fight against B.Kudus was a bloody en-counter.

Bradley, owner of Hor-sham’s most bone-crunchinghandshake, was as alwaysquick out of the blocks, havingto punch upwards against hisfar taller opponent.

Showing far more attackingintent than his rival, the Hor-sham fighter was well on topin the first two rounds, easilyreading the slow movingKudus’ telegrammed punches.

But this windmill effectworked in the third, and thebig man from the red cornerhad Bradley on the ropes.Whether or not the bell savedthe Horsham fighter from los-ing to a knockout is anyone’s

guess, but certainly the visit-ing boxer had ended the en-gaging contest well on top.

At that point, Horsham hadlost the opening three fights.Junior fighter HarryOrsini fought wellbut lost out to thesprightly Ruislipfighter.

TomHooleyim-provedas his fightwent onand wason top inthe third, but lost outon points, asdid Tom Sul-livan.

Merle Cav-agnuolo wasout of theblocks like a race

horse and gave his opponentno time to settle. His oppo-nent could do nothing tocounter his speed and agilityand it was a brisk victory forthe Horsham fighter early in

the second.Archie Hutchinson took

on Jacob Gabriel, but theHorsham

boxer,

adopting his trademark lowstance position, could not de-liver the telling blows on hisopponent.

But like all of Horsham’sperformers on the night, theeffort could not be faulted.

Ben Pringle, with his che-quered shorts and pulled upblue socks, went out on thering looking more like a foot-baller than a boxer. But therewas to be no diving around, ashe provided a stern test for atalented young fighter fromWest Tree ABC.

Pringle recovered well froma quick flurry of punches fromhis opponent in the second, but lost out on points.

The night’s final bout in-volved Dan Purchase, one ofthe club’s most popular fight-ers, which ensured few hadgone home early. Unfortu-nately he wasn’t able to pro-vide the grandstand finish he

dearly wanted, losing out toWill Brock.

Cheered on by the crowd, and with little in it after thefirst two rounds, the Horshamboxer went for it in the finalround, and it could be arguedthat he wanted the win themost. But he didn’t get it, los-ing out in a majority decision.

While not the best night forthe trophy cabinet, the nightdid highlight all that is goodabout the club with everyoneboxing with spirit, disciplineand sportsmanship.

All of the boxers would liketo thank club coaches LeeColes, Ben Gumbrill andShaun Stepney for their helpand support. Another clubnight is set for 5th March2011.

The Horsham Symphony Or-chestra, under its principalconductor, Steve Dummer, andleader, Barry Sutton, openstheir 2010-11 concert seasonon Saturday, 20th November atthe Capitol, Horsham.

The concert will featureMendelssohn’s much loved ViolinConcerto and the orchestra is de-lighted to welcome Rachel Ellis, guest leader of the HSO, in herinaugural performance as soloistwith the orchestra.

Rachel has been playing the vi-olin since the age of nine and re-ceived her first training at theKent Junior Music School inMaidstone.

She won a scholarship to theRoyal College of Music, whereshe regularly played with theRCM chamber music on toursboth at home and abroad. Rachelhas lived in Horsham with herfamily for the past 14 years andcombines teaching with playingin many local musical ensembles.

She has recently acquired a200 year old violin which shewill be playing in the concert.

The concerto follows a per-formance of ‘Dances of Galanta’,by the Hungarian composer,Zoltan Kodaly (1882–1967).

During the nineteenth century, army recruiters in Austria usedto travel around with dancers

and musicians in tow in an at-tempt to enlist young men.

The style of dance used, the‘Verbunken’, was the basis of thisorchestral suite, which was firstperformed in 1933.

After the interval, the orches-tra will perform Beethoven’s 3rdSymphony, more commonlyknown as the ‘Eroica’ Symphony. This magnificent work of art hasbecome so well-known and em-braced by the listening publicthat it hard to believe quite howradical this music was at the timeit was composed (1803).

Beethoven tore through musi-cal convention to produce a tow-ering work of genius that is filledwith the full gamut of emotions, ranging from despair and sorrowthrough to affirmation and cele-bration of the human spirit.

The concert will commence at7.30pm. Tickets are priced at£12, £10 for concessions over 60and £5 for under 18s. Tickets canbe purchased in advance fromThe Capitol Box Office on 01403750220 or online at www.the-capitolhorsham.com.

My idea of heaven is a nightin front of the TV withJamie, Gordon or MichelleRoux, the Kings and Queensof cuisine.

I’m addicted to all thingscooking and apparently I’mnot the only one. It seemswe’re all falling head overheels in love with high classhome cooking.

Dedicated food lovers

around the country are in-dulging in their own real lifeversions of Come Dine withMe and they’re demanding thehigh class products to matchtheir enthusiasm in thekitchen department.

Originally founded by Davidand Liz Phillips in 1985 on thesite of the former ‘SteamerInn’ in Alfriston, Sussex,Steamer Trading can satisfy

most demands.Housing one of the widest

kitchenware ranges in theworld with over 10,000 itemsfrom the best names, its prod-ucts include everyday basicslike knives, cookware, tea tow-els, coffee machines andcrockery as well as more luxu-rious, unusual pieces such asauthentic North African cook-ing pots, salamanders andeven duck presses. The onlything it doesn’t sell is the fooditself.

Now a quarter of a centuryold, award-winning SteamerTrading has 25 stores acrossSouthern England with num-bers 26 and 27 already on thecards.

Each branch is unique in itsarchitectural individuality butthe same in its philosophy. From a former Victorian rail-way station in Heathfield to aconverted church hall inBrighton, every store remainsfamily owned and run, and isjust as passionate as the nextfor providing the finest in

David, the original BuyingDirector of Habitat, and Liz,the former Home Editor of theSunday Times, ran SteamerTrading until 2001 when theirson Ben took over as Manag-ing Director.

Working from the companyHQ in Lewes, Ben explained:“I grew up in retail, sur-rounded by good design, aspart of a family who havebeen retailers for many years. In fact, we can trace our shopkeeping roots back to Aldgate,London, in 1870.

“We have always been de-voted to building and main-taining long-termrelationships with our cus-tomers. If we can do some-thing to makesomeone’s shop-ping experiencereally special, we’llalways try to doit.”

The SteamerTrading buyingteam source prod-ucts from all overthe world, travel-ling extensively insearch of the ulti-mate items and toensure quality, thecompany testseverything per-sonally before itmakes it onto the

shelves.Ben said: “We’re always

looking for the best in termsof design, functionality andvalue. If we can see somethingsitting in someone’s kitchenand we are fully satisfied thatit meets our very strict crite-ria, we’ll include it in ourrange.

History comes to lifeTales from the Great War came alive for ForestPupils this week when local amateur historian GaryCooper visited the school to speak to pupils abouthis book – Horsham’s Hero’s of the Great War1914-19.

After more than 6 years of investigation and re-search Mr Cooper has gathered together the per-sonal stories of the 359 casualties commemoratedon the town’s memorial.

This often very poignant insight into the lives ofthose who made the ultimate sacrifice for theircountry brought the work the pupils have beendoing in the classroom to life.

Filippo Marziano arrived in Horsham from his native Sicily in 1991.

At first glance at the pictures most of you will recognise him from his 14 years at Panino’s in the Carfax. In his time he has seen many comings and goings in the tapestry of Horsham’s recent restaurant past.

It has always been his dream to own and chef in his own Classic Italian Restaurant preparing authentic Italian cuisine while sourcing the finest ingredients from his homeland.

So four years ago Filippo’s Italian Restaurant in Piries Place was born.

Conveniently situated next to the car park and seating up to 60 guests, Filippo’s Restaurant has undergone a complete refurbishment with the aim of providing a high class, typically Italian atmosphere.

All dishes are freshly made and cooked to order, guests

are even welcome in the kitchen to watch Filippo at work.

An impressive sight is watching the chef toss the pizza dough which has previously been freshly made moments earlier using imported flour from the home of pizza, Napoli. Nothing here is pre-made, vacuum packed or bought in, everything is cooked on site in the authentic Italian way.

Filippo’s is a family business and children are welcome, in fact they have the pick of the whole menu in smaller portions. A take away service for the full a la carte menu is also available.

Knowing what is on offer in the town now, owner and chef Filippo Marziano is eager for people to come and try his cooking and judge for themselves. He is confident he will be welcoming them back soon.

It is always the tradition atthe end of the panto that thefollowing year’s 'subject' isannounced.

Yes, that's how far in ad-vance we have to plan for theannual Christmas show hereat The Capitol!

Last year’s star of Cin-derella Justin Fletcher an-nounced that Aladdin wouldbe this year's pantomime, andso the journey begins to writea script, to engage the com-pany, to find a musical direc-tor, to source a set andcostumes, to design the pro-motional material.

This will be our 6th 'inhouse' Christmas production, our first being Faith Brown inCinderella, then Sonia in Jackand The Beanstalk, ToddCarty in Dick Whittington,Sarah Jane Honeywell andMark Curry in Peter Pan,Justin Fletcher in Cinderellaand now Anna Williamson inAladdin.

I have known Anna for afew years now. We have kept

in touch since I offered pantofive years ago and due to herTV commitments and othercontracts I have been unableto get her here in Horsham tillnow.

And true as her word shesaid she would play here andthis year is our year.

Anna is a great pantomimeperformer and eventually wewelcomed her to The Capitolin the summer to see whereshe will be spending herChristmas.

Anna had done her home-work in terms of asking matesin the business about TheCapitol - all came back withpositive feedback!

I had already decided that Iwould have a set for the showfrom the same suppliers aslast year, and I did get to see itin Hertfordshire before thepanto that it was being usedfor had finished. I hope thatyou will like it!

So I have a set and a story-board of what scenes, sodown to the writing -not an

easy task as I had not writtenthis one before.

But having seen many pan-tomimes over the years Iknew the structure and whatcharacters I would be includ-ing so pen to paper, well actu-ally fingers on keyboard, andstarted to write.

By the end of July I had ascript that I thought wasworth a read by some of mycolleagues, just to gauge theirreaction - a thumbs up deci-sion.

Then I met Anna in Londonand went through it with her

so she was happy what shewas going to be doing. This isnot a contractual requirementbut merely a courtesy one andwe have always treated the'top of the bill' names withthis respect.

But I need to cast the show!I had already made a few callsearlier in the year to some ofthe cast from last year’s Cin-derella pantomime.

Actors seem to love work-ing here at The Capitol and itdoes become home for 5weeks. In fact, it’s like one bigfamily. So why not have some

of the actors back? This year we see the return

of Nic and Tom who were UglySisters in Cinderella to playWidow Twankey and The Em-peror. Amanda Sim, whowaved her magic wand lastyear as The Fairy, will be spin-ning her magic as the Slave ofThe Ring, Danielle, who haschoreographed the last threeshows, agreed to return andalong with her husband Rhyswho will be playing the Chi-nese Policeman.

So what's left to do? Welllots really. Look at the lightingdesign, sound effects, propsand, oh yes, music.

I put a call out for a musicaldirector and am very fortu-nate to have found a great mu-sician, John Cornford, who isbased in East Sussex. He camefor a meeting and we wentthrough the script, sharingideas, and I gave him a day ortwo to think about whether hewanted to come to Horsham. The next day, sure enough, anemail came through saying

'Yes I'd love to work with youand play The Capitol'.

With this all in place I justneed it to come together. Intwo week’s time the set andcostumes arrive and for thenext 10 days from the 29thNovember Aladdin will be di-rected, choreographed andmusically put together.

It’s not an easy task but Ithink after these few years ofdirecting it is becoming easier. We can't wait, and I knowwhen we had the recent presscall the cast were anxious toreceive their scripts and startlearning.

All the staff are involved insome way if not selling tickets,by flying scenery, by puttingup posters to moving scenery.

So why not come along tosee the finished production? We officially open on the10thDecember and run until 3rdJanuary 2011.

It will be fun! Oh yes it will!

Take charge and sort out the stress! With the busy-ness of modern day-to-day life, running a home and raising a family, while holding down a fulltime job, it’s no surprise that ‘having no time’ and feeling completely stressed is near the top of most people’s fed-up list.

I’ve been watching a documentary on BBC TV for the past 3 weeks, ‘The Big Silence’. The programme follows the lives of five people attempting to find a better way of managing their lives, beginning with their meeting at local Worth Abbey. The programme starts by saying “There seems to be an epidemic of being busy, people’s lives are so full of busyness and noise, they are

unable to stop and listen, see things in greater clarity.”

I found the programme fascinating, seeing the challenges faced by people trying to find a way to slow down, to think about what they are doing, and why they are doing it, and to look at their quality of life. What always interests me is what happens after a retreat, once people go home and back to their day to day lives, whether they can actually maintain the new skills they have learnt, and incorporate these into their lives. More often than not they quickly revert back to their well-worn path of being constantly on the go.

I have helped many clients work on exactly

this. For lasting change to happen, people need to look at the practicalities of their lives, understanding what is important to them and designing (or redesigning!) their lives to work for them. Becoming the Ringmaster of their own circus, rather than having the circus animals running rings around them! I worked in the corporate world for 20 years before taking the bull by the horns and working out what I really wanted to do, and retraining and setting up my own business.

Often people find they have somehow ended up where they are without having given much thought to what they really want. Or perhaps they

got on the Success Ladder, and poured all their time and energy into their career, and now find that their lives are out of balance, or they want something different, more fulfilling perhaps.

If you’d like to sort your life out, get in touch with me to arrange a no-obligation chat, by calling 01403-793790 or emailing me at [email protected]. You may find yourself saying, as most of my clients do, ‘why on earth didn’t I do this sooner!?’

Welcome again to our feature where we help you to overcome the obstacles of modern life whilst retaining a sense of fun!

This week we officially start our countdown to Christmas which for many of us creates an endless tick list punctuated by frantic bursts of shopping, cooking, wrapping, decorating, writing cards, making costumes for school plays, telephoning relatives, organising social calendars... and the list goes on!

STOP!There are easier ways to

claw back time and really enjoy the lead up to the festive season without wearing your pants over your tights - oh no, sorry, that was Superman and where is he when you need him?

Superwoman wore a much more restrictive and uncomfortable costume which ensured she had a perfect cleavage at all times even when performing super human feats! Sound familiar?

That touches on a whole new list - how to create the perfect look for Christmas and we can help you with that too!

Funnily enough, I discovered a very old copy of ‘Superwoman’ by Shirley Conran last week and thought I would share a few tips with you. For those of you too young to remember, Shirley Conran espoused the philosophy that modern

woman can have it all - career, children, beautiful home, etc and her book of household management was a best seller in the seventies. The fact that she was married to the multi millionaire Sir Terence Conran, surely was the best known aid to household management!

However, she does offer some sage advice and one of my favourites is “The secret to ironing is to avoid it“ and her motto was “life is too short to stuff a mushroom”.

But at this time of year, the best advice is “Never rely on your memory. Keep a notebook in your handbag and do not let anybody get at it”. If you follow this advice, you can jot down any interesting tips and contacts from this page to help in the run up to your Christmas.

So if you have your pen ready, read the useful guide by Susannah Brady from Offload Business Resources on the organisation of time to optimise results in your Christmas preparations.

Kall Kwik also offer some vital time saving options with their Fed ex service which sends and tracks parcels worldwide and can get a gift to relatives in the USA the next day! They also offer some seasonal help with their personalised Christmas cards, menus and invitations.

For beautiful, quality and original clothing made form pure silk, wool, cotton or

bamboo, seek out “After Lily” on East Street which is an offshoot of a very successful London venture.

For the perfect gift which captures a special moment in time, discover Andrea Sarlo photography which offers vouchers for portraits and they are packaged in a delightful way with gift bags and a picture frame so offer a tangible and ready wrapped gift which will create memories forever.

The Retreat at Slinfold Golf and Country Club offer a range of lovely vouchers for their luxury spa days and treatments too. In a rapidly materialisic world, a gift of an experience can be very welcome and it only takes a phone call to arrange so saves you time too!

On a lighter note, our tip of the week to all you budding Supermen out there, is to wear your tights under your trousers as we girls have known for years, that this can really help keep the cold out and, if you want to wear your pants over them, so much the better! We need more Supermen!

Enjoy!

Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese art which explores the use of the five elements; fire, earth, water, wood and metal in a space.

As the nights get longer and darker with cold grey days, spare a thought for your elderly relatives and neighbours who may struggle more in the Winter.

Janine Lowe says ”The East area of the home is an ideal place to put a rogues gallery of older relatives and friends to help increase the energy flow to them.

Conversely we think of red as the ideal warming colour but in this area, it should be avoided and you should use blues and greens particularly if you want to renew the romantic energy in a relationship.”

This area is also associated with wood so wood carvings such as the three wise monkeys would fit in well especially as three is the number linked to the area.

Plants and greenery can also thrive and serve to increase the energy flow too.

If you would like to find out more about the power of decluttering and more useful tips, go to Janine’s blog at www.janinelowe.co.uk or contact Janine on 01903 787888.

London’s Lily blooms in East StreetHave you discovered the hidden gem in East street yet?

You may have walked past the small shop “After Lily” and been mildly intrigued, paricularly by the antique bicycles which were outside, and not realised what a treat was awaiting you inside.

The shop is a branch of a higly successful London shop which neighbours the Cath Kidston store in Fulham.

In fact “After Lily” now has

the same designer as Cath Kidston but the concept is very different. The intention is to give a palette of subtle colours, mixed with solid ba-sics to create a way to dress in your own individual style.

Caroline, the owner, spe-cialises in sourcing only high quality silk, wool, and cotton clothing which is designed to be a long term investment and she fervently believes in fair trade.

This is a very tactile place

and once you feel the softness of the bamboo and cotton tops and the lightness and fluidity of the silk dresses you will re-alise that these are garments you will want to wear again and again.

The philosphy is that the garments will last and this is backed up by a highly unu-sual but effective ‘ trading in’ policy which means that when buying a new piece, you can trade in a used piece which is valued and offset against the

new purchase. This is very eco friendly as

these are then recycled for second hand sales.

The shop also sources origi-nal French pieces of furniture and home ware so you can also create an environment which reflects your own indi-vidual essence.

So pop in and you will be made very welcome.

Kall Kwik to the rescue! In my main article, I bemoan the lack of Supermen but there are exceptions to every rule, and Martin and George at Kall Kwik in Blackhorse Way have certainly come to my rescue on many occasions!

To help you further in the festive season, you can have your own personalised Christmas card created from a photograph or design.

However I cannot miss out Zoe, who keeps them all in order, for as we all know girls, every Superman needs a Superwoman!!

Countdown to ChristmasThere’s only 6 weeks to go until Christmas and so much to do!

So to help you get it all done efficiently I have devised a fortnightly checklist, which hopefully you will find very useful and you never know, maybe you will get to the big day a little less stressed than normal!GETTING STARTED!

Ok, I admit it, I started my shopping weeks ago with the really hard ones to buy for - brothers and uncles! I saw some early shopper bargains and bagged them. Take a pencil to the family calendar now and plan when you are going to fit in everything… shopping, parties, nativities, card writing and wrapping. Set a date with your other half or a friend, or even better arrange a babysitter so you can shop alone in peace (now there’s an idea)!OVER THE NEXT TWO WEEKS YOU SHOULD…

Book your office/club party or dinner ‘do’. With so many

lovely restaurants, hotels and country clubs in the local area you will be spoilt for choice - but choose somewhere and book it now!

Order your personalised Christmas cards for both business and home. Write that card list first or revise last year’s and only order what you need.

Send out your festive season invitations now, even if you just set a date and ask if friends and family will be coming. Start discussions with ex-partners about where the kids will be and when.. and remember to include them in the process so that everyone is happy.

Book the time you want off work or find out what your staff rota is going to be. Don’t forget school plays and nativities.

Get the kids to write their Wish Lists and letters to Santa so you and your family can get the most out of your Xmas £££’s… they get something they really wanted and you

get to buy it early. Going to a Panto? Book

your tickets now or you won’t get any seats. Aladdin is on at The Capitol and Snow White is on at The Hawth.

Book train tickets for Christmas journeys to get the best discounts available.

Going overseas? Check your passports will be valid for long enough after your return dates.

And finally, as if you needed prompting.. write a list of all the people you have to buy for and set a budget. Take advantage of early bargains and start your shopping now!TOP TIP

Use a spreadsheet to track what you have bought, who for and how much - it will keep you focused on your spending and it’s really handy for identifying what’s left to buy.

Christmas Fair

www.theupmarket.co.ukSupporting The Pink Ribbon Foundation & Prostate UK

We are delighted to announce that ‘The UpMarket’ Christmas Fair will take place at Drill Hall, Horsham on 24 November 2010 from 10am until 4pm.

The UpMarket brings together selected artisans, food producers and discerning buyers in one central, convenient location. Our aim is to bring the best products to market in a fun and unique shopping experience, allowing independent producers a cost effective opportunity to come face to face with their customers.

It’s the perfect opportunity to touch, see and taste a wide range of quality, hand made and unique goods not easily found in the high street, and is the ideal way to find Christmas gifts from a range of specially invited local artisans and producers.

Items on offer will include Hampers, handcrafted jewellery and ornaments, children’s and adults clothes, Peruvian Knitwear and Cashmere, Ceramics, beautiful and unusual Christmas decorations and much more.

A licensed on-site café will be offering light lunches and refreshments to help make the whole experience relaxing and conducive to a perfect venue to shop.

We will also be raising money for two charities, “Prostate UK” and “The Pink Ribbon Foundation” through a gift-wrapping service from which all proceeds will be donated. A voluntary donation for entry to The UpMarket Christmas Fair will also be divided between the two charities.

Amanda Nimmo, Director of Energy Events who are organising the market, said, “Despite the prevalence of the internet, there’s still a huge segment of the quality goods market that the general public is unaware of. The UpMarket offers independent producers the opportunity to bring their product to market and gives the buying public a chance to purchase quality, individually made items that don’t always make it to the shelves of the high street stores.”

There are few peoplewho are unaware of thecurrent press headlines;mortgage lending is at asix month low; harsheconomic measures areahead and, despite lowinterest rates and help-ful noises from the IMFthat the British economyis looking better, few aredeceived into thinkingthat the next twelvemonths or so won’t be achallenge for most of us.

During the Autumn of2008 the letting marketwas flooded with proper-ties, frustrated sellers whobecame reluctant land-lords.

This was a benefit fortenants who unusually hada huge selection of proper-

ties to choose from whichgave them the option tonegotiate on the rent theyoffered.

We saw quite a dramaticfall in rents achieved dur-ing that time.

This certainly changedthrough 2009 and theearly part of 2010 – onceagain we had far morewaiting tenants than prop-erties and competitionwas rife pushing pricesback up again.

Many of the propertiesthat were bought to theletting market becausethey didn’t sell have nowbeen sold and thevolumeof stockhas re-duced.

As Au-tumn2010pro-gresseswe areseeing yet anotherchange. The market is

not flooded with proper-ties and we are activelyseeking new landlords. However, whilst there is asteady flow of waiting ten-ants they are looking forgood quality properties atrealistic rents.

We strongly recommendthat a landlord be flexible;if someone wants to take aproperty and they appearto be ideal but need somewhite goods supplied per-haps it is worth consider-ing this. Is it worth losinga months’ rent for the sakeof buying a fridge?

Likewise some landlordsprefer to stipu-late that theydo not acceptpets at theirproperty.Again if a ten-ant is wishingto take theproperty andhas, perhaps, one small dog

for which they are happyto lodge a higher deposit,

is it not worth consideringthis? In a tough marketflexibility can make all thedifference to the length oftime it will take to find atenant.

At Guy Leonard & Com-pany it has been part ofour service for many yearsto offer a rent guaranteeproduct to our landlords. This is part of the refer-ence process that we gothrough with any new ten-ant.

Over the last few yearsof economic turmoil wehave felt this to be of greatreassurance to ourselvesand our landlords as itprotects not only for nonpayment of rent but alsolegal expenses to gain pos-session of the property.

handy, mind!

Rural problemsAn expert has claimed youngBrits are struggling to buy homesin rural towns and villages, due toothers purchasing second homes.

There is a real problem in someparts of the UK, with people un-able to buy homes in villageswhere they grew up.

This is the view of Fiona Howie, head of planning at Campaign toProtect Rural England, who saidthe issue of second home owner-ship in such communities is pre-venting individuals from gettingon the property ladder.

"We would urge councils whereit is a problem to look at the levelof council tax that they charge.Lots only charge 15 per cent asstandard council tax to secondhome owners," she noted.

Ms Howie explained local au-thorities have the power to re-quest more cash and this shouldbe done in areas where high lev-els of second abodes are situated.

Plans to create affordable hous-ing are also required and thedwellings should be allocated tolocal people, she remarked.

Stable conversionI don't like to mention the Cword, but Christmas is com-ing, and with Christmascomes the influx of guests. But do you have anywhere tohouse them?

Great if you have an invitingguest bedroom, but not so goodif you are short on space.

It may be that your study orone of the children's rooms hasto take the strain. Howeveryour guests still need to feelwelcome. What has made yourstay with friends or family thatlittle bit more inviting?

First of all tidy up the roomyour guests are going to stay in.They don't want to be facedwith your overflowing “in tray”or the kids toys everywhere.

Add a lovely vase of flowersto brighten up the room. En-sure there are towels at yourguest’s disposal, and clean,

fresh coordinated bed linenwill add the finishing touch.

If you have a dedicated guestbedroom make sure that thereis room for guests to hangclothes. I have to confess thatmy spare bedroom very oftenbecomes the dumping groundfor all sorts of paraphernalia. But I do de-clutter prior toguests arriving.

I ensure the bed linen is

fresh and clean, and that freshtowels are left at the end of thebed ready for my guest’s ar-rival. Although the wardrobevery often has the children'sold clothes in, this is alwaysemptied before people arrive,so that they have somewhere toplace their clothes.

I like to leave an extra blan-ket out in case my guests get alittle cold and I also ensure that

the key to the bedroom win-dow is available in case theyget too hot. You can never becertain as to whether peoplewill like their bedroom hot orcold.

I also think a bedside tablewith a lamp is required. I per-sonally hate having to get up toswitch the light on or off in themiddle of the night. It can be abit embarrassing waking every-one up in the small hours whenyou have fallen over the foot ofthe bed on your way to the toi-let in the dark!.

For the finishing touches youmight like to consider some toi-letries and a glass and bottle ofwater. I also make sure thatthere are some magazines tohand for my guests to read.

Remember those smalltouches can make all the differ-ence.For further information contact

Ford's 1970 London-Mexico winning Escort ismaking a rare public appearance at the Classic CarShow in November.

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of its famousvictory, the Ford Escort, which was driven byHannu Mikkola and Gunnar Palm, will be on dis-play from 12 – 14 November at the NEC, Birming-ham, as the showpiece of a stand celebrating thegruelling 16,000-mile rally.

A world exclusive unveiling from the LondonMotor Museum of the unique “Extra TerrestrialVehicle” (ETV) took place at this year’s MPH ThePrestige & Performance Motor Show powered byShell V-Power at Earls Court, London.

The £300,000 Porsche 911Carrera RS 2.7 has beencrowned the greatest ever dri-ver’s car by Classic & SportsCar magazine.

It comes after a thrilling finalein which a pair of British builtten-grand tiddlers came within awhisker of snatching the title.

The world’s best-selling classiccar magazine asked more than100 leading lights in the classiccar world, from Sir Stirling Mossto Lord March, to list the threecars they had driven that hadgiven them the biggest thrills andthe most special memories.

Classic & Sports Car columnist,Le Mans ace and TV presenterAlain de Cadenet then assessedthe five most popular choices atthe famous Millbrook ProvingGround to make a final judge-ment of the most rewarding roadcar ever.

Though the Porsche took thetitle just ahead of the £2million,238mph, 627bhp McLaren F1and the £5million-plus pre-warAlfa Romeo 8C-2300, the afford-able Lotus Elan Sprint and theoriginal Mini Cooper ‘S’ – with allof 76bhp and a sub-100mph topspeed – were only fractionallybehind in the final showdown.

Classic & Sports Car EditorAlastair Clements said: “For methe most exciting thing about ourTop 5 was not the presence ofsome of the most exclusive andexpensive cars ever made, butthe inclusion of two that just

about any enthusiast can go outand buy today.”

James Elliott, Group Editor ofClassic & Sports Car, added: “It’sanother great result for the Mini.

“This epitome of the Swinging’60s may not have won outrightthis time around, but owners andfans can still be very proud of thesort of company it keeps.

“With three out of the Top 5 toits name and five out of the Top10, Britain can rightly revel in itsglorious motoring past.”

Bbuilt for just a year from1972, the Porsche 911 CarreraRS 2.7 Lightweight (RS stands forRenn Sport) was made in verysmall numbers (217) and couldachieve a top speed of 152mph.

Through its rarity and searingperformance, it has become the

most desirable of all the myriad911 variants and prices haverocketed in recent years.

The monocoque-bodied carwas powered by a 2687cc flat-sixengine, had 210bhp and couldreach 60mph in 6.8 seconds.

Alain de Cadenet said: “The RSis just the most perfect thing todrive and I can see why there’ssuch a frenzy for them now… It’sjust the most inspiring, timelessdriver’s car.”

Many famous names pickedtheir facourite for the competi-tion. Martin Brundle said of thePeugeot 205 GTI: “Just the rightamount of power, grip, and dri-vability in all road conditions.

“I remember travelling homeone night after an F1 test at theNürburgring and Norfolk was

supposedly closed due to snow. Not in the 205 it wasn’t, I didn’tsee another car after Ely.”

Produced in association with pri-vate bank EFG, the results of the

exclusive poll and test are pre-sented in a special 36-page sup-plement free with the December

2010 issue of Classic & Sports Car,on sale now

On Saturday evening, thingswere looking gloomy for Hor-sham Football Club.

Rooted to the bottom of theRyman Premier League, they hadplayed poorly and deservedly lost4-0 away to Lowestoft.

But a little bit of luck - in theshape of a goalkeeping error onTuesday night - could haveturned the season around for theHornets. At worst, it’s put themout of the bottom two for the firsttime in a month.

Two late goals earned Horshama crucial victory at Tooting onTuesday evening to move themout of the bottom two for the firsttime in a month.

After an uninspiring first half itwas the hosts who took the leadwhen Tyrone Sealey convertedBarry Stevens' 63rd minute passand it looked as though Horshamwere set to fall to their 9th defeatof the season until Gary Charmancrashed home a thumping headeras the match entered injury time.

Anthony Storey was then dis-missed after picking up his sec-

ond caution of the night but theHornets pushed forward andwere rewarded when Tooting'keeper Jamie Butler punched theball into his own net to hand thevisitors all three points.

On Saturday afternoon, Hor-sham fell to a 4-0 defeat at Low-estoft Town.

Gary Charman spurned a cou-ple of early chances to give theHornets the lead but two goals in5 minutes, from Danny Bloom-field and Adrian Forbes, put thehosts in the driving seat and theyadded another goal before half-time when Horsham failed to dealwith a cross and Joe Francis net-ted at the far post.

The visitors made a disastrousstart to the second half, fallingfurther behind just 30 secondsafter the restart when StuartAinsley shrugged off several chal-lenges to score.

U18s captain Joss Knowlescame on for his first team debut, replacing Ryan Woodford, butBloomfield almost made it 5when his shot hit the post.

Horsham Sparrows GirlsU12’s recorded a 3-0 victoryover table topping Little-hampton Devils thanks to asuperb hat trick from MiaCadette.

The result meant Sparrowsovertook their rivals at the topof the Sussex County GirlsMini-Soccer league.

Sparrows started thestrongest, with Cadette get-ting her first chance early inthe half when a low cornerreached her in the box, only abobble taking it away from herand saving Littlehampton. Theaway side then had an oppor-tunity to take the lead whenEleanor Kill squared the ballfor Skye Austin whose shotnarrowly missed the goal.

Sparrows’ impressive EmilyBurnie was almost sentthrough to shoot at AbigailBraim in the Littlehamptongoal only for Megan Fullard tostop that attack. She single-handedly prevented a furtherseries of Sparrows pressureby Léah Cadette from result-ing in a goal for the hometeam.

Molly Beadle then set Léahpast the defence only for Lit-tlehampton captain EllenGrant to save the day for herside.

Play was then stopped as aloose ball hit a Sparrows de-fender in the face who wasforced to leave the pitch with anose bleed, but soon after thebreak the home team strucktheir first goal.

Léah was the orchestrator, taking the ball from her ownbox all the way to the opposi-

tion penalty area, and aftersuccessive saves from Braim, her sister Mia finally found thecorner of the net.

Sparrows continued topress but Littlehampton heldthem to the one goal leadgoing into half time. Substi-tute Sarah Cannons had thenext chance for Sparrows afterthe break only for Skye Austinwho was tracking back tothwart the attempt on goal.

However, Sparrows’ pres-sure soon paid off, the secondof two corners from Léah wasallowed to run to Mia whopoked the ball past Braim todouble the lead.

Littlehampton gained pos-session after the goal and Skyeplayed in Stacie Holmes to testBethany Beadle in the Spar-rows goal, who smartly turnedthe shot around the post.

But it didn’t last, and Spar-rows retrieved the ball andmounted succeeding attacks, with Mia trying desperately toget her hat trick.

Her efforts seemed in vain, however with only a few min-utes to go, the ball fell to herfrom another of her sister’scorners and she scooped theball past Braim to joyous ap-plause from the Sparrows sup-port. Littlehampton had notime to react and Sparrowsrecorded their sixth win of theseason to race to the top of theleague.

Under 11 Heron Way CupChesworth Rovers Youth losttheir second encounter withDorking Saints 6-2 at ForestSchool on Saturday, writes

Freddie Underwood.Chesworth started the bet-

ter side with the majority ofpossession and territory, butwere caught on the counter bya neat one on one finish.

Rovers equalised when JakeHull poked the ball into theroof of the net in a goalmouthscramble.

Dorking showed why theybeat Chesworth in the earlierleague encounter with somestrong attacking play resultingin three more goals.

James Christer had thechance to pull one back fromthe spot, but his effort was

Sparrows’ star Cadette

saved. However, Jake Hull gothold of the rebound at anangle and his shot waspushed into the path of sub-stitute Freddie Underwoodwho scored his first goal forthe club.

Keeper Joe Cross deniedDorking on several occasionsbut the Saints did add twomore goals, making it 6-2.

Under 13s SC Youth CupHorsham Youth Under 13sdominated their County Cupround three match at ThreeBridges FC, running out 9-0winners.

Horsham ‘keeper Joe Mossmade a good early save, be-fore Finn Bigg beat his manand put in a great cross to NikBristow to open the scoring.

Bristow calmly netted hissecond after only 6 minutes, then combined with JamesTilley, with Tilley firing inwith a left foot drive. Bris-tow’s hat-trick then followedfollowing another Bigg cross.

In the 21st minute EddieDavies drove forward, findingthe net with a super strike inthe far corner. Horsham’ssixth followed when Bigglatched onto a long throughball and the Three Bridges‘keeper rushed out of his areausing his head to briefly clear, but only as far as Jack Reeveswho drove his shot low andhard into the net.

The fresh legs of Dan Cus-din and George Matthewswere linking well but it wasJack Reeves who set up Bris-tow and his looped flick foundHugo Cowan who ran in tohead home. A lovely curlingfree kick to the far post fromReeves fell invitingly for Bris-tow to take his fourth, beforeCusdin fired another.

Under 13s Girls FootballHorsham Sparrows Girls ver-sus Worthing Town Girlsproved an evenly matched en-counter on Sunday morning.

The final score was 1–1,with Lucy Derham’s 30 yardshot that chipped the high-light for Sparrows.

Under 14 Arun & Chichester YL

Horsham were not at theirbest, but managed to comeaway from Worthing Unitedwith a win.

After just two minutes RossWilliams drove home a rightfoot shot after an AndrewRoberts cross was allowed totravel a long way.

It was 2-0 after five min-utes, a long throw from Jor-dan Walser was not dealtwith and Roberts sent a loop-ing header over the stranded‘keeper.

The young Hornets thenseemed to go to sleep andWorthing created severalchances before pulling a goalback. The visitors finally ex-tended there lead on the halfhour mark when a Zack Con-niff-Broome free kick fromthe right hand side of thepenalty area found an un-marked Walser, who comfort-ably headed home.

Conniff-Broome struck apenalty wide in a scrappy sec-ond half, but it ended wellwhen a delightful through ballby Roberts found CallumNash who chipped in.

Under 14s friendlyA friendly match turned into acompetitive clash whenBroadbridge Heath encoun-tered the Lower BeedingLions who were not going tobe tamed, writes Sam Nor-gate.

A few minutes into thegame, Callum Nash scored theopening goal, but Heathequalised 20 minutes later.

A battling second half per-formance was the only con-solation for BroadbridgeHeath Reserves as they wentdown 5-2 against Storring-ton Reserves.

The Swans pulled out a firstclass performance, brimmingwith confidence, to leave theBears nursing a sore head atthe wrong end of the ReserveSection-West table.

With only one place andpoint separating the teams be-fore kick off, I expected Heathto come out fighting, markingtheir territory from the off. But, it was the away side, showing exceptional intensityand desire, which took thegame by the scruff as theBears struggled to find theirrace pace.

The Heath couldn’t evenmark Storrington’s shadowsas the away side picked theirway through a static midfieldwith ease. And it was no sur-prise when the Swan’s No. 10,Neil Richardson, started thescoring on 10 minutes; on therun towards the near post, heapplied the deftest of touchesto a cross from the right, flick-ing the ball behind his frontleg and into the far corner fora peach of an opener.

With the Swan’s wide-boywhizz kids, Dan Cobb and JakeCockerton, terrorising theiropposing full-backs, danger-ous crosses flew across theHeath box with disturbingregularity, but it was a mis-placed pass at the back that

led to Storrington’s second.Kristian Bridle interceptedand ran through to chip theKeeper from 18 yards to givethe Swans a 2-0 lead.

First half damage not overfor the Bears, Jake Cockerton’sStinging shot was too hot forKeeper, Gary Brown, to handleas Dan Cobb headed into anempty net to make it 3 up forStorrington as the whistleblew for the break.

Another from Neil Richard-son made it 4-0 before theBears finally awoke from theirhibernation. Damien Franciseventually got the home sideoff the mark, heading in froma corner. And at 4-1, Heathhad opened a chink in thedoor, but it was slammed shutmoments later when TomCarter drove in No. 5, a crack-ing low drive past a despair-ing Gary Brown in the Heathgoal.

The Bears plugged awayvaliantly, showing some steelto try and get back on levelterms. Nathan Sleat whippedin several dangerous crossesfrom the left, and the midfieldat least fronted up for the sec-ond half battle. They got theirsmall reward when Paul Gal-lagher fired in at the death tomake the score-line almost re-spectable at 5-2.

Manager, Mick Robinson, grasped on to the Bear’ssweeter smelling phase of thegame afterwards explaining,‘the first half was forgettable, but, all credit to the boys for

coming out fighting to drawthe second half. That’s the de-termination I will expect forour next game.’

Unsurprisingly, a satisfiedSwan’s Supremo, James Baker, was very positive in his team’sappraisal saying, ‘It was a greatteam performance and we con-tinue to show our ruthlessnessin front of goal- that’s 16 goalsin 3 games.’

Jumping 2 places on theback of this result, and with agoal record like that, it’s surelyonly a matter of time beforethe Swan’s begin a graciousclimb up the league. The Bearsmust start bulking up or they’ll

be looking at a harsh winter.

Premier League Poor finishing was again theproblem as Southwater lost 2-0 at Chichester Uni in a gamethey should have got a pointfrom.

Chi Uni were the better sidein the first half and led 1-0 atthe break. Southwater im-proved in the second half andput the home side defenceunder constant pressure butcouldn’t find an equaliser.

Toby Lovett went closestforcing the home keeper intoa fine save, before the visitorsconceded a late second.

Division 2 NorthAFC Roffey continued their re-cent good form with anotherwin, this time a 4-2 victory atRudgwick. They took the lead against therun of play Olly Smith puttingin Craig Young who finishedwell. Gavin Fowler supplied agood cross for Russ Harwoodto fire home from close range, before Harwood again addedto his tally after a corner fromDan Lawrence was convertedwith a nice right foot finish.

Dan Lawrence added thefourth with a fine jinxing runand strike from the edge ofthe area.

Manager Jonny Lawrencecommented: “There wouldhave been fireworks if we hadlost that game!”

Sussex Junior CupDespite their best perform-ance of the season Horsham

Crusaders suffered their firstdefeat of the season whenthey were beaten 2-1 in thesecond round of the SussexJunior Cup to White hart Rev-olution on Saturday.

An under strength Cru-saders side showed playedwith passion, pace and skilland were extremely unluckyto bow out of the competition. In the first half both AdamParsons and James Callaby hitthe crossbar and Chris Atkin-son, Matt Mason and AliHughes went close.

It was completely againstthe run of play that WhiteHart Revolution took the leadwhen a long range shot beatstand-in keeper Jack Main-stone.

In the second half Cru-saders continued to pour for-ward and a delightful ChrisAtkinson free kick found thehead of James Callaby andCrusaders were level. WithDom Giacomelli, Ryan Taylor,George Lewis and Matt Masonsolid at the back, it was ashock when they retook thelead late in the second half.

Mid Sussex Junior CupNick Baker was the hero forSouthwater grabbing himselfa hat-trick as Southwatercame from behind to booktheir place in the next roundof the Mid Sussex Junior Cup.

Forest started the better ofthe 2 sides and were 2-0 upbefore the visitors came tolife. Baker grabbed a quickfirebrace just before half time toensure the sides went in level

at the break. Southwater werethe better side in the secondhalf and took the lead justafter the hour when JamesAmankwaa reacted quickestin a goalmouth scramble tohammer the ball into the bot-tom corner.

Southwater made sure ofthe win when Chris Leppard`scross found Baker, and hisdiving header flew past the‘keeper to complete an im-pressive hat-trick.

Sussex County WomenHorsham Sparrows Ladies puton a brave and resolute per-formance before eventuallysuccumbing to East Prestonand Littlehampton Town.

With virtually the last kickof the first half a miss-hitcross sailed over the Spar-rows keeper to put East Pre-ston and Littlehampton Townahead at the break.

Sparrows continued topress with Carys Dunn surg-ing forward and Holly BethDazely and Liana Brooksbankbattling in midfield. ElizabethSharpe and Georgia Malinswere solid in the heart of de-fence and Lucy Sharpe linkedup well with Liz Ogden andPlayer of the Match, HannahWright.

However as Sparrowsstarted to tire, East Prestonand Littlehampton snatched asecond to run out 2-0 win-ners.

Very accurate bowling from Barns Green, keptthe Pulborough batsmen in check in week 1 ofthe Identilam Colts Cricket League on Sunday.

Although Jordan Dear (17) and Oli Heasman(12) hung on until the fifth over, wickets beganto fall as the batsmen began to take risks.

Alex Walker bowled his two overs for amiserly 4 runs, and Pulborough closed on 60-3. In reply, James Powell,26* & Ben Hill, 20*,knocked off the required runs in the seventhover.

Some aggressive fast, straight bowling fromLouis Lewis gave Steyning early hope againstBarns Green, but sensible batting from TomHaynes, 26*, and James Powell, 20*, ensuredBarns Green posted a formidable 105-4.

The situation was even worse as Steyning’sbatsmen subsided to 35-5, but last man, 9-yearold Chris Barnett, had other ideas, and scored43, to give Steyning another bonus point.

Some suicidal running between the wicketsgifted Pulborough early wickets against Steyn-ing, but they were unable to capitalise, andthey in turn gave away too many Wides/NoBalls, as Steyning’s Oli Collins staged yet an-other rearguard action with 30, to ensureSteyning had a reasonable total to bowl at.

Pulborough made a poor start, slumping to18-3 in the second over, before Oli Heas-man,38*, and Charlie Davies 17, began to tiltthe balance back to Pulborough, but afterCharlie was out, Oli was left with too much todo.
