Page 11: The Release Strategy of MySAP Components

11

With the introduction of mySAP.com comes a new deliverystrategy that differs from SAP's previous strategy of deliveringindividual products. As a result, SAP has defined an overalldelivery strategy for the mySAP.com solutions in addition to theexisting component delivery strategy. The many different com-ponents that form the mySAP.com solutions will continue tokeep their existing release strategy, which has been proven reli-able since 1997.

DELIVERY STRATEGY IN GENERAL

mySAP.com is a comprehensive e-business platform thatconsists of many different harmonized and integrated compo-nents and which provides industry-specific add-ons. The deliv-ery strategy is based on the following principles:

• The components contained in mySAP.com have their own, separate release states. SAP will offer separate release upgradesand separate Support Packages to maintain the components.

• SAP will always give its customers access to the current, gen-erally available releases of the mySAP.com components. Theindividual mySAP.com components are subject to the rules ofthe delivery strategy that previously applied to componentslike SAP R/3 and which are still valid. Customers who alreadyuse mySAP.com components can obtain the mySAP.comcomponents individually as an initial installation or as anupgrade.

• SAP will continue to maintain individual mySAP.com compo-nents as before, and you can upgrade them individually.

• Additional, industry-specific enhancements - that is, industry-specific components - enhance the available, generic businessprocesses with industry-specific business processes. You decidewhich industry-specific enhancements you want to use.

• Another major feature of mySAP.com is its support for thegreatest possible number of technical platforms (operatingsystems, databases, and hardware) for all components, as wellas comprehensive language and country support.

SAP offers a smooth transition to the mySAP.com e-businessplatform from SAP R/3 3.1I and later releases (currently SAP R/34.0B, 4.5B, 4.6B, and 4.6C). This enables you to immediately startimplementing mySAP.com solutions. The integration of

mySAP.com with SAP R/3 3.1I and later releases lets you imme-diately take advantage of the important mySAP.com functions. The section "Transition to mySAP.com" contains moreinformation on this topic.

DELIVERY STRATEGY FOR INDIVIDUAL mySAP.com

COMPONENTS

The delivery strategy for the mySAP.com components describesthe rules for delivering the individual components. You canobtain the entire mySAP.com e-business platform or one ormore of the mySAP.com cross-industry solutions. If you alreadyuse mySAP.com components, you can obtain the most recentreleases of these components as an upgrade, and you can obtainadditional components as an initial installation. The deliverystrategy involves several delivery categories and times.

Delivery Categories

Controlled Availability Release

New functions are generally delivered in a controlled availability(CA) release first. A CA release is intended for a limited numberof customers and is only shipped on request. A CA release canbe used for production operation provided that SAP gives itsexpressed permission. Production operation with a CA releasemay be subject to certain conditions. One condition applies inall cases: The CA release must be upgraded to the next availablegeneral availability (GA) release. In contrast to a GA release, aCA release is usually subject to restrictions on the maintenanceduration, number of supported platforms (operating system, database, and hardware), training, IDES, and the number ofavailable languages.

General Availability Release

A general availability (GA) release is available to all customersfor production operation. A GA release offers the completeproduct with all the planned languages, platforms, upgradeoptions, and new installations. GA releases are generally shippedas part of the mySAP.com e-business platform. SAP always declares one GA release of a mySAP.com componentas a default release. This term refers to the release that isshipped as the standard release unless otherwise specified.

OVERVIEW OF SAP'SDELIVERY STRATEGY

Page 12: The Release Strategy of MySAP Components

Delivery Times

A release is usually introduced to market in several phases. Theshipment process for each delivery category normally beginswith a first customer shipment (FCS). To upgrade to the latestrelease under real business conditions on a customer's test sys-tem, SAP initially ships the software release to a limited numberof customers. SAP's strategy is to include as many operatingsystem and database system combinations (platforms) as possi-ble in the first customer shipment.

Delivery Times

Special licensing conditions apply during the FCS phase. Forexample, the system must not be used for production operationor for any purpose other than testing.

After four to six weeks, after receiving feedback from customersand SAP consultants, the FCS phase ends, and SupportPackages are used to transform the system to its final deliverystatus (CA or GA release). The FCS upgrade itself is supportedby SAP and coordinated by an SAP Basis consultant.

A CA release is then awarded controlled availability status, a GArelease general availability status.A software release with controlled availability status can bedelivered to any customer on request. At this point, you canprepare the release for production operation, and, with priorapproval from SAP, can even go live with it.

SAP awards general availability status to a release if customerscan go live with it without any restrictions.

The Release Sequence

In general, ervery CA release is followed by a GA release. Youmay upgrade to the next CA release from all GA releases thatare still in maintenance when the CA release ships.

SAP generally offers upgrades from a CA release to the next GArelease. Upgrades from a CA release to the next GA releasemust be performed during the maintenance interval of that CArelease (usually 12 months). SAP does not support upgradesfrom one CA release to the next. The only exception is if severalCA releases succeed each other without a GA release beingoffered. In this case, SAP supports upgrades between CA releas-es.

SAP offers upgrades to a GA release from all GA releases still inmaintenance and from the CA release immediately precedingit. Depending on technological developments, an upgradebetween two far-apart releases may have to be carried out inseveral steps.

It is possible to switch from a GA release to any CA or GArelease that is in maintenance when the GA release is initiallyshipped.

12

Page 13: The Release Strategy of MySAP Components

* If several CA releases succeed each other without a GA release being offered, anupgrade between CA releases will be supported.

The Release Sequence

Duration and Scope of Software Maintenance

As part of its delivery strategy, SAP announces the plannedperiod and scope of maintenance for a release as soon as it isannounced. These values are based on the delivery category ofthe release.

SAP only provides limited maintenance for CA releases - eitherup to three months after shipment of the subsequent GArelease or usually at least a year.

Support Packages for CA releases always provide SAP Notes witha very high priority. However, SAP does not supply SupportPackage Collections or SAP R/3 HR Support Packages (for SAPHR) for CA releases.

No restrictions apply to GA release maintenance. The mainte-nance interval is currently at least three years from the initialdelivery date of the component (for example, for SAP R/3 or

SAP BW). If the release is used as an add-on for a release ofanother component, this will not affect the maintenance inter-val of the underlying release.

SAP provides corrections, such as SAP Notes and legal changes, for the entire maintenance period. Examples includecorrections to SAP HR or euro functions.

The discontinuation of maintenance for a release has severalconsequences:• SAP delivers no additional Support Packages for this release.• Customer problems will be solved by referring customers to

SAP Notes or to more recent releases in which the problem issolved.

• Problems that SAP is not yet aware of can be solved by an SAPconsultant or an SAP developer in customer projects subjectto a consulting fee.

SAP Local Support continues to receive all inquiries, and iteither processes them or forwards them to higher support lev-els up to SAP's development departments. Please refer to SAPNote 52505 for more information.

You can obtain information on corrections for legal changesafter the maintenance period from your SAP subsidiary or SAPpartners. Corrections to the SAP software due to the end ofmaintenance of an operating system or database version are notprovided (or only in an extremely limited manner).

TRANSITION TO mySAP.com

SAP offers a smooth transition to the mySAP.com e-businessplatform from SAP R/3 3.1I and later releases (currently, SAPR/3 4.0B, 4.5B, 4.6B, and 4.6C). This lets you take advantage ofthe important mySAP.com functions immediately.

To make the transition to mySAP.com even easier, SAP hasextended maintenance for SAP R/3 3.1I, 4.0B, 4.5B, and 4.6B toAugust 2003. This extension is fully comprehensive. The onlyexception is maintenance for country-specific components inSAP HR, which will be continued for SAP R/3 3.1I and 4.0B forthe following countries only: Austria, France, Germany, Japan

13

Page 14: The Release Strategy of MySAP Components

SAP R/3

SAP R/3 and mySAP.com

mySAP.com contains SAP R/3. Therefore, no separate technicalconversion is required to switch from existing SAP R/3 releasesto mySAP.com.

SAP R/3 3.0

Maintenance for SAP R/3 3.0D ended on March 31, 2000.Maintenance for SAP R/3 3.0F ended on September 30, 2000.

SAP R/3 3.1

SAP R/3 3.1 integrated many Internet Application Components(IACs) for the first time. SAP R/3 3.1 also features a large num-ber of business process-oriented interfaces (BusinessApplication Programming Interfaces or BAPIs) for businessapplications, designed for developers and third-party vendors.

SAP R/3 3.1H was made generally available for the first time inSeptember 1997. Maintenance for SAP R/3 3.1H was discontin-ued on October 31, 2000, although the maintenance period hasbeen extended for SAP Oil & Gas users. (Refer to the "mySAPOil & Gas" section for more information.)

SAP R/3 3.1I has been available to all customers since June 1998.As a "euro release," it contains functions to simplify thehandling of business processes during the dual-currency phaseand to satisfy legal requirements. It also includes programs forconverting local currencies to the euro. (For additional infor-mation, see SAP Note 102572 and the "SAP Systems andEuropean Monetary Union" section of this document).

SAP has extended maintenance for SAP R/3 3.1I to August 31,2003. Please note that maintenance of the SAP HR country ver-sions will be continued until August 2003 for the followingcountries only: the U.S., Germany, Switzerland, Austria, UnitedKingdom, France, South Africa, and Spain. SAP will discontin-ue maintenance of all other country versions on October 31,2001. More information on maintenance can be found in SAPNote 303275 and for special circumstances in Central Europeancountries in SAP Note 318758. In most cases, SAP extends main-tenance of industry solutions along with maintenance of theunderlying releases of SAP R/3.

(4.0B only), South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, the UnitedKingdom, and the U.S. For all other countries, maintenance ofcountry-specific components in SAP HR ends, as previouslyannounced, October 31, 2001 (SAP R/3 3.1I) and June 30, 2001(SAP R/3 4.0B) respectively. More information on maintenancecan be found in SAP Note 303275 and on special conditions forCentral European countries in SAP Note 318758. In most cases, maintenance of industry solutions is extended along withmaintenance of the underlying SAP R/3 releases.

If you run an SAP R/3 release below 3.1I, you must upgrade atleast to 3.1I before being able to utilize mySAP.com functions.Additional information is available in the section entitled "SAPR/3." The release that you decide to use depends on your spe-cific goals and needs. You should always consider the followingpoints:

• In comparison to SAP R/3 3.1I, SAP R/3 4.6C offers a farbroader functional scope and a longer maintenance period.

• The cost of an upgrade to SAP R/3 3.1I will, as a rule, amountto only a small fraction of the original investment in SAP R/3.The cost of an upgrade to SAP R/3 4.6B or 4.6C will typicallybe higher.

• Some functional restrictions apply when operating SAP APO,SAP BW, SAP BBP, Enterprise Buyer Professional Edition, SAPCFM, SAP CRM, SAP KW, SAP SEM, and SAP Workplace withSAP R/3 3.1I and 4.0B. If these restrictions are accepted, youcan integrate these components with SAP R/3 3.1I and 4.0B byimplementing plug-ins.

• The new interactive design and the better mySAP Workplaceintegration in SAP R/3 4.6C offer substantial advantages - usertraining requirements decrease, the time needed to completetasks is reduced, and user satisfaction increases.

SAP Campus Management (SAP CM) is based on a design thatguarantees maximum flexibility. Modern technologies likeworkflow, the Internet, and intranets were included from thestart, and SAP will continually enhance SAP CM by introduc-ing new applications like electronic kiosks, smart cards, self-service tools, access control, and payment methods. SAPCampus Management is an add-on for SAP R/3. As a result, therestrictions of the underlying release of SAP R/3 apply to theuse of databases, platforms, and additional components.

Integration

SAP CM can be operated together with SAP Human ResourcesPublic Sector (SAP HR-PS) 4.62. It does not support concurrentoperation with SAP Public Sector Funds Management (SAP IS-PS-FM). SAP CM uses parts of SAP Public Sector Tax andRevenue Accounting (SAP IS-PS-CA) for student accounting.

The mySAP Workplace supports all current releases of SAP CM.

Release Planning and Maintenance Strategy of SAP CM

Up-to-date maintenance information is available in SAP Note179990. SAP CM is currently being shipped to pilot customers.SAP is rapidly providing developments to the pilot customers, which is why only brief maintenance periods are offered.

You must use the current maintenance level for effective sup-port. Patches for SAP CM are available exclusively in SAPNet -SAP R/3 Frontend.

ment and process management• SAP Tax and Revenue Management to establish an online

payment system and a citizen account• SAP KW for Web content management and to make available

the knowledge required for the internal processing of appli-cations

mySAP Public Sector consists of SAP R/3 components, plus theindustry-specific component SAP Public Sector (SAP IS-PS),which is an add-on to SAP R/3. SAP IS-PS includes the compo-nents SAP IS-PS Funds Management (SAP IS-PS-FM), SAP IS-PSTax and Revenue Management (SAP IS-PS-CA), and SAP HR-PS. SAP IS-PS-CA offers an integrated public revenue collectionand information with efficient, integrated processing of massnumbers of receivables and payments and the Web-enabled citi-zen and business accounts. Country versions of SAP HR-PS areincluded in the standard delivery (except for the U.S., the U.K.,France, Austria, and Australia). SAP Funds and PositionManagement (SAP HR-FPM) has also been part of the standarddelivery since SAP R/3 4.6.

SAP IS-PS is an add-on to SAP R/3. As a result, the restrictionsof the underlying release of SAP R/3 apply to the use of databas-es, platforms, and additional components.

Integration

When integrating SAP IS-PS with other mySAP.comcomponents, the following points should be considered:

• SAP IS-PS-FM with SAP HR-PS: A common installation ispossible with SAP IS-PS-FM 4.61 or later and SAP HR-PS 4.61or later.

• SAP IS-PS-CA with SAP IS-PS-FM: A common installation isnot currently possible, but ALE scenarios are planned.

• SAP IS-PS-CA with SAP HR-PS: The common installation willbe possible as soon as SAP HR-PS 4.62 becomes available.

• SAP IS-PS and SAP BW: OLAP reporting can be supplementedwith reporting in SAP BW starting with SAP BW 2.0B and SAPIS-PS 4.61. The standard FI-FM component already suppliesthis function from SAP R/3 4.5B and SAP BW 2.0A onwards.

• SAP Workplace supports all current releases of SAP IS-PS.Composite roles for SAP IS-PS, SAP HR-PS, and SAP CampusManagement have been supplied since SAP Workplace 2.0.

PLUG-INS

SAP R/3 Plug-Ins

SAP R/3 Plug-Ins are interfaces which enable the exchange ofdata between one or several SAP R/3 systems and othermySAP.com components. The SAP R/3 Plug-Ins supply themySAP.com components with transaction data and master datain real time. They also make it possible to use mySAP.comapplication components like SAP APO or SAP CRM togetherwith certain mySAP.com industry-specific components. AllmySAP.com industry-specific components based on SAP R/34.6B or higher SAP R/3 releases require SAP R/3 Plug-Ins.

SAP R/3 Plug-Ins are add-ons to SAP R/3.

Availability

SAP R/3 Plug-Ins are shipped with mySAP.com applicationcomponents (SAP APO, SAP BW, SAP BBP, EBP, SAP CRM, andSAP SEM) as well as with mySAP.com industry-specific compo-nents based on SAP R/3 4.6B or higher SAP R/3 releases.Customers can order the most recent SAP R/3 Plug-In releasesfree of charge or download them from the SAP ServiceMarketplace.

Versions of the SAP R/3 Plug-In

For SAP R/3 3.1I up to 4.5B, there are two versions of each SAPR/3 Plug-In release, a PI version and a PI-A version. For SAP R/34.6B and 4.6C, only PI is available.

PI-A is a subset of PI and contains interfaces for SAP BW andSAP BBP 1.0B. For SAP R/3 3.1I, a PI-A version also supports SAPBBP 2.0B and Enterprise Buyer 2.0, as well as SAP CRM InternetSales. The PI version supports SAP BW, SAP BBP/EnterpriseBuyer, SAP APO, SAP CRM, and SAP SEM.

For SAP R/3 3.1I, the PI versions of the SAP R/3 Plug-In releasesare modifying, which means that they modify SAP R/3 standardobjects, and therefore require Conflict Resolution Transports(CRTs) for their installation. For SAP R/3 4.0B to 4.6C, the PIversions of the SAP R/3 Plug-Ins are non-modifying.

The PI-A versions of the SAP R/3 Plug-In releases are generallynon-modifying.

– PI version is modifying for SAP R/3 3.1I and must beinstalled with the corresponding CRT.

Upgrade

SAP R/3 Plug-Ins are downward compatible with older SAP R/3Plug-In releases as well as with older releases of mySAP.comcomponents, provided these components are still inmaintenance. • When upgrading, no SAP R/3 Plug-In release may be missed

out. • It is always possible to change from a PI-A version to a PI ver-

sion. The opposite path is not supported. • After an upgrade of SAP R/3, the SAP R/3 Plug-In must be

reinstalled by applying the SAP R/3 Plug-In Supplement CDwhich is provided for all SAP R/3 Plug-In releases.

Maintenance

As a rule, a given SAP R/3 Plug-In release (for example, PI 2000.1)is maintained via SAP R/3 Plug-In Support Packages and CRTsas well as SAP Notes until the next SAP R/3 Plug-In release (inthis example, PI 2000.2) becomes available. After the new releasehas become available, the previous release is maintained via SAPNotes. After the delivery of yet another new release (in thisexample, PI 2001.1), maintenance is discontinued. Customers should always install the latest SAP R/3 Plug-Inrelease.

WP-PI contains only new functions and can be imported inde-pendently of all Support Packages because of its nonmodifyingnature.

SAP WEB APPLICATION SERVER

SAP Web Application Server (SAP Web AS) provides the techno-logical foundation for all other mySAP.com components. In asense, SAP Web Application Server is the "operating system" ofmySAP.com. Until SAP R/3 4.6D, SAP Web Application Serverwas named SAP Basis.

In the past, SAP Basis was used and shipped exclusively as anintegral part of SAP R/3. This was also reflected by the fact thatSAP Basis and SAP R/3 had identical release names and sharedSupport Packages.

With the introduction of mySAP.com, SAP now offers multiplecomponents that build on SAP Web Application Server. As aresult, there is no tight naming relation between SAP WebApplication Server and SAP R/3 any more.

Features of SAP Web Application Server

SAP Web Application Server provides a platform for quicklydeveloping and deploying dynamic and collaborative Webapplications or other thin-client applications (WAP, PDA, and soon) and includes all proven SAP programming models andtechnologies. With SAP Web Application Server, SAP nativelysupports open Internet standards, including such protocols asHTTP, HTTPS, and SMTP, as well as Internet documentstandards like HTML and XML.

Open integration capabilities provide access to existing SAP andnon-SAP applications. All integration facilities supported bySAP are available with SAP Web Application Server. The JavaConnector or the DCOM Connector give ABAP applicationsaccess to Java or .NET components and vice versa. In addition, the Internet Communication Framework (ICF) of SAP Web ASenables ABAP-written programs to process and distribute HTTP

requests directly. As a consequence, SAP Web ApplicationServer can serve both as an HTTP server and client. It serves asan HTTP server for bringing applications to the user via a Webbrowser either directly or via a standard Web server. It serves asan HTTP client to access other Web applications for collectinginformation and data. To complete Web connectivity, SAP WebAS provides full support for sending and receiving e-mails viaSMTP.

SAP Web AS is marketed and sold by SAP as an independentproduct. It is also shipped with all mySAP.com componentsthat use it.

For more information, review the fact sheet "SAP WebApplication Server" (Material Number 50040881).

SAP Web Application Server Releases

An SAP R/3 release may - but does not necessarily - use a givenSAP Web AS release. For example, SAP Basis 4.6D is used bymySAP.com components like SAP Workplace, SAP BW, and SAPCRM, but not by SAP R/3.

For information on which SAP Web AS release is used by a spe-cific mySAP.com component, please refer to the section for therespective component.

Maintenance Strategy

The maintenance period of a given SAP Web AS release followsthe maintenance period defined for the mySAP.comcomponent releases that build upon this release. Because differ-ent mySAP.com components use SAP Web AS, SAP Web AS andSAP Basis have had their own Support Packages from SAP Basis4.6A onward. These Support Packages can be installed in addi-tion to the Support Packages of the mySAP.com componentsthemselves.

SAP INTERNET TRANSACTION SERVER

SAP Internet Transaction Server (SAP ITS) is a tool thatenhances the three-tiered SAP architecture for Internet use. Itcombines existing Internet technology with SAP technologyand provides reliable access to SAP functions from the Internetor intranets.

41

Page 42: The Release Strategy of MySAP Components

SAP ITS can handle complementary Web technologies to accessdata from SAP R/3: • SAP GUI for HTML (from SAP ITS 4.6B): SAP transaction

screens are dynamically converted to HTML pages • Web transactions: SAP transactions that can be called from an

HTML page (template-based model) • Web remote function call (RFC): SAP R/3 function module

that can be called from an HTML page• Web reporting: Mechanism for linking to SAP reports and

pregenerated lists from an HTML page. Links to the Webreporting browser, which displays SAP R/3 report trees, arealso possible. Web reporting is implemented as a special-caseWeb RFC.

• ITS flow logic (from SAP ITS 4.6C): Events, statuses, andmodes used to model the dialog logic of a Web application in“flow files” on SAP ITS. SAP R/3 data is accessed via BAPI orRFC. Access to external data providers is also possible.

SAP ITS is marketed and sold by SAP together with theSAP@Web Studio and a package of Internet ApplicationComponents (IACs). It is currently shipped with all of the pri-mary mySAP.com components.

SAP ITS and mySAP.com

SAP ITS is a mySAP Technology component. SAP ITSrepresents the basic technology of the mySAP Workplace mid-dleware, together with a Web server and the workplace engine. It mainly generates HTML pages and enables end users to inter-act with different SAP systems using a Web browser. SAP ITSalso serves as the server component for the SAP GUI for HTML.

Overview of SAP ITS Releases

SAP ITS is downward compatible, which means that a givenSAP ITS release (like 4.6D) can be used with an older SAP R/3release (like 4.0B).

Maintenance Strategy

SAP recommends that you always use the most current SAPITS release. Since January 2001, support for SAP ITS has beenlimited to release 4.6D.

New releases of SAP ITS are available on sapserv servers. Forinformation on the availability of patches, please refer to SAPNotes 197746 and 383549.

SAP GUI

Generally, the latest release of the SAP GUI software (such asSAP GUI 4.6D) can be used with all previous SAP R/3 releases(such as 4.0B). As a result, older SAP systems can also benefitfrom the features that are only available in the newer SAP GUIreleases - for example, the look and feel of EnjoySAP and sup-port for Windows 2000.

The benefit of this downward compatibility is that you can sim-ply install a new SAP GUI release instead of patching an oldone. The SAP GUI maintenance strategy takes advantage of thisfeature. In many problem situations, the recommendation is toinstall a new SAP GUI release, because patches cannot always beprovided for older SAP GUI releases even if SAP still maintainsthe SAP R/3 System with the same release number.

The SAP front-end software release must always be at least thesame as SAP R/3. For example, you cannot use SAP GUI 3.1Iwith SAP R/3 4.0B.

When you plan upgrades to SAP software or your IT landscape, you should always consider using the latest available front-endsoftware (currently 4.6D). SAP GUI 4.6D optimizes resourceconsumption and network load and enables plug-in capabilitiesin the Web browser. As a result, SAP GUI can be displayed with-in the browser window in mySAP Workplace.

Supported Front-End Platforms

Up to and including SAP R/3 4.5B, specific versions of the SAPGUI software - as well as several enhancements - are availablefor the supported front-end platforms. This ensures that SAPR/3 transactions could be executed on the respective platforms.

The range of supported platforms up to SAP R/3 4.5B: • Windows 3.11 • Windows NT 3.51 • Windows 95, 98, and NT • OS/2 • Mac OS • Various UNIX platforms

SAP significantly enhanced SAP GUI with release 4.6. Theoption of using new front-end components gives you muchmore flexible and powerful user interfaces.

To expand these options beyond the Windows version to allsupported platforms, SAP developed a platform-independentversion of SAP GUI (SAP GUI for the Java™ environment). Thisversion has been available as a GA version since release 4.6D.

SAP also offers the browser-based SAP GUI for HTML. This ver-sion is based on SAP ITS on the server side and a Web browseron the client side.

Shipment

The SAP GUI software has been shipped as a compilation sincerelease 4.5B. For Windows platforms, these compilationscontain both SAP GUI and add-ons for supporting othermySAP.com components (like SAP BW, SAP APO, and so on).The compilations are based on a single release track (to date, 4.5and 4.6).

SAP designs a new compilation whenever one of the suppliedcomponents changes (such as SAP APO 2.0 instead of SAP APO1.1). At the same time, SAP integrates all patches that are avail-able as of the release date into the compilation. As a result, anew compilation replaces an older compilation in the samerelease track.

In addition, the SAP Front-end 4.6 Kit (for SAP GUI or SAP ITS)is also available. This package always has material number52007071, and it always contains the latest GA release of the SAPGUI CDs and the Server Components CD.

For specific information, technical details, and current news, please refer to SAP Note 166130. SAP ITS 4.6B or later, which is required to use SAP GUI forHTML, is a component of the SAP R/3 release with the samerelease number, and is supplied on the Server Components CD.Additional information is available in SAP Note 178788.

Maintenance Strategy

SAP recommends that you always use the latest SAP GUIrelease to benefit from new developments and changes in thePC landscape (such as support for new operating system releas-es and so on). When you upgrade or migrate to a new operat-ing system, we recommend installing a new SAP GUI release atthe same time.

The concurrent operation of different SAP GUI releases on onePC is not supported (see SAP Note 154156 for moreinformation). If this is unavoidable, a solution based on a termi-nal server (Windows Terminal Server or Citrix Mainframe) isavailable.

When you choose the suitable SAP GUI release, you should alsotake the hardware requirements into account. Hardwarerequirements have changed especially between SAP GUI 3.1Iand 4.0 and between 4.5B and 4.6.

Support for front-end software may differ from support for thedatabase and application server: • SAP GUI for the Windows Environment

Since January 2001, support for SAP GUI software has beenlimited to the releases 3.1I, 4.0B, 4.5B, and 4.6D.

• SAP GUI for the Java EnvironmentSupport begins with release 4.6D (first GA release). SAP rec-ommends using the latest revision (revision 20 – 4.6Dr20 – asof March 2001, for example).

43

Page 44: The Release Strategy of MySAP Components

• SAP GUI for the HTML EnvironmentSince January 2001, support for SAP ITS / SAP GUI for HTMLhas been limited to release 4.6D.

SAP SYSTEMS AND EUROPEAN MONETARY UNION

SAP provides a comprehensive euro package for SAP R/3 toensure that your changeover to the euro runs smoothly. Themaintenance fee covers the technical implementation, so thereis no extra charge.

This offering consists of the following elements: • Euro conversion and rounding logic in accordance with the

EU Council Regulation 1103/97. This regulation prevents theuse of inverse exchange rates and means that when one par-ticipating currency is converted into another, it must first beconverted to the euro and then to the target currency.

• Euro functions to make it easier to convert and process busi-ness transactions during the dual-currency phase, enablingyou, for example, to convert outstanding orders individuallyfor your business partners

• Conversion packages for converting local currencies to theeuro on a key date after year-end closing. For yourconversion, you can choose any date within the dual-curren-cy phase. Before conversion, you must close and documentthe final fiscal year in the old currency.

All three components of SAP's euro package are included inSAP R/3 for releases 3.1I, 4.0B, and higher. Euro conversion androunding logic is also supplied as an R/3 Support Package forSAP R/3 3.0D, 3.0F, and 3.1H. Please note that SAP R/3 3.0E,3.1G, and releases prior to SAP R/3 3.0D are not euro-enabled.

In addition to the euro package, SAP also offers an extensiverange of services covering all aspects of the euro changeover:• The two-day training course "Changing the SAP Systems

Over to the Euro - SAP R/3" (CA 990) covers new euro func-tions for processing business transactions during the dual-currency phase, the procedure and coordination of the localcurrency changeover, and an overview of the technical con-version.

• SAP Euro Guide covers all of the organizational and technicalaspects of the changeover process. The SAP Euro Guidereduces the need for external consultants and minimizeschangeover costs. It also provides support for your euro proj-ect planning.

Application Service Provision

Application service provision (ASP) unites software, implemen-tation, infrastructure, service, and support into solutions thatare quick to implement. Application Hosting

Application hosting meets the requirements of companies thatneed fully customized solutions, but do not want to invest inan extensive technical architecture. The benefits of this model include decreasedimplementation costs, predictable ongoing expenses, andgreater optimization of mySAP.com components. With imple-mentation hosting, SAPHosting sets up a system environmentfor the implementation of mySAP.com solutions within a veryshort timeframe (usually two weeks).

Application Management

Application management services allow companies to concen-trate on their core competencies and processes without invest-ing time or money to establish the expertise necessary to oper-ate SAP systems.
