EMILIA-ROMAGNA SMART SPECIALIZATION STRATEGY
ALMA MATER STUDIORUM – UNIVERSITA’ DI BOLOGNA
Priorities
• Increase the competitiveness of Emilia-Romagna businesses: Strengthen the innovative capacity of Emilia-Romagna’s traditional and competitive production systems: agri-food, building and construction, mechatronics and transport.
• Support emerging specialisation areas: Develop production systems fostering social innovation with high growth potential: health and life sciences industries, cultural and creative industries.
• Steer change: Increase the regional system’s capacity to respond to the societal challenges for sustainable development, healthy and active living, and information society.
• Develop services of excellence: Strengthen the leading role of services for the production system: ICT, logistics, high knowledge activities.
ALMA MATER STUDIORUM – UNIVERSITA’ DI BOLOGNA
Objectives
Product innovation Product/Market diversification Cross product/technology contamination Value chain reinforcement Product Life Cycle Assessment New forms of clusters Reinforce cooperation between productive and research system Evolution of business models Participation to EU programs: Horizon 2020
ALMA MATER STUDIORUM – UNIVERSITA’ DI BOLOGNA
The first step
Identification of "spillover areas" of the regional policies for research and innovation
A) areas that represent the fundamental vocations economy and regional identity (consolidated), B) areas that may instead drive the change, create new occupation, respond to new social needs, develop new industries and modern, stimulating innovation processes even in traditional activities by offering new content and new business models (emerging);
ALMA MATER STUDIORUM – UNIVERSITA’ DI BOLOGNA
Key element for strategic areas
• Degree of specialization at the national level and competitiveness
• Occupational relevance • Territorial pervasiveness • Export capacity and international projection • Ability to deal with social and technological challenges
Technology foresight and Enterpreneurial discovery
ALMA MATER STUDIORUM – UNIVERSITA’ DI BOLOGNA
The RER Key cluster (consolidated and emerging)
• 5 specialization areas (3 strategical and 2 high-potential) – Agrifood 16.7% – Construction 18.8% – Mechatronics 18.2%
more than 1.000.000 employers (approx 50% of the total) 80% of the RER export

The second step
Implement the key enabling technologies in the productive system a) Through the High Technology Network, organized in thematic platforms, which should serve as a link between the KETs and the regional industrial areas; b) By encorauging and promoting the creation of high tech start-ups and their rapid integration in networks and in the industrial systems

The third step
highlight the need for changes expressed by the society (innovation drivers) that can push to adopt new technologies and languages, and helping to convert and boost the productive system.
• Sustainability (energy, environment, safety, mobility) • Healthy and active life (health, wellness, active
ageing, disabilities) • Information and communication society (connectivity,
multimedia, new services, systems management)

A “Case study”
ALMA MATER STUDIORUM – UNIVERSITA’ DI BOLOGNA
Background ALMASat-1
ALMASat-1 is the first microsatellite for educational purposes entirely designed, manufactured and assembled at the University of Bologna:
• The project began in 2003 with the development and the realization of a ground station for receiving data and the tracking of satellites,
• Implementation of numerous hardware and software tools necessary for the design phase
• All subsystems of the satellite were made entirely from scratch through work placement / thesis (more than 30 students involved) or research activities dedicated
• Scientific objective: in-orbit tests of an innovative micropropulsion system
ALMA MATER STUDIORUM – UNIVERSITA’ DI BOLOGNA
ALMASat-1 Launch
Integrated into the "payload" of the inaugural flight of the carrier VEGA ESA and launched February 13, 2012 from the Guiana Space Centre
ALMA MATER STUDIORUM – UNIVERSITA’ DI BOLOGNA
ALMASpace
ALMASpace was founded in 2005 by the will of a research group composed of professors, researchers, graduate and undergraduate students of the II Faculty of Engineering, University of Bologna, to bring in the market the knowledge acquired during the academic experience.
At the end of a process of significant growth, in terms of skills and market, in January 2014 the company has been sold; The ALMASpace LTD became part of the Angelo Investments (SITAEL), a financial holding composed of high-tech companies; ALMASpace has become an industrial reality consolidated in Forli, where they still have laboratories and the headquarter
