Lothar von Richthofen: I suppose I may as well add the final post. My brother Manfred was killed in action. He had been flying over Morlancourt Ridge, near the Somme River. He manged to land in enemy territory before death. It was April 21st. They credited Captain Arthur Brown with the kill. I will never forgive or forget. He was buried the following day. 1918

  Manfred von Richthofen: I have just been released by the hospital. The doctor wishes me to be grounded but I disagree. My country needs me now. I still suffer from severe headaches because of my injury. I was glanced by a bullet on my head. I made a rough landing before they rushed me to surgery.1917

Manfred von Richthofen: I may break a record. This past April I shot down 22 credited planes. Even 4 on one day! Success is in my future. They all love me so much propaganda is spouting about me. “The Red Fighter Pilot” just got control of Jagdgeschwader 1, a wing formation group composed of Jastas 4, 6, 10, and 11. I will make Germany proud.1917

Manfred von Richthofen: After receiving the Pour le Mérite I was given my own squadron, the Jasta 11. There are many elite flyers in the squad. I did something Oswald Boelke would not have approved but I did it. I painted my plane red. I feel accomplished. I will win this war.1917

Manfred von Richthofen:  Today I did it. I took down the British Boelke, Lanoe Hawker. I shot him through the back of the head. Today I am cheerful and yet also sad. The name I bestowed on him reminds me of my late comrade Oswald Boelke. I will always grieve his loss.1916

Manfred von Richthofen: It has been confirmed, my first kill. While I believe to have done more before, but they were not confirmed. This calls for celebration. I have purchased a silver cup engraved with today’s date and type of enemy air craft. My life has turned for the better.1916

Manfred von Richthofen: After being an observer for several months I will now go into pilot training. I can feel my excitement over every inch of my body. I am quite worried that I may not do well. I do hope to try. 1915

Manfred von Richthofen: This is completely disgraceful. I was quite disappointed to become a telephone operator and field runner but this was the last straw. I will not tolerate the supply service, no sir. Soon I will ask to join the air military. There I may get some action.1915

Manfred von Richthofen: War has been declared. I will be doing cavalry reconnaissance on both the eastern and western fronts. Though because of an opening trend in trench warfare, I fear we may be dismounted. 1914

Manfred von Richthofen: I have now finished my training in the cadet school. I shall miss my days of parallel bars but there are greater things on the horizon. I have been accepted into the Uhlan cavalry unit. I am to be part of the third squadron. I hope for the best.1911

Manfred von Richthofen:  This week I was accepted into cadet training. I will follow in my father’s footsteps and make him proud. My father is a major in the military. The military school is in Wahlstatt, I wonder how I will like it.1903

Baroness Kunigunde von Richthofen : Today my precious son Manfred was born. This device will help him keep track of his life. I love him so much, but I wonder what his life will be like. He was born in Kleinburg.May 2, 1892
