Begin with four boxes: Keep, donate, trash, and other room. The toys that are broken, throw away without question. A toy that never held the interest of your child needs to be given away. Bath toys, clothing, the stolen remote control, or outdoors toys need to be put back in their proper places. If something is being held on to simply for nostalgia, i.e. little John-ny’s very first teddy bear, create a memory box or a special shelf for that item.

QUALITY NOT QUANTITYAsk yourself: “Which toys does my child gravi-tate towards, and which toys does my child get bored with?” Perhaps not everything should be given away, but consider rotating the play things to create fresh interest. A clear bin or two can be filled with the less appealing items, labeled, and put into a closet. On a bi-weekly or monthly basis, switch out the playroom stash for a re-newed sense of playtime.

LABEL, LABEL, LABELWith so many different types of things to keep track of, it’s easy to become confused about what goes where. For the things that are keep-ing their permanent space in the playroom, designate containers and label them accord-ingly. For those with pre-readers in the home, not only include the word, but the picture of the item too. This serves a dual purpose of word recognition and getting toys back to the right spot.

TAME THE LOOSE PIECESThings like board games and puzzles can eas-ily get their pieces separated. Once just a few pieces are lost, the whole thing can no longer be used, so it’s important to keep these togeth-er. For puzzles, try framing the box cover and storing the puzzle pieces on the back of the frame. This serves as both decor and a practical way to keep it all together and up off the floor. For games, take them out of the box and store them in identical, easily stackable containers. Keep puzzles and board games out of reach, so you can keep track of what is being used. HIDE IT AWAYCurtains can be used to cover and uncover the monstrosity of a toy shelf that sits in the room. Containers under a bed can be slid in after use. A bench with cube storage can be great as a reading nook, and even double as a bookshelf. A small ottoman that your child can sit on, that also has room for dress up clothes or other toys, will help contain the mess that no one will know is there.

Don’t get discouraged if it takes a while for your children to understand the new system. They will get the hang of it. On the other hand, if the mess stays messy, take a deep breath, and enjoy your little ones because as we all know, “they grow up so fast!”

NO HOT WATERLack of hot water is an issue that millions of people across

the United States experience on a daily basis. If you have

an electric water heater, some of the causes may be a

tripped circuit breaker, a bad thermostat or a faulty electric

heating element. Once you’ve finished the troubleshooting

process, the best thing to do is to replace any parts that

you find are broken. Most plumbers have extensive

knowledge of water heaters and should be contacted

immediately.

BURST PIPERegardless of the reason, a burst pipe can cause thou-

sands of dollars in damage if not rectified in an appropriate

amount of time. The best way to fix a burst pipe is with a

C clamp. The first step is to turn off the water completely.

Then, place a piece of rubber over the exposed area of

the pipe. Secure the rubber by placing a piece of wood on

top and then tightening down both pieces with a C clamp.

Make sure you tighten the C clamp until both the piece of

wood and rubber are secure.

In most cases, burst pipes can only be fixed temporarily

by homeowners. Once you’ve turned off the water and

secured the pipe, call a professional; they might have to

replace the pipe altogether.

LEAKY FIXTURESA leaky fixture, such as a faucet, can be extremely an-

noying. Luckily, you only need a few tools and some basic

knowledge to fix this type of problem.

If this simple process doesn’t work, you may need to

replace some necessary parts, such as washers or nuts, or

it may be time to get a new faucet altogether.

First, remove the handle by removing the screw that

attaches it to the faucet. Then, try tightening the packing

nut which is located at the base of the stem. After you’ve

tightened this nut, place the handle back onto the faucet

and test to see if the leak is gone.

Most toilet clogs can be handled with your trusty plunger.

The clog in your drain will likely go away if you use a

commercial grade drain cleaner. In this case, be sure to

Out of all of the rooms in the house, your bedroom should be the most personal. It should be your getaway from the chaos, and your sanctuary after a long day. Many folks find the opposite to be true of their bedroom. It maybe the catch-all for the things without a place, or be the go-to hideaway for messes from the other part of the home when guests are on their way over.

We’ve put together a few tips to help keep your bedroom as stress-free as possible.

MAINTAININGA STRESS-FREEBEDROOM

THE NOSE KNOWS Although the science behind smells can be very in-depth, the short of the mat-ter is that smells are directly linked to our emotions. The cells for our nose carry the signals of smell to our brain’s limbic system, and directly to the amyg-dala, which is involved in emotional learning and memory. This means, if there are any smells that you have a positive association with, such as the popular choices of lemon, lavender, or orange, then bring those scents into your room. One option is a diffuser with essential oils. Keep smelly dirty laundry at a minimum.

LIGHTING If you have any harsh lighting in your room, such as a fluorescent light, it has to go. Curtains are great for helping control your light-ing options. Open them in the daytime for a sun-lit look, and close them at night for optimal sleep. As a matter of fact, a good night’s sleep is huge in keeping our stress levels low. The darker the room for sleep, the better.

ORGANIZATION IS IMPORTANT If your bedroom looks more like a war zone than an oasis, then start purging! Clothes should be put away promptly, the bed should be made daily, and anything that can go into a different room of the home should be taken out. If you find the bins and dressers in your room are overflowing, then it’s time to give away or sell some of the excess clothing or accessories. There are even services out there that offer “closet edits” to help sort through your clothes and keep them organized.

ELECTRONIC FREE ZONE The age of easy access electronics is well in motion. Amidst the buzz of everyday life, your bedroom should be the one place that no phones, laptops, or screens of any kind reside. Besides being plain old distracting, electronics emit a blue light that literally suppresses the release of melatonin, the neurotransmitter that regulates our sleep wake cycle. We are so often immersed in electronics that we forget the sweet sound of silence and our own thoughts. Make your bedroom the place where you can journal, read, or even stretch.

MAKE IT UBER PERSONAL Put up those mushy pictures of you and your significant other that no one else wants to see. If you have any inspirational quotes that get you motivated, put them up in your bedroom where you will see them first thing in the morning. Sweet sentimental items could be dis-played on shelving and in shadow boxes. Whatever reminds you of your favorite memories should have a place in your bedroom sanctuary.

We all need that one room in our home that we can concentrate on keeping organized. Make that room your bedroom. Stress is one of the top things that can affect us the most, but is often ignored or overlooked. We hope these tips help in keeping your bedroom as stress free as possible.
