The Puritan LegacyTarboro High School
English 11
BackgroundThe Puritans were one
branch of separatists who decided that the Church of England was beyond reform.
Escaping persecution from church leadership and the King, they came to America.
The Puritans created a “New World” (America) where they could practice their own beliefs and values.
Basic Puritan BeliefsWhat is the
foundation of the Puritan culture and belief system?
What is a TULIP?
Total DepravityThrough Adam &
Eve’s Fall, every person is born sinful.
Original Sin – people are born sinful, not naturally good or righteous.
Unconditional Election
God “saves” those he wishes – only a few are selected for salvation.
Concept of Predestination – you are either born with your name in the book of life or you are not.
Limited Atonement
Jesus died for the chosen only, not for everyone.
Jesus died only for the elect.
Irresistible GraceGod’s grace is
freely given; it cannot be earned nor denied.
Grace is defined as the saving and transfiguring power of God.
Perseverance of the
“Saints”Those selected by God
have full power to interpret the will of God, and to live uprightly.
If anyone rejects the grace after feeling its power in his life, he will be going against the will of God – something impossible in Puritanism.
