Interview with Beatrice Courchesne Mackie
By Gurleen Padda
When Justin Trudeau and Obama both said no, we resorted to the next best person for this interview, Pauline Marois, who also said no. So we sat down with the next next best person, Beatrice Courchesne Mackie, Sacred Heart’s Vice President.
What was your first reaction, when Mr. O’Donnell announced you as the next school Vice-President of
SHSM? Actually, I was at the QAIS public speaking competition when Ms. Lessey told me! I had already presented my speech and I was extremely nervous to find out whether I had won or not. I was so excited that the students had voted me in! I was really surprised that I had won since I had only been at the school for one year but I was extremely grateful.
How heavy are the duties or the responsibility of being a Prefect? What are some of the downsides of being
a prefect? Being a prefect comes with many responsibilities. They can be considered heavy but it’s all really worth it. The only downside I would say is having to wake up earlier for uniform check. Even though each prefect has their specific role and title, we all combine our duties and help each other out in any way we possibly can.
What is the hardest thing about being vice-president? The hardest thing about being vice-president is having to divide my time in an efficient manner. Even though sometimes it’s difficult to balance homework, clubs and prefect work, it works out as long as I keep an organized schedule.
What clubs and extracurriculars are you a part of? Currently, I’m in the yearbook club where I am able to design the pages. I’m also in Loyola’s drama club which runs from September to December. This year, the play is Frankenstein! Three other secondary five students are in it as well. We really hope that some Sacred students will come watch us on December 4th and 5th! After Christmas, I plan on doing more activities but, for now, I don’t want to spread myself too thin.
What are some of the upsides of being a prefect? Being a prefect has many upsides. As someone who likes being a leader, I find it’s a great way to put my skills to the test. I also like having a say in upcoming events or proposals. I like having the opportunity to represent the school as a leader.
How did the student council system of QAA compare to that of Sacred Heart? At QAA, the voting system was a little different. We elected two co-presidents and the rest of the student council such as the treasurer were not voted in. The council was made up of approximately five girls. Something I really enjoyed was that, after each election speech, students from any grade could go up to a microphone and ask questions about platforms.
What do you miss most about QAA? How did you feel when you first found out it was closing? Even though I left QAA two years ago, I still cherish the memories I made there. I mostly miss the girls from my grade who went to different schools after QAA closed. Even though it’s sad, I feel like it was a blessing in disguise because I really love Sacred Heart. When we found out it was closing, I was mostly mad because I would have to find a new school and make new friends. (At the time I thought we would all be going to different schools.) I felt really stable at the time in my environment and it’s weird to have that stability taken away. I was sad that I would have to switch but I’m really thankful for the choice I made to come to Sacred.
What are some positive things you discovered about becoming a Sacred girl? I learned that Sacred girls have immense pride in themselves and in their school. I discovered that everybody at Sacred Heart is really supportive of one another. It’s truly a community.
The prefects just had their prefect tea, where they present all their ideas for the year to members of the
faculty. Can you give us any sneak peeks of this year’s ideas? I don’t want to say too much because it will be a really fun surprise. But I will mention that this year’s ideas revolve around improving our school spirit. The prefects have heard what students want and, this year, we plan on giving them what they have asked for. So far, almost all of the ideas we have proposed are being accepted by the faculty which is great news. We want to make everyone’s year the best it can be!
What is your advice to the future student leaders of Sacred Heart? My advice to the future leaders of Sacred Heart is to remember that being a prefect is definitely fun but also involves multiple responsibilities. Wearing the blue blouse is an honour and it’s important to make the best of your
year. It’s also important to remember that you can be a leader in the school without being a prefect. Taking initiative is something wonderful that can be done by any student of any grade.

Fall Fashion By Vanessa Pugliesi
Fall 2015 has finally arrived and it's most people's favourite time of the year. Why you might ask? Fall fashion of course.
One of the biggest trends this fall are
camel coats. Originating from huge
celebrity fans like Kim Kardashian, Zoe Saldana, Ashley Olsen and so many more, the camel coat is one of the most versatile pieces in any wardrobe. It can take a regular outfit to a high fashion put-together look in seconds. Instead of paying for the expensive designer version, head to your local Zara or Aritzia and find one that's best for you, and your budget.
3
Fall is all about the dark lip from berries to dark reds and even browns. You might be shy to use bold colours because it might not go with your complexion but there's a bold colour out there for everyone. It suits different looks ranging from Selena Gomez to Rihanna. The dark lip came about in the 1920s and made a huge comeback in the 90s. If you have no idea where to start you can try Tokyo by Buxom or Transylvania by NYX.
Last, but not least, you can't forget fall boots. Try and toss the Uggs for something more in style this fall like rain boots or combat boots. A good pair of fall boots can go with just about everything. Ankle boots are great for an everyday boot as well as the over the knee or thigh high boot. A black pair of either is great for any occasion from a day out with friends to date nights. You can find them at affordable prices at Steve Madden or Forever 21. It rains a lot in the fall and rain boots are a must. Opt for a pair of
Hunter's and if you want to go for something more unique, Zara or Kate Spade is the place for you.

Sports Report By Rosemarie Cianci
Now that Halloween is approaching, you all know what that means: hockey
season has started! It is, along with the holidays, the most wonderful part of the
winter. The Montreal Canadiens have been doing incredibly these past few games,
winning their first seven games in a row. This is a new record for the club, who
recently had several new players come join the team. Some of their newly traded
players include: Tomas Fleischmann and Alexander Semin. We will see how they
contribute to this incredible
organization as the season
progresses. For now, GO HABS
GO!!
Another Canadian team that has
been doing excellently are the
Toronto Blue Jays. They are no
Montreal Expos, but since our
wonderful city no longer has a
team, they are the closest we come
to baseball. They are currently in
the semifinals for the MLB
championships against the Kansas
City Royals. Wishing our fellow Canadians some good luck to win it all!
Top 10 Halloween Costumes for 2015 By Arthega Selvarajan
Ghosts: This costume won the best dressed award in our school last
year. It is creative, comfy and hilarious all at the same time. Definitely
a go-to for this year.
Monopoly men: Though this costume is
not very popular everywhere, it is definitely
known at Sacred Heart. This costume has
been rocked by Patricia and Clarissa
throughout the years and has become somewhat of a second mascot for
our school.
5
Mickey and Minnie: There is no better way to show your love than
dressing up as the adorable duo of Mickey and Minnie. This costume has
been worn throughout the ages as a couple costume and the odds of it
going out of popularity are next to impossible. So be sure to go as a cute
duo of M&M’s this year!
Minions: This costume has gained an enormous
amount of popularity with the movie,
“Despicable Me”, making people want to dress
up as these cute yellow creatures. Just hope
that you don’t bump into a banana this
Halloween!
Scooby-Doo Gang: #Squadcostume. The
Scooby-Doo gang has been recreated
at Halloween for years and is a great
costume for you and your group to
dress up as.
Mario and Luigi: This costume is
the definition of friendship goals. Framed after
the two popular gaming characters, it is definitely
a popular costume that even celebrities like Kylie
Jenner and her BFFs wear.
Black cat: This is the most basic costume of the
year, yet it is also extremely comfy. With a onesie
modelled like a cat, you will be warm but
look good when you trick or treat. This is
the purrrrfect costume for all you animal
lovers!
Thing 1 and Thing 2: This is a costume
that is both creative and fun. Consisting of a pre-made
onesie with labels at the front and a blue coloured
wig, you and your friend will be the joke of the party.
PB and J sandwich: This couple costume is a
delicious match! With one person being peanut butter on bread and the other being
jam, you are destined to be the sweetest duo there.
Pyjama Kid: This is a costume for people who are lazy, want to be comfortable on
Halloween or have the creative thinking of a rock. Though it may not be the most
extravagant costume, it definitely is the easiest to find. But on the bright side at least
you will have a good night’s sleep.
Best Haunted Houses in Montreal By Emma Frattasio
As Halloween approaches, Montrealers are gearing up for the scary festivities. Luckily,
Montreal is well equipped with terrifying venues sure to create an immersive experience. The
city’s rich past is kept alive by the supernatural, haunting the streets every Halloween.
Additionally, Montreal has many attractions known to frighten all visitors.
Here are some of the scariest places to check out this Halloween:
1) Peur Depot
Located in The Old Port of Montreal, Peur
Depot is a three level adventure based on the
game Virus. This attraction features a high
intensity course centered around an
epidemic. Through interactions with
zombies and fear-inducing technology, Peur Depot immerses visitors in an apocalyptic
simulation. As Peur Depot will be closing November 1st, you have until then to see if you will
join the 2800 visitors who have chickened out!
2) Fright Fest- La Ronde
Through November 1st, La Ronde theme park will be
hosting its 14th annual Fright Fest. Every weekend of
October the park is transformed into a Halloween
Playground, featuring Haunted Houses, scare zones, and
marauding creatures. In this instalment, Fright Fest
plans to disturb its guests with themes of zombies and
taxidermy. For the faint of heart, La Ronde offers family
activities. These include freaky monsters and Halloween make-up tutorials.
6
3) Mount Royal Cemetery
Nothing beckons to the Halloween-minded like a
cemetery after dark. While the maze-like structure
of this venue is enough to deter potential visitors,
the Mount Royal cemetery is said to be haunted.
Most of the paranormal figures are nondescript.
However, survivors have noted an Algonquin
warrior roaming the site after hours.
4) The Royal Victoria Hospital
While free health care is scary enough to
our American neighbours, The Royal Vic is
chilling for other reasons. A common trait
of hospital folklore is the return of former
residents; deceased patients are said to
wander through the wards, reviving their
past suffering. Some spirits have interacted with visitors, maintaining an air of mystery
through quick disappearances.
5) The Queen Elizabeth Hotel
Before booking your next stay at the
infamous Queen Elizabeth Hotel, here are
some spooky facts to consider. Guests have
reported abrupt noises, banging on doors,
and powerful forces. The landmark spirit of
The Queen Elizabeth Hotel is a woman of noble stature, dressed in white. Her late night
walks have included room visits, creating a legacy of fear within the hotel.

DIY Decorations By Veronica Sinclair
With Halloween just around the corner, most people are probably starting to decorate for
this fun and spooky holiday. Here are some DIY decorations that anyone can do that will let
you decorate without spending a ton of money, and have fun while making them too!
Painting Pumpkins: There are ton of ways
that you can paint pumpkins and can even
make small ones for in the house too. Here
are some of the many ways to paint them:
• Paint your jack-o-lantern face or design right
onto your pumpkin. You won’t need to go
through the mess of carving it and will have
much cleaner lines. You can also add
accessories to it to make it a witch, cat, or
other Halloween creature.
• Use glow in the dark paint. Your pumpkins will be seen on Halloween night without
needing to use candles and will definitely stand out.
• Paint the pumpkin a solid colour (white or black are great go-tos for this), and once it’s dry
let paint of various colours drip down the sides, starting from the stem. If you like you can
also add glitter as the paint drys.
• You could also just use glitter instead of paint. Just put glue (any kind of glue will work
fine) in the shape of the design you want to do and add glitter onto it before it drys. You
could also paint it before you add the glitter design.
Glowing Eyes: Cut eye shapes into empty toilet
paper rolls and put a glow stick in the middle. Then
hide them in your bushes and trees to create creepy
creatures hiding around your house.
Bloody Handprint: Mix red food colouring and Elmer’s craft
glue to make a handprint on one or more of your windows.
10
Illuminated Ghosts:
Materials: Strand of white lantern lightsWhite cotton fabricWhite elasticsScissorsBlack Sharpie
• Cut approximately 14” squares out of the fabric and make a hole in the center. The number of squares you have will depend on the length of your string of lights.
• Carefully remove the lantern from the light and thread the light through the hole in the fabric.
• Secure the lantern back into place and secure the fabric around it using an elastic.
• Draw eyes and a mouth using a black Sharpie.
