Cut or Keep? Conflicts over Australian Woodchipping

Monthly Meeting - Wednesday March 18th, 8pm, Dickson Library

The woodchipping debate is a heated one. Emotions often run high. Most of us have an opinion. How many of us . though, really understand the issues? Do you feel that those with vested interests often present distorted, one-eyed arguments?

At our March meeting not one, but three, guest speakers fron the ANUs Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies will form a panel to give us as dispassionate a presentation as you will be likely to hear on woodohipping in Australia. Each speaker has been involved extensively in the woodchipping industry through research, critical evaluation and the publishing of pertinent papers.

The guest speakers are John Dargavel, John Formby and Paul Parker. Their talks will cover:-

1/ UJoodohips as the epitomy of the five-way conflicts between economic. environmental, social, political and scientific concerns.

2/ History of woodohip exports and their planned extension.

3/ Clearfelling. sustained yield and environmental effects.

4/ Economic and trade issues.

5/ Environmental Impact Assessments and the political process.

There will then be an open question and answer discussion time when the panel will respond to your questions and comments. Make sure you are there so you can become informed. Being informed can help you better form your own opinion. The acting Conservation Officer, Patrick Tobin, has encouraged club members to attend the Conservation Council's April 4-8th activity weekend in support of the forest areas of the South-East Region near Eden. The evening of March 18th should be an informative prelude to this.

President's Prattle On a number of Club walks lately I have been surprised to find people trying to dump rubbish which they claim to be 'biodegradable". It appears that some people are not aware of the accepted rule now within bushwalking clubs that everything carried in must be carried out. So called "biodegradable" items ltke seeds, paper. orange peel and apple cores can take a long time to degrade. In the meantime the bush can be left looking like a refuse tip. Dumping any kind of rubbish in the bush destroys its pristine character and considerably detracts from other people's enjoyment of these areas. You do not dump rubbish in your living room so why dump rubbish in areas where other people are walking and camping?

Wherever possible toilet paper should be burnt or at the very least buried about 8" below the surface. Tampons and sanitary napkins should either be burnt or carried out. I will never forget seeing an old tampon caught up in twigs just above where I was collecting water in a tiny side stream near a hut in New Zealand.

The level of use of bushwalking areas is increasing rapidly and we all have a responsibility to preserve these areas for future users. This also means carrying out other people's rubbish when you find it. Remember the old adage. Take only photographs and leave only footprints:

On a lighter note our roving conservation officer. Julie Andrew made it to WA. After some days recuperating on Rottnest Is from the long bus trip, she is heading off to Geraldton from where she plans to bike to Kalbarri National Park.

Minimal Impact Bushwalking - that is what

"One of the largest problems facing national park managers is the question of overuse of wilderness and back-country areas" begins an article from the Australian Ranger Bulletin, Vol. 4 No. 1 1986. Anyone who has walked or camped near a blackened stone ring piled high with rusting cans has seen the problem first hand.

The . Tasmanian National Parks and Wildlife Service determined three basic options to alleviate overuse problems.

1/ Limiting the number of walkers Decreasing the amount of damage done by issuing walking permits: can be

an effective way of reducing environmental degradation. It will, though. limit the wilderness experience for many walkers and cause imposition of regulations contrary to the spirit of "wilderness".

2/ Hardening the environment Developing walking tracks, enlarging huts, establishing fireplaces and

supplying firewocd. will all limit and confine impact but will also create financial burdens and, being artificial tntrusions between the walker snd the bush, severely diminish the natural quality of the wilderness.

Page 6: The€¦ · publishing of pertinent papers. The guest speakers are John Dargavel, John Formby and Paul Parker. Their talks will cover:- 1/ UJoodohips as the epitomy of the five-way

El 3/ Education

Neither diminishing of the wilderness nor expensive to implement. educating people to "do the right thing" can work well, as walkers see positive results from their own efforts. It is. though, a long term process rather than a project with instantaneous changes as are the other options.

The Tasmanian NP&WS determined a combination of all these techniques would be needed to cope with overuse problems. As part of their education programme leaflets have been produced. A copy is held by the club for your reference but the points can be summarised as follows. Whilst written with Tasmania in mind most points are appltcable in all our walking areas. So take not&

1/ Planning Go in a small (4-8) party which is more socially pleasant and causes less impact. Go off-peak to spread the burden. Plan to camp at recognised camp sites and not create new ones.

E/ Fire The great stove debate continues. Their use is recommended everywhere and there are fuel stove only areas: rainforest, highland and peat areas.

If you must light a fire: keep it small use an existing fireplace (even if it's not exactly where you would like it). do not circle it with rocks which are just another ugly scar. use only dead fallen wood. put fires out with water not soil.

3/ Gastro Where there is a toilet use it. Where there is not, bury it 15cm deep in the soil's organic layer. Go lOOm away from campsites and waterways. Carry out sanitary pads/tampons unlikely to biodegrade. In snow, try to find somewhere you can dig into the soil. Snow melts in Spring but your waste does not. Flies love food - cover it always and do not put it on hut tables or furniture where flies land.

4/ Pack it in. pack it out Avoid carrying potential rubbish such as bottles, cans etc. Do not forget to carry out silver foil, orange peel, cigarette butts etc. If the other idiots (my word, K-A) have left their rubbish, please carry out that too (it gives you a nice warm glow. K-A).

5/ On the right track Stay on established tracks confining damage to a planned route. Do not cut corners on zig-zag tracks or create new tracks round increase erosion and visual scarring. Spread out in open untracked country to disperse damage. Avoid walking on easily damaged areas like cushion plants, alpine Wear the minimum weighted footwear required for the terrain. where possible. Walk softly".

8/ Washing Wash 50 metres away from streams and lakes. Use gritty sand and a scourer, not soap to clean dishes. Do not put food scraps in streams or lakes.

7/ No trace camping . - - -

bogs which

bogs etc. sands hoes

use sow impact campsites ... sandy or hard surfaces rather than baggy or vegetated. Do not cut saplings for tent poles or fern fronds for beds. Use existing campsites and leave them better than you found them, remove rubbish and dismantle fireplaces.

Gold Seeking on the Rowntung Continued from February

I like the diorite country north of the Kowmung. between Christy's and Lannigans Creek- Going westward I like it better. I would have liked to go west as far as Limeburner's Creek but Maxwell assured us that we had almost reached our western limit on horseback. From here this tremendous chasm closes in its perpendicular walls right on its source at the feet of snow-flecked Mounts Shivering and Weronq.

So far the only renown this region has is derived from its cedar. It is the Australian Lebanon. I saw some magnificent cedar trees growing in the gullies: trees that are now worth from 30 to 50 pounds each. A number that formerly grew near the river have been felled. These were got to the river by great labour and bush craft. They were lashed together in small lots and left to wait the flood that would carry them out to the Nepean. The owners would wait at narrow bends or at known obstacles during flood time and push the impeded logs out into the stream with poles: Maxwell told us of an attempt made to navigate a raft out to the Nepean by a party of cedar getters. They had a perilous time and on several occasions nearly lost their lives before they reached the Cox. The Rowmung is a very rapid turbulent river when in flood. Being narrow, crooked and walled, it does not lend itself to such navigation, and no one ever attempted to float down on a raft again. Many logs are lost on the way. They get snagged in inaccessible places and years afterwards have been carried out by greater floods.

In passing I think good use could be made of the greater part of the river country that I traversed as a summer run for sheep of the Southdown or Shropshire breeds. The northern side especially looks sweetly grassed. Ticks would be a nuisance because the myrtle in some of the gullies is infested by the common tick.

We returned home via Coolung. which is a much easier though longer way. Nowadays a trip to the Kowmung can be done easily in ten days - that is. from

Sydney and return. Yerranderrie is about five miles off as the crow flies, but there is an easy bush track via Burn's Gap to Church Creek. This might make the route about 12 m1es. With a mining town like Verranderrte within walking distance, prospecting is made comparatively easy. My nearest depot was nearly 50 miles off, with mostly roadless and rough country intervening.

When immense reserves of second class ore worth vast sums of money, now lying near the tips at Yerranderrie through want of a railway, are put through the furnaces, flux willbe ready at Church Creek; and the coal now lying dormant in the bowels of Tonalli Peak will be waiting at the skips.

Evolving from this industrial era we now see unfolding the scenic beauties of the Kownung as seen from the main ridge right on to the Cox will become a national asset.. There is room for hordes of seekers of pure mountain air and romanttc glens. What a heritage we have here, ye cubs of Britain! See that the sentinel statesmen fall not asleep.

(This article is an edited version of a column by W.A.C. that appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald. 15/S and 21/S 1910.3

Fred Muir wrote in response; I was all over the same country in lees on the same quest with a party of eight. We were out for seven months, but though we tried all the creeks and gullies for perhaps 30 miles or more, we found nothing payable. The whole district is full of all kinds of native fauna and flora and is perhaps the most interesting part of NSW. If W.A.C. killed ten snakes and ten of each kind of goanna and lizard every day, he would then probably only have killed one in a million.

Notes

1/ This is the only time I have come across the probable source of the name Christy's Creek.

2/ The party probably followed the cedar trail up onto Scotts Main Range then along the bridle track to descend Bulga Range to opposite Christy's Creek.

3/ I wonder how the "hordes of seekers' or fresh air would feel about encountering the belching black smoke and the carriage of limestone to the smelt e r 5.

7 it provides a magniftcent panorama of the central Brtndabella area for most of its length. Starting from the Orroral tracking station site, the plan is tp walk to Cotter Flats via Cotter Gap, then spend the afternoon climbng Mount kelly Spur. We will probably camp at a small tarn high on the spur and continue over Mts Kelly and Namadgi next morning. The route back to Orroral Valley has good appeal and involves a short climb over Mt. Mavis 1722 492) followed by a 500m descent to Rendezvous Creek to pick up the Nursery Creek Trail. Each of the peaks has 350 degree views and Mamadgi has an old Aboriginal ceremonial ground near its summit.

Sunday April 12th - Coronet Peak - L/M Map: ACT 1:100000

This is a long walk but is mainly on tracks or fire trails. The route, starting from Orroral Valley, is along a fire trail to Cotter Gap then down the new fire trail along Pond Creek to the Cotter Valley. We will then take to the bush for the 400m ascent of Coronet Peak. On a clear day Coronet Peak offers superb views round most of the compass and is a particularly good vantage point for the Bimberi Range. Please note that though fairly easy this walk is long and involves a considerable change in altitude so a modicum of physical fitness is necessary. There is a limit of 15.

April 17-20th - Kosciusko National Park car swap from Bradneg's Gap to

Snowy Adit - M/R Maps: Khancoban and Mount Kosciusko 1:50000

A relaxed crossing of the park from east to west or vice versa via 2 less used entry points. The direct distance between start and finish points can be covered in less than 4 days, enabling one or two side trips to be taken, notably to Mt Jagungal. Good views can be obtained from Jagungal. the Bulls Peaks and the Grey Mare Range.

The majority of walking will be over snow grass covered rolling country, but there will also be some fire trail walking on the first and last days and some mint bush to be negotiated.

Rod Peters and Brian Palm

May 17-25th (negotiable) - Outback National Parks - S/M

The trip will be about 4 days in the Sturt National Park with about a day each at Menindee Lakes and Mootwingee National Parks. The longest backpacking component is not likely to be more than 2 days. There is some high ground in Mootwingee and a little in Sturt but the remainder of the terrain is relatively flat.

I have 2 starters at present but others are welcome to join the trip provided one offers transport. preferrably 4WD. 4WC is not strictly necessary .......unless it rains.

Or Paradise Found or Genuflections on Genesis 'And the Lord God planted a garden southward' from Eden and there he put the man ('Adam Brown), whom he had formed - "And the Lord God said it is not good that man should be alone: I will make a help meet for htm And he did. In fact he made many helps meet for him, but said 'of every tree of the garden thou mayst freely eat but thou mayt not have more than IS helps meet in the Garden of Eden.

Page 10: The€¦ · publishing of pertinent papers. The guest speakers are John Dargavel, John Formby and Paul Parker. Their talks will cover:- 1/ UJoodohips as the epitomy of the five-way

'Adam' was moved. Had he not been given the key to Paradise There was Mewtors's Beach. there was the Little River Beach. there was Wadgee Beach. there were lagoons and moors and rivers and swamps. There was sunshine and clear warn water and sand dunes broad and high fit to rival the Sahara. There was fowl of the air and especially there was fish of the sea.

But A. Brown was a man of great compassion. Could he deny the least of his brethren access to paradise? Was it not enough that on "Palm" Sunday. 4 would have to quit and enter the waste lands to the South" Whom could he have excluded. There was the High Prtest of sunshine and warm water in his rare role of disciple; there were Greg the Good and Gregarious, Brave Barbara the Blistered. John the Just (just too content to tackle Cape Howe). There were Gentle George and the Patrician Woman who set up "camp satellite" to fish and lead the contemplative life. There was Rene the Righteous, a solace to mankind. who set up Camp Wadgee's first snoring-free zone; and there was divining Rod (or was it Rod the Divine) who divined fresh water at Cape Howe and carried 40lbs of it the Bkms back to Camp Nadgee.

They could not be excluded even when imperfections were found in Paradise, e.g. sweet Margot Malone found myriads of mussels but nary a cockle, the sun simply did not shine on "Palm" Sunday and the fish, though diligently pursued, were not in the prayed for plenty.

Such dreadful imperfections! and why? Was it that the Saturday sacrifice of the singed hair was simply not enough? Was St Peter at the gate angry and still counting. Did Oaring Doug not quit paradise after all? Could it be known already that the High Priest of Sunshine and Warm Water will gird up his loins to return to his homelands BEFORE the sacrifice of the winter solstice?

Who knows! But it will be marvellous fun to seek perfection again next year.

For the Purists

Nadgee Nature Reserve (Nadgee 1:25000) was visited for the Australia Day long weekend. It is a very sensitive area so only 20 campers are allowed in at any one time, 15 from the CBC. On Friday night we camped in a rest area Skms south of Kiah on the Princes Highway. On Saturday we took the Wombeyan Road to the east and travelled approximately 18kms on dirt roads, till we began our walk right on the coast. We walked to Nadgee Beach the first day and camped in a sheltered area behind the beach. On Sunday we took a day walk to Cape Howe on the Victorian Border where 4 walkers swapped with 4 who had begun their walk led by Brian Palm at Mallacoota. Some fished, some swam, some walked, but everyone shared the magic that is Nadgee.
