St. Patrick’s Day

St.Patrick’s Day

Te Story of St. Patrick

St. Patrick was born in Kilpatrick, Scotland, in the year 387. When he was sixteen, Patrick was carried off into captivity by Irish marauders and was sold as a slave to a chieftain in a territory of the present country of Antrim in Ireland. After six years he fled from his cruel master and headed back to Britain. By this time his heart was set on devoting himself to the service of God in the sacred ministry. Legend says that on Easter Sunday St. Patrick plucked a shamrock from the ground and explained that it represented the blessed Trinity. Right up until his death on 17 March 460 A.D. Patrick continued to watch over the churches, which he had founded in all the provinces in Ireland. Patrick traveled extensively, baptizing, confirming, and preaching as well as building churches, schools and monasteries.

March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day. It’s a national Irish holiday. But many people who immigrated to the United States have come from Ireland. Today, it is said, Irish descendants in the United States put on a noisier and bigger St. Patrick’s Day celebration than the people in Ireland.

Every year on March 17 or the preceding Saturday, cities with large population of Irish Americans have parades. Green is one of the national colours of Ireland and also one of the signs of spring. Green stripes are painted on the streets where the parade will travel. People wear green shirts, ties. Hair ribbons and hats. Many American bars even serve green been on that day!

A Wee Bit of St. Patrick’s Day Fun

St. Patrick’s Day is fun to celebrate by doing things like decorating shamrock cookies or making shamrock necklaces or pins. If you’re planning a St. Patrick’s Day party you can use your homemade shamrock jewelry for playing a party game. Have each person wear their shamrock necklace or pin and tell them that they may not cross any part of their bodies, i.e. hands, legs or feet. They then must keep an eye on all the other party guests and if they catch any one crossing anything, they may go to that person and request their shamrock jewelry and wear it in addition to their own. The person wearing the most shamrock jewelry by the end of the party is the winner of this game.

Another fun game is to hide a small pot of gold chocolate coins and let your guests search for it. If you’re planning to serve food at your party, you could draw a four leaf clover on the bottom of one of your plates and have a door prize for the guest who selects that plate. For some fun you can place your invitation message on shamrocks cut from green construction paper, or you could use the one-serving size boxes of cereal and place your invitation message on the back with a large mailing label; then just wrap the boxes and mail them to your guests.

A St. Patrick’s Day Party Buffet is fun and easy because just about any kind of food can be tinted green. A more traditional meal of corned beef and cabbage is another option and you can add lots of green side dishes to go along with it. A Blarney Stone surrounded by shamrocks, a Leprechaun sitting next to a pot of gold chocolate coins, or ever an Irish Derby many great centerpieces for a St. Patrick’s Day Buffet table. Clear carbonated beverages can be tinted green to fill a punch bowl, and mint chocolate chip ice cream makes a great St. Patrick’s Day dessert.

The Legend of the Leprechaun

An Original Poem by Sheri AmonOh, the leprechaun, a mysterious tallow. An Irish tairy he be.An untriendly sort who keeps to himself.A miserly tallow is he.

Making shoes tor his living, not a bit does he spend.Instead stores it all in a pot.At the end to the rainbow his hiding place is,And to tind it will bring you good luck.It you happen to hear a shoemaker’s hammer,Iis the sound that a leprechaun makes.Find him and corner him and cornet him, he’ll tell you his secret,It a stare you can maintain.

Look not away tor this tairy is tricky. He’ll attempt to sway your glance.Gone he will be, look away tor a moment,And you’ll lose your one only chance.I’m Looking Over a Four Leaf CloverI’m looking over a tour leat clover That I over-looked before. One leat is sunshine,The second is rain,Ihird is the rose that grows in the lane.No need explaingThe one remainingIs somebody I adore.I’m looking over a tour leat cloverThat I over looked before!

The Little People of Ireland Irish LegendLeprechauns

Have also become self-appointed guardians of ancient treasure, burying it in crocks or pots. This may be one reason why leprechauns tend to avoid contact with humans whom they regard as foolish, flighty creatures. If caught by a mortal, he will promise great wealth if allowed to go free. He carries two leather pouches. In one there is a silver shilling, a magical coin that which he uses to try and bribe his way out of difficult situations. This coin usually turns to leaves or ashes once the leprechaun has parted with it. However, you must never take your eyes off him, for he can vanish in an instant.
