Calves impacted by pneumonia during the first 90 days of life are more likely to experience increased age at first calving, higher incidence of dystocia, lower milk production and greater mortality before first calving.1

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is far too common on dairies, but detecting respiratory disease symptoms early in a calf’s life can help prevent chronic infections and lead to better future lifetime productivity.

Are you looking for the right signs to know if a calf has contracted BRD? Both the University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of California, Davis offer scoring systems to help determine if your calf is showing clinical signs of respiratory disease.

These symptoms could include:• Eye discharge• Nasal discharge• Ear droop• Head tilt• Cough• Increased breathing rate• Elevated temperature• Slow, reduced or zero milk

intake during feeding• Slow to rise at feeding time• Slow to lie down after eating

You can use either the UW-Madison scoring system or UC Davis scoring system to record your calves’ symptoms on a daily basis to help determine which animals are sick. Early detection and treatment with an antibiotic approved for use in calves may reduce the risk of treatment failure to help get its health back on track.

Remember to always work with your veterinarian to ensure effective and responsible antibiotic use. Preventing violative residues to help protect consumer confidence lies in your hands.

The cost to raise a heifer from birth to freshening can exceed $2,000 per head.2 Does it pay to put a calf’s future at risk before she even has a chance to return her profit as a lactating cow? Ask A Vet with Megan Tiffany, DVM, ANIMART

Recommended vitamin supplementation strategies:Dr. Larry Judge is licensed in MI.

A supply shortage of Vitamins A and E has resulted in rising prices, making it necessary for you to re-evaluate your

farm’s vitamin needs.

First, make sure Vitamins A and E are fed according to National Research Council recommendations. For a Jersey or Holstein lactating/dry cow and heifer, this would equate to 50,000 to 70,000 IU/day (50 IU/lb) for Vitamin A. Vitamin E should be included in feed at 500 to 1000 IU/day (0.35 to 0.7 IU/lb) for a lactating Holstein cow and a dry Holstein cow. Jerseys would require 350 to 750 IU/day for lactating and dry cows.

Surveys have shown many are including these vitamins at twice the recommended levels, while there is no evidence indicating any benefits.

If you need to further reduce vitamin supplementation, never, ever skimp on your pre-fresh cows. Instead, decrease the lactating cow vitamin inclusion rate as it will not be as noticeable.

Q: My neighbor had success with product X to treat scours, why didn’t it work on my calves?

A: The old phrase “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” runs true with calf scours.

First, you need to know your enemy. You can get a pretty good idea of what you’re dealing with in 10 minutes using an on-farm calf-side scours test. With that information, our veterinarians can help develop an appropriate vaccination protocol for newborn calves and/or dry cows to best suit your management style and combat those pathogens. For calves currently scouring, appropriate hydration therapy in the form of IV or SQ fluids may be necessary for calves not strong enough to drink. Appropriate oral fluids may be indicated for calves still able to nurse or drink.
