President’s Report
Well not too much drama for my first meeting.
Well, I did forget the National Anthem....Rescued, thanks to our alert committee.
Incentive Prize Organiser and Club Jester forgot to attend the last meeting.
Their excuse is very understandable: homeless a sorry state to be in.
Bob’s Anzac talk very interesting and informative gave us another insight into our “Diggers”.
Inducting our new members Stewart & Irene, as the new president, at our last meeting was an
added pleasure for me.
There was a good turn up to the after meeting lunch last month, well done Aub.
Our first evening’s dine-out was a great success, good food, good friends and plenty of
chatter. Excellent choice Jo and the fruit salad delicious. hic!!
Tuesday’s breakfast at Vikings just perfect, weather, food and company.
Lunch after the meeting in May, is at Burleigh Golf Club, it is our 11th birthday, so there may
be a tiny surprise!! As usual many thanks to all our helpers.

BOOK REVIEW
Neal Stephenson’s “Cryptonomicon” Arrow Books London 2001 and available Gold Coast
libraries
Well you have probably seen the recent movie “The Imitation Game” about British
mathematician Alan Turing’s cracking of the German Enigma code and the development of the
computer. Well this fictional masterpiece puts the flesh to that story in a novel of such ambition
and intensity that most modern fiction looks timid and shallow in comparison.
Neal Stephenson hacks into the secret histories of nations and the private obsessions of men,
decrypting with great virtuosity the forces that shaped the last century. Entwining stories of the
cracking of WW2 Axis codes with the establishment of modern internet, data storage and
digital related industries in the present, it explores themes of power, secrecy, information and
war in the twentieth century in a gripping page turning thriller. It is the first great historical
novel about cyber-culture.
At 918 pages it is an astonishing and monumental performance. Starting with the shocking
historical image of the burning Hindenburg, Neal Stephenson steps off into uncharted territory,
upping his own literary ante after a decade and a half of writing overt science fiction novels.
He has given us a vastly complex book that ranks the author in the same category as Kurt
Vonnegut or Thomas Pynchon -- similarities to Gravity's Rainbow are obvious -- in the way
World War II and the modern day are interwoven around several generations of an American

family and their interactions with history.
The Waterhouse’s, Lawrence and his grandson Randy, are at the core of a novel which
constantly shifts between World War II and the present. Lawrence is a key player in the crypto
project that broke the German and Japanese military codes. Not only are the Allies privy to
General Rommel and Admiral Yamamoto's every directive, they are continually faced with the
moral dilemma of whether or not to act upon their hacked knowledge, thereby risking
disclosure. RAF Detachment 2702 is formed as a sort of paramilitary counterintelligence force
to keep the secret of the cracked codes. We travel from the occupation of Shanghai by the
Japanese, through Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, North Africa, the Battle of the Atlantic, the death
of Yamamoto and the last stand of the Japanese on lonely Pacific redoubts, never once losing
track of character or narrative purpose. Not only do we meet endearing men such as Lawrence
Waterhouse -- who strolls on landscapes far from the enemy lines designing the cryptographic
strategies of Detachment 2702 -- but also Corporal Bobby Shaftoe, a morphine-addicted marine
who carries out the physical grunt work in the jungles of the Pacific, the deserts of North Africa,
and even the depths of the Atlantic ocean. Also present are Enoch Root, a larger-than-life
Priest-Warrior of ANZAC origins; Goto Dengo, a Japanese soldier who survives life amongst
the cannibal tribes of New Guinea to carve out a mountain for mysterious military purposes;
and Commander Schoen, a crypto-genius who is amassing the Cryptonomicon, the ultimate
collection of documents about human ciphers, a man driven insane by the psychic effect of his
own chosen profession.
Shuttling back and forth between the men of mind (the cryptographers, mathematicians,
strategists and politicians) and the men of action (marines, sailors, pilots, treasure divers, U-
boat captains), Stephenson weaves a series of narrative threads that span decades, eventually
harmonizing into a narrative unity that leaves the reader with a euphoric sense of epic pleasure.
As may be obvious, it's difficult to summarize just exactly what this book is about -- computer
technology, cryptography, the Internet, the controversy over digital privacy, the legacy of
World War II, death, global politics and computer operating systems; all are essential elements
in a complex but sumptuous feast of ideas. Indeed, Cryptonomicon seems to be about
everything, or at the very least, the use of symbol systems and decryption to discover the true
nature of everything.
It’s the most enjoyable fiction read I’ve had since first discovering “Catch 22” by Joseph Heller.

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL ANTHEM
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
This is the first verse of five originally written. For you June.
