  • Determination. Energy. Hard work. Heart. All things needed to get to the top. As the postseason got underway, the Lady Crusaders couldn’t have been more ready to begin their final journey to the top. On Thursday, February 25, the Lady Crusaders took on Arcadia Valley for the Class 3 District Championship. After a hard-fought game, the Crusaders walked away with a 64-51 win over Arcadia, the girls’ fourth consecutive district championship. That’s Determination. After all the celebration had ended, the ladies went right back to work to prepare for their sectional game against Twin Rivers. The Crusaders flew past their opponent with a 63-32 victory over a team they had lost to earlier in the year. That’s Energy. The quarter final game...the game the girls lost last year in a heartbreaking overtime to Park Hills Central. This was their ticket to the Final Four; there was no backing down and no giving up! With 2:42 left on the clock, the Lady Crusaders trailed by four points. Shortly after that, senior Brianna Mueller made a game-changing three pointer that pulled her team within one point of the Lady Rebels. A few seconds later, she got hold of a Rebel turnover and scored a putback to bring the Crusaders to a 40-39 lead over Park Hills. The buzzer sounded, and the Crusaders took home a long-awaited triumph over Park Hills Central, 45-39. That’s Hard Work.

Amidst the joy, though, there was some bad news. During the game, starting senior Ali Galemmo, broke her foot and was to be out the rest of the season. Nevertheless, Ali was right there with them every step of the way, doing all she could from the bench to encourage the team. After the win, the ladies went right back to work, yet again, putting in the time to improve and perfect every aspect of their game. On March 9, the Lady Crusaders headed to Columbia to prepare for their first opponent, the Southern Boone Eagles. Two chartered buses full of fans followed the next day to cheer the ladies on in this crucial nail-biter. Going into the fourth quarter the game was tied 30-30. The girls weren’t shooting their best that day, and they really didn’t have much of an outside force. However, time after time this year, when someone wasn't having her best game, the other teammates stepped up and rose to the occasion. Maddie Brune and Ashylnn Collier did just that! They both fought hard in the post, pulling down numerous key rebounds. The Crusaders won with a score of 53-40. They were going to the Championship! On March 12, the girls took the floor for the last time this season--and for our eight seniors, the last time in their high school careers. The ladies tipped off against the Strafford Indians, and the Class 3 State Championship game had begun. Starting

off, things didn’t look very good for the Crusaders. In the first half the girls weren’t knocking down shots and weren’t a big offensive threat, coming back from an 11 point deficit to trail by 3 at the half. Moving to the second half, not much changed until the fourth quarter. Trailing by nine points with six minutes to play, the ladies forced six straight Indian turnovers. Unfortunately, they couldn’t capitalize on them. Even though the team wasn’t playing very well, with 31 seconds left in the game senior Raegan Wieser made a three point basket to pull the score within two points, 46-44. That would be as close as the girls would get. With the final score of 50-46, the Lady Crusaders took home second place at the Class 3 State Championship, but they worked their tails off and fought hard until the very end. That’s Heart. The Lady Crusaders ended their amazing season with 29 wins and 3 losses. The seniors completed their four year career capturing a total of 106 wins and a mere 13 losses. We are very proud of our girls and all they have achieved. We are sad to see our seniors go, but they have given us memories to last a lifetime.

A Four Year Career in a Single Quote "The past four years have been a very rewarding experience that I will always remember. I am a very grateful and thankful coach. The day-to-day interaction with the seniors was fun. They all have great and unique personalities that I enjoyed very much. I'm feeling very blessed."

    Coach Sides

"There was nothing I looked forward to more than basketball season! Every year I've made unforgettable memories with teammates that became my sisters and a coach that became my role model."

Raegan Wieser "If there is one thing I'll miss more than high school basketball, it's Coach Sides. I owe that man everything, and I am so blessed to have had him as my coach, mentor, and father-figure for the last four years."

    Brianna Mueller

"High school basketball has taught me to love my teammates and coaches like family and to give your all in everything you do and never give up. I couldn't have asked for a better last, final four years of basketball with the best teammates and coaches."

    Tess Daniel

"I've learned to realize I was a part of something greater than myself. As soon as you and your team figure that out, nothing can stop you. Love your teammates, love your coaches, love the game, and it will love you back."

    Grace Mirly

"These last four years playing basketball has been the greatest experience of my life. My team and I have done things no other girls team has ever done here at Saxony, and these memories will last a lifetime."

    Ali Galemmo

"I can't wait to tell my children about my seven beautiful sisters I grew up with."

    Ashlynn Collier

"It's been one heck of a ride. I couldn't have done it without these girls. They accepted me into the family right away, and I couldn't be more thankful. I will definitely miss them and Saxony basketball."

    Heather Wills

"Yes, we are a team, but through basketball we became so much more than that. We became a family made of best friends. That's what made it so memorable for me."

  • National Lutheran Schools Week4 News story covered by Eli Bohnert

National Lutheran Schools Week is always an exciting time for over two thousand Lutheran schools across the nation, but at Saxony the week was even more special than ever due to our girls basketball team making it to state. Even though the girls did not win the state championship, they played their hearts out for second place, making Saxony proud and showing the state “the Saxony way.” Back at Saxony, our dress down days for National Lutheran Schools Week included: Monday, Jesus Fan Day, where

people wore assorted shirts displaying Bible verses, Christian messages or their grade school shirts; Tuesday, Sports Fan Day, where people dressed up like their favorite sports player from many different sports; Wednesday, Celebrity Fan Day, where people dressed up like their favorite pop stars; Thursday, Nerd Fan Day (which was canceled due to state basketball); and Friday, Comfy Cozy Day, where some students decided to show off their snazzy outfits and others came to school like they had just hopped out of bed. Throughout the week at Saxony,

students were also given clues on two different scavenger hunts; one being clues to find our daily Secret Crusader, and the other hunt for a mini Martin Luther that was hidden daily around the school for students to find and win a prize. Across Southeast Missouri, our local feeder Lutheran grade schools went all out for National Lutheran Schools Week, too, dressing up and getting involved in many other activities to celebrate. What an amazing week for Lutheran Schools!

    On That Note...

To quote Saxony band director Tyson Wunderlich, “The NCAA stole the term ‘March Madness’ from music departments.” That isn’t too hard to believe since this past month was by far the busiest time of the year for Saxony’s music department. The band and choir voyaged to Bedell Hall at the SEMO River Campus in hopes of attaining the distinguished score of a state ranked “1.” Each group performed two songs for the state competition. The band played “Lost Lady Found” and “St. Florian Choral,” and the choir

sang “O Come Let Us Sing” and “Dona Nobis.” They both performed exceptionally well and both received 2’s. Along with the band and choir, five sophomores (Jade Samanta, Sofia Voss, Nate Hartmann, Emily Cates and Analinda Hyatt) performed piano solos. Each piano soloist performed his/her own song beautifully, and Jade Samanta earned a 1! Then, the final chapter of Saxony’s “March Madness” unfolded as 28 Saxony musicians journeyed to Cape Central to compete. At the district competition, Saxony received a total of

one 4, six 3’s, nine 2’s and five 1’s! Sofia Voss, Nate Hartmann and Jade Samanta received a 1 for their percussion trio, and Tabitha Petzoldt, Alaina Childers, Dani Roscovius and Victoria Kobak all received 1’s for their vocal solos. These seven Crusaders will compete in Columbia at state on April 30. Congratulations to all of the musicians who put in numerous hours of practice so they could perform to the best of their ability. Special thanks to Tyson Wunderlich and Debra Davis for all of their hard work in directing and teaching the band and choir.

  • The past few years have shown a drastic rise in Saxony’s population, including one specific group: pastors’ kids (PKs). Currently, we have five students whose dads are pastors, including Faith Boettcher, daughter of Pastor Boettcher from Immanuel Tilset; Katie Benkendorf, daughter of Pastor Benkendorf from Concordia Frohna; Maleah Shaw, daughter of Pastor Shaw from St. Paul; and Anthony and Victoria Kobak, children of Pastor Kobak from Hanover. Additionally, two of our faculty, Mrs. Beaudean and Ms. Fuchs, are both children of pastors. To find out a little bit about the life of a PK, I questioned Victoria Kobak and Maleah Shaw.

Q: What is it like being a PK?A: (Victoria) His occupation is 24/7. At one moment he plans on attending my extra-curricular activities, the next moment a family member of someone in the church dies and he has to leave. Most kids go to church twice a month, if they are lucky; I go every single day. A: (Maleah) I don’t mind having a pastor as a dad, but sometimes it is difficult because

people assume you should be perfect. Some of the most difficult times are holidays, such as Christmas, because he is always very busy.

Q: Are there any added pressures on PKs?A: (Victoria) I have grown up these past few years folding bulletins, working the church nursery and also sitting in that forbidden front pew. I am expected to be a model citizen. Being in a small family church, my business belongs to everyone. I feel more pressure from other people than my parents. They put high expectations on me, where my parents understand that I am just a normal teenager, stay up late, hangout with my friends, go to parties, and do what every other high schooler wants to do.A: (Maleah) My parents are pretty cool--they let me do the things I want to. The only difference I feel from others is that sometimes my friends assume that I can’t hang out or do something fun with them even though I can.

Q: What are some of the benefits of having your dad be a pastor?

A: (Victoria) With him being the pastor, I am very involved in the church, which means that my family is the church family. I care for all of the children, and every Sunday one of my favorite things that happens is the little kids come running up to me with new surprises. My favorite memory is when a little boy told me that he was going to be a big brother before the family had told anyone else at the church. Also, another benefit is that I always have a theologian on call, which was helpful if there was ever doubt towards my faith, which happened occasionally during the first couple of years of my dad becoming a pastor. He was also always able to help me on religion homework if I didn’t understand something, which was a great thing. As you can see, being a PK isn’t always easy. It has its difficulties and challenges, but it also has high points and wonderful benefits that go along with it. Hopefully, through this article our readers can come to a greater understanding of the life of a PK.

    Spring Season Openers:The Bottom LINE

Our Lady Crusader soccer players are excited to be back out on the field taking part in the sport they all love. With the full starting lineup returning, including college signees Ali Galemmo, Maddie Brune and Heather Wills, the girls are hoping to repeat the astounding season they had last year, with only two losses and a state championship. We wish the best of luck to our girls, along with Coaches Garrett Fritsche and Chris Crawford, as they tackle the season to come.

Whether it’s running, throwing or jumping, the Saxony Lutheran track and field team has talent everywhere, and most of it is returning to hit the track. With sectional qualifiers in multiple events returning for the Crusaders, the verdict is that they aren’t satisfied. They want everyone qualifying for state! After a good season last year, the Crusaders and Coach Cleair are expecting an even better one this year after gaining a lot of great talent.

The 2016 Saxony baseball team has hit the diamond with five returning starters, including college signee Paris Johnson and Coach Sanders. The boys entered a higher class last year and proved worthy, winning the first round of districts and later losing in the second round to state runner-up Scott City. The Crusaders are looking to go even further this year, eyeing the district championship plaque. We want to wish our baseball team good luck on the season ahead of them.

The Saxony golf team, led by Coach Birk, has teed off its 2016 season with an early tie with rival Notre Dame and an 8th of 14 finish in the Notre Dame tournament. Returning a state qualifier in Karsten Short, three other starters, and with a number of great new golfers joining the team this year, the Crusaders hope to come out with another great season. Good luck, ladies and gentlemen, on the rest of your season!

Are you lonely? Do you know someone who is lonely? Are you or someone you know looking for companionship? Well, look no further! Here at Saxony we have a real MAN that is single and ready to mingle. He is none other than the one and only Maxwell Richard Wieser. Max is a 26-year-old former collegiate athlete who graduated from Southeast Missouri State University. Mr. Wieser (as some of his students call him) is now a teacher at Saxony Lutheran High School. Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Oh, he’s a teacher? That’s kind of lame.” However, you could not be more wrong. We would go to a concert or do something active, like go for a run or something!Q: What do you like to do in your free time?A: I like to crochet, play soccer, jam out on my electric guitar, watch The Walking Dead and the list goes on and on.Q: Are you open to having pets?A: Yes. I like dogs a lot, especially cattle dogs.Q: Are you willing to be committed?A: I tend to be committed right away.Q: How tall are you?A: 5’11 ¾". Q: Eye color?A: Majestic blue with a hint of emerald green.Q: How well do you adapt to things around you?A: Pretty well. I don’t stress out about things often.Q: What are two of your bucket list items?A: I want to go to Ireland, and I want to coach a state championship team.Q: What is your “Happy Place?”

A: Either the music on my phone or riding in the Monte Carlo.Q: If you were to win $1 million, what would you do with it?A: I’d train soccer full time and try to make the professional developmental league, I would coach year-round, I would buy a dog, I would buy a Steak & Shake, I would donate some money to Saxony and my church, I would buy Saxony the nicest soccer field $150,000 could buy, and put the rest in the bank. Now, after that quick overview, if you're looking to get to know a little more about Max, you will have to hit him up yourself! He is an overall, well-rounded guy. With a steady career already locked in and ambitious goals for the long life ahead of him, Maxwell Wieser is the absolute perfect man for any woman.

    Saxony's April Birthdays

Eggs-cited about EasterEggs, bunnies and candy galore can only mean one thing: it’s Easter! Maybe the Easter Bunny brought some delicious treats or an Easter egg hunt, or perhaps it was just a day to spend with family. Regardless of what activities took place, Easter has come and gone. But what does that mean for us? What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word Easter? If the question is answered honestly, it may be surprising that the first thought about Easter isn’t always Jesus. It’s too easy to think of eggs and bunnies and not realize the importance of Easter. Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday. Why doesn't that sentence amaze people? If someone came back to life today, it would make national news and people would be totally amazed. Maybe because the words “Jesus rose from the dead” are said so

often, they have begun to lose their meaning. Imagine reading the Easter story for the first time. Jesus dies on a Friday. One hundred percent dead. No heartbeat, no breathing, nothing. His tomb is covered by a gigantic stone and protected by a Roman guard. Then on Sunday morning, Jesus walks out of the tomb. One hundred percent alive. Heart beating, breathing and healthy. However, that’s not even the coolest part. Jesus didn’t just die and rise so that it would be a cool story to tell. When Jesus died and rose again, He defeated sin, death and the devil. He did all this to show how much He loves us. Now we don’t have to die and suffer because Jesus did all of it for us. Let us all reflect back on Easter and realize that it is so much more than eggs and candy.
