The Primary School of St Mary & St Martin
Let your light
shine! THE St MARY & St MARTIN SCHOOL MAGAZINE
Edition 5 Friday 24th April 2020
You are AMAZING! Yes, YOU!
This is a message to ALL our children, parents and staff – WELL DONE for continuing to
SHINE both in our school and the wider community.
Whether you are following the restrictions by staying at home, or going to work as a critical key-worker, or even going the extra-mile by volunteering to support others… what you are doing – now, today and this week - is helping everyone get through.
And it is clear, from the emails and photographs that we are receiving, you are doing it with POSITIVITY & GOOD HUMOUR, & an ability to see the sunshine despite the clouds.
This Magazine Edition is a celebration of all of you, and everything that you are doing to
stay safe and keep each other happy. THANK YOU!
I am extremely proud of the resilience, strength and love that our school community is showing; so take a moment today to remember that YOU ARE AWESOME!

If you are going for a local
walk for your daily
exercise, you might have
noticed some beautiful
rainbow walls around the
village.
It’s lovely to see people
being so creative!
This one has been done by

SMART-ART
Another great art project by the Marshalls; they have decorated their bins to cheer-up the waste collectors on their rounds!
FUN PHOTO CHALLENGE
You may have seen on social media people trying to re-create scenes from well-known films or famous art-work by dressing up at home.
Your mission (should you choose to except it!) is a variation of this… can you create a character or scene from a film, TV show or painting using just your toys and/or bits & pieces you have around your home?!?
For example, have you got a tall wooden pepper mill and a short metal jug which you could turn into CP3O & R2D2 (from Star Wars) by adding a few paper details? GET CREATIVE & SEND US SOME PICS!

Oreo Truffles These easy, no-bake Oreo truffles are fun to make and delicious! Make them as mini desserts, special gifts for friends and family, or as a tasty treat for yourself! You can be creative with the chocolate and toppings; so decorate them however you like! WARNING- these are seriously tasty truffles! Please ask an adult for help. You will need a food processor for best results. Serving- approx.. 15 truffles
Ingredients 25 oreo cookies
4 oz cream cheese softened
1/2 cup chopped white chocolate for dipping
1/2 cup chopped dark or milk chocolate for dipping
assorted sprinkles for decoration
Instructions
Pulse the oreos in a food processor until crushed into small crumbs.
Add the cream cheese and process until you get a big balled clump on one side that
looks very shiny.
Use a medium scoop to portion the mixture into 1 inch balls, then put the truffles on
parchment paper and refrigerate for 15 minutes. I used a melon baller and it does the
job! You may also wish to roll the mixture in your hands a little if needed.
Place each kind of chocolate in small, microwaveable bowls, and microwave in 30
second intervals until melted. You can also melt the chocolate by placing it in a glass
bowl over a pan of hot water. Remember to ask an adult for help.
Dip each truffle in whatever chocolate you desire, then place back onto the parchment
paper. Decorate with sprinkles, if you want.
Wait to enjoy until the chocolate has hardened, either by letting it set at room
temperature or by putting the truffles in the fridge.
Enjoy your truffles! You can even try them with ice cream.
REMEMBER - don’t let the adults eat them all!
The EDWARDS FAMILY have been really busy over easter…
“We made our own family tree using a tree
template. Each family member picked a colour and
dotted finger prints around the tree. This has been
framed and hung on our wall.
We have been doing some recycling with our food
containers…
We decorated our tin cans and used them
for table ping pong and skittles.
Our Jars got decorated at Easter and
turned into candle holders for our drive
way.”
We made our own CHEESE & ONION PASTRIES:
1 pack of ready-rolled puff pastry
1/2 onion
50g butter
100g grated cheese
1tsp of mustard
Milk for sealing.
Melt the butter in a pan & add the onion. Heat and stir until
softened. Mix in the mustard and set aside to cool. Once
cooled add the cheese.
Cut the length of ready rolled pastry down the middle & add
the filling down the centre of each strip. Brush both edges
of pastry with milk and roll into a sausage shape. Slice both
sausage into 8 pieces or 16 for smaller pasties. Brush tops
with milk and sprinkle with cheese. Cook in preheated oven
for about 15 minutes at gas mark 4 or until golden. YUMMY!
ARE YOU LEARNING
A NEW SKILL?
We would love to hear from parents and children who have been learning a new skill while school is closed.
Maybe you have learnt to ride a bike, hula-hoop or speak a new language.
Or maybe your mum has had to learn how to cut your hair…
WELL DONE to all those new home hairdressers
in the school community!
CRAFT IDEA from Mrs Richardson & Mrs Bruce
Mrs Richardson & Mrs Bruce set

EASTER FUN!
It is lovely to see our pupils enjoying some Easter fun…
We hope that you have all had a wonderful Easter time and have enjoyed the amazing weather we have been having!
Thank you for these super photographs from the Shirtliff Family:
This photo makes we wish I had my own sandpit to play in – I can see some great sandcastle building!
#thankourchildren
I am delighted to announce the launch of a new Nottinghamshire campaign which is being supported by Nottinghamshire County Council, Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire Police, Fire & Rescue and local NHS partners, as well as all the schools and child-care setting across the county.
Sir JOHN PEACE (the Lord-Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire and representative of Her Majesty The Queen in our County) has asked us to present certificates to all our pupils on his behalf, saying “The determination, good humour & resilience of our children is well worthy of high praise a recognition”.
Speaking of the campaign, Sir John said, “We are living through a period which is very difficult for children and young people to go outside and play with their friends, to go to parks and to do things which used to be fun. But their efforts are making a difference to so many people’s lives and I just wanted to thank every single one of them, for all that they are doing.”
In a direct message to all children and young people he said, “I just wanted to pay tribute to you and your families for everything you’ve done in this national effort. Do not under-estimate the part you have played. I think you’re amazing and please, please continue to give us more of the same”.
Find out more on his website: www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/council-and-democracy/lord-lieutenant
We will be printing and presenting our certificates to our pupils when we are all back together again, but we wanted you to receive a
‘virtual copy’ today as an attachment to this magazine. WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU ALL!

ARE YOU MISSING THE MAGIC of THEATRE?
Theatres all over the country are closed – but, as the saying goes, the show must go on! There are lots of places to find good theatre productions to watch online at home.
The link below has a good list, which includes details from The National Theatre, Andrew Lloyd Webber, the Royal Shakespeare Company & Royal Opera House to name but a few.
www.whatsonstage.com/london-theatre/news/stage-shows-musicals-opera-free-stream-online_51198.html
N.B. If you want to introduce your children to ‘live’ theatre (via a screen at home) please make sure you choose a production which is aimed at children – not everything will be suitable for them and some
might have age-recommendations just like films and computer games.
BLYTH’s BIG BOOK of GRATITUDE!
WE NEED YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS!
I would like to create a Blyth community BOOK of THANKS, and would like to invite all our readers (children & adults) to contribute a ‘message of thanks’ to someone who has made a difference to them during these challenging times.
It could be a family member, friend, colleague or
stranger; anyone who has done something that has
helped you during the national ‘lock-down’.
It does not matter if you use names or keep it
anonymous; it can be funny or heart-felt; you can
use a computer or do a hand-written version; you
can even illustrate it with pictures if you want!
Each contribution will form a page in this unique book, which we will share with the whole community to help us remember the acts of kindness which are keeping us positive and strong.
HAPPY
BIRTHDAY!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY from all the teachers and pupils to…

RANDOM FUN FACT
from Miss Howarth
Did you know…?
The average size of a polar bear’s paw is
30cm across. That’s as big as a large frying
pan!
Find a pan in your kitchen.
Do you have one that’s the same size?

Q&A: Quick Parent Question… What if I have to leave my children at home unattended?
There is no law about when you can leave your child on their own, but it is an offence to leave them alone if it places them at risk.
As parents, you should use your judgement on how mature your child is before you decide to leave them at home.
It is important to be aware that you can be prosecuted if you leave a child alone ‘in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering or injury to health’.
If you are at all unsure, the NSPCC recommends that children under 12 are rarely mature enough to be left alone for a long period of time; children under 16 should not be left alone overnight; and babies / toddlers & very young children should never be left alone.
Read the government advice on the law on leaving children unattended.
Q&A: Quick Parent Question…
Where can I go to get support to help keep my child safe online?
There is lots of support available to keep your child safe online. Below are some useful links to help parents and carers: Thinkuknow (advice from the National
Crime Agency to stay safe online) Internet matters (support for parents and
carers to keep their children safe online) Parent info (support for parents and carers
to keep their children safe online) LGfL (support for parents and carers to
keep their children safe online) Net-aware (support for parents and carers
from the NSPCC) Let’s Talk About It (support for parents and
carers to keep children safe from online radicalisation)

Prayer
Dear God,
When everything is going wrong I
sometimes wonder why you let
bad things happen. But then
you open my eyes to the majesty
of your world, and I know once
more that you are far greater
than I can imagine, and I believe
once more that your love and
goodness will not be overcome.

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING?
And finally…
Today, I want to end our magazine by spending a moment thinking about FAITH,
another of our core school values.
For some, the idea of faith is linked to religion or a belief in God; for others, faith is what
you might have in yourself or in other people who you trust and admire. People talk about
‘having faith in humanity’ or having faith that ‘it will all be okay in the end’.
Whatever the word FAITH means to you, take a minute or two reflecting on the quotes
below…
When you put it like this, we all need ‘FAITH’ at the moment, however you want to define it.
STAY SAFE – STAY POSITIVE – STAY STRONG
