Greetings Sorors,

Happy Founder’s Day, Happy 6th Anniversary

Chartering Psi Kappa Omega Chapter, Happy

Valentine’s Day, Happy Black History Month, and

Happy Healthy Heart Awareness!

Time waits for no one. Where has the time gone? When you are

enjoying yourself and surrounded by a wonderful sisterhood doing

philanthropic work, you forget how fast time flies. We have had a

very active and productive month.

As part of our monthly activities and in celebration of our

illustrious founders, we attended Lewis Chapel African Methodist

Episcopal Church on February 15, 2015. Psi Kappa Omega made a

monetary donation towards Lewis Chapel African Methodist

Episcopal Church’s scholarship fund. After sisterly fellowship and

devotion at church, we spent the remainder of the day at the home of Soror Vivian Davis, where

we were serve a scrumptious dinner prepared by Sorors Mae Ola Dunklin and Vivian Davis.

The “Go Red Committee” and the “Sisterly Relations Committee” sparked excitement amongst

our chapter by coordinating numerous activities during the month of February. We temporarily

changed our attire from PINK to RED and adorned it with a red dress lapel pin sponsored by

the American Heart Association. We invited our friends, family, and community to join us in the

support of Red Heart Health Awareness by wearing RED on February 6, 2015, and encouraging

them to participate in Healthy Heart Awareness by encouraging healthy recipes and workout tips

to promote healthy heart awareness.

Our Sister Relation Committee combined an evening of dining and exercise. We spent an evening

at Finley’s Restaurant in Battle Creek, Michigan followed by an outing of bowling at Nottke’s. It

was a wonderful time of bonding. We are eagerly looking forward to the next Sister Relation

Activity.

As we enter into the month of March, we prepare for the approaching 84th Great Lakes Regional

Conference in April. We have nine Sorors registered to attend. Don’t forget to check the 2015

Great Lakes Regional Conference packing checklist. Sorors, thanks for the support and

involvement in the February activities.

Sisterly Love,

Soror Mae Ola

Supreme in Service-Black History Month: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Spotlight

Founded: January 15, 1908 at Howard University, Washington, DC

Incorporated: January 29, 1913

Motto: “By Culture and By Merit”

Symbol: Ivy Leaf

Flower: Pink Tea Rose

Colors: Salmon Pink and Apple Green

Official house organ: Ivy Leaf magazine, first published 1921

Confined to what she called “a small circumscribed life” in the segregated and male-dominated milieu that characterized

the early 1900s, Howard University co-ed Ethel Hedgeman dreamed of creating a support network for women with like

minds coming together for mutual uplift, and coalescing their talents and strengths for the benefit of others. In 1908, her

vision crystallized as Alpha Kappa Alpha, the first Negro Greek-letter sorority. Five years later (1913), lead incorporator

Nellie Quander ensured Alpha Kappa Alpha’s perpetuity through incorporation in the District of Columbia.

Together with eight other coeds at the mecca for Negro education, Hedgeman crafted a design that not only fostered

interaction, stimulation, and ethical growth among members; but also provided hope for the masses. From the core

group of nine at Howard, AKA has grown into a force of more than 280,000 collegiate members and alumnae,

constituting more than 980 chapters in 42 states, the District of Columbia, the US Virgin Islands, the Bahamas,

Germany, Africa, South Korea, Japan, Canada, and on the continent of Africa.

Because they believed that Negro college women represented “the highest—more education, more enlightenment, and

more of almost everything that the great mass of Negroes never had" — Hedgeman and her cohorts worked to honor

what she called “an everlasting debt to raise them (Negroes) up and to make them better.” For more than a century, the

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sisterhood has fulfilled that obligation by becoming an indomitable force for good in their

communities, state, nation, and the world.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha program today still reflects the communal consciousness steeped in the AKA tradition and

embodied in AKA’s credo, “To be supreme in service to all mankind.” Cultural awareness and social advocacy marked

Alpha Kappa Alpha’s infancy, but within one year (1914) of acquiring corporate status, AKA had also made its mark on

education, establishing a scholarship award. The programming was a prelude to the thousands of pioneering and

enduring initiatives that eventually defined the Alpha Kappa Alpha brand.

Through the years, Alpha Kappa Alpha has used the Sisterhood as a grand lever to raise the status of African-Americans,

particularly girls and women. AKA has enriched minds and encouraged life-long learning; provided aid for the poor, the

sick, and underserved; initiated social action to advance human and civil rights; worked collaboratively with other groups

to maximize outreach on progressive endeavors; and continually produced leaders to continue its credo of service.

Guided by twenty-nine international presidents from Nellie M. Quander (1913-1919) to Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson

(2014-2018), with reinforcement from a professional headquarters staff since 1949; AKA’s corps of volunteers has

instituted groundbreaking social action initiatives and social service programs that have transformed communities for

the better— continually emitting progress in cities, states, the nation, and the world.

Lane College is a four-year, historically black college

associated with the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church,

located in Jackson, Tennessee, just northeast of the

downtown area. It is primarily a liberal arts institution.

Lane College was founded in 1882 by the Colored

Methodist Episcopal (C.M.E.) Church in America as the

“C.M.E. High School” and named after Methodist Bishop

Isaac Lane who co-founded the school. For $240, Bishop

Lane of what is now known as The Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church, purchased the

first four acres of land to be used for the new school, and they were located in the eastern part of

Jackson, Tennessee. What began as CME High School became Lane Institute in 1884 and then

Lane College in 1896. Planning for the school had begun in 1878, but the school's establishment

was delayed by a yellow fever epidemic in the region in 1878. Its primary purpose was the

education of newly freed slaves, and the original curriculum focused on the preparation of

"teachers and preachers”.

Lane College’s 130th year is marked by enormous growth, but also the upholding of its mission to

serve the disadvantaged. From its humble beginnings, Lane College has been a source of

inspiration for countless numbers of youth and adults throughout this nation. Today, it stands as

a symbol of Christian education for persons of all faiths, creeds, colors, and nationalities.
