    Since 1998, the Presidio Trust has worked to catalyze ideas,partners, and resources rom all sectors to save the Presidioas a public place. In 2013, we reached a key milestoneestablished by Congress and now care or the Presidiowithout annual taxpayer support.

    The achievements o the Presidios rst years as a nationalpark site are shared by manypartners, volunteers, resi-dents and organizations who have located here, donors,and the broad community whose support or this place

    As we celebrate the milestones achieved dur-ing our rst 15 years, we rea rm our mis-sionto trans orm this magni cent place to

    create new bene ts or the public.

    People have always been the soul o the Presidio.With the Armys departure in 1994, the daily activityhere dramatically declined. The buildings were va-cant, the streets quiet, and the vitality diminished.

    Today, we are thrilled to see public li e returning.There is a discernible buzz as a new community

    orms. First-time visitors and longtime neighborsalike are energizing the Presidio.

    Visitors enjoy hikes on the newly expanded trailnetwork and take in views rom the overlooks. Vol-unteers plant seeds at the Presidio Nursery andwelcome the public to history exhibits. At the MainPost, guests are enjoying the parks rst overnightlodging experience at the beauti ully restored Innat the Presidio, and the ormer Burger King i s now apanoramic venue or events and celebrations. Thispast all, thousands o people experienced the re-cently restored Main Parade Ground thanks to O the Grids Picnic at the Presidio. The parks tenantcommunity o ers diverse activities and programsthat are drawing people rom ar and wide.

    We are at a remarkable milestone in thePresidios journey rom post to parka time or refection, thanks, and renewed

    optimism.

    With the start o Fiscal Year 2013, the Presidio Trustushered in a new era o nancial sel -su ciencythat is, an end to direct nancial support romtaxpayersthat adds yet another dimension to thePresidios uniqueness within the pantheon o greatAmerican places.

    As we chronicle the achievements shaped in the15 years since the Trust joined the National ParkService as stewards o this magni cent site, wethank all who have helped save, preserve, andrepurpose the Presidio. Chie among them isCongresswoman Nancy Pelosi, whose commitmentto maintaining the public character o this place

    has been unsurpassed. Under her leadership,a bipartisan coalition came together to cra t aninnovative management and nance model thatwould pair government with the private and non-pro t sectors to advance a public-serving goal.

    the Presidio. Chie among them is Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, whose commitment to maintain- ing the public character o this place has been unsurpassed.

    I attribute much o our collective success to a will-ingness to embrace innovation. The Presidio Trust,itsel an innovation in government, has cultivatedan appreciation or demonstrating new approachesto traditional challenges. These innovations includegreen historic preservation; a distinctive nan-cial and managerial approach to the o ten-vexingchallenge o environmental remediation; a recordo leverage, unique in government, that has at-tracted our private dollars or every taxpayer dol-lar spent; the establishment o a community7,000people strongthat exists within a national park;an approach to stewardship that involves tenants,community volunteers, and a robust cyclic mainte-nance regimen; and an embrace o technologicaladvances that provide new opportunities to reachbeyond the historic Presidio walls to new audienc-es. We value new thinking, while also taking great

    pride in the history and traditions that orm the ba-sis o the place we are here to protect or the public.

    There is much more to preserve and enhance inthe Presidioand this juncture is but a milestone

    on a longer journey. The essence o the Presidioapproachembracing innovation, leveragingpublic resources, and achieving success throughpartnership and community involvementhasbeen proven e ective in generating great publicbene t. The uture o the Presidio as a place o ongoing service to the public has been earned, andnow we turn to new challenges.

    The essence o the Presidioapproachembracing

    innovation, leveraging public resources, andachieving success through partnership and community involvementhas been proven e ective in generating great public bene t.

    Building on the military tradition o leadershipand the Presidios long history as a place o embar-kationwe see an opportunity to develop leadersin service who will apply lessons learned here totheir work in communities around the country andacross the globe.

    Excited by the Presidios relatively recent designa-tion as a national park site, its proximity to a di-verse urban area, and the visibility con erred by itslocation at the Golden Gate, we seek to advancemyriad bene ts to urban youth and showcase cost-e ective, partner-based, inclusive approaches tostewarding public resources.

    At this 15-year juncture, we are able to a rmthat the Presidio, having accomplished mandatesoutlined by Congress, will continue to serve as a

    public place. That act gives us the opportunity towork together to create the next chapter.

    We are travelers on the Presidios journeyamulti-generational trek that extends to be ore

    the landmark event in 1776 that resulted in thebuilding o a Spanish ort, or presidio, on astrategic promontory overlooking the entranceto a great bay. Each successive generation has

    joined i ts orebears, o ering its own contributionto the Presidios legacy by deepening connectionsbetween the place and the society that hasgrown to embrace it. The Presidio has adapted tochanging American aspirations and now stands asa repository o those aspirations and the arti acts

    that bear testimony to them. The Presidio journeycontinueswe are heirs as well as contributors toa legacy that has yet to be ully de ned.

    Over 15 years, the Presidio Trust has addressed undamental challengesin trans orming a historic military post and National Historic LandmarkDistrict into a new American resource: repurposing six million square eet

    o deteriorating buildings, inviting partners rom all sectors to join a new kindo community, growing a revenue stream that sustains the Presidio, upgradingin rastructure long su ering rom de erred maintenance, and preparing buildingsand landscapes or public use through an environmental remediation program.

    The Trust has also established road maps, including an award-winning land useplan, that describe to Congress, neighbors, and the larger community how theongoing revitalization would take shape. The Trust and its key partnersthe NationalPark Service and the non-pro t Golden Gate National Parks Conservancyhave

    continually strengthened their collaboration, resulting in enhancements to theparks trails, open spaces, and visitor experiences.

    THEN + NOWInnovative Environmental Cleanup

    The Environmental Remediation Program has been essential

    to repurposing the Presidios buildings and landscapes orpark uses.

    The e ort began in 1999 with an innovative series ocooperative interagency and unding agreements amongthe U.S. Army, the Trust, the National Park Service,and regulatory agencies. The agreements resulted in amanagement structure that trans erred primary remediationresponsibility to the Presidio Trust and allowed cleanup to becarried out in less time and to a higher standard than wouldhave otherwise been achieved.

    In the past 13 years, 16 land ll sites have been assessed,removed, or capped; 500 ormer uel storage tanks have

    been assessed and remediated; miles o uel distributionpiping have been removed; and lead-based paint in soil hasbeen removed at hundreds o structures. The remediatione ort will be substantially complete in 2014.

    In 2000, the Presidio Trust engaged the community in atwo-year process to create an updated land use strategyto guide decision-making or lands under Trust jurisdiction.The Presidio Trust Management Plan established a vision

    or each o the parks seven districts. The Presidio Trails and Bikeways Master Plan and the Vegetation Management Plan ,both developed with the National Park Service, also laid the

    oundation or enhancing the park.

    An E ective Funding Model

    More than $1.6 billion has been invested in the Presidiosince 1998. Funds have come rom many sourcespublictaxpayer support, philanthropic gi ts, investment in buildingrehabilitation by tenant organizations, and leasing revenue.Every ederal dollar received has been matched by ourdollars o private investment. Today, a vibrant community oorganizations and residents is located here, and thousandso visitors come to learn, recreate, and gain a greaterunderstanding o Presidio history.

    Letterman Digital Arts Center

    In 1998, the Presidio Trust began an e ort to replace the10-story Letterman Army Medical Center, empty since theArmys departure, with a campus more compatible with thePresidios park setting. The Trust partnered with lmmakerGeorge Lucas to create the Letterman Digital Arts Center(LDAC), a home or technological innovation. The campus

    eatures a 17-acre public open space designed by the late,amed landscape architect Lawrence Halprin. Today, LDAC

    contributes signi cantly to the parks nancial oundation.

    Improving In rastructure

    Over the past 15 years, the Trust has substantially upgradedthe parks in rastructure systems (electric, telecom, stormdrain, sanitary sewer, potable water, and roadways), mosto which were developed 50 to 100 years ago. Signi cantimprovements have been made to a dozen neighborhoods aswell as districts such as the Main Post and the Public HealthService District.

    In 1996, Congressestablished the PresidioTrust to govern this unique national park site and toensure its preservation by making it nancially sel - sustaining. And thats exactly what has happened.

    FUTURE FOCUSThe Letterman District

    A new entrance to the park will be created in thenortheast Presidio when the improved approachto the Golden Gate Bridge, known as the PresidioParkway, is completed in 2015.

    Visitors arriving via this gateway will be greetedby more than a dozen historic buildings con-structed in the early 20th century to support theArmys Letterman Hospital. Known as ThornburghRoad, the streetscape eatures views toward

    both the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace o Fine Arts.

    Planning is underway to reconceive this area asa lively, mixed-use region, continuing the revital-ization o the 60-acre historic Letterman District,which also includes the Thoreau Center or Sus-tainability (opened in 1996) and the LettermanDigital Arts Center (opened in 2005).

    Recognizing the Presidios importance in American history, the ederalgovernment took three key actions to ensure it would be orever saved:1) declaring the Presidio a National Historic Landmark District in 1962,

    2) determining in 1972 that the Presidio would join the Golden Gate National

    Recreation Area should the Army depart, and 3) creating the Presidio Trust to careor it in a new way.

    Over the past 15 years, the Presidio Trust has overseen the largest historicpreservation project in the United States, repurposing hundreds o buildings orcontemporary uses and revitalizing historic landscapes rom parade groundsto the orest.

    The Trust, the National Park Service, and the Golden Gate National Parks Conser-vancy have also established public programs to connect visitors to the past andto illustrate the importantand ongoingrole the Presidio has in the li e o ournation.

    THEN + NOWGreen Neighborhood

    The historic Public Health Service District, established more

    than a century ago to care or mariners rom around the world,was restored in 2010 and is now a green neighborhood withhomes, o ce space, a pre-school, a historic printing press,trails, scenic overlooks, and 25 acres o open space.

    Forest City Enterprises led the e ort to trans orm thedistricts centerpiecethe historic hospitalinto a residentialcommunity. The Presidio Trust revitalized the campus as awhole, repurposing the ormer nurses quarters as o cespace, rehabilitating the surgeons homes, and convertingsupport buildings to house a variety o organizations. The Trustalso improved landscapes, built new trails, and completedenvironmental remediation.

    PRESERVING OUR HISTORY

    Making History Meaning ul

    The Trust and its partners host a robust and growing calendar

    o programs that honor the Presidios heritage, includingexhibitions, historic building tours, Memorial and VeteransDay commemorations, and workshops illustrating historicpreservation techniques. Contemporary Historians at the Presidio , a fagship lecture series eaturing nationally knownauthors, uses the Presidios military and cultural history as ajumping-o point to examine topics o ongoing relevance.

    Revitalizing Neighborhoods

    Each o the Presidios 12 historic neighborhoods,

    encompassing 150 historic buildings and nearly 300 housingunits, has been revitalized. Built rom the Civil War throughthe mid-20th century, they represent an array o architecturalstyles. The rehabilitation e ort prepared the buildings andlandscapes or a new generation o residents while preservingthe homes character. Nine Presidio neighborhoods built inmore recent years have also been signi cantly improved.

    Historic buildings and landscapes on the Main Post,traditionally the cultural center o the Presidio, have beenrevived. The iconic Montgomery Street Barracks house theWalt Disney Family Museum (2010 Preservation DesignAward winner) and Futures Without Violence. The PresidioTrusts rehabilitation o its headquarters building earned it a2012 Cali ornia Preservation Foundation Preservation DesignAward. The Main Parade Ground, once used by soldiers ortraining and ceremony, has been restored as a green openspace or public gatherings.

    Archaeological Research

    Archaeological research has been part o nearly every projectat the Presidio and reveals who lived here and how thingschanged over centuries. The program also undertakesresearch with academic partners, hosts educational activities

    or school children, o ers workshops or pro essionalarchaeologists, and is now preparing or long-term excavationsat the historic El Presidio site on the Main Post.

    Restoring Gateways

    The Presidios historic gateways signal that visitors areentering a place o national signi cance. To honor theimportance o these symbols, the Presidio Trust has restoredseveral o these monuments and in 2009 was honored bythe Cali ornia Preservation Foundation or its e orts at theArguello Gate.

    Greening History

    While green building once applied only to new construction,the Presidio has a large and growing inventory o historicstructures rehabilitated using environmentally sensitivetechniques. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design(LEED), an internationally recognized system that certi esthat a building has been designed with concern or water andenergy usage, air quality, and the care ul use o resources,is the st andard or all major Trust preservation projects.

    FUTURE FOCUSHeritage Program at the Presidio

    The Heritage Program at the Presidio is beingunveiled in phases around the Main Post. In2011, a state-o -the-art archaeology lab andcuration acility began operating in a clustero historic buildings on Moraga Avenue. Nextdoor, the O cers Club is undergoing a majorhistoric rehabilitation. In 2014, the structure willonce again take its place as the social hub o thePresidio, welcoming the public or programs,

    eld trips, and even a meal. Interactive gallerieswill illustrate the sweep o Presidio history whilechronicling the stories o those who served, lived,and worked here over generations.

    Year a ter year, the Presidio Trust earns recognition rom the Cali ornia Preservation Foundation through our

    For nearly 150 years, the U.S. Army occupied the lands at the Golden Gate,sometimes altering them signi cantly such as by planting a 300-acre orest and sometimes allowing native species to survive alongside the activities

    o a busy post.

    The Presidios collection o landscapesnative plants, creeks, watersheds, a tidalmarsh, a lake, historic gardens, and parade groundsis impressive, but many re-sources were in decline when the Army le t in 1994.

    To revive the open spaces and the species that depend on them, a close partnershipormed among the Presidio Trust, the National Park Service, and the Golden Gate

    National Parks Conservancy. A Vegetation Management Plan was cra ted to guiderestoration or the next 50 years.

    Today, dozens o sites have been restored across the Presidio, and visitorsand wildli e alike are being nourished in new ways by the parks magni cent naturalenvironment.

    THEN + NOWLandfll to Vibrant Streambed

    A dramatic restoration took place in a busy corner othe Main Post when Land ll 6A became ThompsonReach, an area o habitat named or Dora Thompson,the chie nurse at the Army General Hospital in theearly 20th century.

    For millennia a reshwater creek ran through this area(located across rom todays Presidio YMCA), drainingto the northern marsh. In the 1800s, the site hosteda vegetable garden and a ring range. As LettermanHospital expanded in the 20th century, the creekwas buried in an underground culvert and buildingswere constructed over it. When these buildings weredemolished in the 1970s, the debris was depositedabove the buried creek.

    In 2005, the Presidio Trust environmental remediationprogram removed 77,000 tons o debris. About 400

    eet o creek were brought above ground and 35,000seedlings were planted. The resulting lush valley boasts100 plant species that support extensive birdli e.

    NURTURING OUR ENVIRONMENT

    Habitat Restoration

    Native habitat has increased steadily as a result o morethan 15 years o restoration work. Today, 65 acres o nativevegetation are in active restoration around the Presidio.

    Re orestation

    The Presidio Trust has established a 50-year program to restoreaging cypress and pine groves planted by the U.S. Armybetween 1886 and 1900. About 3,300 trees have been plantedsince 2002. As a result o partnerships with U.C. Davis andMichigan State University, the Trust is implementing innovativemanagement techniques to combat the impacts o wind anddisease on the parks orest canopy.

    Wildli e

    Over the past decade, the Trust has completed wildli einventories on birds, m ammals, reptiles, amphibians,and insect amilies. The studies are accomplishedthrough partnerships with research organizations such asSan Francisco State University and the Cali ornia Academyo Sciences. The in ormation gleaned rom this workhas identi ed a surprising degree o biodiversity in thepark and has enabled park managers to improve habitatrestoration techniques.

    Presidio Nursery

    Founded in 1995, Presidio Nursery produces 65,000 plantseach year or restoration sites around the park. In addition,the nursery grows trees to s upport the re orestation e ort,including Monterey cypress, Coast live oak, Wax myrtle,and Cali ornia buckeye. Long an educational destinationand volunteer hub, the nursery is expanding and improvingits acilities to support uture restoration projects and toconnect visitors to the parks natural heritage. The nursery isa collaborative e ort o the Presidio Trust, the Golden GateNational Parks Conservancy, and the National Park Service.

    Ceremony and Play

    About 40 percent o the parks designed landscapesrom gardens to the historic gol coursehave been

    cared or using 21st century green maintenance strategiesto support the health o the parks wildli e and natural areas.O special note is the reestablishment o the Main ParadeGround as a public gathering space and the creation osmall neighborhood gardens where park residents cultivatefowers and vegetables (see p. 27).

    El Poln Spring

    At the heart o the Presidios Tennessee Hollow Watershedis El Poln Spring. Long a restoration priority due to itsecological value and signi cant Spanish-colonial history, thearea was revitalized in 2012 with the help o the GoldenGate National Parks Conservancy, the National Park Service,generous donors, and thousands o volunteers. Today, thespring is an increasingly popular destination or school groups,birdwatchers, and picnickers.

    FUTURE FOCUSQuartermaster Reach

    New wetland habitat will soon be created at the northend o the Tennessee Hollow Watershed througha collaborative project that includes the Trust, theNational Park Service, and the Golden Gate NationalParks Conservancy, with unding support romSan Francisco Airport, Caltrans, the EnvironmentalProtection Agency, and philanthropic sponsors.

    As the old approach to the Golden Gate Bridge givesway to the new Presidio Parkway, a 1,000- oot stretcho long-buried stream and eight acres o native habitatwill be brought back to li e. Known as QuartermasterReach due to its historic location, the project will llthe gap between the restored Crissy Field Marsh andThompson Reach, providing a contiguous stretcho saltwater, brackish, and reshwater wetlands. Theproject will mark signi cant progress in the springsto bay restoration vision and serve as an outdoorclassroom or children throughout the region.

    The character o the Presidio was once de ned by military amily li e. Whenthe post became a park, a di erent kind o community took shape withinthe gates.

    As the Trust rehabilitated residential neighborhoods, 3,000 people moved intothe parks 1,200 homes. A new generation o residents has chosen to live here,appreciating the parks history and beauty as well as the opportunity to supportits preservation.

    A community o organizations has also ormed within buildings the Army onceused as o ces, airplane hangars, and warehouses. This collection o non-pro ts,

    or-pro ts, restaurants, recreational organizations, and cultural destinations hasbrought vast energy and resources to the making o this place. In total, about

    4,000 people come to work here each day, and there are activities or visitors toenjoy that would have been unimaginable just a ew years ago.

    The three single- amily homes and eight duplexes along Wyman

    Avenue in the historic Public Health Service District (see p. 17)were once occupied by physicians and their amilies. When thearea was abandoned ollowing the closure o the hospital in the1980s, the homes ell into disrepair.

    In 2010, the elegant units were revitalized. Wyman Avenueis now part o a green neighborhood recognized by theU.S. Green Building Councils Leadership in Energy andEnvironmental Design (LEED) Neighborhood Developmentprogram. The rating refects the neighborhoods proximity totransit and services, as well as the environmentally sensitivepractices used to rehabilitate the structures.

    Wyman Avenue was the last o the Presidios 21 neighbor-hoods to be repaired, completing an intensive 12 years opreservation work.

    In 2005, the Trust built a Transit Center on the MainPost and established a ree shuttle system or parkvisitors, residents, and employees. MUNI and GoldenGate Transit continue to provide important links toSan Francisco and the region, as do 14 miles o improvedregional bike routes.

    The Presidio Community Y strives to create community here in the park and to bring SanFranciscos diverse community into the Presidio through our extensive outreach throughout thecity.     The Presidios rst organic community garden wascreated at Fort Scott in 1996 to provide a place orpark residents to cultivate fowers, ruits, and vege-tables in the company o their neighbors. Historicalphotos indicate that a garden and greenhouse hadbeen at this location, tucked behind the o cershomes on Kobbe Avenue, since the early 1900s. Thesite may have served as a victory garden duringWorld War II.

    The popularity o the garden has inspired thePresidio Trust to establish ve additional organiccommunity gardens in the parks residential neigh-borhoods. Many more are coming, including oursmall gardens at Baker Beach, the Presidios largestresidential neighborhood.

    When the Presidio was de ender o the gate, the Army designed the sitearound its responsibility to protect the nation. Over the past 15 years,the Trust and its partners have reoriented the Presidios mission and

    physical setting to welcome the public.

    With the National Park Service and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy,the Trust is creating a visitor in rastructuretrails, restrooms, and new visitorportalsthat provide access to the parks history, vistas, and open spaces.

    Programs that reveal the Presidios signi cance, or simply make discoverymore un, occur nearly every day. The welcoming character o the park is alsoshaped by diverse tenants that invite visitors to enjoy play, exercise, a great meal,or a cultural experience.

    Outdoor recreational amenities have been built or greatlyenhanced over the past 15 years. Today, the Presidio

    eatures our playing elds, miles o trails and bikeways, anexpanded Rob Hill Campground, and open spaces such asthe Main Parade Ground.

    Presidio Gol Course

    Presidio Gol Course was opened to the public a ter thePresidio joined the park system, and a new clubhouse wasconstructed in 1999. Today, 60,000 rounds are played eachyear, and numerous tournaments and public events are held.

    Art in the Park

    Place-based art has become a popular way or visitors to seeand understand the Presidios outdoors. A partnership with thenon-pro t FOR-SITE Foundation has resulted in the creationo two prominent sculptures by Andy Goldsworthy Spire andWood Line as well as a year-long exhibition entitled Presidio Habitats , which welcomed 11,000 visitors to experience artinspired by the Presidios birds, plants, and trees.

    Staying and Eating

    The Presidio now o ers overnight accommodations at theInn at the Presidio, opened in 2012. The park also eatures aroster o restaurants and ca es and will expand ood optionsin coming years.

    The Presidio was ounded to serve national needs and priorities. From 1846through the Cold War, the post played a supporting role in every major U.S.Army endeavor. The Presidio also helped in times o local need, providing

    assistance ollowing the Great Earthquake o 1906 when the Main Post hosted

    re ugee encampments.

    Over the past 15 years, a new tradition o service has developed. Volunteersnow answer the call to help care or the Presidio. Buildings and landscapes areused or teaching and learning, and many organizations locate here to work withlike-minded colleagues to address contemporary global challenges. The dailyactivities have evolved, but the core mission o service endures.

    THEN + NOWAmeriCorps at the Presidio

    In 1993, Congress created the Corporation or Nationaland Community Service and launched AmeriCorps NCCC,which engages young Americans in intensive service tomeet the countrys needs in education, public sa ety, health,and the environment.

    Since 2010, the Trust has hosted six AmeriCorps teams.Participants live and serve in the Presidio or six- to eight-weektours, building community gardens, caring or the orest,completing habitat restoration e orts, assisting withlandscape beauti cation projects, and supporting communityevents such as Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and NationalTrails Day. To date, members have contributed more than14,000 hours o service. The Trust hopes to strengthen thispartnership in coming years.

    Learning

    Environmental education programs s ponsored by the Trust,the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, and theNational Park Service have introduced thousands o youthto San Franciscos ecology. The new archaeology lab on theMain Post will soon allow the Presidio archaeology programto expand beyond the 1,500 students it now serves eachyear, and the adjacent O cers Club will o er an array oeducational Heritage Programs.

    Volunteering

    Volunteers rst began supporting habitat restorationprojects at the Presidio in the mid-1990s. Since that timethe e ort has grown dramatically, and volunteers now ass istarchaeologists, clear trails, and welcome visitors as docents.In 2012, 6,765 volunteers recorded 65,056 hours o work.The Presidio ranks th among all national parks in volunteerparticipation. The volunteer program is operated by theGolden Gate National Parks Conservancy, the Presidio Trust,and the National Park Service.

    Camping at the Presidio

    The Camping at the Presidio program, ounded in 2007 bythe Trust, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, theNational Park Ser vice, and Bay Area Wilderness Training,provides children and youth who traditionally have not visitednational parks with an overnight outdoor adventure. In its sixyears o operation, nearly 800 adults have been trained tolead youth camping trips, and 11,000 kids have enjoyed aninspirational night in the wilderness. Rob Hill Campground wasexpanded and improved in 2010 with generous support romthe Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund.

    Knowledge Sharing

    In any given year, a variety o pro essionals and studentscome to the Presidio to learn how the Trusts work romhistoric preservation to innovative managementmight haveapplication in other communities. The park has hosted visits

    rom local, national, and international organizations, includingthe Urban Land Institute, the Sydney Harbor Federation Trust,Governors Island, and Fort Monroe.

    Swords to Plowshares

    For more than a decade the non-pro t organization Swordsto Plowshares has operated a Veterans Academy at thePresidio. The program o ers permanent supportive housingand comprehensive care to more than 100 ormerly homelessveterans with disabilities.     Overlooking the Golden Gate, Fort Win eld Scottwas once home to the U.S. Armys Coast ArtilleryCorps, which protected our nations coastline.Building on this legacy o service, the PresidioTrust is repurposing Fort Scott or a new publicmission: home to the National Center or Serviceand Innovative Leadership.

    The Center is devoted to developing leaders bet-

    ter prepared to solve the most critical social chal-lenges o the 21st century. The Centers approachwill harness the wisdom and best practices o thenations great traditions o service, including vol-unteerism, military service, political engagement,philanthropy, corporate social responsibility, so-cial entrepreneurship, and national service. TheCenter and its partners rom industry, government,the social sector, and higher education will devel-op learning, convening, and research initiatives or

    emerging leaders rom across the country.

    Fort Scotts campus o historic Mission-revivalstyle barracks will eventually house classroomand con erence spaces, o ces and distance tech-nologies, dining, and lodging. The headquartersbuilding was rehabilitated in 2012, and the rsto the barracks buildings will be completed insummer 2013. The e ort recently marked the in-auguration o the Fort Scott Council, an advisorygroup o national leaders, and the hiring o theCenters rst director.

    3. David H. Grubb , vice-chair, chaired the Presidio Trustboard o directors rom December 2003 until July 2009

    and was reappointed to the Trust board by President BarackObama in 2010. He served on the Golden Gate NationalParks Conservancy board o trustees rom 1990 to 2000,where he oversaw the e ort to restore Crissy Field as chairo the projects committee. Mr. Grubb joined Swinerton, Inc.,a San Francisco-based general construction rm, in 1964 asa project engineer. He became the companys president in1988 and its chairman in 1996. He currently serves on theboard o directors or Immaculate Conception Academyand Lucile Packard Childrens Hospital. He has also servedon several cultural and business community committeesand has o ered his support to a number o charitableorganizations, serving on the boards o Saint PatricksSeminary, the Meadow Club, San Domenico School, andSan Francisco Zoological Society. He holds a bachelor o science degree rom Princeton University and a master o science degree rom Stan ord University.

    4. William R. Hambrecht is the ounder o the San Francisco-based nancial services rm WR Hambrecht + Co. Mr.Hambrecht is widely credited with creating the OpenIPO,which made the initial public o ering process moreequitable. Prior to WR Hambrecht + Co, he co- ounded

    Hambrecht & Quist, which specialized in investing in SiliconValley companies. Mr. Hambrecht has served as a director
