Volume 31, Number 10-1 October 2012, Issue 1 of 2 Despite it being the Labor Day weekend, the Trailblazers had a great September turnout. It may have been the economy keeping people home or fuel prices keeping people from long trips. Most likely, however, it was because Barry Clasper was calling. He called his usual great dance, making it fun for everyone at all sessions, yet challenging to keep everyone ever -alert. It is always nice to see Pam out dancing, having fun with the dancers, and checking Barry’s choreography. Everyone had a great time! It is that time of year again dues. We need to have our membership roster updated and insurance fees paid for very shortly. There is a sense of urgency due to the fact that A Square D is having problems filling elected positions. There is the possibility that they will close. Your prompt payment at the next dance or by mail would be welcomed by our Treasurer, Sam Mehlman. I am saddened to hear about the passing of Jack Frickey. He has always supported Trailblazers even from afar. It’s hard to hear about former members dropping out of dancing due to age and health. It’s even harder when you hear of somebody passing. I wish there were some way to slow this downward slide. The second week in September began our bi-annual migration to Maui. My daily routine of swimming and water exercises at 8:00 each morning got me down to 190 pounds and feeling buff. Carolyn had not been feeling well, and I got what she had a nagging cough and fever. Then, suddenly I was hit by the gout not in a big toe like before, but the whole ankles in both feet. Talk about immobile! I could only move from the couch to the bed. This has gone on for a week. Finally, with prescriptions called in by my doctor, I am back to hobbling around. The bad part If I had been on a one- or two-week vacation, it would have been a total bust. The good part I had two good weeks, and I can still look forward to five more weeks. October’s dance promises to be a wild one. Riding in from Texas will be Darryl Lipscomb. You can be assured of a rip-snortin’ time with plenty of great dancing. See you on the dance floor. Despite it being the Labor Day weekend, the Trailblazers had a great September turnout. It may have been the economy keeping people home or fuel prices keeping people from long trips. Most likely, however, it was because Barry Clasper was calling. He called his usual great dance, making it fun for everyone at all sessions, yet challenging to keep everyone ever-alert. It is that time of year again – dues. Darryl Lipscomb — Our October Caller

Darryl Lipscomb began square dancing at the age of 12, started

calling at the age of 14, and made calling his full time profession in

1978. He was raised dancing to C.O. Guest and Ray Smith who

both called for the clubs to which his parents were members. Both

were very instrumental in encouraging and helping Darryl.

Darryl conducts a winter program in Mission, Texas for all

the “Winter Texans” who choose to spend their winters in the

"Tropics" of the Rio Grande Valley.

He calls a full range of programs, beginners through C3B, and is also one of the

staff callers for the "Worlds largest beginner class", and the "South Texas Jamboree" in

McAllen, Texas.

During the summer months, he travels extensively throughout the United States

and foreign countries, calling many festivals, weekends, and week-long institutes.

Among his favorites are Kirkwood Lodge where no dancing or calling career is

complete until you've attended a week at this historical square dance destination!

When dancing to Darryl you are assured of smooth flowing, innovative, and

exciting choreography. He enjoys calling all levels of square dancing equally well.

However, he admits working with beginners is especially exciting!

Darryl has recorded on several different square dance record labels and is

currently a "Staff Caller" for Global Music Productions.

He is also a member of CALLERLAB.

Coming from the land of our Wonderful Neighbors to the North . . . Barry & Pam Clasper

Barry’s Quotes I’ve got you trained now. Good job back there. I said it. I’ll have to live with it. John is muttering into his tape recorder. I think I’ll see that in the newsletter. Wait a minute! I took a course. I know how to fix that. That was the best $20 I ever spent. That’s what is called a cheap get-out. I can’t remember what I was going to do now. And you were so close! I’m not sure what’s going on back there, but it’s not what I’m calling. We need a video of that Left Fan the Top. If you liked that, you’re gonna love this. Side couples … because I don’t trust the Head couples. That was close! Screwed up my own get-out. Left Fan the Top. That one’s for Mike. You’re a girl John. Where else would I ever hear this! I didn’t believe it either. I’ll play it again. Did you manage to repair that? Double Cross. That’s like a Triple Cross, but less. Your styling needs work. Oh! You guys were faking, so I guess we should go back. We still need somebody in the front square.

I know it’s tough because John is in it. Promenade does have a defined direction, you know. Don’t look at me that way. The rest of your square got it. So the girls are just out there . . . How come all the people that said yes aren’t in the same square?

Thanks for taking care of your renewal as soon as feasible

so our insurance roster can be submitted in a timely manner.

Pay at October or

November dance

or . . .

. . . mail your check (payable to Trailblazers) to:

Sam Mehlman, 4045 Globe Ave Culver City, CA 90230

Thanks Pam for bringing along such a talented and

entertaining caller.

Jack Frickey. It is with much sadness that we send

this email letting you know that Jack Frickey passed away peacefully at home at about 7:15 pm tonight, Fri-day, September 21. Next week would have been his 69th birthday. Cheryl said, “It is a blessing for him as he was non-responsive, but it is hard for everyone else.” I know we speak for all that knew Jack when we say he was definitely “one of the good guys” and will surely be missed by all of us.
