“And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children

to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.” (Malachi 4:6 KJV)

“There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in thy land:

the number of thy days I will fulfil.” (Exodus 23:26 KJV)

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it and

indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words.” (Proverbs 18:21 AMP)

There is an interesng scripture in the book of Isaiah that communicates, perhaps most clearly, God's intenon

for all of humanity to live to fulfill their days, more so His children. The scripture says “No more babies dying in

the cradle, or old people who don't enjoy a full lifeme; One-hundredth birthdays will be considered normal—

anything less will seem like a cheat.” (Isaiah 65:20 MSG). While this verse calls us to look ahead to the new

heavens and new earth, it echoes very clearly God's intenon for humanity all along — that God is determined

to keep all of His heritage to the end of their days; their lives are not supposed to last for less than a hundred

years.

However, the Word of God also tells us, even repeatedly, that a power common to all humans which is capable

of overthrowing God's plans and purposes in the experience of each and every human. This power is in our

TONGUE. We have established that parents are in some sort of partnership with God when it comes to raising

children; we (parents) are the quiver that carry the “arrows of God” (children) — in the imagery of Psalm 127.

We could either sharpen these arrows and make them ready to be released to hit their targets, or we could

make them so blunt and ineffecve by the use of our most potent and dangerous weapon: the tongue. King

Solomon tells us that the POWER to set the course of desny of God's heritage is in the tongue, whether unto

LIFE or unto DEATH. It goes further to show us that those who love and indulge the tongue whether posively or

negavely will EAT its fruit and bear the CONSEQUENCES of their words. That concept of consequences from

the wrong use of our tongue is something we should take seriously. I believe that the subtle weapon with which

the devil is short-circuing the desny of many young people is through the careless use of the tongue by their

parents and caregivers somemes in the name of correcng their wrong doing.

“Even so the tongue is a lile member, and boasteth great things.

Behold, how great a maer a lile fire kindleth!” (James 3:5 KJV)

James describes our tongue as being a LITTLE MEMBER of our body, but also highlights how it BOASTS great

things. It can ignite a fire that could burn for a lifeme! You can recall the story of Jabez whose mother simply

named him Jabez — sorrow — and the consequence of that negave pronouncement followed him unl he

was able to turn that terrible misfortune around by crying to the God of Israel. No one knows the age of Jabez

when he made that life transforming prayer, but it is safe to assume he had reached the age of accountability,

which in most civil sociees would be eighteen years. Imagine carrying a terrible misfortune around for that

long! And we have reasons to imagine the possibility that Jabez wasn't the only one that suffered such tongue-

blow from his mother for he was declared to be “the most honorable amongst his brothers”. Perhaps his

siblings also bore the consequences of negave pronouncement from their mother. And one can only wonder

where the father of these children is in the whole narrave. This should prompt us to take a quick inventory of

your children's lives; what have you contributed to it with your use of tongue?

“Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.

Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned

about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.” (James 3:3-4 KJV)

James also likened the tongue to the bits we put in the mouth of horses so that we can harness the horse's

power to accomplish our desire. He likewise compared it to the simple rudder that controls a big ship and tells it

where to go. These illustraons tell us that we have the power to give direcon to our lives and our children's

lives by a proper use of our tongue. Unfortunately, while we as humans have been able to tame beasts, birds,

and even serpents, we sll struggle with taming the tongue. It is defined as an “UNRULY EVIL full of deadly

poison”. According to James 3:10-12, the tongue is like a source capable of two possibilies — BLESSING or

CURSING; SWEET or BITTER WATER; FIG or WILD OLIVE BERRIES; and finally, SALT or FRESH WATER. No source

can do both at the same me. The queson therefore is “which dimension of the tongue's capabilies are you

making to bear upon your children's desnies?”

A CASE STUDY OF JACOB'S PRONOUNCEMENTS UPON HIS CHILDREN

James 3:2 acknowledges that while it is possible to stumble in many things, whoever can keep from stumbling

in his/her use of the tongue (to declare words) is a perfect individual, capable of bridling the whole body. Such a

person will be in a good posion to speak into the future of his children. A story that highlights this is in Genesis

49.

“And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall

befall you in the last days. Gather yourselves together, and hear, ye sons of Jacob; and hearken unto

Israel your father. Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the

excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power: Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou

wentest up to thy father's bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch. Simeon and Levi are

brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitaons. O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto

their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they slew a man, and in their selfwill

they digged down a wall. Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will

divide them in Jacob, and scaer them in Israel.” (Genesis 49:1-7KJV)

By the USE OF HIS TONGUE, he sowed seed of words into the future of these children. What insights can we

glean from what this patriarch of faith did to His children?

1. JACOB never got over the offense of his first son. As a result, he pronounced a terrible curse upon Ruben from

which he never recovered for the rest of his life. He became a servant to his brethren. Are you sll hurt about

what your child did to you that makes you want to silently curse at him or her?

2. JACOB never fully understood the personalies of his children, one could argue. As such, his misconstrued

percepon about their acons resulted in some of them being nailed with a curse. Do you know your child well?

3. JACOB was never a good example for his children. He showed a lot of favorism and as such his children

revolted. Why curse them for following some of his errac behaviors? Are you a good example to your children?

4. JACOB's imperfect relaonship with the mothers of these kids surely took its toll on the children's disposion

while growing up. How well are you treang your wife?

5. JACOB was never a good visionary for his family. Even if he had the premonion of what the future held for his

kids, he could have prayed about it like he did when he wrestled with an angel of the Lord concerning his own

desny. Rather, he made some negave pronouncements on some of his own children.

6. JACOB sidetracked his wives input in speaking into the future of his children. We are unable to determine the

reacon of those mothers who were sll alive when these pronouncements were being made on their

children. l expected a massive revolt from the mothers, but they were absent, and as the saying goes, “silence

means consent”. Are you looking out for your children as a mother?

7. JACOB perhaps didn't realize that as a father, he was represenng God. He failed in this regard as well

because God will never curse His children. Instead, He chooses to deal mercifully with us. Parents, please be

merciful on your children. Are you dealing with your children with mercy?

CALL TO ACTION

How well are you using your tongue? What lessons have you learnt from Jacob's pronouncements on his

children? Take a good inventory of your children's lives and see what your tongue has done. And where

necessary, undo them.

WORDS TO PONDER ON FOR THE WEEK:

“REFRAIN HIS TONGUE FROM EVIL”

“For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from

evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:” (1 Peter 3:10 KJV)

Here is a clearly stated condion for those who desire to see their children living

out good days. Use your tongue wisely.

Shalom.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, have mercy on me in any way that I might have sown seeds of negavity into the future of my sons.

2. Lord, as from today, help me to connually unleash the power of blessing in my tongue upon my children in

the name of Jesus.
