Everyone has heard that old adage “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.”

Too often we find ourselves running so fast that we do not take the time to stop and look at new opportunities—such as meeting new people.

There are many times that I wish I had taken a moment to meet with a representative who had reached out, excited to show me their new product. But, too often, I could not find a break (or muster the energy to make one) in my busy schedule. So, an opportunity that could have led to benefits beyond the obvious – learning about a new, potentially important product – was missed.

You never know what you are going to need until you cannot find it. This includes physical objects, such as envelopes, as well as abstract items like information or a good person for project collaboration. 4 more on

When you’re unable to quickly locate the right object/item/person, it can lead to a lot of aggravation, headaches, and mismanaged hours.

The internet has made it easier for us to research and find things that will fulfill our needs. We can even keep a social cyber-pulse through social media channels such as LinkedIN and Facebook. However, will that ever really replace the value of meeting someone face-to-face? The opportunity to interact in the real world, getting a more tangible experience about what someone can offer as an industry professional?

No one has the ability to reach high levels of success without the help of others. Learning to utilize the expertise, connections, and friendly assistance of others has been a key factor in achieving goals throughout recorded history. But, nobody said it was easy!

For the privileged few, networking comes naturally, is seen as fun and sometimes even a contest. For most of us, stepping into a room full of strangers or semi-strangers and striking up a conversation is at best a challenge and sometimes just plain work.

The greatest factor in determining your success in networking is a sincere appreciation of the other people in the room. If you are looking for the good in others and approaching every conversation with interest and care, then you’ll always meet amazing people because you are open to experiencing their best qualities.

I encourage you to challenge yourself. Get out of your comfort zone – grow your network and social skills.

Come to our next TNLA Region IV meeting, boldly introduce yourself to at least one of our members, and have a real, face-to-face conversation.

Truly listen and interact—see what you can learn, start to build a new relationship,

Raised in rural Graham, Texas, I earned a respect for plants, animals, and all other living things. participated in 4-H for 10 years and regularly spent time outdoors hiking and gardening. Translating this respect into higher education, I earned a bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture at Texas A&M University in 2011 and

studied abroad for a semester in Germany. I held a summer internship for a wholesale grower and have been working in the wholesale nursery industry ever since. Although I do love design, I appreciate the time my career allows me to be outdoors and have daily contact with beautiful plant material. Outside of my full-time purchasing and sales position at OakStreet Wholesale Nursery, I can be found hiking in Big Bend National Park, hunting for native Texas plants, or designing floral arrangements.

More information on my adventures and designs can be found here: www.traviswardhorticulture.com

Holiday Identity Thieves By: Faye Bishop

Beware Of

Online Membership Programs - Scammers will use "rewards or discounts" pop-up windows under the guise of mainstream companies to get people to sign up with the scammer's company and unknowingly give personal or financial information. No matter how great the offer or specials you should always be skeptical of "rewards or discounts" pop-ups. If you do click on one, make sure to read the fine print and subsequently check your

credit card statement regularly.

Smishing: Authorities say these are automated text messages that ask for personal information. Be sure to always check the call-back number on Google to make sure it is legitimate.

Fake Charities: The holidays bring out the best in most people and our thoughts turn to helping out those less fortunate. That's why you will find so many appeals for the neediest cases out there. Make sure the appeal is real. Call the main office of any non-profit organization that approaches you to make sure they actually have one. Go online and poke around. Check with Charity Navigator or the Office of the Attorney General in your state. Make sure you are actually making a difference, rather than just making some fraudster a little richer.

The arrival of the holiday season leaves open numerous

opportunities for scam artists. It is because this time of year is when when we are most distracted and preoccupied.

There is always somebody looking to separate you from your money and the last thing anyone needs in a tough economy such as this one is to lose their money and identity to a criminal. Below are a few types of scams you should be on the look out for.

Small and Frequent Charges: In these cases, scammers will "test" victims by making small charges on their credit card to see if they are caught. If they go undetected, the scammer will later make larger and larger charges. To be safe, be sure to review your bank statement monthly, and call the company if you don't recognize any charges.

Skimmers: Scammers will capture keypad and card information when consumers input their PIN number at ATMs, gas stations, restaurants, etc. They can then use this to extract money from victims' accounts. To avoid becoming a victim, always select the "credit" option at retailers, gas stations, and restaurants, even if you are using a debit card. By selecting "credit," you do not have to input your PIN and you are less liable for fraud. With ATMs, try to use those at your bank whenever possible.

Counterfeit Products: Scammers will sell counterfeit electronics with faulty wiring and fuses or dangerous chemicals. To be safe, verify that the product is real by checking

the package for any misspellings or otherwise abnormal qualities.

We can't forget about the most common scam which is done through email. If someone contacts you via email telling you that a relative or dear friend has left you some holiday money but that in order for you to receive it you must send them

money in a gift card to get it. Tell them to go screw themselves! It's a scam!

One last thing to keep in mind, public hotspot Wi-Fi is never, ever private. Be mindful of this during use.
