“In the bulb there is a flower, in the seed an apple tree, in cocoons a hidden promise butterflies will soon be free, in the cold and snow of winter lies a spring that waits to be, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.” I love that hymn. It speaks of hope, potential, a future filled with good things… all lying still, waiting to be nourished into new life. That’s the way the church works. All the great ministries we have here at First United Methodist Church began with the seed of an inspired thought, planted in the soil of a loving community of faith, and nourished into life through the prayers and gifts of God’s people. Somebody said, “W e oughta.” Somebody else said, “Let’s!” The community of faith said, “How can we help?” And lives were transformed and futures reshaped for Jesus Christ. Here is an example: Last year, somebody said We oughta” make confirmation a special ministry to our youth again in 2018. Somebody else said, “Let’s!” And the church family said, “How can we help?” The answer was, “Turn in an “estimate of giving” card so we will know if we will have the resources for this and other ministries.” You and your brothers and sisters of this church family responded! As a result I had the privilege of baptizing four youth last Sunday! Many more will confirm their baptisms later this year when our confirmation ministry wraps up. There is little in this world that is more significant, more meaningful, or more joyous than baptizing a youth. “In the bulb there is a

flower, in the seed an

apple tree, in cocoons a

hidden promise butterflies

will soon be free, in the

cold and snow of winter

lies a spring that waits to

be, unrevealed until its

season, something God

alone can see.”

I love that hymn. It speaks

of hope, potential, a future

filled with good things…

all lying still, waiting to be

nourished into new life.

That’s the way the church

works. All the great

ministries we have here at

First United Methodist

Church began with the

seed of an inspired

thought, planted in the soil

of a loving community of

faith, and nourished into

life through the prayers

and gifts of God’s people.

Somebody said, “We

oughta.”

Somebody else said,

“Let’s!”

The community of

faith said, “How can

we help?”

And lives were

transformed and futures

reshaped for Jesus Christ.

Here is an example:

Last year, somebody said

“We oughta” make

confirmation a special

ministry to our youth again

in 2018. Somebody else

said, “Let’s!” And the

church family said, “How

can we help?”

The answer was, “Turn in

an “estimate of giving”

card so we will know if we

will have the resources for

this and other ministries.”

You and your brothers and

sisters of this church

family responded! As a

result I had the privilege of

baptizing four youth last

Sunday! Many more will

confirm their baptisms

later this year when

our confirmation ministry

wraps up.

There is little in this world

that is more significant,

more meaningful, or more

joyous than baptizing a

youth.

hometown of Lake Jackson, TX where he was a member of this church!

Join us as we step back in time to 1943, the year

Lake Jackson began and our church was established.

There will be a BBQ lunch in Wesley Hall immediately following worship services.

Coffee, tea, lemonade and water will be provided.

Please bring a side dish and/or a dessert to share.

Our children have

been learning about

each other’s families

and ways that our own

families resemble

families from the Bible.

As we continue this fall

with our unit on

‘Family’, we will dis-

cover how Jesus built a

family of disciples.

We’ll also see how

Jesus made a point to

include women and

children into the King-

dom, which contrasted

with typical religious

practices during that

time. Lastly, we will

read about some

particular relationships

in the Bible; Jacob and

Esau, Moses and his

sister and Hannah and

Samuel.

Our goals this month

are to understand what

it means to be a

disciple in God’s family;

how our speech and

actions show others

what it means to be a

Child of God. Also, the

way we treat each

other reflects our

relationship with Christ.

Much Love,

Lindsay Pulido

Youth Council - 2018 to 2019 One of our First Youth goals is the opportunity for leadership roles. Our youth

council provides that opportunity to the students.

YOUTH COUNCIL PRESIDENT

Our president for the upcoming year is 11th

grader, Michael Lee. Michael has been a

church member for 12 years. He was

confirmed in 2014 and has always been active

in children’s ministry, Submerge and youth

ministry. Michael is a member of Boy Scout

Troop 325, has been active in HOSA and

student council at Brazoswood High School

and also plays varsity tennis.

Michael likes the youth group “because of the friendly atmosphere and that it

seems like people can open up their shell when they're at youth group.”

Michael wanted to be president so he could help with devotionals and be a

role model to the younger people in the group.

43 ladies attended the Seaside

Escape Women’s Retreat in

Galveston on September 28 & 29.

When asked what they enjoyed most,

here are a few of the answers given by those who attended:

Spending time in fellowship to get to know one another better

Great music, theme and content of the program

Spending some much needed quiet time with God helped me to

feel refreshed

Hearing how others have experienced God in their lives

Casual atmosphere, thought-provoking exercises, and

wonderful sharing time with other ladies in small groups; any

time women share their hearts with others, they grow

Spending time, “away from the world”, with old friends and

having the opportunity to make new ones

For those ladies who were unable to attend this

year, you were missed and we hope you will make

plans to join us next time!

Society of St. Stephen is short

on funds. In August, we helped

20 clients with a total of

$3,120. The average aid given

to each client was $156. We

are closing one week per month and we are

taking only 15 calls per week, rather than

our normal 21, due to our low level of

funding. Later this year, we will once again

be selling Christmas wreaths as our major

fundraiser.

The Society of St. Stephen is a group of people

from the First United Methodist Church,

Chapelwood United Methodist Church, and

Christ Lutheran Church who are committed to

You and I made possible this

amazing moment, in part, because

we came forward with our

estimates of giving last October.

This month our emphasis will be

on “The Power of a Seed”. We’ll

look at how seeds of faith, hope,

and love were planted in our lives,

and how we, as a church family,

are continuing to plant these seeds

in the lives of others. On Sundays,

we’ll hear testimonies about the

difference our church is making in

our community and in the world.

And then on Sunday, October

28th, we will gather together at

the altar to plant seeds of faith,

hope, and love through the

ministries that God has entrusted

(SEED continued from page 1) to us. We will do this, in part,

through our “estimate of giving”

cards.

You will soon receive an

“estimate of giving” card, either

at church or in the mail. I cannot

emphasize enough the importance

of your estimate of giving.

Without it, we literally will not

plant as many seeds of faith, hope,

and love as we are called to plant.

With your card, however, we will

be able to fulfill our calling to

minister to the children, youth,

and adults in our church family,

our community and our world.

Please prayerfully complete your

card and bring it with you to

worship on Sunday, October 28th.

Troop 325 is celebrating 75 years, the first Scout troop in Lake Jackson. This listing (right) enumerates the Eagles Scouts over the years. Troop 352 Eagles are included because for 20 years this troop helped hold Troop 325 to less than 100 scouts for logistics reasons. The original troop, number 25, met in the Community House, which was located in the duplexes, in the fire station, in the scout house which was next to the bridge of Yaupon on the west side....The Winn's house was the site, and in 1951 started meeting at the First Methodist Church on Azalea.

Living up to a code of honor and duty to family, country and God is at the core of the Scouts, said Scout-master Joe Moreno.

On Saturday, September 22, generations of men filed into our church to pay tribute to those values during their 75th anniversary celebration of Troop 325. The troop was chartered in 1943 with just nine boys in its ranks. Within its first year, that number grew to 34 members, and at one point in the 1950’s, it gathered together more than 100 boys—enough that is was split into two different troops for a time. Throughout the years, the troop was served by more than two dozen Scoutmasters, the adult leaders who help guide the boys’ activities and training. Many of these men were in attendance at the celebration on Saturday.

This column includes excerpts from an article that appeared in The Facts on September 26th.
