An excerpt of Jerome D'Costa's Bengali-language book 'Bangladeshey Catholic Mondoli' (the Catholic Church in Bangladesh) portrays the advent of the Portuguese and their presence in Bengal in the 16th and 17th centuries. It also tells why some Portuguese engaged in piracy and how some Portuguese missionaries failed to dissuade them from this evil practice. It then tells about Portuguese contributions to Bengali literature and language, and also to the names, cuisine, economy, and agriculture and horticulture of the Bengalees.
