You may not see them every day, but every day they are working to safeguardthe people and property of the Port of Los Angeles. They protect against crime,theft and terrorist threats by land, water and air. They are the Los Angeles PortPolice and they protect and serve not only the nation’s number one Port, butalso your own neighborhood.
The Port Police Wilmington Substation recently opened at 300 Water Street. Thissubstation houses officers who serve and patrol the northern part of the Port aswell as the Port’s Dive Team operations.

CAPTURING OUR HISTORY IN STORIES AND PHOTOS
The Port’s first 100 years were memorialized in an Oral History Project which
gathered more than 100 hours of never-before-recorded memories from
local community members, maritime industry leaders, active and retired
dock workers and the like, a total of 108 persons in all. See excerpts from
those interviews on the Port’s website, www.portoflosangeles.org.
The Port has also published a pictorial history book now available in
local bookstores. With in-depth research and more than 275 images,
Port of Los Angeles — An Illustrated History from 1850 to 1945 explores
the history of the Port as well as the development of Los Angeles from
pueblo to major metropolis.
WHAT A YEAR IT WAS!
WHAT A YEAR IT WAS! Seen from miles away, a fireworks extravaganza lit up the skies above the Port of Los
Angeles Main Channel on December 9th during a Centennial Birthday Party that culminated a year-long calendar
of community events. More than 5,000 people attended the party which included food, entertainment, and a
spectacular light and sound show in the Port’s main channel (1). As an added treat, the world-renowned
Evergreen Symphony Orchestra performed at the birthday party in its first North American concert (2).
Ushering in the Port’s second 100 years, a flotilla of ships and boats sailed down Colorado Boulevard as part of
the 119th Annual Pasadena Rose Parade (3). The Port’s two largest floats were a Love Boat cruise ship and S.S. LosAngeles container ship ridden by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Port Executive Director Geraldine
Knatz with her two sons. Both floats featured giant electric sockets to symbolize the Alternative Maritime Power
or AMP™ technology that is presently in use at two container terminals at the Port and will be expanded to the
World Cruise Center and the Evergreen container terminal over the next year. The six-boat flotilla also included a
Wilmington Tug, commemorating the Port’s first tug operator; LAFD’s Fire Boat 2, with 15th District
Councilmember Janice Hahn and LAFD Fire Chief Douglas Barry; the Catch of the Day fishing boat with Port
employees Stacy Allen and Vanessa Guillen; and a Port Police patrol boat.

MOVING FORWARDThis issue of our Main Channel newsletter highlightssome of the events and initiatives that topped off ourfirst century as a municipal port. But it alsounderscores how the Port of Los Angeles is movingfull steam ahead with a number of environmentalprograms that were not imaginable just a decadeago. This is an exciting era in our history as we shiftour focus toward greening port operations andcreating a vibrant new L.A. Waterfront for theWilmington and San Pedro communities.
In just the past few months we have adva n ced seve ra lkey clean air initiat i ve s. For ex a m p l e, the Los An g e l e sH a r bor Commission re ce ntly approved a Clean Tru c kProg ram that we be l i eve provides a truly sustainablel o n g - te rm solution for ensuring that future co nt a i n e r -hauling or "drayage" in and out of our Po rt will bepe rfo rmed by ca rriers who are acco u ntable fo rm a i ntaining clean tru c k s, h ave a place of business, a n dcan also provide off-street parking to keep trucks outof our local neighbo rh ood s. While the Clean Tru c kProg ram will co nt ri b u te to an ove rall 80 pe rce ntre d u ction in po rt - re l ated truck po l l u t i o n , m a nyco m m u n i ty members kn ow that ships are the biggestpollution source at our po rt s.The Po rt of Los An g e l e sco ntinues to partner with a host of re g u l ato rya g e n c i e s, e l e cted officials and industry leaders toi m p rove ship emissions through re g u l ation orte c h n o l ogy. In Ma rch we announced a prog ram withthe Po rt of Long Beach to underw ri te the cost of usingcleaner fuels in ships that call on the po rt s. This one-year ince nt i ve prog ram that begins in July will helpship ope rators start int roducing cleaner-burn i n g,l ow-sulfur into their ship engine sys te m s. Th evo l u nt a ry prog ram is ex pe cted to re d u ce shipemissions by as much as 17 pe rce nt while low - s u l f u rfuel re q u i re m e nts are deve l o ped at the state level andi nt rod u ced in 2009.
In April, the Port also joined Mayor Villaraigosa andCouncilwoman Janice Hahn in announcing plans forcreating a Community Mitigation Fund that will payfor Port-related community enhancements each timea major cargo terminal project is approved. This Fundwill help pave the way for future Port projects tomove forward. All new or modernized Port terminalprojects, as well as non-industrial waterfrontdevelopment initiatives, will be required to meet thestandards outlined in the San Pedro Bay Ports CleanAir Action Plan approved by the L.A. and Long Beachin November 2006.

In San Pe d ro,our effo rts will include the completion of amazingfo u ntain fe at u res at the Wo rld Cruise Ce nter ent ra n ceand along the Harbor Bl vd. Pa rkway. Other pro j e ct sc u rre ntly underway include cre ation of a Dow ntow nPlaza at Harbor Bo u l eva rd and Si xth St re e t s, a loo ko u tat Wa rehouse One and improve m e nts at 22nd St re e tand Sampson Way. The Po rt is also finalizing thep ro j e ct details that will be assessed in the upco m i n gSan Pe d ro Wate rf ro nt Dra ft Env i ro n m e ntal ImpactRe po rt (EIR), which we plan to release shortly fo rpublic review and fe e d b a c k .
Because all of these important waterfront initiativesneed more attention than we can provide in thisissue of The Main Channel, they will be the focus of aspecial Project Update publication that the Port willpublish this summer. Until then, we hope you enjoythis issue of the Main Channel.

FIESTA CORAZON DEL PUERTO EN JULIO
Esta Fiesta anual en Wilmington, "el corazón del puerto," es un fin de semana de diversión para toda

PORT OF LOS ANGELES GOES PRIME TIMEDuring the final months of our 2007 Centennial, a production team fromNational Geographic Channel (NGC) rolled its cameras nearly 24 hours a dayat the Port of Los Angeles to capture its day-to-day activities for a new“America’s Port” reality-documentary series. The eight-episode show whichbegan airing in April on NGC gives viewers an up-close look at the variety ofoperations and activities in and around the Port — from Harbor Commissionmeetings, to cruise terminal security, to Port Police operations, to pilotingmassive ships and orchestrating the dockside activity entailed with loadingand unloading of mammoth container ships. Tune in to the NationalGeographic Channel to see America’s Port in action.

This annual fiesta in Wilmington, "the heart of the harbor," is aweekend of fun for the whole family. FESTIVAL OF SAIL RETURNS TO L.A. IN AUGUST
Th e re is nothing quite as spe ctacular as a dozen majestic Ta l l Sh i p s™ s a i l i n gi nto po rt . Ma rk your ca l e n d a r s, be cause these ships are headed to the Po rtof Los Angeles August 15 – 17. There will be at least four Class-A ships(the largest size) participating in the Festival of Sail this year, includingthe United States Coast Guard vessel Eagle and the HMS Surprise, whichwas featured in the movie “Master and Commander.” In addition, therewill be at least eight Class-B ships and one Class-C ship. The GrandParade of Sail will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 15 and hoursfor ship viewing and boarding, free of charge, will be noon to 7 p.m. onthe 15th and 11a.m. to 7p.m. on the 16th and 17th. PORT OF LOS ANGELES LOBSTER FESTIVALRETURNS IN SEPTEMBER
This annual festival is a crowd favorite, bringing more than 40,000people into Ports O’ Call Village over a three-day weekend to eat freshMaine lobster meals, try other culinary delights, enjoy live music, trytheir luck with carnival games and simply enjoy the scenery. PORT IS A WORLD LEADER IN EXPLORING “GREEN”TECHNOLOGIESThe Port of Los Angeles is leading a global change in the way ports incorporatenew, clean technologies in their operations. Since the adoption of the SanPedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP) in 2006, companies in all realmsof Port operations have been re-thinking and re-powering their operationswith cleaner technologies aimed at reducing emissions from port-relatedactivities. At the end of the five-year implementation period, the San Pedro BayPorts Clean Air Action Plan will eliminate more than 15,000 tons of harmfulemissions on an annual basis. Here are several initiatives that will contribute tothat emissions reduction:

Th eNYK At l a s was the latest ship to plug in at theYusen Te rminal and AMP will be inco rpo rate d
i nto future NYK ships. L ater this ye a r, c ruise ships will be able to AMP at the Po rt ofLos Angeles as the Po rt co ntinues plans to have AMP at each major ship te rm i n a l .
Lower-Emission, Clean-Diesel Locomotives – A fleet of fourteen new, cleanlocomotives are now in operation in the portcomplex. The fleet, operated by Pacific HarborLine (PHL), is the most environmentallyfriendly switching railroad in the nation. Thenew locomotives emit 70 percent less dieselparticulates and 46 percent less smog-formingnitrogen oxides, eliminating more than 165tons of emissions per year.
Alternative Power Cargo Trucks – The Port of Los Angeles is in the process ofproviding grants to several trucking companies to purchase Liquified NaturalGas (LNG) trucks to move containerized cargo to and from the Port. LNG trucksreduce harmful emissions by up to 90 percent. In addition, the Port is testing afirst-ever all-electric cargo truck on its property which cuts emissions to nearzero levels.
Alternative Power Yard Equipment – Several alternative-fuel demonstrationprojects are underway at the Port of Los Angeles, including an all-electric towtractor as well as an LNG-powered yard hossler. This equipment is used oncontainer terminals to move cargo around.
Electric Truck – The Port and South Coast Air Quality Management Districtpartnered last year in a demonstration projectto build and test the world's first all-electricheavy-duty short-haul ("drayage") truck. Thetruck was recently introduced and is nowbeing tested in container terminal operations.In the future, a fleet of these trucks could bedeployed for the heavy amount of drayagethat takes place between the Port and local
rail yards and warehouses.
Hy b rid Tu g bo at – Last ye a r,e m p l oyees at Foss Ma ritime Co m p a ny had an idea to" g reen" their ope rations by cre ating a hy b rid tug powe red by elect ric loco m o t i vete c h n o l ogy. The Po rt of Los Angeles got behind the idea and pledged $850,000 tothe pro j e ct . The hy b rid tug is still in deve l o p m e nt, but when co m p l e ted it willp rod u ce 44 pe rce nt less part i c u l ate mat ter and nitrogen oxide emissions, co n s u m eless fuel and will be much quieter than traditional tug bo at s.
These are just the beginning. New technologies are being created and testedevery month and the Port of Los Angeles is open to exploring these options.

Desde la adopción del Plan de Acción del Aire Limpio (CAAP) de los Puertos
de la Bahía de San Pedro en el 2006, las compañías en todos los campos de
operaciones del Puerto han estado reconsiderando y reactivando sus
operaciones con tecnologías más limpias, con el propósito de reducir las
emisiones de las actividades relacionadas con el puerto. Al final del período
de implementación de cinco años el Plan de Acción del Aire Limpio (CAAP)
de los Puertos de la Bahía de San Pedro eliminará más de 15,000 toneladas de
emisiones perjudiciales con base anual. A continuación presentamos varias
iniciativas que contribuirán a la reducción de emisiones:

buque esté en el at ra ca d e ro. El NYK At l a s fue el último buque que estuvo
co n e ctado en el te rminal Yusen y el sistema AMP se inco rpo rará a los futuro s
buques NYK. Po s te ri o rm e nte este año, los buques de cru ce ros también
podrán co n e ctarse al sistema AMP en el Pu e rto de Los Ángeles, a medida
que el Pu e rto co ntinúa con sus planes de tener el mayor te rminal de buques
con AMP.
Locomotoras de diesel limpio, de baja emisión - Una flota de 14 nuevas
locomotoras de combustible limpio
operan actualmente en los puertos. La
flota operada por Pacific Harbor Line (PHL)
hace que esta compañía sea el ferrocarril
de la nación más amigable con el
ambiente. Estas nuevas locomotoras
emiten 70% menos de partículas de diesel
y 46% menos de óxidos de nitrógeno que
forman smog, eliminando más de 165
toneladas de emisiones por año.
Equipo de almacén con potencia alternativa - Varios proyectos de
demostración de combustible alternativo están en proceso en el Puerto de
Los Ángeles, incluyendo un tractor remolque completamente eléctrico, así
como un cargador de almacén que funciona con gas natural licuado (LNG).
Este equipo se usa en los terminales de contenedores para mover carga.
Camión Eléctrico – El Puerto y el South Coast Air Quality Management
District se unieron el año pasado en un
proyecto de demostración para construir y
probar el primer camión pesado de corta
distancia de acarreo todo-eléctrico. El
camión fue introducido recientemente y
ahora esta siendo probado el la terminal
de operación de contenedores. En el
futuro, una flota de estos camiones se
podrá usar para el alto volumen de acarreo
entre el puerto y las yardas de rieles y almacenes locales.
El bote remolque híbrido – El año pasado, los empleados de la compañía
Foss Maritime Company tuvieron la idea de “enverdecer” sus operaciones
creando un remolque híbrido. El Puerto de Los Ángeles apoyó la idea y
prometió $850.000 para el proyecto. El remolque híbrido todavía está en
desarrollo, pero cuando se complete producirá 44% menos de partículas y
emisiones de óxido de nitrógeno, consumirá menos combustible y será
mucho más silencioso que los botes remolque tradicionales.
Esto sólo es el principio. Se están creando y probando nuevas tecnologías
cada mes y el Puerto de Los Ángeles está abierto a explorar esas opciones.

Por ejemplo, laComisión del Puerto de Los Ángeles aprobórecientemente un Programa de Camiones Limpios,que creemos ofrece una solución a largo plazoverdaderamente sustentable, para asegurar que eltransporte o “acarreo” de contenedores dentro yfuera del Puerto sea realizado por transportadoresque se responsabilicen de mantener sus camioneslimpios, tengan un lugar para sus actividades ytambién tengan un sitio de estacionamiento cerrado,para alejar los camiones de nuestro vecindario local.Aun cuando el Programa de Camiones Limpioscontribuirá a una reducción global del 80 por cientode la contaminación relacionada con los camiones,muchos miembros de la comunidad saben que losbuques son la mayor fuente de contaminación denuestros puertos. El Puerto de Los Ángeles continúaasociado con un organismo regulatorio, funcionarioselegidos y líderes de la industria para mejorar lasemisiones de los buques a través de un reglamento otecnología. En marzo anunciamos un programa conel Puerto de Long Beach para garantizar el costo deluso de combustibles más limpios en las naves quellegan a los puertos. En San Pedro, se ha iniciado la construcción con tecnología de vanguardia delnuevo cuartel general de la policía del Puerto de Los Ángeles. Localizado en 5thy Ce nt re St re e t,el edificio de tres pisos tendrá un área de 51,000 pies cuadrados ycontará con modernas dependencias con tecnología de punta, un centro de
vigilancia y un centro de operaciones de emergencia.
El nuevo cuartel general será el primer edificio sede de la policía construido enCalifornia con la “certificación oro” Liderazgo en Energía y Diseño Ambiental(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, sigla en inglés LEED)desarrollado por el Consejo de Arquitectura Verde de los Estados Unidos (U.S.Green Building Council, sigla en inglés USGBC) que establece diseños y elementosde construcción sustentables con el ambiente. El cuartel general de la policíaincorporará paneles solares fotovoltaicos para la generación de electricidad,instalaciones hidráulicas y paisajismo con uso eficiente del agua y un sistemapropio de control de aguas pluviales y otras tecnologías.

!QUÉ GRAN AÑO FUE!! Visto desde millas de distancia, el gran espectáculo de fuegos pirotécnicos iluminó el cielo sobre el MainChannel del Puerto de Los Ángeles el 9 de diciembre durante la fiesta de celebración centenaria, con lo cual seculminó el calendario anual de eventos para la comunidad. Más de 5,000 personas asistieron a la fiesta dónde seofreció comida, entretenimiento y un espectáculo de luces y sonido realizado en el Canal Principal del Puerto deLos Ángeles (1). Como invitación adicional, la mundialmente famosa orquesta Evergreen Symphony Orchestrainterpretó en la fiesta de cumpleaños su primer concierto en Norteamérica (2).
Anunciando los segundos 100 años del Puerto, una flotilla de buques y barcos “navegaron” por el ColoradoBoulevard como parte del 119 desfile anual Pasadena Rose Parade (3). Los dos buques más grandes fueron elbuque crucero Love Boat y el buque para contenedores SS Los Angeles, dónde se transportaba el Alcalde AntonioVillaraigosa y la Directora Ejecutivo del Puerto de Los Ángeles Geraldine Knatz con sus dos hijos. PORT OF LOS ANGELES GOES PRIME TIMEDuring the final months of our 2007 Centennial, a production team fromNational Geographic Channel (NGC) rolled its cameras nearly 24 hours a dayat the Port of Los Angeles to capture its day-to-day activities for a new“America’s Port” reality-documentary series. The eight-episode show whichbegan airing in April on NGC gives viewers an up-close look at the variety ofoperations and activities in and around the Port — from Harbor Commissionmeetings, to cruise terminal security, to Port Police operations, to pilotingmassive ships and orchestrating the dockside activity entailed with loadingand unloading of mammoth container ships. FESTIVAL OF SAIL RETURNS TO L.A. IN AUGUST
Th e re is nothing quite as spe ctacular as a dozen majestic Ta l l Sh i p s™ s a i l i n gi nto po rt . Ma rk your ca l e n d a r s, be cause these ships are headed to the Po rtof Los Angeles August 15 – 17. There will be at least four Class-A ships(the largest size) participating in the Festival of Sail this year, includingthe United States Coast Guard vessel Eagle and the HMS Surprise, whichwas featured in the movie “Master and Commander.” In addition, therewill be at least eight Class-B ships and one Class-C ship. The GrandParade of Sail will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 15 and hoursfor ship viewing and boarding, free of charge, will be noon to 7 p.m. onthe 15th and 11a.m. to 7p.m. on the 16th and 17th. PORT OF LOS ANGELES LOBSTER FESTIVALRETURNS IN SEPTEMBER
This annual festival is a crowd favorite, bringing more than 40,000people into Ports O’ Call Village over a three-day weekend to eat freshMaine lobster meals, try other culinary delights, enjoy live music, trytheir luck with carnival games and simply enjoy the scenery. PORT IS A WORLD LEADER IN EXPLORING “GREEN”TECHNOLOGIESThe Port of Los Angeles is leading a global change in the way ports incorporatenew, clean technologies in their operations. Since the adoption of the SanPedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP) in 2006, companies in all realmsof Port operations have been re-thinking and re-powering their operationswith cleaner technologies aimed at reducing emissions from port-relatedactivities. At the end of the five-year implementation period, the San Pedro BayPorts Clean Air Action Plan will eliminate more than 15,000 tons of harmfulemissions on an annual basis. Here are several initiatives that will contribute tothat emissions reduction:

i nto future NYK ships. L ater this ye a r, c ruise ships will be able to AMP at the Po rt ofLos Angeles as the Po rt co ntinues plans to have AMP at each major ship te rm i n a l .
Lower-Emission, Clean-Diesel Locomotives – A fleet of fourteen new, cleanlocomotives are now in operation in the portcomplex. The fleet, operated by Pacific HarborLine (PHL), is the most environmentallyfriendly switching railroad in the nation. Thenew locomotives emit 70 percent less dieselparticulates and 46 percent less smog-formingnitrogen oxides, eliminating more than 165tons of emissions per year.
Alternative Power Cargo Trucks – The Port of Los Angeles is in the process ofproviding grants to several trucking companies to purchase Liquified NaturalGas (LNG) trucks to move containerized cargo to and from the Port. LNG trucksreduce harmful emissions by up to 90 percent. In addition, the Port is testing afirst-ever all-electric cargo truck on its property which cuts emissions to nearzero levels.
Alternative Power Yard Equipment – Several alternative-fuel demonstrationprojects are underway at the Port of Los Angeles, including an all-electric towtractor as well as an LNG-powered yard hossler. This equipment is used oncontainer terminals to move cargo around.
Electric Truck – The Port and South Coast Air Quality Management Districtpartnered last year in a demonstration projectto build and test the world's first all-electricheavy-duty short-haul ("drayage") truck. Thetruck was recently introduced and is nowbeing tested in container terminal operations.In the future, a fleet of these trucks could bedeployed for the heavy amount of drayagethat takes place between the Port and local
rail yards and warehouses.
Hy b rid Tu g bo at – Last ye a r,e m p l oyees at Foss Ma ritime Co m p a ny had an idea to" g reen" their ope rations by cre ating a hy b rid tug powe red by elect ric loco m o t i vete c h n o l ogy. The Po rt of Los Angeles got behind the idea and pledged $850,000 tothe pro j e ct . The hy b rid tug is still in deve l o p m e nt, but when co m p l e ted it willp rod u ce 44 pe rce nt less part i c u l ate mat ter and nitrogen oxide emissions, co n s u m eless fuel and will be much quieter than traditional tug bo at s.
These are just the beginning. New technologies are being created and testedevery month and the Port of Los Angeles is open to exploring these options.

CAPTURING OUR HISTORY IN STORIES AND PHOTOS
The Port’s first 100 years were memorialized in an Oral History Project which
gathered more than 100 hours of never-before-recorded memories from
local community members, maritime industry leaders, active and retired
dock workers and the like, a total of 108 persons in all. See excerpts from
those interviews on the Port’s website, www.portoflosangeles.org.
The Port has also published a pictorial history book now available in
local bookstores. With in-depth research and more than 275 images,
Port of Los Angeles — An Illustrated History from 1850 to 1945 explores
the history of the Port as well as the development of Los Angeles from
pueblo to major metropolis.

WHAT A YEAR IT WAS! Seen from miles away, a fireworks extravaganza lit up the skies above the Port of Los
Angeles Main Channel on December 9th during a Centennial Birthday Party that culminated a year-long calendar
of community events. More than 5,000 people attended the party which included food, entertainment, and a
spectacular light and sound show in the Port’s main channel (1). As an added treat, the world-renowned
Evergreen Symphony Orchestra performed at the birthday party in its first North American concert (2).
Ushering in the Port’s second 100 years, a flotilla of ships and boats sailed down Colorado Boulevard as part of
the 119th Annual Pasadena Rose Parade (3). The Port’s two largest floats were a Love Boat cruise ship and S.S. LosAngeles container ship ridden by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Port Executive Director Geraldine
Knatz with her two sons. Both floats featured giant electric sockets to symbolize the Alternative Maritime Power
or AMP™ technology that is presently in use at two container terminals at the Port and will be expanded to the
World Cruise Center and the Evergreen container terminal over the next year. The six-boat flotilla also included a
Wilmington Tug, commemorating the Port’s first tug operator; LAFD’s Fire Boat 2, with 15th District
Councilmember Janice Hahn and LAFD Fire Chief Douglas Barry; the Catch of the Day fishing boat with Port
employees Stacy Allen and Vanessa Guillen; and a Port Police patrol boat.

MOVING FORWARDThis issue of our Main Channel newsletter highlightssome of the events and initiatives that topped off ourfirst century as a municipal port. But it alsounderscores how the Port of Los Angeles is movingfull steam ahead with a number of environmentalprograms that were not imaginable just a decadeago. This is an exciting era in our history as we shiftour focus toward greening port operations andcreating a vibrant new L.A. Waterfront for theWilmington and San Pedro communities.

While the Clean Tru c kProg ram will co nt ri b u te to an ove rall 80 pe rce ntre d u ction in po rt - re l ated truck po l l u t i o n , m a nyco m m u n i ty members kn ow that ships are the biggestpollution source at our po rt s.The Po rt of Los An g e l e sco ntinues to partner with a host of re g u l ato rya g e n c i e s, e l e cted officials and industry leaders toi m p rove ship emissions through re g u l ation orte c h n o l ogy. In Ma rch we announced a prog ram withthe Po rt of Long Beach to underw ri te the cost of usingcleaner fuels in ships that call on the po rt s. This one-year ince nt i ve prog ram that begins in July will helpship ope rators start int roducing cleaner-burn i n g,l ow-sulfur into their ship engine sys te m s. Th evo l u nt a ry prog ram is ex pe cted to re d u ce shipemissions by as much as 17 pe rce nt while low - s u l f u rfuel re q u i re m e nts are deve l o ped at the state level andi nt rod u ced in 2009.
In April, the Port also joined Mayor Villaraigosa andCouncilwoman Janice Hahn in announcing plans forcreating a Community Mitigation Fund that will payfor Port-related community enhancements each timea major cargo terminal project is approved. This Fundwill help pave the way for future Port projects tomove forward. All new or modernized Port terminalprojects, as well as non-industrial waterfrontdevelopment initiatives, will be required to meet thestandards outlined in the San Pedro Bay Ports CleanAir Action Plan approved by the L.A. and Long Beachin November 2006.

Some people say the Port of Los Angelesis a city within a city. We have thousandsof people reporting here for work everyday, massive cargo terminals loading andunloading everything from tennis shoesto crude oil to pallets of fruit. We evenhave our own police department. Butbecause our police officers need to keeppeople and property safe on land andwater, they require some specialequipment. The Port Police SAFE™(Secure Around Flotation Equipped) boatis one of the cool machines that Port
Police do their job. The boats areencircled by a collar of foam that aids inflotation, stability and fendering. They arealso lightweight to allow for fasterresponse in emergencies. The Port’sdedicated police force uses the boat toescort cargo and passenger vessels inand out of the Port, patrol 3,300 acres ofwater spanning 43 miles, and transportthe Dive Team during everyday PortPolice operations.

The Port of Los Angeles is home to manydifferent kinds of creatures. When peoplethink of wildlife around the harbor, theyusually think of animals that live in thewater, but there are fascinating crittersthat live out of the water too.
Our shoreline is a nesting ground for thesmallest coastal tern, called the LeastTern. Currently this bird is on theendangered species list, so we are doingall we can to help boost their numbers.Port and community members areworking hard to protect their nesting sitenear Pier 400 from predators andvegetation that would keep the birdsaway. In fact, we put out decoys, or look-alikes made from wood. When the LeastTerns fly over and see the decoys on theshore, they think it is safe for them toland and lay their eggs too! Nests usually
have 2-3 eggs that are incubated byboth parents as they work together tofeed the chicks once they hatch. Whenthe chicks are large enough, they movealong the coast and inland to feed inwetland areas. Their numbers have beenincreasing over the last dozen years for
many reasons. In addition to having aprotected nesting site, they are finding agood source of food in the harbor. The
eelgrass beds and shallow habitats thatare created by the Port attract smallschooling fish and crustaceans, whichthe terns enjoy eating.
With these successes, the Least Ternmay one day move off of the endangeredspecies list. Until then we will continue todo all we can to create a protected placefor them. (Special thanks to CabrilloMarine Aquarium for information for thisarticle.)
Sea Creature Feature
With over 2,700 ships visiting the Port ofLos Angeles every year, one of the mostimportant jobs around is a Port Pilot. OurPilots are experts on the waterwaysaround our docks. They assist all of theships to navigate safely to and fromassigned berths. John Betz, one of ourChief Pilots wanted to let our readersknow more about what he does and whyhe loves it.
First he explains that Pilots must work for20 years or more to earn their positions.He began by attending a MaritimeAcademy where he learned aboutoperating large ships. It takes manyyears to rise to the rank of Captain. ACaptain may know everything about hisor her ship, but a Pilot knows everythingabout his or her port. Low and high tide,changes in water depth, hazards underthe water -- these are all things that can
cause an accident. But POLA Pilots arealways ready to save the day.
Captain Betz says the best part about hisjob is getting to drive big ships and beingout on the water. Anyone interested inbecoming a Pilot should like math andscience, because they are a major focusof school courses for ship captains andpilots in training. They should also beable to focus and pay attention to smalldetails. There is no room for error whenyou are at the helm of a 600-foot longcargo ship carrying millions of dollarsworth of goods and crewmembers too.
Captain Betz says he loves coming towork every day. It is fun and so differentthan the many careers. The Port of LosAngeles couldn’t operate without itsPilots. They are an important part of theteam that makes us one of the premierseaports in the world.

A cualquiera que estéinteresado en convertirse en Piloto debengustarle las matemáticas y la ciencia,porque son una parte importante de loscursos para capitanes y pilotos enentrenamiento. Nuestra costa es un criadero de lapequeña golondrina de mar, llamada LeastTern. Actualmente esta ave se encuentraen la lista de especies en peligro, así queestamos haciendo todo lo que podemospara aumentar su cantidad. Los miembrosdel Puerto y de la comunidad estamostrabajando fuerte para proteger los sitiosde procreación cerca del Muelle 400 (Pier400) contra los predadores y la vegetaciónque puede alejar a las aves. De hecho,colocamos señuelos, o elementos similareshechos de madera. Cuando lasgolondrinas de mar pasan volando y venlos señuelos en la orilla, !piensan que es un
lugar seguro para aterrizar y tambiénpara poner sus huevos! Usualmente losnidos tienen de 2 a 3 huevos que sonincubados por ambos padres que trabajanjuntos para alimentar a los pollueloscuando salen del cascarón. Cuando lospolluelos son suficientemente grandes, semueven por la costa y tierra adentro para
alimentarse en pantanos. Su cantidad haestado aumentando en los últimos 12 añospor muchas razones. Además de tener un
sitio protegido para anidar, estánencontrando una buena fuente dealimentación en el puerto. Las bases dehierba marina y hábitats poco profundoscreados por el Puerto atraen a peces ycrustáceos pequeños que las golondrinasde mar disfrutan comer.
Con estos éxitos, la golondrina de mar oLeast Tern puede algún día salir de la listade especies en peligro. Hasta entoncescontinuaremos haciendo todo lo quepodamos para crear un lugar protegidopara ellas.
