1.EventOverview
TheEuropean-AsianResearchNetworkonStrategiesforPromotingEurope-AsiaConnectivity(SPEAC)issupportedbytheEuropeanUnionandfurthersthedevelopmentofanEurope-AsiaresearchnetworkonstrategiesforpromotingconnectivitybetweenEuropeandAsia.
SPEAC contributes to establishing and developing a comprehensive research network that assessesthreemajorareasofconnectivitybetweenEuropeandAsia,i.e.economyandtrade,politicsandsecurityas well as people-to-people and rule of law. All research activities contribute to exploring thecontextualization, challenges and opportunities of EU-Asia connectivity and to the development ofrespectivepolicyrecommendations.
TheworkshopbuildsuponongoingcooperativeresearchoftheDepartmentofInternationalPoliticalEconomyofEastAsiaattheFacultyofEastAsianStudiesatRuhr-UniversitatBochum(Germany)withKorea University (Republic of Korea), EU Center in Singapore at Nanyang Technological University(Singapore), Uppsala University (Sweden), and Maria Curie-Sklodowska University (Poland). Theactivity is designed to strengthen intra-European and transregional research activities – therebybringingtogetherdifferentresearchapproachesfromvariousEuropeanandAsiancountriesandactorsandprovidingaplatformfortheyounggenerationofAsianandEuropeanresearchers.
TheworkshopaimsatpresentinganddiscussingthepoliticsandpoliciesofEU-Asiaconnectivity.Whendoing so the identification of actors and venues in global governance where Asian actors and theEuropeanUnionactaspartnerswillbeaddressed.ByidentifyingandassessingtheAsianregionasarelevantpartner,theworkshopaddressesimportantquestionsrelatedtoactorness,roleconceptions,andpolicyissuesinthecontextofEU-Asiarelations.
ThepurposeoftheworkshopistobringtogetherinternationalacademicsandexpertsfromdifferentdisciplinestotakestockofandassessthestateofplayofEU-Asiaconnectivityanditscurrenttrajectory.ThegoalistocreateaplatformfornewinterdisciplinaryandinnovativeresearchthatcontributestotheacademicandpracticalunderstandingofcontemporaryEU-Asiaaffairsinrapidlychangingglobalandregionalcontexts.

Prof. Jae-Seung Leeis a Jean Monnet Chair Professor and aManagingDirectorofJeanMonnetEUCentreofExcellence,KoreaUniversity,Seoul.ProfessorLeealsoservesasDirectorofNordic-Benelux Centre and Chairman of Asia-Europe Energy PolicyResearch Network (AEEPRN). He earned his BA in PoliticalScience from Seoul National University, and MA and PhD inPoliticalSciencefromYaleUniversity.HeservesintheadvisoryboardtoMinistryofForeignAffairsofRepublicofKorea.Hehashold visiting professorshipsWalter H. Shorenstein Asia-PacificResearchCentreandtheReischauerCentreforEastAsianStudiesatJohnsHopkinsUniversity.HisresearchareaslieinEuropeanpoliticaleconomy,foreignpolicyandenergysecurity.Hehaswona couple of outstanding awards including Asia Society YoungLeader(2006)andYoungLeaderatInterActionCouncil(2008).He has also contributed and given consultations aboutinternationalaffairstonationalandinternationalmediaoutlets.

Dr. Yoon is a research professor and secretary general of the EUCentre at Korea University. He earned his Ph.D. in internationalcommerce from Korea University. He had worked for the KISDI(Korea Information Society Development Institute), one of theKoreangovernmentthinktanks,aspartof theKoreangovernmentFTA negotiation team with respect to the telecommunicationsserviceforaboutthreeyears.HealsoworkedasaresearchprofessorfortheNordicBeneluxCentreatKoreaUniversity.Dr.YoonservesasamemberoftheboardofdirectorsoftheKorean-GermanAcademyofEconomicsandManagement(KDGW)andKoreaOrdo Economics Association. He has held membership in otheracademicsocietiessuchastheKoreaTradeResearchAssociation.HisresearchinterestslieinInternationalCommerce(WTO/FTA),traderelations between EU andAsia, trade policy, and FDI. Dr. Sae Won Chung is an Assistant Professor at the Division ofInternationalandAreaStudies,PukyongNationalUniversity,Busan.DrChunghasservedasanadvisoryboardmemberofKoreanSocietyofContemporaryEuropeanStudies.Hehasheldamembershipofthenumber of academic societies (Korean Society for EuropeanIntegration, EUSA-Korea, Korean Political Science Association, andWorldAssociationforTripleHelix&StrategyStudies).Hisresearchinterests lie in interdisciplinary strategic studies based on AreaStudies (Asia and Europe), International Relations (images andperceptions,strategicpartnershipanddigitalpublicdiplomacy),andCommunication Studies (strategic communication; manual andautomated content analyses—discourse analysis, social andsemanticnetworkanalysis.

She is often invited to speak at events, tailortrainings for companies and public agencies, and to lecturecourses for universities. Her teaching includes contemporaryaspects of China’s political economy and legal system, China’sforeign policy, EU Studies and EU-China relations. His research has focused on climate changepolitics, leadership, crisis management, and the origins andconsequences of warning-response problems. His most recentpublication is “The effectiveness of national and EU-level civilprotection systems: Evidence from 17 member states” in theJournalofEuropeanPublicPolicy.

David Alenga is a research fellow at the Norwegian University ofScienceandTechnology(NTNU)andpartof theResearchCouncilofNorway(RCN)fundedFateofNationsProject(FoN)attheDepartmentof Modern History and Society. His research interest includes theEuropeanUnion(EU),thepost-Sovietregion,internationalinstitutionsandenergysecurity.

Mr. Jin Hun An is a PhD candidate at Korea University majoring ininternational commerce. He earned his BA in psychology fromNewYork University and MA in international commerce from KoreaUniversity.Inparallelwithhisacademiccareer,hehasbeenworkingattheASEAN-KoreaCentre, an internationalorganizationmandated topromoteeconomicandsocio-culturalcooperationbetweenASEANandKorea, over the past six years. He is interested in empirical studiesrelatedtotheeffectofLow-EmissionDevelopmentStrategies(LEDS)onmacroeconomicsandenvironment.ForhisPhDdissertation,heiswriting on the topic “Impact of Trade Liberalization on CarbonEmissionsinDevelopingCountries:ASectoral-levelAnalysis”.
DianaSchnelle(RUB)
DianaSchnelle is a researchassociate anddoctoral candidate at thedepartment of International Political Economy of East Asia, RuhrUniversity Bochum. Her responsibilities include research,undergraduate teaching aswell as subject-specific student guidanceandcounseling.SheisalsopartoftheeditorialteamforASIEN–TheGerman Journal on Contemporary Asia. Previously, she has beenstudyingJapaneseStudies,ChineseandEconomicsattheUniversityofBonnandtheUniversityofKagoshima.Hercurrentresearchfocuseson Japan's energy policy and the impact of the global shift towardsdecarbonizationonJapan'sinternationalenergyrelations.Inordertogainfreshperspectivessheputstousehermulticulturalbackgroundandhigh levelproficiency in fourdifferent languageswhichprovideherwithauniqueaccesstodifferentsourcesoffthebeatentrack.
