Order of the Arrow Spring Inductions

The first Spring Induction is over. HOWEVER, there

is one more to go!! NOW is the time to get your unit

registered for the Order of the Arrow Spring Inductions.

There is one remaining induction – May 18-20.

Please make sure your elections are completed in time to

register. There is a strict two-week cut-off for

registrations. No late registrations will be accepted, and no

walk-ins will be accepted either.

June Program Planning Fair

DON’T MISS IT!! And, bring

ALL of your friends!

The June Roundtable Program

Planning Fair is THE place to

learn about all of the upcoming

events for the fall and 2013.

All unit leaders are encouraged

to attend. Here, you will receive

calendar information, program

information, and PLANNING information that will help

you plan your Scouting calendar for the next 12-18

months.

Effective planning determines the success – or failure – of

a unit. Cub Packs are encouraged to plan for School Night

for Scouting. They also need to plan those special events –

Pinewood Derby, Space Derby, Blue & Gold Banquets,

etc. All dens need to plan for a whole year of activities to

keep their Scouts engaged and motivated.

Boy Scout Troops are looking forward to planning

camping events, District events such as the District

Camporee and Klondike Derby, service projects, and

advancement.

Venture Crews plan for fun and exciting venues to

challenge the leadership capabilities of the older Scouts.

This includes many types of events that are not available to

the younger scouts.

So, bring all of your adult leaders to the Planning Fair at

the June Roundtable. Remember: ―If you fail to plan, you

plan to fail.‖

Mic-O-Say Workshop – 2012

ONE MONTH!! That is all

that is left before you go back

to your Reservation. Is your

tribal attire ready?

If not, there is a team of

dedicated Tribesmen who

stand ready to extend the hand

of friendship and warmth and

help you with your attire.

Each month, these Tribesmen hold two open workshops

where you can get expert help on how to update your attire

so that you look your best this summer.

May will focus on your headress. This will be especially

helpful to Tribesmen. Also, if you have any areas of your

attire that need special attention, they can help.

These workshops are designed so that you can work at

your own pace. Ask questions – they are there to help.

There is way too much information for the Polaris. So, be

sure to check out www.mic-o-sayworkshop.info. Here you

will find all of the information about upcoming workshops

and ideas. If you have any specific questions, be sure to

contact Robb Gibson at [email protected].

Training for Bear and Webelos Camp

There have been some questions raised

about what training adults must have if

they will be attending Bear Camp or

Webelos Camp. The answer depends

on which camp you attend. Here is the

answer from Cortland Bolles,

Program Director at Camp Naish.

Bear Camp: ―Since it is a parent-

son camp, we do not require ALL

parents and registered BSA leaders to

have Youth Protection Training (YPT). However, at least

one person from the unit should have YPT and any parent

who is also a registered leader must have YPT. If the unit

at camp for a session is only a parent and son, that parent

should have taken YPT, whether they are registered with

the BSA or not.‖

Webelos Camp: ―Any leader attending must be registered

with the BSA and, therefore, must have not only YPT but

all the training appropriate for their registered BSA

position. No parents are allowed to attend Webelos Camp

as parents only unless they choose to register with the BSA

as an adult and complete the required training prior to

attending camp.‖

Summer Camp 2012

Day Camp. Bear Camp. Webelos

Camp. Bartle. Naish. High

Adventure. EVERY SCOUT HAS

AN OPPORTUNITY TO GO

CAMPING THIS SUMMER!!

The only thing left is to make sure

that all of the last minute planning is

completed.

All Sessions for Boy Scout, Cub Scout,

Bear, and Webelow camps can be found at

http://www.hoac-bsa.org/Libraries/Camping_Documents/Camp_Session_2012.sflb.ashx.

Remember, the HOAC has a summer camp program for

EVERY SCOUT. Our job is to make sure that each family

knows what is available to them, and get their boy there.

If you have any questions, contact North Star Camping

Committee Chairman Jeff Tyler at 816-505-2015, or at

[email protected]. Or, you can call one of our District

professionals at 816-942-9333. Don’t be left out!

Emergency Text Alerts at Bartle

The emergency text alert

messaging system will be

operation again this summer at

the H. Roe Bartle Scout

Reservation. Subscribers of this

free service will be sent severe

weather or camp emergency

updates to their phone.

This is a great service that allows parents

and unit leaders to know what is going on at the

reservation. This cuts way back on phone calls clogging

up the telephone system during an event, making camp

leadership more effective in dealing with situations.

Sign-up is easy. Go to http://mobile-text-alerts.com/BoyScouts and complete the registration

information. Stay informed.

Roundtable Drawing

When you come to a North

Star District Roundtable each

month and sign in at the door,

you pick up a ticket. Did you

know that if you stay all the

way to the end, there is a

drawing at the end for some

neat Scouting prizes? Each

month, many tickets that are drawn go unclaimed.

So, stick around to the end and see if you can take home a

cool Scouting prize. If you don’t need the prize, then give

it away at your next unit meeting.

GOALS

Trained leadership in Scouting is

a goal of everybody. The North

Star District has a goal of getting

12 to 15 of our District adult

volunteers to earn their

Woodbadge training in 2012,

and 6 to 15 of our youth to earn their National Youth

Leadership Training.

If you are interested in taking advantage of the premier

leadership training program – Woodbadge – be sure to sign

up. Spots are going fast, so reserve yours now. If you

have any qustions, contact Jeannie Salmon at 816-222-

4878 or at [email protected].

Scout Night With the Command

On Saturday, May 5th

, all

Scouts and Scouters are

invited to come to the Sprint

Center for a night of high

flying action with the Kansas

City Command – our indoor

football team.

The Command will take on

(and defeat) the San Antonio Talons. You can be there to

cheer them on while showing your Scouting spirit. Tickets

are $10, and there will be a pre-game autograph session.

For more information, call 855-KC-ARENA, ext. 7213 or

send an e-mail to [email protected].

Boy Scout Spring Recruitment 2012

Incentives

In an effort to ensure we

offer the Scouting program

to all youth, the Heart of

America Council is

conducting a Spring

recruitment campaign.

Please use this opportunity to

bring new youth into your Troop, offer a great summer

camp experience, and have a lot of fun.

The Boy Scout Troop open house allows a Troop to open

its doors and roll out the red carpet to welcome guests. It

provides a forum to show off Scouting activities and the

Troop’s accomplishments. It is an effective tool to reach

youth who have never tried Scouting.

Any Boy Scout that recruits a new youth (not Webelos

crossover) into your Troop by the May Roundtable will

receive a Boy Scout pocket knife. No, you won’t get a

pocket knife like in this picture, but it will still be a cool

Scout knife.

For more information, contact your Unit Commissioner, or

District Director Brian Tobler at [email protected].

They will provide you a plan, the postcards, application

forms, and all of the other information.

Community Service Day Recap

On Saturday, April 21st, John Peter assembled a great staff to

coordinate the North Star District Community Service Day. Mulch was

spread on the walking trail at the Kansas City Police Department

Academy’s Trail of Heroes. A total of 116 Scouts and Scouters and 9

Kansas City Police Department volunteers spread 150 cubic yards of

mulch. A total of 550 hours of community service was performed.

Even Council Scout Executive Kenn Miller showed up and helped!!

Also, North Star District Chairman Jeff Goertz was interviewed on

Channel 41 news.

Thanks to all who participated.

Greetings North Star!!

HELLO Internationally Famous North Star District!!

I am very excited to start my new role with Heart of America Council as Senior District Executive for the North Star District! I am looking forward to the challenge and opportunity to continue my career in the largest district in the council.

My Scouting involvement started in college as an intern with the Coronado Area Council in Salina, KS. While attending Kansas State University, I interned with the Konza District and my first role as an intern involved Archery Instructor at Cub Scout Day Camp! I was very fortunate to receive a job right out of college with the Boy Scouts of America and have enjoyed working with and learning from the many dedicated volunteers in the Scouting program.

I have served the past 4 years as the District Executive and Senior District Executive in the Trailhead District in eastern Johnson County. I am an Honored Woman in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say and an Ordeal Member in the Order of the Arrow.

I grew up on a family farm south of Abilene, in central Kansas. After graduation, I attended Johnson County Community College on a tennis scholarship, and then transferred to Kansas State University. I received a degree in Journalism and Mass Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations from KSU…EMAW!

When I’m not Scouting, I enjoy being outdoors, playing tennis, slow pitch softball and running. I just completed my first half marathon last fall and have plans to run another here soon.

I look forward to meeting all of you at upcoming district events. I am here to serve you and to help Scouting grow and thrive in this community. If you ever need anything, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or 816-569-4948. Thanks for the many hours you dedicate to Scouting to instill values and character development to numerous youth.

Yours in Scouting,

---Jenna Murphy

Paddle Craft Safety Courses Is your unit planning a float trip? If so,

make sure someone in your unit has

the newly required BSA

Paddle Craft Safety course.

While Safety Afloat training

provides guidelines for safe

float trips, it does not provide

the training mandated by the

new guidelines. BSA Paddle

Craft Safety expands Safety

Afloat training to include the skills and knowledge needed

to supervise canoeing or kayaking excursions on flat water.

Each unit is required to have a minimum of one trained

adult on each on-the-water excursion.

The council will offer BSA Paddle Craft training each

session this summer at the H. Roe Bartle Scout

Reservation. The training is open to any registered adult

leader, Scout, Venturer, or Explorer and takes roughly six

hours of classroom time and six hours of on-the-water

training (plus an exam at the end). The certification is

valid for three years. Courses are open to full and parttime

adults as well as registered visitors who pay the daily

visitor/meal fee.

2012 Summer Schedule:

Session 1 — June 9 and 11

Session 2 — June 22 and 23

Session 3 — June 29 and 30

Session 4 — July 13 and 14

Session 5 — July 20 and 21

Session 6 — August 3 and 4

Kyle Anderson, with questions at [email protected].

Eagle Scout Board of Review Guest

Chairmen

You are an Advancement

Chairman for a North Star

District Boy Scout Troop. You

have a Life Scout who has

completed ALL of his

requirements for his Eagle

Scout. You need to set up an

Eagle Scout Board of Review.

YOU NEED AN EAGLE

SCOUT BOARD OF REVIEW GUEST CHAIRMAN.

So, who do you go to? In this case, call Bill Moberly at

816-781-4455 or at [email protected], or District

Advancement Chairman John McBurney at 816-781-

6923, or at [email protected]. Bill or John will make

sure that your Eagle Scout Board of Review is a success.

Remember, if you plan on having an Eagle BOR at Camp,

you still need to call and get a Guest Chairman.

Comments From Our District

Chairman

North Star District is awesome! Once again on our Community Service Day, our Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts came together and did a great Community Service Project. We have always had a tradition of giving back to the community, and this event showed everyone what we can do as a team. John Peter pulled together this project

with the Kansas City Police Department to help them and give back to them for the service they provide all of us every day, not to mention the use of the Training Academy for our Roundtable events. Together we did over 550 hours of community service. Now let’s make sure that all our units input those hours to help us meet our Journey to Excellence!

Last week also was our third report out on our progress toward our Investment in Character Campaign. With John Linder at the helm and John Perkowski , Katie DeHart and others working tirelessly on the phones, they pushed us to meet our Family Campaign goal before the meeting. This is outstanding teamwork! The North Star District has never reached our goal this early, and now we continue to work on our Community Campaign to meet that goal before our June 6th final report out. To all our leaders, THANK YOU for your support and efforts to make a difference for the boys in the program.

Our Journey to Excellence for North Star District is moving along nicely. With a bit more effort, we will become a Gold level District again this year. We need to continue to recruit and retain Scout in our programs. Everyone is responsible for this goal; it will take all of us to succeed, we cannot sit back and let our Membership team and our Commissioners be the only one’s working on this. Together we will be successful. Thanks for all you do in Scouting in North Star District.

Yours in Scouting…

---Jeffrey Goertz

North Star District Chairman

Training at Bartle

For the past several years, basic Boy Scout

leader training classes have been held at

Bartle each session. This is a great way to get

new Boy Scout leaders trained for their position.

One challenge to this effort is making sure that

there are enough commissioners to staff these

training events. If you are interested in helping

out, please submit a staff application and then

contact Karen Zeilinger at 816-516-3934 or at

[email protected].

Tribal Celebration

Time to register for Tribal

Celebration – 2012. This is a

time to connect with old

friends, make new friends,

and get re-energized for the

upcoming camping season.

The Tribal Celebration is Friday

through Sunday, June 1-3. It will start with a

Recommitment Ceremony ―Late Night in Lone Bear‖ on

Friday evening. On Saturday, there will be the Chief’s

Challenge, a Silent Auction, a Rememberance Ceremony

for our departed Tribesmen, a Dog Soldier Ceremony, and

the Chieftain Ceremony. On Sunday, there will be a

church service and breakfast.

The cost to attend is $21 for all youth under the age of 21.

The charge for all adults is $32. All 2011 Braves can

attend for FREE. All registrations after May 6th

will be

assessed a late fee, so register now! Bring all of your

fellow Tribesmen for a weekend of friendship and warmth.

For more information, go to http://www.hoac-bsa.org/Camping/HonorCampingPrograms/TribeOfMicOSay/TribalCelebration.aspx. See you there!!

Spring Recruting

Are you thinking of hosting a

Spring Recruiting drive for

your Cub Scout Pack? If so,

GREAT!!

However, you need to be

aware of several items that

will help you run a successful

recruiting drive AND retain all

of your new Cubs. The worst

thing you can do is recruit new Cubs and then have a

program that is not fun and engaging. That said, if you are

planning to host a Spring Recruiting drive, please contact

Brian Tobler at [email protected]. Brian will work

with you to make sure that you to conduct a successful

recruiting drive.

Woodbadge Reunion

If you have earned your

Woodbadge, there will be a

reunion on Saturday, May 5th

at

Camp Naish. The festivities will

start with a fun time hosted by

Chris Cakes (come hungry).

Festivities will be at the Cub

Pavilion and will start at 8:30am.

If you have earned your Woodbadge beads, come on out

and have some fun.

Remember, Woodbadge is the premier training program

for the Boy Scouts of America. Earning your beads is a

badge of honor.

Are You Tougher Than a Boy Scout?

The creators of

Deadliest Catch and

Ice Road Truckers

are unveiling a new

show that asks the

question, Are You Tougher Than a Boy Scout? Slated to air

this fall, the show will pit teams of adults against teams of

Scouts in challenges based on the Boy Scout Handbook.

―This is a wonderful, unique opportunity to demonstrate

the value, fun, and challenge of Scouting to audiences who

might be wondering what Scouting in 2012 is all about,‖

said BSA Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca.

Production of the six-episode series is set to begin this

spring, with the series premiering later this year on the

National Geographic Channel.

2012 Camp Staff Application

HOWEVER, the Council is always

looking for help.

If you are interested in being on staff

full time – or volunteering for a few

days or a week as a Commissioner – then

NOW is the time to fill out an application.

The 2012 Camp Staff Application is now available on the

Council website.

This year, the form is very easy. You can fill in the fields

on your computer instead of handwriting out the

application. Then, just print it and send it in. There are no

reference forms this year. All references will be contacted

by phone. The form can be found at http://www.hoac-bsa.org/Libraries/Camping_Documents/CMP_Staff_Application_2012.sflb.ashx

Voice of the Scout

The Voice of the Scout is an

online survey program that

will help guide the future of

the Scouting movement

through feedback from you.

Just a few minutes of your

time will give you the

opportunity to give

constructive feedback to the

Heart of Americal Council that

will improve your family’s Scouting experience.

The results from these surveys will give the Heart of

America Council an idea of what we can do better to

support our members. Your participation is critical, so

please take the time to let your voice be heard.

Do You Know Me?

Some of you know this person.

However, many of you don’t.

This Scouter wants to get to

know you!!

Many Scouters have skills that

are useful in their job or a

hobby. It could be carpentry,

electrical work, plumbing,

masonry, or any of a hundred

different trades.

What this person wants is to

match up your unique skill or

ability with a special need at either the Bartle or Naish

Reservation. There is so much work that needs to be done

all year long to help each of these facilities stay in tip-top-

shape so that our young Scouters receive the best camping

experience that we can offer.

If you have a passion for Scouting, and are willing to step

up and help out to make our Reservations a better place for

our youth, then contact Ranger Rick Ledgerwood, our

Property Superintendent, at 913-422-1035, or at

New Training Requirements

Did you know that starting in

January, 2012, the Boy

Scouts of America National

Office in Irving, TX, updated

the training requirements for

each registered position?

Well, they did. AND… it

probably affects you.

The overall chart is too big to list here in the Polaris. But,

the one major change is that for most Cub and Troop direct

contact leader positions, ―This Is Scouting‖ is no longer

required. Also, Fast Start for your position is no longer

required.

You can find inforamtion for your registered position by

checking out these two documents:

http://www.bsaroundtable.org/pdfs/BasicTrainingCourseRequirements.pdf

http://www.bsaroundtable.org/pdfs/Basic%20Training%20codes.pdf

If you have specific questions about what training you

need, contact North Star District Training Chairman Greg

Plumb at [email protected].

New Eagle Scout Workbook

The National council has developed a new Eagle

Scout Workbook that all Life Scouts are to use

when planning and implementing their Eagle Scout

Service Project. This workbook replaces the

workbook that the North Star District has been

using for the last several years.

It is very important that your Life Scouts who are

working on their Eagle Scout project get this workbook. All

new projects must follow this workbook.

Webelos Leader Outdoor Experience

Webelos Leader Outdoor

Experience (WLOE) is

specialized training that teaches

the ―how to‖ in planning and

conducting a successful

Webelos Den overnight event.

It will give you all of the

information you need for planning and carrying out an event

that is fun, safe, and meets all of the national policy guidelines

for taking Webelos on a camping or outdoor experience.

Any Pack leader who is currently in a Webelos den, or will be

moving into a Webelos den in the next 12-15 months, will

benefit from this training.

WLOE will be on Friday and Saturday, May 4th

and 5th

, at

the Earnest Shepherd Memorial Youth Camp, 610 E Shepherd Rd, Liberty, MO. For more information, contact Richard

Parmeter at 816-741-8758 or at [email protected].

Journey to Excellence

At the December Roundtable,

each unit was to have turned

in their 2011 Journey to

Excellence (JTE) form. This

form is an excellent way for

each unit to evaluate how well it delivered the Scouting

program to their youth.

Each unit committee should be using the 2011 JTE results

to plan how it can improve in 2012. Just like an annual

performance review for an employee shows areas of

improvement, the JTE program can show units where they

are doing well and where they can improve.

Each unit has a Unit Commissioner who is ready to assist

your unit in case you need any help. Just contact our

North Star District Commissioner Mike Cash at 816-645-

3237 or [email protected].

Summer Camp – SNEAK PEAK

One Down – One to Go!!

The first Summer Camp Sneak Peak

was a huge hit. Scouts and Scouters

found out more about what they will be

doing this summer at both Bartle and

Naish.

This is only one more Sneak Peak

Camp, and it is Saturday, May 5.

During the weekend, Scouts are able to

work on a merit badge taught by a

qualified counselor. Saturday lunches will be provided.

Merit badge classes are offered in the following program

areas: Archery, Shooting Sports, Woodcarving, and

Climbing & Rappelling.

For more information, check out http://www.hoac-

bsa.org/Programs/Activities/MiniCampWeekends.aspx.

Order of the Arrow

My Fellow Arrowmen:

Congratulations to all new Ordeal and Brotherhood members in our chapter after the induction this past weekend. I hope to see many of you at our upcoming chapter meetings and events. The next induction will be the weekend of May 18-20, I look forward to seeing you all there. Remember to register 2 weeks before this event.

On April 14, we had our annual Chapter Rendezvous at Smithville Lake. Thank you to all those that came to the call out, and we hope to see you again next year. It went very well, and the foam swords were a big hit!

On another note, our past Chief, Chief Jake (as many of you know him), was in a car accident on his way home from Camp Naish this weekend. He is home and is doing well, but I know it would help him and his family if we could keep him in our prayers. Thank you all so much, after all Jake has done for us, this is the least we can do for him.

Chapter 7 Chief – Anthony

The Council Strategic Plan

On page 4 of the Polaris, you read

about the June Program Planning

Fair. You read about how

important it is to plan for the

upcoming Scouting events within

your unit, and that an effective

plan is a roadmap to success.

This approach also applies to

the Council. The Heart of America Council has realeased

its Strategic Plan for 2012-2016. This is an ambitious plan

that will guide the Council for the next five years.

Included in this plan are seven distinct pillars. They are:

1. Program

2. Membership

3. Talent Management

4. Properties & Administration

5. Governance

6. Marketing

7. Finance

OK. You are sitting there and thinking to yourself, ―So,

how does this affect me? All I do is work with the kids in

my unit.‖

Well, it does affect you. You have to remember that the

mission of Scouting is to… ―Prepare young people to

make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by

instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.‖

To do this, the Heart of America Council has adopted an

ambitious plan to update our program by meeting specific

and measurable goals for the next five years. By doing so,

the way that you deliver the Scouting program to your

youth will be enhanced and expanded.

Spend some time reading http://hoac-bsa.org/Libraries/Resourse_Forms_Documents/Strategic_Plan_Summary_2012.sflb.ashx. Here, you will find the whole

program. You can then figure out how you fit in. And,

better yet, you can also find out how you can step up to

help out.

100th

Anniversary of

Eagle Scouts

2012 will mark the 100th

Anniversary of the first Eagle

Scout in the Boy Scouts of

America. There will be a special

patch that will be available for

those who earn their Eagle Scout

rank in 2012. Here is the new

patch. Pretty cool, huh?

This is a limited edition patch –

good for only this year. So, work hard and earn this piece

of history.

If you have any questions about this, contact John

McBurney at 816-781-6923.

Merit Beyond the Badge

The boys in your unit are

running around like wild

animals. You ask yourself,

―Is the time I am giving to

Scouting worth it?‖

The answer is – YES!!

And, do you know that we

can back up this answer?

Well, we can. The most

important thing to remember

is that you must ―Take the

Long View‖ when working

with your youth.

A study by Baylor University found that Eagle Scouts are

more likely than men who have never been in Scouting to:

Have higher levels of planning and preparation skills,

be goal-oriented, and network with others.

Be in a leadership position at their place of

employment or local community.

Report having closer relationships with family and

friends.

Volunteer for religious and nonreligious

organizations.

Donate money to charitable groups.

Work with others to improve their neighborhoods.

This independent research found that your time mentoring

boys so that they earn their Eable actually pays off in the

long run. For more information, check out

http://www.scouting.org/About/Research/EagleScouts.aspx.

And, remember, when you are at your wits end dealing

with the youth in your unit, the rewards in the long run are

well worth it.

Eagle Scout Projects

Are you your unit’s Life to Eagle

coordinator? And, do you have some

Life Scouts that are struggling to find

a worthy Eagle Scout Service

Project? We have just the answer for

you.

The DeLaSalle Charter High School

has many project ideas for

community service in the urban core.

These projects are looking for Life Scouts. They are also

looking for adults who can help fund these worthy

projects.

Remember, Eagle Service Projects are those that develop

leadership in the Scout while delivering a lasting benefit to

the community.

For more information, contact Anna Crabtree (a science

teacher at DeLaSalle) at 816-561-4445, ext. 231, or at

[email protected].

Watson. Shotgun start begins at noon and includes a

boxed lunch, awards reception and silent auction.

The 2013 National Jamboree will be held at the new Summit Bechtel Reserve.

The event is July 15th

, 2013. Applications for both participants

and staff are being taken NOW. This will be the first Jamboree at the new

christen this new facility.

ROCK CLIMBING!!! The Summit is right on the rim of the New River Gorge, an Area that is known

around the world for its more than 1,600 climbing routes. If there were an

ideal place for Scouts to learn and practice the art of rock climbing, bouldering,

and rappelling, The

Summit is it.

Plenty of man-made

climbing will be

available, too, and

Scouts can expect a

mix of both.

And, new sports

and courses are still

being added.
