The Points & Atemi-waza

Keynote: Kissaki Dan Grade Syllabus focuses upon maximising combat advantage by the use of points (acupuncture) on the body at close range.

1. Discussion and illustration of points

a) Most effective points on body;

b) Most effective methods of striking – Palm heel, Tettsui, Chi Arm etc;

c) Different intensities of striking – Farjing/penetration (Heavy Arm);

d) Use of points in various combat areas, strikes, locks, grappling.

2. Basic Stops/Openers - Flinch responses,

Kanku dai - Maewashi Uke inner/outer - Tai chi arm. This means opening moves i.e. flinch as set-ups.

3. Whole Body strikes -

Bag work to demonstrate - using different hand/feet strikes including heavy hand/arm techniques. i.e. strike hard areas with tettsui or palm heel - soft areas with knuckles - elbows etc.

4. Two-man sets

Demonstrate technical application and fluidity of movements as well as upper/lower.

Opening (Flinch response – opening reactive moves)

Round / Straight line attacks (defender)

Defence against a swinging punch application as in Kanku-dai. Striking with the whole body (fajing) Silding in deflecting the punch with the left arm, striking with the palm heels under the jaw with Teisho or Kumade, under the jaw face or eye-brows (CV23 / S7 / SI18 / GB14).

Defence against a swinging punch application as in Niju-shiho. Striking with the whole body (fajing) sliding in deflecting the punch with the left arm, striking with the fingers with Nukite or Hiraken or Ippon-ken or Hiraken (CV22) .

Defence against a swinging punch application as in Heian Yondan Striking with the whole body (fajing) sliding in deflecting the punch with the left arm, striking with the palm heel with Tei-sho or Kumade (S9 / TW17 / GB1 / GB14) .

Opening (Flinch response – opening reactive moves)

Round / Straight line attacks (defender)

Defence against a swinging punch application as in Heian Nidan. Striking with the whole body (fajing) sliding in deflecting the punch with the left arm, striking with For Fist (Seiken) 45%, (S5)

Defence against a swinging punch application as in Heian Yondan. Striking with the whole body (fajing) sliding in deflecting the punch with the left arm, striking with the outside of the arm (Wan), (S5 / S9 / TW17 / LI18 / GB20) .

Mawashi Uke

Mawashi uke block, stepping to the inside.

Palm the punch away with the right hand, bringing your left hand up to the outside of the right hand. So the back of the left hand just brushes the inside of the attacker’s forearm.

As the back of your left hand comes down the at-tacker’s forearm it turns closing the hand and extend-ing the attackers forearm. You could at this point grab the wrist points (L9 / HT7)

Moving in striking with the whole body (fajing), Sliding in hitting the head points with the outside of the fore-arm. (Wan), (S5 / S9 / TW17 / LI18 / GB20)

11

Mawashi Uke (Grab)

Mawashi uke block, stepping to the outside.

Palm the punch away with the right hand, bringing your left hand up to the outside of the right hand. So the back of the left hand just brushes the inside of the attacker’s forearm.

As the back of your left hand comes down the at-tacker’s forearm it turns closing the hand and extending the attackers forearm.

You could at this point grab the wrist points (L9 / HT7).

Moving in striking with the whole body (fajing), sliding in hitting the head points with the right hand palm heel (Teisho), TW17 / LI18 / GB20).

12

Upper Lower

Attempted Grab. Distract i.e. Slap to the face, clamp the arm to the chest.

Namegashi Using your heel to strike your oppo-nent’s inner thigh the strike is effective to SP 10/11. The kick strikes the inside of the thigh as in Tekki Shodan.

Heavy handed strike to the body or using the same principle as the heavy handed block. This technique can be used to deliver a powerful strike using the whole forearm to the outside head and neck. Striking with the outside of the arm (Wan), (S5 / S9 / TW17 / LI18 / GB20) .

13

Upper Lower

Defence against a swinging punch application as in Tekki. Striking with the whole body (fajing) sliding in de-flecting the punch with the left arm, striking with the outside of the arm (Wan), (S5 / S9 / TW17 / LI18 / GB20) .

Using your shin to strike the inside of the thigh the strike is effective to SP11/L9. Twisting the hip and leg into the target and dropping the hips on impact.

Moving in encircling the head. Wrapping the hand round the jaw under the chin, keeping the fingers clear of the mouth.

Wrenching the head back and straight down to the floor. With the right palm heel pushing down the other hand moving to the small of the back.

14

Upper Lower (180° Turn)

Defence against a swinging punch Mawashi uke to the out-side.

Striking with the whole body (fajing) with the right palm heel (Teisho) to GB20.

Knee Hiza geri to GB31 / 32

Grab the head as in Gojushiho dai / sho.

Stepping back 180%. taking your attacker down to the floor.

Core Principles: (Apply Coaching Methods)

T 1. Timing & Mahai:

Distance changes according to Art - Knives, Kyusho, Comp.

Method: Paired reaction sparring corner stone ex. Kyusho/comp

T 1. Mind Set - (Psychological security),

Need confidence that techniques will work to.

Method: Chi Arm & Heel kicks, palm heel, tettsui

T 1. Tai Sabbaki - (Attack Triangle).

Change line of attack by unbalance/deflecting opponent.

Method: Maewashi Uke - head attacks.

T 2. Whole body focus & strike with body weight.

Essential to focus whole of body into a technique. Often hands/legs/trunk operate separately.

Fa Jin / penetrate - Heavy Hands. (Bags).

T 2. Simultaneous Atemi / Uke - (Dual Hip) -2 sequences give opponent a window of nity.

Objective is to get at least two techniques to 1/2 hip rotation.

Method: Chi arm (outside) - Shuto inside.

T2. Upper / Lower switching of attack.

Tactic to disorient opponent and destroy stance/balance

Method: Chi Arm with kicks

Core Principles & Derived Combinations

Keynote: Basis of all combat is not the techniques but underlying system of delivery.

Identification and practice of core principles improves a fighters ability to deliver effective techniques. Kyusho Jutsu closes the circle in as far as it is a close quarter fighting system capable of being used effectively in all fighting arenas. Striking, grappling, throws and locks etc: It is an instructors task to de-rive methods of teaching core principles along with technique. Historically in the east this often takes the form of two-student sets and relates to all aspects of martial arts i.e. reaction sparring, kata bunkai and weapons.

Core Principles: (Agreement across most martial arts)

1. Timing & Mahai:

Distance changes according to Art - Knives, Kyusho, Comp.

Paired reaction sparring corner stone ex. Kyusho/comp

2. Mind Set – (Psychological security)

Need confidence that techniques will work to develop positive mind set.

Ex: Chi Arm & Heel kicks, palm heel, tettsui

3. Whole body focus & strike with body weight

Essential to focus whole of body into a technique. Often

hands/legs/trunk operate separately.

4. Tai Sabbaki (Attack Triangle)

Change line of attack by unbalance/deflecting opponent.

Ex: Maewashi Uke – head attacks.

5. Simultaneous Atemi/Uke:

1-2 sequences give opponent a window of opportunity.

18

Objective is to get at least two techniques to 1/2 hip rotation.

Ex: Chi arm (outside) – Shuto inside.

6. Upper/Lower switching of attack

Tactic to disorient opponent and destroy stance/balance.

7. Fa chin/penetrate:

Generally two types of strike, sharp energetic focus and penetrating

Focus. – Fluid shuto moves. Heavy hands

8. Plyometrics – Shuto-backhand – leg kick.

9. Balance/Rooting – (fluid stances) Push hands.

10. Distractions: Spit, slap, eyes

Stops (Chi Arm)

Fig 1 Fa jing/Heavy hand blocking with a whole body focus. The most common mistake as in the first photograph the lack of whole body focus is noticeable as the de-fensive posture is retracting away from the attack.

When the attacker swings in the punch your body weight moves forward over the hip with the arms extending out in a crescent. The arm does not straighten, like throwing a frisbee, striking with the back of the arm with both the major bones, the ulna and radius in line, not twisted as they would be if you over extend the wrist. As it impacts with the attacking limb your body weight shifts into an aligned position with your arms, hips and feet deriving power from the floor.

Heavy handed strike to the body or using the same principle as the heavy handed block. This technique can be used to deliver a powerful strike using the whole forearm to the inside/outside head and neck.

21

Stops

Using your shin to strike your opponent’s thigh the strike is effective to the side of the thigh e.g. GB 31/32 or to the front of the thigh ST 32/33. The shin is brought up like a Maewashi but is punched into the target with the hips dropping and moving forward on impact.

Namegashi Using your heel to strike your oppo-nent’s inner thigh the strike is effective to SP 10/11. The kick strikes the inside of the thigh as in Tekki Shodan.

Using your shin to strike the inside of the thigh the strike is effective to SP11/L9. Twisting the hip and leg into the target and dropping the hips on impact.

22

Haito

Spinning and striking Haiti to the hand mitt as used in Katas Heian Nidan and Nijushiho, striking BL10/GB20/TW17.

23

Fluidity Exercise

Maewashi uke block to the inside, the pad is held out in front of the face. Feeding straight back off the pad, striking the pad which represents the head with the back of the hand into S6/S7/SI18, following through slid-ing in the hips and striking with the palm heel the same points. Turning, retracting the hand patting down the attacking arm, spinning the body, striking down heavy handed teisho with the rear fist to BL10/GB20. Alternatively, just spinning and doing the same tech-nique with the front fist, working up to a fluent com-bination, practised in the ad-vanced section.
