In this quarters segment of Leadership Insights we feature David Smallwood. David
has been with Honda for 27 years. He has worked in various rolls in the Accounting dept.
including Dept. Manager. In today’s segment he would like to share the importance of
operating with “Anti-Corruption and Anti-Money Laundering” and how that fits in to
Honda’s goal to be a company that Society wants to exist.
Ohio House Speaker Arrested in $60 Million Bribery Case’ (Columbus Dispatch –
July 21, 2020). Headlines related to mismanagement of money are far too common in
our daily social media feeds and news outlets. Although the Columbus Dispatch article
references a large state government concern in Ohio, very recent matters affecting our
local schools, youth programs, and even Honda can be found in the news today.
Typically, the mismanagement of funds originates in two different forms. The first is
an individualized method and the latter is collusive in nature. This collusive behavior
might contain manipulation of product supplies, abnormal price setting/price fixing, or
bribery. If each of us were to reflect back on our grocery shopping experiences in the
early Covid-19 period, you cannot help but wonder if we did not experience some of
these elements. Nevertheless, unethical activities are typically a result of a lack of
policy, appropriate controls, and proper oversite.
To reduce the risk of the corrupt activities, governments throughout the world have
established antitrust laws and regulations. In addition, most businesses also have
implemented policies and procedures to protect the integrity of the company and
associates. Likewise, Honda has been focused on a goal of conducting all work in an
honest and ethical manner. For Honda to be successful in this goal, Best Practices
have been implemented:
1) Policies and Procedures (located on the HondaWeb/HondaMobile):
Anti-Corruption Policy:
Honda strictly prohibits its associates, or anyone acting on Honda’s behalf, from
offering or receiving bribes in any business transaction or other circumstance. This
prohibition has increased scrutiny and consequences when dealing with
public/government officials.
.
3
Anti-Money Laundering Policy:
Honda prohibits associates from conducting or attempting to conduct a financial
transaction knowing the transaction is designed to conceal unlawful proceeds
2) Effective Controls:
Honda’s Financial and Accounting controls are critical in preventing bribery and
other unlawful activities. Examples of these controls include segregation of
duties, cash authorizations, accounting and finance policies, and competitive bid
processes.
3) “Speak Up, Listen Up”:
Ensure associates are empowered to ask
questions and report concerns to
leadership, Compliance and Ethics, or the
Law Division.
Compliance and Ethics contact information:Call HTM's toll-free number (800-642-5524) to schedule a meeting Dial extension 69556 from any HTM phoneCome see Craig Fultz, HTM's Compliance & Ethics Secretariat, in Administration or call 1-937210-0578Our toll-free number, 1-800-642-5524, can be dialed from any phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
In summary, Honda has implemented
Policies and Procedures along with Effective
Controls in a vigorous endeavor to conduct
all work in an honest and ethical manner.
Although these Best Practices have been
implemented, I am aware of several cases at
both HTM and other Honda companies over the years where inappropriate and even
unlawful activities have taken place. When Honda becomes aware of these
events, appropriate actions have been taken which includes modification of the
controls. As a Honda team, it is important for each of us to understand that we
are all very important in the Compliance and Ethics process. If something does
not seem right, we must speak up. We are the eyes and ears of HTM and
Honda.

Thank you for all the Doors of Encouragement design submissions. This was the 6th year for HTM to participate in the Logan County fundraising activity. This year’s event raised a total of $43,000 for the Logan County Cancer Society.
Throughout the year HTM has been challenged by COVID-19. With each challenge we have found opportunity to overcome these obstacles and move forward stronger, this includes our community outreach. We were able to participate in the Komen Race for the Cure as well as the Honda sponsored African American Male Wellness Walk. Please look out for more upcoming activities to support the communities that we work and live in.
