PLYMPTON ST. MAURICEServing Christ in the heart of

Plympton and beyond

September 2017Dear Friends,

My name is Will I am 28 and I am married to Minnie. We have a10-month-old daughter called Natasha and a black Labrador calledLouis. As a family, we like to spend time going for walks, visitingfriends and family, and travelling when possible. I personally loveto watch films, cook and explore new places. I have a huge passionfor chaplaincy, because I feel strongly that Jesus was a Chaplain, and for the past eighteen months I have served as a PoliceChaplain to the Victim Care Unit in Exeter, a role that I plan tocontinue once settled in Plympton. I am also in the very initialstages of selection for Royal Navy Reserve chaplaincy.

For the past three years I have been serving as an Assistant Curate in St Thomas, Exeter.Minnie and I have loved living in Exeter and being part of a lovely community, but I amready for a new challenge and so we are preparing to move to my new post in Plympton. We are really looking forward to exploring all that Plympton and the surrounding areashave to offer and getting to know everyone across the various church communities.I first felt a calling to the priesthood when I was eleven, it was at a time when I wasdeciding what to do when I was older. I went through the usual routine of wanting to bea spy, an astronaut, a vet, an actor, but never a Priest. That was until God placed the ideain my heart and every time I decided not to follow His call the idea of being a Priest grewstronger and stronger until I could not ignore it. It was as if God lit a fire in my heart andevery time I ignored the fire He started He poured petrol on the fire. It is a huge privilegeto daily live out my calling to the priesthood and its variety of tasks.I really look forward to getting to know you all over the coming months and to startworking alongside the other members of clergy and laity and continue to serve thepeople of Plympton to make the love and grace of God known amongst all.God Bless you,Fr Will Sweeney

THE LICENSING OF FR WILL SWEENEY AS ASSOCIATE PRIEST/TEAM VICAR DESIGNATEFr Will’s Licensing as Associate Priest will take place in St. Mary’s Church (he will belicensed as Team Vicar next year in St. Maurice Church) on Wednesday 20th Septemberat 7.00 pm. I hope that you will all make a very special effort to be present as wewelcome Fr Will, Minnie and Natasha into the life of our community.Robert

OUT AND ABOUT At the invitation of the Plympton Academy, Rev'd Robert and I recentlyspent an hour or more meeting one of the teachers and three of the students, all of whom Iwould add were a credit to the Academy both in appearance and manner. A project onliterature, which the students had been working on, had resulted in the People’sFriend magazine donating a large selection of their magazines and books to the Academyand we were there to accept some of these for Church activities and groups.

After having photographs taken the boys served us with coffee and freshly baked scrumptiouscakes (you just knew food would come into it). They talked about the subjects and activitiesthey were involved in, their likes and dislikes, and they were extremely interested in Robert'srole within the Church and in the wider community asking a lot of questions and making someinteresting comments and observations. The opportunities and facilities offered to the students by the Academy are very impressive. When I think back to the basic 'pen and ink' scenario (Ed: Chalk and slate or inkwell andpapyrus?) when I was at school many, many years ago to what is offered now -unbelievable. Both Robert and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Judith Bye

TRINITY SUNDAY SERMON – FR. PAULEvents shape our thinking and our lives and those of the disciples too; so much so that theirunderstanding of God continues to impact on our lives now. Each week we affirm in theCreed, “We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, the maker of heaven and earth.”The oneness of God was the bedrock of the Hebrew faith and so, familiar with the disciples. So why not stop there ? Why refer to God the Son and God the Holy Spirit ?The answer : because of the events during our Lord’s ministry which shaped the thinkingand lives of the disciples.

At first the disciples saw Jesus as a good man or teacher; but gradually through His impacton their lives and the events which they experienced, they were led to St. Peter’s greatconfession of faith, when he said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Not a 2ndGod, but God revealing Himself in and through Jesus Christ. As we read in the Epistle to theHebrews, “In the past God spoke to us by the prophets, but in these last days He has spokento us by the Son.”

Then another momentous event took place, Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit toempower and transform the disciples’ lives, enabling them to recall Jesus’ words, “I will notleave you comfortless, I will come back to you.” God the Holy Spirit is not a 3rd God, but Godthe Father, revealed in Jesus Christ, in action in our midst, here and now.The Doctrine of the Trinity is the record of the events which shaped the disciples’ lives andthinking. It affirms what God the Father has done for us in creation; what God the Son hasrevealed to us of his grace, love, mercy and justice and what God continues to do now inand through the Holy Spirit. This has eternal consequences.

Some of you may recall the film “The Bridge on the River Kwai”, and more recently, “TheRailway Man”. Both record the building of the railway by POWs, to transport Japanese warsupplies, and which claimed so many lives. That railway ends at a buffer stop; a stout plankand a pile of stones. It seems so ordinary after so much cruelty and suffering and death. Some people see life in those terms; an heroic struggle, a journey encompassing hope andfear, pleasure and pain; but in the end, it all runs downhill to nothing, like the Burmarailway’s dead end.

But our Christian faith states that life does not run down to a dead end because God theFather, revealed in our Lord Jesus Christ, is active in our midst here and now. Hence ourLord’s words, “Remember, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”This is our anchor point, as events continue to shape our lives; some inspiring, someconveying senseless brutality and evil, such as we have witnessed in the past 2 or 3 weeks. For us to feel anger when we see children and young people killed and injured because of aperverted ideology is understandable. Anger is part of our humanity. The bible has manyinstances of righteous anger, for example the Old Testament prophets faced withexploitation of the poor and vulnerable; Our Lord overturning the tables of the moneychangers in the temple. So our sense of shock and righteous anger is justified when we see

events which seek to mar the beauty of God’s creation and to destroy those who are madein the image of God.So what does our Faith, flowing from and grounded in our Trinitarian knowledge of God, sayto us in the face of such events? Our Faith points us to two events. One, we affirm each week in the creed; namely the Cross– the crucifixion of our Lord. All kinds of evil find their focus in the crucifixion of our LordJesus Christ; injustice, cruelty, cowardice and evil, to mention just a few. God sotransformed the evil of that day, that ever since it has been known as Good Friday, for thecross reveals God’s power and love overcoming the worst that humanity can do – that God’slove is stronger than hate; that God enters fully into our lives and suffers with us.

During the concert in Manchester recently Marcus Mumford said to an audience of morethan 50,000, “Love casts out fear”; and Justin Bieber , “God is in the darkness.” Driving awayfrom Southward Cathedral a driver nearing London Bridge consulted his Satnav whichshowed the blocked roads picked out in red, forming a distinctive red cross. His commentwas ,”a cross was at the heart where there was hurt.”

The second event which gives us the assurance of God’s love and grace is the occasion whenour Lord told the parable of the Prodigal Son. Nothing touches the heart of what God’s loveimplies more powerfully than the end of this story, in which that love is displayed by thefather running to meet and embrace his returning son. It states that God want to enfold uswith his grace and love. Its message, “Whatever happens to you, I love you; you are my child,my daughter, my son”.Events shape and impact on our lives and thinking day by day, so much so that there aretimes when, I am sure, we feel unable to cope. But the events which lie at the heart of ourFaith, bring us assurance and hope. Our Faith enables us to see beyond the events of each day, to God’s enduring presence andcompassion. In the face of conflict our faith enables us to see that life is not pointless. It isnot a run down to nothingness – to a dead end.Our faith does not cocoon us from the events of life. Indeed, our Lord spoke of taking up across to follow Him; but our faith does give us a light in the darkness; it gives us a convictionthat God as we see Him in Jesus Christ tells us more about the reality at the heart of ouruniverse than anything else. Love of that quality is the most powerful force in the world, what ever events we face. This conviction is imparted to us every time we hear the familiarwords of the blessing, “The Blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit,be with you now and always.” Words to treasure, Amen

CARING FORCATHEDRAL VISITORS

Caroline Luff, who was one of the firstwomen to be ordained in the Church ofEngland, has been a Cathedral Chaplain for20 years and enthuses about the role inwhich she gets to meet so many interestingpeople. She said: “I am so encouraged by hearingpeople’s stories. This role is about being seenaround and ready to chat to people. Weoffer a ministry of care and reconciliationwhen needed and lead hourly prayers, whichI really enjoy preparing. It is about remindingpeople that the Cathedral is more than just amuseum – it is a living place of worship.”Caroline and her husband Rev Philip Luffwere in Teignmouth for 27 years andbrought up six children there. They becamea key part of town life but their connectionsto the Cathedral, where Mr Luff is aPrebendary Emeritus, meant that they had awider outlook.Caroline adds: “When I waslicensed in a parish comingto the Cathedral was acounter balance to theregular routine of ministry.”Caroline who was brought up in a churchgoing family says it feels like her “faith wasalways there” and it gives her “a frameworkfor the decisions she has to make in life.”As Chaplain, Caroline sees her role as beingthere for all in the Cathedral includingvisitors as well as the stewards, cleaners, flower arrangers and people in the shop.

She finishes by stressing theimportance of the role of chaplains towelcome people as they wanderaround the beautiful, sacred space. She says: “It is about making peoplefeel that bit more welcome and I’vehad many thank-yous from peoplewhen I have offered to pray for them.”

CHURCHES - PLACES OFSAFETY ANDREFUGE

We are called to be a beacon of goodpractice in the care and protection ofchildren and vulnerable adults –providing safe churches

Those who have heard me speak aboutmy faith will have heard me talk aboutit being the anchor of my soul. In God Ihave in the words of the psalmist foundmy rock, my fortress and my deliverer. It is in God whom I take refuge(Psalm18:2).As the body of Christ we are called toreflect the nature of Christ, the natureof God and I believe that as churches, part of the body of Christ we are calledto be places of safety place in whichpeople can take refuge. This is why Ibelieve that safeguarding is at the heartof the gospel. In the forward in the soon to bepublished new Diocesan SafeguardingPolicy for children, young people andadults Bishop Robert talks about how inMatthew’s Gospel Jesus tells hisfollowers: ‘You are the light of theworld. A city set on a hill top cannot behidden’ (Matthew 5.14).We are called to be a beacon of goodpractice in the care and protection ofchildren and vulnerable adults –

providing safe churches. As Jesus saysuncompromisingly: ‘If any of you put astumbling block before one of these littleones who believe in me, it would be betterfor you if a great millstone were fastenedaround your neck and you were drowned inthe depth of the sea’ (Matthew 18.6).As the body of Christ in Devon we are notalone in this challenge. The Diocese hasresources to support you. I have justattended one of the best training days onSafeguarding and you can find moreinformation about these, plus many otherresources and contact details for all theteam on the diocesan website (detailsbelow.)Let us pray that we may strive to be a churchwhere all people are welcomed into openand secure communities that make Christ’sreconciling peace known – places of safetyand refuge.www.exeter.anglican.org/safeguardingemail:[email protected]: Diocesan Safeguarding Officer CharliePitman 01392 345909

Sarah kindly sharesher experience withus:“ I didn't really knowwhat to expect formy confirmation butI was excited and feltit was my time. Itwas lovely to also beconfirmed with Lottieand Kate from StMaurice, along with

James and Helen from St Mary’s. My first steps to confirmation were with Father Rogerwho answered any questions we had regarding our faith (and the cup of tea and cake heoffered us, made by Brenda went down very well too!!) My confirmation itself startedwith Bishop Martin who was such an amazing character and made us all feel at ease withhis great sense of humour and brilliant wit. When he placed his hands on me and put the sign of the cross on my forehead with the oilof chrism, I shed a few tears and felt extremely moved. It was lovely to turn around and see so many familiar faces from St Maurice church, whohad taken the time to celebrate this special occasion with me. Also to have my twograndparents and family there was fantastic.I now don't just feel part of the church, I actually feel like I belong. The whole evening finished off with St Marys and St Maurice coming together with alovely buffet supplied by Father Robert and Christine.”

We are delighted to be able to announce that Ken and Tony, now so well-known and muchappreciated for their performances around dozens of venues locally, have kindly agreedto return once again with another Sixties and Seventies Music Evening at 7 pm on Saturday9th September. The event will be held in the Church Hall in Market Road. All funds raisedwill be in aid of the Devon Historic Churches Trust. Last year they raised over £400 for theTrust, which was a proud outcome. We invite everyone to come along again for a nostalgicand enjoyable evening filled with songs that everyone will remember. We shall beentertained with many new tunes this time. Tickets are now available from Ken Kingwellor Rodger Ruse at the bargain price of only £5 for each adult, with children coming free.Anyone unable to purchase a ticket in advance will be able to pay at the door. Do pleasecome along.

On this day Churches all over Devon will be trying to raise funds for the Trust whosemagnificent work has enabled many of the beautiful churches in our county to survive inthe current harsh economic climate. At St Mary’s, we have benefited from the Trust’sgenerosity on more than one occasion in recent times when urgent repairs to the structureof the church have become necessary. We continue to support the Trust as we have doneover the last six years and once again we are aiming to exceed the amount raised last year.We sincerely hope that our friends from further afield will join us at this enjoyable musicalevent.

St Mary’s Church is also supporting Heritage Open Dayson Saturday 9 September and Sunday 10 Septemberduring the day. We are joining in with hundreds ofplaces of historical interest throughout the UK who willbe opening their doors on those days to allow membersof the public to find out more about the magnificentheritage of our country. Our church will be open from9 am until 12.30 pm on the Saturday and from 1 pm to5 pm on the Sunday. A team of volunteers will be

present in the church during these times to provide guidance and assistance to the manyvisitors who we hope will be coming to admire our magnificent building. All donations willbe sent to the Devon Historic Churches Trust.

The remains of Plympton Priory will also be open to the public from 10 am until 5 pm onboth days. John Boulden and his team from the Plympton Civic Society will be on hand toshow visitors around this remarkable site dating back to 1121 and present the manyartifacts and historical items found therein.

For any enquiries please telephone Rodger Ruse on 01752 510190.

NEWS FROM ST MARY’S CofE (VA) INFANT SCHOOL

During the summer term, we were lucky enoughto have several visits and visitors to our school. The children look forward to the visits of theOpen the Book team who this term have told thechildren the Easter story, culminating in anenergetic re-enactment of the events leading upto Jesus’ ascension. The children at school reallyenjoy being chosen to take part in Open the Bookand we appreciate the efforts of the whole teamto provide these wonderful opportunities forworship for the children.

We also had a visit from Dawn Getleywho used her puppet to explore thetheme of friendship and how Jesus wasa good friend with the children. For our Year 2s, pictured here, therewas a very special event as theyattended the Diocesan Church Schools’Celebration at St. Andrew’s Church. The theme of this service was love andit was apt that we sang one of our newsongs ‘ The Greatest Commandment’, with the words ‘Love the Lord your God, with all yourheart, with all your soul and with all your mind’ringing out around the church.

Finally, Mrs Suzie Ottewell has been appointedas the school’s permanent Headteacher. As partof the school’s work this year, its ChristianValues have been revisited. There is a beautifulnew canvas hanging in the school to displaythese values, which was painted by Mrs RachelMay one of the school’s Teaching Assistants.

The school’s core value is love, drawing on 1Corinthians 16:14 “Let all that you do be done inlove”. With love at its heart, the school is wellplaced to continue to provide the besteducation and support for our children, rootedin Christian beliefs and values.
