THE PINNACLE OF PERFORMANCEWithout question, Smeal platforms are the safest, most innovative
apparatus in the industry. Their performance is a result of intelligent
engineering, designing around the needs of the firefighter and using the
highest quality materials available. All of our platforms have a rating
of 1,000 lbs. dry or 500 lbs. while flowing water, with no restrictions.
When minimum stabilizer setup requirements have been achieved, the
maximum ratings of the platform remain constant regardless of elevation,
extension or rotational placement of the aerial. This allows firefighters to
do their jobs without worrying about operational hazards.
PLATFORMS: The Smeal platform is the most versatile in the industry.
The two front entry gates open outward to maximize interior work area
efficiency, and can be folded back to allow full access in confined areas
thanks to double hinges. A continuous handrail leading from the ladder to
the platform protects climbers from large openings that would otherwise
occur when the aerial is at a high angle.
Our rearmount platform features an impressive 21.5 sq. ft. inside working
area while the midmount boasts 17.5 sq. ft. An innovative four-section
modular platform allows for simple, cost-effective replacement if any part
of it is damaged. In addition to the many other safety-conscious design
decisions we’ve made on our platforms, we’ve positioned the repelling
arm at the front of the platform to allow for safer, easier entrance and exit.
CONTROLS: Our turntable control console is easy to read, easy
to understand and easy to operate. The main operation station
is located on the driver’s side of the turntable to protect
against possible damage from low hanging tree limbs that are
prevalent on many city streets. The manual, direct hydraulic
controls are primary and override the platform control station.
We use electronic-over-hydraulic proportional controllers with
built-in ramping at the platform control station, which permits
precise aerial performance, regardless of desired operational
speed. Furthermore, the three-speed selector system allows the
platform operator to select the maximum function speed for aerial
operations in order to provide optimal control.
The Smeal Loadminder continuously measures the total ladder
load and provides a LCD readout for constant monitoring by the
operator. Smeal also provides a load chart at the main control
station and in the platform.
AERIALS: Smeal aerial ladders are well known for their generous climbing
areas. This is largely due to routing air lines, hydraulic lines and electrical
cables within the base rails of the sections, as well as by utilizing
cable carriers. Structural members that are internally exposed to the
atmosphere are protected with a coating of a compound labeled NWAC
120-4. This is a highly effective cavity corrosion inhibitor that provides
long-term protection for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. All Smeal
ladder rungs are fabricated of a special A606 Type 4 alloy that is corrosive
resistant. Each rung is covered with a highly durable and long lasting
serrated rubber cover attached with adhesive, as well as a mechanical
clip, assuring a firm climbing surface.
With all of its innovative features, the Smeal platform provides the
smoothest ride in the industry!

PLATFORM FEATURES
Stainless Steel Plumbing: Our plumbing manifold features stainless steel construction to provide strength and corrosion resistance.
QL-12 Electrical System: This “plug ‘n play” system reduces the amount of non-plug connectors and makes it easy to add components and make repairs to the electrical system. Smeal tillers come standard with a V-mux electrical system.
FP-4 Stabilizing System: Smeal’s unique stabilizing
system places the front stabilizers just behind the cab of the apparatus; this
forward placement provides easy access to the pump
panel while reducing stress on the chassis.
Platform: Smeal platforms are available with single and dual monitors with flow capacities ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 gpm. The monitors are available from Akron, Elkhart and Task Force Tips. Most monitors have nozzle sweep from -45 to +45 degrees vertical and 90 degrees horizontal left to right for full 180 degree coverage.
Substructure: Our hot dip galvanized body mounts come off the torque box and protrude outward to carry the body from the underside of the compartment structure. Additionally, both the upper and lower brackets have rubber blocks to absorb body shock. We also utilize an isolation barrier between dissimilar metals to prevent contact.
CP-84 Waterway: The CP-84 Waterway is a standard feature that provides the strongest, most durable waterway
on the market. A galvanized inner coating prevents corrosion of the 84,000 psi pipe while the exterior waterway is chrome plated to provide a smooth telescopic movement throughout
the entire extension and retraction of the aerial ladder.
DEDICATED TO QUALITY
In this industry, you’ll never hear of anything being “too safe” or “too
effective.” So, when we build our apparatus, quality is always our top
priority. It starts with the best materials—like our steel aerial ladders and
substructures—to build the sturdiest trucks available. Then the apparatus is
constructed by our AWS-certified welders, and every single weld is NDT third-
party inspected using mag particle examination.
We also individually paint each piece of our apparatus prior to final assembly to ensure total coverage. This gives
our trucks their exceptional look and is critical in effectively protecting against corrosion.
Our platforms are specially designed for maximization of efficiency, and the strength and stability of the Smeal
structure provides security and produces confidence.
Before we send any apparatus out the door, it first goes through a number of rigorous tests to
ensure performance is up to Smeal standards. All of our efforts to ensure
quality mean you’ll get the safest apparatus on the market.

There are a lot of fire apparatus manufacturers in this industry and, to be honest, most of them build a pretty
good truck. We don’t worry about other companies, though, because leaders don’t look back. They are focused
on the task at hand. Everyday, they push themselves to be the best. And for it, they are respected. Just like
you, there is a sense of honor in what we do. We work to make the perfect fire apparatus because we believe
the bravest of the brave deserve the best of the best. We are Smeal. We build respect.
