President's Message January 2015

My predecessor and mentor, Anne Wilson, told me that there were no mandated guidelines for the President's Message (except good taste, of course), so here is my first message.

I usually like to start off the new year with at least one new year's resolution. Last year, I resolved not to buy any more fabric until I had made a substantial dent in my stash. That resolution ended one month later when I walked into a store that sold fabric. (My all-time record for breaking a resolution is 15 seconds into the new year. It had something to do with "no more pansy shots" at a New Year's Eve indoor tennis event.) Later in the year, I had the perfect project to use up a lot of my brown fabric. As fate would have it, I ended up having to buy more to fill in the subtle color gaps, and now I have more brown fabric than I started with. As a last resort to reduce my stash, I could consider donating some of it, but then I might need one of the fabrics that I gave away.

This year I will not be making a resolution. Instead and as your new president, I am simply looking forward to the year as an adventure—new challenges on many fronts, new friends in the guild, and new opportunities to further the good works of the guild for the community as well as its members. I also want to thank all the 2015 Board members and committee chairs who have graciously agreed to contribute their time and effort to the guild this coming year. Can't do this without you.

Our new year features Jan Soules' presentation on Spectacular Borders at our guild meeting on January 6th and her workshop on Spider Web Quilts the following day. Also, if you haven't done so already, don't forget to renew your membership by January 15th, which will ensure you receive the guild benefits, including being listed in the membership roster!

Welcome to 2015!

Kate Grant

Community Services and Drop In and Sew

Community Services and Drop In and Sew THANK YOU! Thank you all for your support in 2014. You made Community Services successful. The 2014 Annual distribution occurred on Wednesday, 03 December. CS gave out a total of 415 quilts this year along with 214 stockings, 40 pillow cases, 20 walker bags, a few wall/table quilts to local citizens at Utah’s Place, senior care facilities, foster youth, deployed military, Salvation Army, Children/Adult Protective

Services, Community Recovery Resources, and others. The response to the personal hygiene collection was huge! Several boxes of items were given to Utah’s Place, a box was donated to Nevada County deployed military, and a box was held to be used with emergency quilts given out in the county.

Community Service will resume on Thursday, January 15, 2015. We have established goals for 2015 that will be announced at the January meeting. Kathy Biggi is busy making up new kits with different patterns – check them out at the January guild meeting or at CS.

Community Service Drawings continue in 2015 . . . each month there will be a drawing to thank you for your contributions. Each time you volunteer, donate, or help CS out, your name will be entered into the ‘pot’ and you will receive a ticket. You must keep your ticket until the next regular guild meeting when the drawings will be held.

Follow-up to Sips, Savories and Sweets!

2015 COOKBOOK – Salads, Soups, Suppers, and Sensational The Cookbook Committee – Kris Cook, Karla Rogers, Lorna Tiller, and Marjorie McConnell – are now working to bring you the second cookbook in a two book series (no book three). Recipes are being solicited for Salads, Soups, Suppers, and Sensational (desserts, preferably chocolate!). Recipes, along with a tip, technique, or interesting fact must be emailed to Lorna Tiller, [email protected] by 10 February 2015. At the May meeting you will be able to see a preview copy of SSS&S, taste samples of the recipes, and pre-purchase copies – a great gift for Christmas 2015. Cookbooks will be available for pick up at the September meeting.

Heidi Emmett here, your speaker chair for 2015

For our February 2015 speaker may I introduce our VERY OWN, Pat Fryer!! Pat has owned and operated several quilt shops in the Central Valley. She retired up here. Ha, ha, RETIRED! She is busier than ever with Villa Rosa Designs. She has her own line of patterns, kits and some great fabrics which she will bring to sell at the February meeting. Come and support one of our own talented members. She has much to share. Bring a quilting catalog that features one of her quilt designs and you will be entered in a drawing for a free pattern from Pat.

From the Editor:

Starting in February, I will have a poster displaying information about our Affiliates at each Guild meeting. If you are joining or renewing as an affiliate I would appreciate a business card, if you have one, included with your application. You can also give them to me at the December or January guild meeting. I have not always been as consistent in acknowledging those who are affiliates and I would like to insure that you are duly recognized in 2015.

Thanks, Sue Miller

Cozy Up to Quilts! Spring Time in the Pines, our annual quilt show, will be held May 2 and 3, 2015. Lorna Tiller is our featured quilter. Quilt entry forms will be available online very soon. Country Store is already taking signups for vendors and a new caterer is in the works. Mountain Art Quilters will again display their creative work. The basket raffle and silent auction are both on the schedule and much more will be happening!

Reminder to all members: • Plan what quilts you will be showing and perhaps finish a wonderful project in progress. • Mini groups and individuals start planning on a basket to donate. • Quilt Show Committee meeting will be January 20, at Eskaton Village.

If anyone would like to volunteer for Publicity Coordinator (we have mailing and media volunteers) but need someone to oversee. Also needed is a Props Chairperson for the Main Building only, the theme being “Cozy Up to Quilts” and already lots of ideas to draw on.

Banner Grange Request for Quilts to Display

Anyone interested? This is a little late for November, but maybe some would like todisplay their work. I have contacted Nory and this is an on-going activity, so they are still interested….contact

Nory if you are interested ….

Hi,

I am involved with the Banner Grange which is newly re-energized with folks who are looking to bring about a strong and active community center. Our hall is a huge,

cinder-block "cavernous" space with all the accompanying sound-quality issues. After visiting other such halls, I see that one way to help get better sound is to line

the walls with quilts.

We are in the process of running a cable around the length of the hall from which to hang quilts in an "Art Show" fashion. Wondering if any members of The Pine Tree Quilt Guild

have works that they would want to have hang in our hall. They would be up high enough to be safe, not leaned on, etc. and we could display them for an event, for certain period of time, or even

permanently. They would be identified, if so desired, as to the artist's bio, any information as to history, story, intention, interpretation, etc. of the work and cost, if for sale.

I would love to have conversation with someone about this soon, as we have some events planned for

November. Please give a call and let me know if there are any quilters who might be interested in helping us out this way or if you know of anyone who might simply

have some "spare quilts".

Thank you, Nory Fussell
