I wake up to a crisp, September morning, walk out on the deck with my morning coffee, and just take a deep breath. The fresh fall air fills me with energy and motivation. Message from your Vice President

2013 is soon coming to a close. One of my responsibilities is to take in “Hall of Honor” nominations and select new inductees by year-end. Currently I do not have any nominations. Page 2 of the Guild Policies found at the back of your copy of the membership roster describes the criteria for the Hall of Honor. If you are interested in nominating a deserving member of our guild, please bring your write-up to the next

guild meeting. Ruth Bertaccini will collect these in my absence. Final acceptance of nominations will be taken no later than the November 5th meeting.

Thank You ! Barbara Ceresa

Community Services and Drop In and Sew

Special October Event: Wednesday, October 2. Open sew - this is in addition to Community Services Thursday, 17th. We will work on larger quilts for boys and men and finishing quilts for the December distribution to those in need. 9:30 - 3:00.

Regular Community Services: Thursday, October 17, 9:00 - 3:00. We will continue to work on quilts for the December distribution. There is only one more CS in 2013 - Thursday, November 21.

Community Services recently purchased new irons and ironing boards. In addition we have two sewing machines, cutting mats, rotary blades, rulers, thread, batting, and fabric. We provide kits or patterns and help cutting out quilts or you can bring your own pattern. We can also use your help in organizing materials, matching quilt tops to backs, or cutting the batt. Enjoy a day out - we have beverages, chocolate, and home made cookies - or take a kit or materials home to work on.

I also want to thank those of you who attend CS and those of you who donate quilts and quilting. In August, we gave two quilts to the North San Juan fire victims. Community Services cannot exist without your efforts.

Remember: two dates in October - Wednesday, October 2 and Thursday, October 17. I hope to see you there.

Marjorie McConnell Community Services Chair

Lorna is currently traveling with her husband, John, in their RV. She is visiting guilds in Paradise and Oroville. She has been going to other guilds to show our 2014 Opportunity Quilt and, of course, to sell tickets!

Opportunity Quilt Travels

Program Notes

Karen Boutte will speak to us in October with her trunk show, “African American Quilts and Quilters.” Karen is nationally known and admired as a “Quilt Diva” and taught a 3-day workshop at the Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza in September.

She will encourage her students to use their creative spirits during her workshop, Puzzle Portraits. This is an opportunity to make a caricature of a beloved, or create a fantasy mask. The point will be to let your creative juices flow and have fun doing it.

After an overwhelming number of requests to have Thom Atkins visit us again this year, he is returning on November 5, showing his extraordinary beaded quilts. On November 6, his workshop: Beads II, Borders and Bezels, will be another exciting time to increase your beading talents.

Fall Home Workshops

September 19th—Faux-chenille: Learn how to layer, stitch and cut fabric to make a fun texture. This technique preserves the pattern in the top fabric, while softening the details.

October 17th—Stack and Whack: Ina Gibson will share her method for this type of kaleidoscope pattern.

Workshops are held at the Seventh Day Adventist Fellowship Hall from about 10:30 to 2:30 on the same third Thursdays as Community Service and Skill Builders. Sign up and receive the supply list at the guild meeting or by contacting Sue Robertson.

If I stitch fast enough, does it count as aerobic exercise?

MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL TIME

It is that time of year again when it is time to renew your membership in this great and busy guild. Our good computer records person, Ardy, will be sending you the form via email plus it will be on our website for you to download. If you have a member friend who is not online, you may copy a form and give to her. Do everyone a favor by getting your dues in early and avoid the rush.

I’ll be at our October meeting and you can turn everything in at that time. Thank you.

Patchwork Star for October, 2013 Myrna Raglin, Charter Member

A legend in her own time. Plaudits and accolades, evidenced by scores of fluffy ribbons, judges' comments and plaques, grace the wall of Myrna's tidy, well-appointed studio. Her unique and sophisticated genre, namely hand-appliqued florals amidst entwined Celtic bias strips, is profoundly stylized. Unapologetically claiming, “I might have to change a fabric five times!”, to achieve the harmonious color scheme she desires. Myrna's basic cache, albeit heavy on the batik scale, is comprised of pinks, blues, purples and greens. With a practiced eye for color, these four giants transcend into meticulously chosen blends—the magentas, the vermillions, the turquoises—nothing ambiguous, nothing uncertain. Like from a roux to a bechamel, there emerges a vividness in contrast, a clarity of purpose, a co-mingling of colors that always get along.

Blueberry-sized spheres as big as your thumbnail are mastered with nimble, experienced fingers. If you've been lucky enough to receive a bit of her tutoring, you have learned about her tried and true “starch and press” applique method. A small jar of diluted STA-FLO grocery store starch, with tiny paint brush in hand, is applied to the 3/16” seam allowance which is delicately ironed back onto a heat resistant template. Roxanne's glue is lightly applied to hold your delicate blueberry sphere onto the base fabric. Metal bias bars are necessary for ironing bias fabrics that will twist and turn throughout the intricate floral motif. Scores of photos collected throughout travels to Europe and New Orleans give credence to expertly adapted modern stylized designs that have become Myrna's own.

Meticulous finessing of detail and achieving a proud color scheme come not with ease and throw-it-togetherness. Husband, Loren, an engineer cum laud, rushes in with computer drafting skills, design enhancement and gusto. He, too, takes pride in Myrna's craft, aiding and adding to the ever increasing complexities she dreams up. They are a winning team, underscoring the joy of sharing.

Utilizing a simple, older Bernina 1300, Myrna's predominantly hand-sewing style, does not necessitate any grand modernized or secondary machine. Perfection has been achieved with 42 years of quilting experience. Silk YLI thread and a #9 betweens quilting needle are preferred for appliqueing. A giant design wall and padded ironing table complete her studio.

I now know why one of her awards reads, “Certificate of Awe and Wonderment”. Myrna insists, “Loren and I always preview on the computer any original design” to insure success, even “checking on the right color scheme.” There's no striking out blindly and hoping for the best. Huh uh! That exquisite medallion quilt you saw was researched and rehashed many times over—taken from a photo of their cruise ship's floor. We heartily agreed that good design is all around us all the time. Gleaning from professional graphic artists, advertisements, Italian cathedrals, Croatian gates are all ours for the taking. Feast your eyes, ever searching; you could be on to something grand!

From the Editor:

What a treat to be back in the swing of Quilt Guild activities.....the friendliness of members, as well as their willingness to help and to share, all make the Quilt Guild one of my favorite activities! This month I need to send apologies to Lynda Lasich for not including her exciting news in the last newsletter! She won a treasured “Golden Bear” at the State Fair for her quilt, . Many of you saw it at our Quilt Show in May where it received Best of Show.

Another member, Ingrid Cataneo, has had her quilt, “Kool In Ketchikan” chosen for inclusion in the special exhibit, Festival Awareness Project 2013: It’s Raining Cats and Dogs. The exhibit will travel in 2014 to various International Quilt Festival and Market sponsored shows. See her artist statement on page 9.

Last Saturday, September 14th, I participated in my first Jamboree! What a great time I had learning how to make a potholder quilt. Mary Levy’s patience was tried as I asked her again and again for directions...no, not for the same step. :-) As I visited the other classes, one thought struck me, and some of you have already heard this. I was so impressed with the people who attended. Many of them are experienced quilters; women, I think, who know so much about quilting, but are still ready to take advantage of learning something new at such a reasonable price! How many times do you get your check returned when you go to a class?

As I’ve written before and others have said, the Guild offers some great opportunities to learn; please don’t be afraid to ask for help. Lorna Tiller and Sue Robertson both offer their time to help with our quilting. Sue offers specific projects and Lorna is willing to answer your questions, help with projects, or provide a activity which teaches a skill. They are available on the third Thursday of the month at the Seventh Day Adventist church on hwy. 174.

The Guild offers some great opportunities to perfect our craft! Think about how you can take advantage of all we have to offer!

Hugs to you all...... Sue Miller

Artist Statement:

"Kool in Ketchikan" (34"x20") was inspired by a photograph I took of two dogs-both wearing upside-down sunglasses, perched in an open window of the Bayside building in Ketchikan, Alaska.  The mostly white with black spots pit bull mix dogs are iconic to Ketchikan both to the locals and tourists.  I wanted a playful reminder of our visit to Ketchikan, consequently one dog is pink and the other dog is blue.  It literally rains and pours at our local shelter with pit bull mix dogs.  Won't you please consider offering a "forever home" to a dog from your local shelter?  We did.  His name is Yuba, he too is part pit bull and a big love.  Kool in Ketchikan was written up and  appeared on the front pages of the Ketchikan Daily News in November 2012.  My blog address too: www.fabricandthreadpassion.blogspot.com Ingrid  Cattaneo

Kudos To Our Local Artists!

Lynda Lasich is all smiles as she shows off her treasured Golden Bear after winning Best of Show at the California State Fair. This award was added to the others she has won for her quilt, “Pennies From Heaven”.

The Pine Tree Quilt Guild has its share of expert quilting artists. This month finds a few of our members celebrating their hard work with awards by various organizations. Both Elvira Krentz and Sandra Bruce will have their work displayed at PIQF in October. Elvira’s “My Yo-Yo Quilt” and Sandra’s ”Self - Portrait” will both be in the show. Her ”Matteo and the Amaryllis” was also chosen. “Self-Portrait” received Honorable Mention in Tacoma at the Pacific West Quilt Show.

Good luck to both of you!

Quilt Shows and Websites

I recently overheard someone bemoaning the fact that the newsletter didn’t have the upcoming quilt shows listed. I must admit to being remiss in researching them, but I have found a site that lists them and when you click on a month you get the appropriate information...if they have it. For anyone interested in finding out more quilt show news, check: quilterstravelcompanion.com/quilt-shows/california-quilt-shows.php. Call me at 263-0805 if you don’t have computer access and are interested in finding a quilt show. Leave a message and I’ll return your call.
