Representative Telephone Vast 8-F3l Woman's Club Meets A delightful Christmas pro- gram was given by the Public Welfare Department of the Vass Woman's Club at the monthly meeting held Friday evening in the home of Mrs. D. C. McGill and Mrs. P. A. Wilson, with Mrs. D. F. Cameron, department chair- man, in charge. Mrs. C. P. Mc- Millan 'answered a number of Christmas questions, and Christ- mas customs in other lands were given by Mesdames Charles Gschwind, W. J. Cameron, G. M. McDermott. W. H. Keith, C. J. Temple, C. L. Tyson and W. T. Cox. Mrs. H. A. Borst, Mrs. S. R. Smith, Mrs. N. N. McLean and Mrs. W. E. Gladstone each gave the history of a beloved Christmas carol, which was fol- lowed by the singing of the carol. During the business session Mrs. Cameron and Mrs. Smith told of needy families in the county as reported by the Coun- ty Welfare Office, and Mrs. Cam- eron asked that donations be left with her, to be collected Fri- day by the Carthage committee, for distribution throughout the county. The group authorized Mrs. Wilson, American Citizen- ship chairman, to contact our senator and representative and recommend that the sale and use of fireworks be outlawed in North Carolina. A Christmas contest was won by Mrs. H. C. Callahan, Mrs. Temple and Mrs. Gladstone, and refreshments suggestive of the holiday season were served by the hostess group, composed of Mrs. Wilson, Mrs. McGill, Mrs. McLean, Mrs. McMillan and Mrs. Fields. Personals Mrs. Gladstone Is Hostess Mrs. W. E. Gladstone was host- ess to the Presbyterian Auxiliary on Tuesday evening, at which time Miss Neolia McCrummen presented an impressive Christmis program, assisted by Mrs. Wood- row Boroughs. Mrs. N. N. Mc- Lean led the Bible study, with Mrs. G. M. McDermott giving a reading. Plans for spreading cheer at Christmas were made. The refreshments consisted of "candle" sandwiches, pecan pie and Russian tea, and on each plate was a sprig of holly, nest- led within which was a red candle burning brightly. Christmas Pageant A Christmas pageant will be given at the Baptist Church at 6:30 Friday evening, December 20 and the public is invited to attend. "The Lighl of Bethlehem" "The Light of Bethlehem" is the title of a beautiful candle- lighting service to be given at the Methodist Church at 7:30 Sunday evening, December 22. A cordial welcome awaits all who attend. Attend Wedding Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Borst and Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Muse attend- ed the Covington-Hemphill wed- ding in Cameron Sunday after- noon. "The Shepherd's Story" A pageant, "The Shepherd'; Story", will be given at the Lakeview Presbyterian Church at 6:45 Sunday evening, Decem- ber 22. The public is invited. Precocious Tot When Captain and Mrs. P. B. Irby wish to talk secrets in the presence of their daughter, Su- san, they'll have to resort to something other than the age- old method of spelling. Susan, who was two years old in Octo- ber, already knows every letter in the alphabet and is learning to spell simple words. She learn- ed the colors months ago. Mrs. Irby and Susan are spend- ing some time with the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Cam- eron, while waiting to get an apartment in Atlanta, where Cap- tain Irby is an instructor at Georgia Tech. Well Attended The Presbyterian Church was packed to capacity Sunday night for the pageant, "The Shepherd's Story," and a number were un- able to get seats. The program was effectively presented. The pastor, the Rev. C. K. Taffe, was the shepherd, with Hugh McDer- mott as the email son to whom he was telling the Christmas story. Angels, the holy family, ahep- herds, kings and travelers ap- peared aa the story progressed, lovely music and special lighting i effects added to the impressive- ! ness of the scenes. Dr. and Mrs. R. G. Rosser arc expecting their daughter, Janet, home from Oberlin, Ohio, for the Christmas holiday, also their younger son, John, for a visit of several days. John, a registered pharmacist who has been with a drug store in High Point since he came home from service in the Navy, plans to take charge of the new pharmacy at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte the first of the year. Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Borst went to Cameron a night last week to make a birthday call on his mo- ther, Mrs. Lizzie Borst,who was observing her 84th birthday. Mrs. Dan Cameron is undergo- ing treatment in Lee County Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Alton Callahan and little daughter, Patsy, re- turned on Wednesday of last week from a vacation in Florida. Mrs. Leonard Cameron of Cam- eron RFD spent from Friday un- til Sunday with Miss Neilie Keith and brothers. J- W. Hennings and daughter. Miss Rosa Lee Hennings, of Car- thage Route 3 and Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Hennings and family of Robbins were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mis. Harold V.'illiams. Mrs. D. B. Holder, Mrs. M D Ashley, Mrs. Willard Newsom and Billy Holder were Durham visitors Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Keith and son, Philip, accompanied by Mrs. Thurlow Evans of Vass and J. W. Crouse of Carthage, went to Greensboro Sunday to see Mrs. John Clark, who is recovering at St. Leo's Hospital from a recent operation. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bell of Ra- leigh and J. A. Chappell of Ashe- boro were Sunday guests of Mr and Mrs. M. M. Chappell and daughter, Joanne, and the group visited in Raeford that afternoon. The Bells remained here to at- tend the pageant at the Presby- terian Church Sunday night Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Smith of Route 2 spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs, Anp.ua Cameron at Swann Station. Mrs. Smith's sis- ter, Mrs. Maggie Culbertson, who had been visiting her for several weeks, went with them and will visit the Camerons before re- turning to her home i n South Carolina. I Coyt Hinsley, who suffered a [ stroke several months ago, is now undergoing treatment at Duke Hospital, Durham. On Sun- day Mrs. Hinsley, Mr. and Mrs. Randall Cameron, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hardy and Robert Hardy visited him. Mr. Hinsley's paral- yzed arm and leg are in casts in an effort to straighten them, and it is hoped that he will regain the use of them. Mrs. Belle Boggs underwent an operation for the removal of a cataract from one of her eyes at Duke Hospital last week and is getting along nicely. Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Tyson, Mrs. C. J. Temple, Mrs. H. A. Borst and Mrs. S. R. Smith spent Fri- day in Raleigh. Edgar Klingenschmidt of the U. S. Navy is enjoying a leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Klingenschmidt, and other members of the family. Edgar will be here until after Christ- J.
