MARBLE FALLS — For 30 years, the Highland Lakes Family Crisis Center has provided shelter and support for victims of domestic violence. Free and confidential, the center’s shelter serves about 150 children and more than 200 adults a year. About 500 more children in Burnet, Blanco, Llano and Lampasas counties receive coun-seling through the center each year. “This community is really fortu-nate in that there’s a comprehensive system in responding to child abuse issues,” Executive Director Alma Lahmon said. “It’s about focusing on what that child and that family needs and responding the best way we can, collectively, to do that.” April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and each week, The Picayune is highlighting an organization that works on behalf of children.

Crisis center offers refuge for children, victims

The crisis center operates a 24-hour hot line that is open to anyone who might not know what to do or who to talk to if they’ve been a victim of domestic violence or rape. The center also offers counseling services to people as long as they need it. “A child may come in after an assault happened, and they’ve gone through the system, but they’re still dealing with the fact that (the abuse) happened to them,” Lahmon said. “Issues may come up later on, and that child up through adulthood may come through the facility.” The center works on the preventa-tive side with school districts to provide

a healthy relationships curriculum. Lahmon said one of the most import-ant lessons for adults is to believe what a child tells them. “It’s often not the stranger that’s going to be the person that perpetrates that crime; it’s typically someone known to the child,” she said. “Be open to believing the child when they do come forward and say something.” Dismissing a child’s claim of abuse might come as a result of shock at what’s being said, Lahmon said. “It takes a lot of courage to say, ‘This is the person who did this to me and this is what they did,’” she said. “It’s so important that child is heard. If not, it could be the child never speaks of it again, and they continue to be victimized.” For more information on the center, visit www.hlfcc.org. The local hot line is open 24 hours at 1-800-664-3574. [email protected]

I didn’t feel lonely.” Jonas Kelsall was among the 38 men who died in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan after officials believe it was struck by a Taliban rocket-pro-pelled grenade. Kelsall, 32, was a lieu-tenant commander with the elite Navy SEALS, a special operations squad. After her brother’s death, Kelsall said she felt she needed to do something to remember him and honor those who had died while serving their country. She found it in Carry the Load. The organization and event, found-ed in 2011 by former Navy SEALs, works to remind people of the reason for Memorial Day. It’s not just the first day of summer but a holiday set aside for this country to honor the men and women who died while protecting the nation. Kelsall made the trip to the 2012 Carry the Load event in Dallas as part of a team that walked about 35 miles in 20 hours. During the event, she met SEALS who served with or knew her brother, including a founder of the organization, Clint Bruce. She also met many other people who lost a loved one in the service of the United States, wanted to honor those who served or simply wanted to make a difference. She left Dallas a different person. And with a new passion. “When you end it, you’re totally exhausted but completely in awe of what some people did,” Kelsall said. “When I got home, I immediately called Curt and said, ‘If you ever do this in the Austin area, I want to be a part of it.’” On May 25, two days before Memorial Day, Reveille Peak Ranch

in Burnet is hosting Carry the Load 20.13. Ranch owner Vol Montgomery is donating the facility for the event and even cut a new trail around the stock tank for the walk. At 20.13 miles (done in laps), the walk won’t be as long as at the Dallas event, but organizers believe the impact will be just as deep and meaningful. “The true purpose of this whole event is to bring back the meaning of Memorial Day,” Montgomery said. “I think we’ve really lost why we have this day ... . And those who have served, they get frustrated when peo-ple don’t realize what the day is really for.” The concept is simple. You, your friends, your family or even complete strangers form a team, register, raise money and then show up May 25 to walk. The funds all go to local orga-nizations geared to helping veterans, veterans’ families and first responders. The actual event at Reveille Peak Ranch, 105 CR 114, starts at 11 a.m. with a display of military and police capabilities, including live and static demonstrations. Carry the Load 20.13 starts at 2 p.m. with opening ceremonies. Candyss Bryant, who regularly works within the military world and is an organizer of the Burnet Carry the Load, said while the demonstrations are exciting and will probably draw public interest, the real reason for the event remains the walk. And it’s not just because the event will raise money for other organizations, including one she works with, Serve Who Serve, but also because it opens an opportunity for the civilian and military communities to come together and walk side by side. “Events like this one appeal to me because the civilian community can

feel very lost when it comes to inter-acting with the military community. And so there’s this big disconnect between the two,” she said. “This event gives a place both can come together.” The best thing a person can do on the walk or even in day-to-day life when he or she meets somebody who lost a friend, relative or loved one in the wars is ask him or her about “their hero,” Kelsall said. “Just go up and say, ‘Tell me about your hero,’” she said. The one thing Carry the Load isn’t is a competition. “It’s about the intent,” Kelsall said. “It doesn’t matter if you don’t finish one mile. What matters is you came and you wanted to honor, to remember all these men and women.” Forming a team and raising money is fairly simple. People can go to www.carrytheload.org/austin and register. People can even donate to a team or the general cause by going to the Carry the Load website. Or, if a person doesn’t want to form his or her own team, he or she can join one of the current ones. Whatever the level of involvement — team captain, volunteer, donor or simply a spectator — the reason behind the event remains remember-ing the meaning of Memorial Day and all those it recognizes. “(Service members) were out there doing something for me, I’m chal-lenged to do something to remember them,” Kelsall said. “And when you come away from Carry the Load, you will probably commit to it the rest of your life.” To read more about Carry the Load 20.13, go to DailyTrib.com. children’s, eyes to the natural world around them. “A state such as Texas has a bunch of different habitats, but when peo-ple think of the South Texas brush country, they often think of it as some desolate, uninhabitable space,” Wood said. “But when I bring out a bur-rowing owl and tell people how it depends on that habitat, they begin to realize how important the brush country and other habitats are. These birds serve as incredible ambassadors for these places.” Wood’s show, scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. April 28, is only part of the four-day celebration. The epicenter for the Balcones Songbird and Nature Festival is the Balcones National Wildlife Refuge headquarters, 24518 RR 1431 about 15 miles east of Marble Falls. During the event, people can sign up for tours and bird-watching events on portions of the refuge not gener-ally open to the public. And two of the biggest stars are the endangered golden-cheeked warbler and the black-capped vireo. “There is only one part of the refuge the public can see the vireo, and that’s at the Shin Oak observa-tion deck in the northern part of the refuge,” said Rob Iski of the refuge. “Currently, there are a pair of birds in proximity to the deck, but not close. We’re offering tours so people can try and see these two species in places on the refuge that aren’t usually open to

the public.” There are several signature birding tours April 26-29. Along with birding opportu-nities, the festival offers several other nature tours such as Native Plants on the Refuge; Nature Photography Workshop; Exploring the Backcountry; and Blossoms, Butterflies and Bird Identification for Beginners. The event is sponsored by the Friends of Balcones Canyonlands NWR and includes a Family Day on April 28 from noon to 5 p.m. This particular time is set aside for youth and families to explore the outdoor world. The Fledgling Fest, as the fam-ily event is named, includes plenty of wild “critters,” a scavenger hunt, sunflower planting, birdhouse mak-ing and a spider hunt with Spider Joe.The Raptor Project also will have a birds-of-prey demonstration. “We do an exciting show where we fly the birds. We use music and sound effects,” Wood said. “It’s like the Cirque de Soleil of bird shows. But what we’re doing is promoting the birds along with people’s understand-ing. We’re especially trying to reach the youth because they need an awareness of the outdoors and the natural world. If they’re detached (from the natural world), they don’t realize how import-ant it is and what we’re losing.” For more information about the Balcones Songbird and Nature Festival, go to www.friendsof balcones.org. Both men are part of the Justin Sports Medicine team that is involved with 125 rodeos and more than 6,000 rodeo cases a year. Scott is the only chiropractor on the Justin Sports Medicine Team. His work with rodeo cowboys gives him experience that no other chiropractor can bring to his patients, he said. “When someone comes in present-ing (an injury) like one of my rodeo people, I better get an MRI on that right away,” Scott said. “Knowledge is key, but experience is just as import-ant. Helping transport people out of the arena, you see what’s going on. You’re able to catch things that might slip by otherwise.” The affiliation with Justin Sports Medicine also has added to Scott’s

extensive list of medical contacts. If he can’t help you, he knows someone who can. “That’s what I like about our group, and that’s what my patients like best about my practice,” Scott said. “We work together to find the best doctor for each injury.” One of those best contacts is Moore, who joined what Scott calls an uncommon partnership. “For a chiropractor and orthopedic surgeon to team up this way is unusu-al,” he said. “If you need anything, we can usually handle it between the two of us.” Both men have experience in the rodeo arena beyond treating injuries. Both are athletes themselves. Moore,

who played football and baseball at the University of Texas at Austin, stopped his rodeo career after getting bucked off a bull and breaking his spine and tail-bone. He decided to pursue medicine instead. Scott comes from a long line of rodeo enthusiasts. His grandfather was a professional rodeo cowboy. Both his parents rode in rodeos while in college. Scott started in rodeo but decided on track and football instead. Both men travel the rodeo circuit across the United States working with Justin Sports Medicine. The athletes also come to them, including the Houston Texan cheerleaders, who often need the same kind of rehab techniques as the cowboys.

plant in West on April 17 killed at least 14 people, most of them first respond-ers, according to officials, and injured more than 200 others. More than 50 homes were destroyed and many other residences damaged. For West, which has about 2,800 residents, the destruction has been cat-astrophic. Officials in West have said sup-port has been “overwhelming” for the community. What they need most of all, officials said, is monetary donations. Three foundations, Cooper, Rapoport and Waco, have joined together to establish The West, Texas Disaster Relief Foundation Efforts Fund. Officials said this fund is for the sole benefit of the victims and relief efforts for the community. To donate to the fund, go to www.wacofoundation.org and click on “Donate Now: The West, Texas Disaster Relief Efforts Fund. Financial donations also may be made at www.texasdisasterrelieffund.org. Texans also rolled up their sleeves

for blood donations. According to the Red Cross, there is enough blood on hand to help the West patients, but there are people who need blood every day, whether a victim of a recent catastrophe or other reasons. Donors, officials said, are always needed and encouraged to give blood. Three blood drives are scheduled for this week: n First Baptist Church of Marble Falls, 501 12th St. in Marble Falls, on April 24 from 12:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Call LaNelle Cozby for appointments at (830) 693-5135 or (830) 385-3580. n Llano Community Blood Drive at Lutie Watkins Memorial United Methodist Church, 800 Wright Street in Llano on April 25 from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. To register or for more infor-mation, contact Gina Moore at (325) 423-1154.. n Kingsland Community Center, 3451 Rose Hill Road, on April 26 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call Diane Caruthers for appointments at (512) 793-6958. CYPRESS MILL — It’s not much to look at with its colorful outer shell removed so Jay Reichert and his crew can give the truck a thorough inspec-tion. But don’t let the skeletal-looking frame fool you because when it all comes back together, Trophy Truck 26 can run down off-road racing com-petitors. “I like to describe it as a Cadillac couch that’s faster than a Porche,” Reichert said at the Texas headquarters of R&D Motorsports. He’s describing the way his off-road racing trophy truck, custom built from the chassis up, feels as it roars across desert roads. Reichert, a 20-plus year veter-an of off-road racing, formed R&D Motorsports last year when Charles Dorrance of Austin joined the team. Together, they moved into the most prestigious class of off-road racing: the trophy trucks. The duo broke in the truck at the 2012 Baja 1000 in Mexico. The race, Dorrance’s first big-time event, gave the team a look at how the truck moved and performed. R&D Motorsports hit the off-road venue again at The Mint 400 on March 23 outside of Las Vegas. The event draws the top off-road racers in the world. Reichert hoped the race would give the rest of the competitors a look at R&D Motorsports and Trophy Truck 26 and a taste of what is to come. He wasn’t disappointed. “The race was a big success for us,” he said. Though he and Dorrance finished 12th in the Trophy Truck/Unlimited class, the team clearly showed the rest of the off-road racing world that R&D Motorsports isn’t just in the sport to throw some dirt around and have a good time; they’re in it to win. “In most races, you draw for your starting position, but in The Mint 400, you qualify for your starting position like NASCAR,” he said. “So we took this brand-new truck out there and, of the 72 qualifying for the Unlimited Class, we qualified sixth. So we smoked 66 of the best off-road racing teams in the world. And the teams who qualified faster than us, they were from the Las Vegas area, so they knew the course.” Sara Schlegelmilch, Reichert’s girlfriend, rode in the right seat during qualifying March 21. “Since we are a new race team, we really sent a message to the other teams,” she said about R&D Motorsports’ qualifying time. “All the other teams, the best in the world, were asking, ‘Who is R&D Motorsports?” On race day, the team didn’t just enter the Unlimited Class but compet-ed in the Limited Class that started at 6 a.m. Reichert and Dorrance raced a 1600-class buggy, powered by a air-

cooled Volkswagen engine, to a fifth-place finish out of 20. The Mint 400 is a four-lap race over a 100-mile course. The Unlimited Class race gave the two drivers an opportu-nity to “pre-drive” the course in prepa-ration for the Unlimited Class race that started at 1 p.m. the same day. In the Unlimited Class race, Reichert and co-driver Joe Devine pushed Trophy Truck 26 to its limits, careening through the Nevada desert. The race was an all-out competition during which trucks and buggies hit speeds in excess of 80 and 90 mph. “There are times you can’t see much over the steering wheel, and you’re going 85 mph,” Reichert said. “Most of the time, you just keep plowing through.” Reichert drove the first two laps,

edging up into fourth place at one point. At the 200-mile point, Reichert turned the truck over to Dorrance. At one stage while Dorrance was driving, another vehicle slammed into the rear of Trophy Truck 26 and knocked off the spare tire. The team lost a little time as the driver and co-driver had to put it back on. In the end, Trophy Truck 26 crossed the finish line in 12th place among some of the best drivers and teams in the world. “The great thing is that this truck isn’t fully dialed in,” Schlegelmilch said. “And each time we take it out, it gets closer and closer.” To read more about R&D Motorsports, go to DailyTrib.com [email protected]

MARBLE FALLS — Cheryl Wheeler Duncan knows a thing or two about health and fitness. After all, her career as a professional stunt-woman requires her to maintain a cer-tain level of fitness. A fall while shooting a film sever-al years ago not only almost robbed her of her health, but her life as well. Yet, Duncan — then Cheryl Wheeler — not only recovered from her life-threatening injuries, but thrived. Duncan will share her story and her ideas for women’s health during a seminar April 26 at the SculptMoves and Hill Country Dance and Cheer headquarter, 910 Ninth St. “She has a wonderful story to tell,” said Cheryl Westerman, owner of SculptMoves. “She’s basically pay-ing it forward and trying to let women know what’s going on in their bodies and how they can eat better and live healthier lifestyles.” Westerman said the stuntwoman’s message has personally changed her life. Duncan’s seminar will start at noon, but it’s one of several things organizers are holding. Westerman will lead a workout 9-11 a.m. at her new facility. “It’s a beginner-friendly workout, so anybody can come in and join in,” Westerman said. Tenisha Graham of Hill Country Dance and Cheer will give people a chance to try their hand (as well as their hips, legs and entire body) at Zumba. One of Westerman’s friends, Natalie Heckert, will demonstrate her Total E-Fit resistance trainer. “We’re just combining our knowl-edge and passion to teach women how to be healthier,” Westerman said. While it is geared toward women, Westerman said men are also wel-come because the message revolves around healthy living. Plus, she said, men could share what they learned with the women in their lives. For more information on the sem-inar or to register, go to www.sculpt-moves.com. Registration is free, and people also can sign up the day of the event. [email protected]
