Autumn Services denied fundingWe formed a non-profit society in 2010 to address senior supportservices. The success of those services was realized when weopened our drop-in centre in May 2013. In 32 months there wereover 25,000 visits.
Prior to us taking it over, the center was a catch-all and storagearea for our landlord. We got to work, and with the help of vol-
unteers, we cleaned, painted, updated fixtures, lights and floor-ing, and were able to host our first workshop in April 2013. Weheld our grand opening in May and since then, have been pre-occupied with organizing and hosting and fundraising.
Always with an eye on the future, we have answered the day today demands, while growing the center into a space where manysocial and educational necessities are met. While much of ourvisitor population is comprised of folks 50 plus, we are constantlyre-evaluating our services to fuel the need for support groups, interagency collaboration, mentorship and social exchanges. Some may question if the center is needed, and my responsewould be Those two books FULL of sign-in signatures say it all.
The financial viability of our non-profit has been realized throughgrants, memberships, donations, draws, user fees, payment fromads in the Phraser Connector and a variety of print projects. Withover half of our income derived from grants, it was a shock tohear we were denied the grant we applied for in July 2015.
Our focus is on the months and years ahead. While at the presenttime our wheels may be spinning and we aren't moving forward, know that we have pled our case to business, and the three levels
of government where we could seek other sources of funding.
Believing the adage about the squeaky wheel, we placed a call toour MLA John Rustad whose office said they would talk to theGaming Granters and ask if an exemplary situation request bemade to allow a late application for funds, we await their reply.
We called our MP Nathan Cullen who was miraculously due to
pass through FL in a few days. He stopped by our center and en-joyed a half hour of idea sharing with us.
Dir. Mark Parker of the Bulkley Nechako Regional District hadseveral suggestions including gas tax & a Grant in aid.
Our board of directors held an emergency meeting to discuss ouroptions, amongst them - Go Fund me Account, host a bingo, start a raffle and seek more members in a membership drive. Allviable projects and work is underway them.
In the interim we will cut back production of the Phraser Con-nector, which we print and distribute as a community service.
As you can see, this issue is a shadow of its former self. In ourbid to get one into everyones hands, we will distribute it as nor-mal through the mail system.
On behalf of our board of directors we are grateful for all thefinancial and volunteer support we receive. The center is openMonday through Friday 10:00 to 2:00 pm and we welcome youto drop in, have a coffee, play some cards or just sit and visit.
you can drop by our center and sign-up as a member for $20
You can buy one of our amazing raffle tickets for $10 You can attend our BINGO in February You can donate to our Go Fund Me Account You can support our center by offering to volunteer for events You can volunteer between the hours of 10:00 & 2:00 pm daily You can stop by and give us one of your very own smiles You can honk and wave as you drive by and give us a
