About The Cover

This regiment of infantry was under the command of Colonel John Bull from November 25, 1775, to January 22, 1776, when Colonel John Philip De Haas took com-mand. The first battalion, still under the command of Colonel De Haas, was the nucleus for the formation of the 2nd Pennsylvania Regiment of the Pennsylvania

Line, Continental Army, October 25, 1776.

This battalion should not be confused with the battalion of Riflemen formed in June, 1775, under Colonel Wil-liam Thompson which was the 1st Regiment of the Con-tinental Line in 1776, and became January 1, 1777, the 1st Pennsylvania Regiment of the Pennsylvania Line under Colonel Edward Hand. Their uniform was brown faced with green, for full dress, but hunting or rifle dress

for service.

The dress uniform of the 1st Pennsylvania Battalion was brown faced with buff, pewter buttons with "No. 1" stamped on them, waistcoat of swanskin or soft fine-twilled flannel, buff breeches, white yarn stockings with black garters, and black half-gaiters. Later they wore hunting shirts and long overalls of linen or deerskin for

service.

The dress uniforms of some of the companies of the 1st Battalion, 1775-1776, were brown faced with green, or blue faced with white, or whatever uniform coats they could procure, until 1779, when we find them all dressed in blue faced with red, as Washington ordered

for all the regiments of the Pennsylvania Line.

The drawing shows the dress of a sergeant of the 4th company (Capt. Josiah Harmer's), in 1776, and also the manner of carrying the musket. Sergeants when on duty or parades, always held their muskets at the "advance," when the men were at the "shoulder" or "support." In dress, they were at first distinguished from the men by a small red cloth or worsted epaulet, as well as by the finer cloth of their uniforms. This epaulet was worn on the right shoulder. Later they wore two white shoulder knots, and a red worsted sash. They also carried a short saber in addition to the musket and bayonet. [Editor's Note: Lieutenant Lefferts based this drawing on a descrip-tion of two deserters from Capt. Harmer's company, who wore brown faced with buff. That combination may have been worn by that particu-lar company, but a study of a larger number of descriptions (see post) shows that brown faced with green was the recognized uniform of the 1st Pennsylvania Battalion.]

President’s Remarks

Joe McMullen, PASSAR President

The first Quarterly meeting of this administration is completed with many accomplishments. Thank you to Tiadaghton Chapter for hosting the meeting. We adopted bylaw changes to reflect the change in national dues and increasing our state dues accordingly. With the death of Chancellor Henry P. Hoffstot Jr., FP William J. McKim, Esq was elected to fill the vacancy of Chancellor and appointed to chair the Legislation & Resolutions Committee. A donation was made to the NASSAR Library Endowment Fund in the memory of Henry P. Hoffstot Jr. and Arnold Emerson.

I attended the Mid- Atlantic meeting held August 7 & 8 in Middlesex, NJ. President General Thomas E. Lawrence, Recording Secretary General J. Michael Tomme Sr, Treasurer General Larry T. Guzy and Warren M. Alter Candidate for Treasurer General 2016-2017 were in attendance. The Mid- Atlantic States endorsed Compatriot Alter’s

candidacy.

It is sad to report the death of FP Major General Donald J. Tressler. Service was held August 27th at Grace Lutheran Church State College, PA.

This year the Philadelphia Continental Chapter and the Southeast District Chapters DAR combined again for their annual Constitution Day Luncheon. That evening following the luncheon was the second annual DAR/SAR/CAR Constitution Debutante Ball.

It is wonderful for our organizations to join together for special events. This year’s Debutante Ball was very special as we hosted the National President’s of all

three organizations. SAR President General Thomas E. Lawrence, NSDAR President General Lynn Forney Young, C.A.R. Senior President Billie Spence and C.A.R. President Erin Jackson were all in attendance. What a wonderful evening for all our organizations. This was President General Lawrence’s

official visit to Pennsylvania.

Finally as your chapters are planning your meetings and events for the coming year don’t

forget to send an invitation. I will try to visit as many chapters as possible. See you at the November Quarterly Meeting November 6 & 7th in King of Prussia hosted by the Philadelphia Continental Chapter.

Your Humble Servant

Passing of a Titan Compatriot Henry Phipps Hoffstot Jr, PASSAR Chancellor (1917 – 2015)

Excerpts/Photo from Jason Cato of the Pittsburgh Tribune, July 1, 2015

The PASSAR took notice that Chancellor Compatriot Henry Hoffstot Jr. died Monday, June 29, 2015. He was 98. Mr. Hoffstot Jr. was passionate about his roots and his commitment to the preservation of his home and community. After becoming a compatriot of the Sons of the American Revolution and subsequently becoming involved with the PASSAR as Chancellor, fellow compatriots spoke fondly of his famed trips in his Rolls Royce. Mr. Hoffstot Jr. went to Harvard and joined the Pittsburgh law firm of Reed Smith. Soon after, he was drafted into the Army. He joined the 44th Infantry Division and entered the Army Specialized Training Program. He learned German and was assigned to the Counter Intelligence Corps.

In 1945, his unit took the surrender of famed German rocket scientist and missile commander Wernher von Braun, who later would become father of the American Saturn V rocket that launched U.S. astronauts to the moon. Mr. Hoffstot married Barbara Drew, the daughter of a Pennsylvania Supreme Court chief justice and a Pittsburgh steel heiress. They were married for 46 years before she died in 1994. The couple had two children:

daughter, Thayer Hoffstot Unterman, 64, of Gordonsville, Va., and son, H. Phipps Hoffstot III, 58, of Ligonier. “He really was a remarkable person,” Hoffstot III

said about his father. Compatriot William J. McKim, Esq. was recently elected to fulfill the vacancy left by the passing of Hoffstot.

Wreaths Across America Campaign Photo Courtesy Gary Timmons, George Washington Chapter

Over the last several years, the Sons of the American Revolution and the Pennsylvania Society have become strong partners with the Wreaths Across America campaign. Wreaths Across America’s mission is to REMEMBER the fallen – HONOR those who serve and TEACH our children the value of freedom. Wreaths Across America was started in 1992 by Morrill Worcester of the Worcester Wreath Company, a family owned business located in Harrington, Maine. Forced with a large overstock of fresh-cut balsam wreaths that year, Worcester decided to donate 5,000 of them to be placed on the graves in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. That tradition has continued each year since, until a picture of the wreaths project hit the internet and spread to other National cemeteries. In all, last year, about 400,000 wreaths were placed simultaneously at more than 800 cemeteries across the country including 25 overseas. There are several cemeteries that take part in Pennsylvania. Wreath sponsorships are $15.00 each and anyone wishing to sponsor a wreath or who would like more information should contact Floyd Turner (610)406-3933 in the East and Gary Timmons (304)242-8759 in the West. In life they served their country and now is a chance for us to honor them.

Geo. Washington Chapter Dedicate Grave Marker

Honor Guard from G.W., General Anthony Wayne and Ebenezer Provide Ceremonial Duties.

Photo and Article by: Gary Timmons, George Washington Chapter

As the years pass so does the opportunity to find and recognize Patriots who have gone missing. Such was the case in Canonsburg, PA when the George Washington Chapter honored with Grave Dedication for Patriot John Thomas McCall where a new headstone was

laid at the Oak Spring Cemetery located in Canonsburg, PA. The ceremony included the Color Guard from Gen. Anthony Wayne, George. Washington and Ebenezer Zane. Photos are from that ceremony.

Celebrating the Whiskey Rebellion

In 1794, an uprising that afforded the new U.S. government its first opportunity to establish federal authority by military means within state boundaries, as officials moved into western Pennsylvania to quell an uprising of settlers rebelling against the liquor tax. Alexander Hamilton, secretary of the Treasury, had proposed the excise (enacted by Congress in 1791, the first national internal revenue tax) to raise money for the national debt and to assert the power of the national government. Small farmers of the backcountry distilled (and consumed) whiskey, which was easier to transport and sell than the grain that was its source. It was an informal currency, a means of livelihood, and an enlivener of a harsh existence. The distillers resisted the tax by attacking (often tarring and feathering) federal revenue officers who attempted to collect it. George Washington Chapter had an SAR info table set up at the

Whiskey Rebellion held in Washington PA. Is the Pennsylvania contingent that took part in the Fort Laurens Memorial ceremony held near Bolivar, Ohio. Fort Laurens in the only Revolutionary War fort in the state of Ohio. There is a Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary War Soldier and wreaths were placed during the ceremony.

Tiadaghton Chapter hosts BOM Meeting in Williamsport, Pennsylvania

By William E. Harry, Editor, The Pennsylvania Minuteman Newsletter

The Tiadaghton Chapter hosted a first rate destination for the PASSAR BOM summer meeting and prominently provided superb services through the Genetti Hotel in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. A hotel that bills itself as a revival of the 1930’s where elegance and refinement was the standard by which other hotels would be rated. Over the years, Genetti Hotel, formally known as the Lycoming Hotel, has been the site of many venues for the civic, social, business, and political organizations within the region, as well as for state and national organizations. The PASSAR BOM Meeting, which was well managed and facilitated by Joseph McMullen, PASSAR President, provided a backdrop for many report and agenda items on the nearly 86 page Report. Most noted was the approximate 30 awards and

recognitions received by PASSAR at the National SAR Congress. Tiadaghton Chapter closed the venue with Mr. Christopher Pearl, Assistant Professor from Lycoming College (www.lycoming.edu), on the Colonial History in Pennsylvania and the impact of Religious Groups impact within the Commonwealth. Professor Pearl’s interests centered on the political, religious, social and legal history of America to 1877 and often addresses salient questions related

to local governance, British imperial politics, and Commonwealth’s formation during the American Revolution.

Pearl, a noted Historian has extensively been published in Academic, Professional and mainstream journals and publications. Some of his writings include, “Pulpits of Revolution: Presbyterian Political Thought in the Era of the American Revolution”, "Our God and Our Guns”: Religion and Politics on the

Revolutionary Frontier”, “The Making of the Trans-Appalachian West: Society, Culture, and Peoples, 1754-1832” and "Such a Spirit of Innovation": The American Revolution and the Creation of States”, to name a few. Mr. Pearl is currently working on a book project on

the American Revolution entitled, Forged in Crisis: The American Revolution and the Rise of a Commonwealth, 1740-1790. His work reflects that the revolution in Pennsylvania rooted in long existing structural problems in the empire, had fundamentally altered governing mechanisms of the Commonwealth while at the same time giving expression to a political ideology emphasizing the “public welfare.” Combining, these two revolutionary developments provided the basis of a powerful regulatory state that would affect the everyday lives of citizens well into the nineteenth century. NATIONAL SOCIETY ANNOUNCES

FEE INCREASES

During the recent SAR Congress Conference, the 2015 Congress voted to increase dues from $30 to $35 for 2016.

Shared by Larry T. Guzy, Treasurer General, “This means 2016 dues are $35. Thus when submitting 2016 dues, they need to reflect the increase.”

This is for regular members. Junior member dues remain at $5 and all other fees remain the same except for Memorial.

The cost for Memorial applications will increase from $380 to $430 because under Bylaw 1, Section 6 (1) that amount is the application fee ($80, no change) plus 10 times the dues.

New Life Member dues will be published soon. The procedures followed by National Staff are not changed from prior years in receipt, or registering of new applications.
