We had so much food that the children were able to sample a huge variety of dishes. They were all very adventurous and tried lots of different foods! Some of the amazing dishes included klaklo from the Ivory Coast, parippu curry from Sri Lanka, deep fried doughsticks from China, rosti from Switzerland, sushi from Japan, pumpkin & chocolate cookies from the US, apple cake from Germany, patacones from Colombia and many more wonderful dishes! We are so thrilled to be working with New Adventures and performing on the stage at Sadler’s Wells! The children have been talking about it ever since the launch assembly and they are so excited. I think parents might be too! We can’t wait for the workshops to start next week. We feature on the New Adventures website http://new- adventures.net/ and on their Instagram page. This amazing, once in a lifetime opportunity has been funded by the PTFA. The actual performance is on Monday 22 nd January at 6.30pm. Details about tickets will be sent out soon. The PTFA have also bought a brand new football kit for our Year 5 and 6 girls’ and boys’ football teams. We have joined the Hackney primary school league and we are hoping the new kit brings us luck! We are so fortunate to have such an active PTFA and engaged and supportive community that is committed to raising substantial amounts of money, which provide these fabulous opportunities and resources. Thank you! Parent power has also resulted in signs being put up in Lancell Street reminding drivers that it is a dead end. The council came to look at the road after complaints of dangerous driving when children were being dropped off. They said this is the first step in the process of ensuring the road is safe. They will monitor the situation and put up speed limit signs if it continues. Tastes of the World was another huge success, with so much delicious food brought in to share. It was so lovely to see what families’ favourite dishes were. It certainly was a journey around the world on a plate! The Winter Fair is on Sunday 3 rd December and we hope to see you there. We also have the EYFS Nativity on the 11 th and 12 th December and the Carol Concert on 13 th December. Ali’s special Christmas lunch is on 14 th December. Busy times ahead! A huge thank you to our families for making this year’s Tastes of the World possible. We had food from over 20 countries - and it was ALL DELICIOUS. Chain Reaction Assembly

As part of Anti-Bullying week, Years 4, 5 and 6

watched a performance from Chain Reaction

    called 'Totally Together'. The performance

included different scenarios addressing how we

can all accept one another and live in a cohesive

    community.

    Kindness Cup

The Kindness Cup has been awarded to both Jonah

    Vittori-Garman (2K) and Douglas Drummond (6J)

Jonah was nominated by Joanne for his fantastic

manners; he is always very polite to all the adults in

school and will stop what he’s doing to offer to help!

Jonah is always kind and caring to everyone around

    him.

Douglas has been noticed by a few members of staff

for being very kind to our youngest children when

they come back into school after lunch. He is always

kind, polite and super nice to everyone in school!

    St Paul’s Cathedral visit

Year 2 went on a great trip to the St. Paul's

Cathedral on Friday 10th Nov. The children had a

great time learning about the history of St. Paul's,

focusing specifically on the year 1666, when the

Great Fire of London took place. The children

looked at artefacts that were retrieved from the fire,

including two statutes whose heads had exploded

in the intense heat! They also learned about role of

Thomas Farriner the baker, Samuel Pepys and

King Charles II, and even carried out some role play

in character! Finally, the children learned that the

Cathedral standing today is in fact London's 5th St

Paul's Cathedral, designed by Sir Christopher

Wren, and they admired the brilliant architect and

interior design. At one point, we got to lie down on

the floor and gaze up at the infamous dome and

beautiful ceiling art, depicting images of earth, sea

and sky! The children used amazing vocabulary to

describe what they thought when lying under the

dome, using words like; amazing, overwhelming,

stunning, mighty and tremendous. Great vocabulary

Year 2! All in all, a great trip had by all. Thanks to

all the children for representing WP so well at the

cathedral, and special thanks to parents and staff

who helped to make the trip a success.

Multi-Skills Festival Ten of our KS1 children had the opportunity to attend a Hackney Multi-Skills Festival at Clissold Leisure Centre on Wednesday 15th November. The children were able to join in a variety of games and activities using lots of different PE equipment and competing against other Hackney schools. Children worked on their movement skills, balance skills and coordination skills, as well as team work, listening and taking turns. The children were wonderfully well-behaved and represented William Patten really well. Well done to all those who took part!

    PTFA Quiz Night

The first ever WP Quiz Night was a great success, with

the top hall full of teams going head to head over

capital cities, books and TV shows! The auction action

was also fierce and the evening raised a grand total of

£1,700 for the PTFA. Thanks to the parents who

helped on the evening or donated prizes, the local

businesses that donated, Peter (WP parent) at Apollo

Nuts for the snacks, Stokey Parents website for

donating Local Buyer’s Club cards and the fab

firefighters at Stokey fire station for offering a private

tour as a prize! A huge thank you to Lisa Buckingham

    for organising the event.

Road Safety Week As part of Road Safety Week, JRSOs, Aidan and Nyah, helped Su Guy from the Learning Trust present a special assembly to raise awareness about Road Safety. They focused particularly on distractions when crossing the road and the damage this can cause.

Black History Month On Tuesday and Wednesday this week, Year 1 and 2 classes kicked off our annual visits to Hackney Museum as part of Black History Month. This year the focus was called ‘Island to Island: Journeys through the Caribbean’. Over 2,000 local primary school children will visit Hackney Museum throughout November to explore Hackney's connections with the Caribbean, inspired by the photographs and personal stories on display. The children, in the role of secret detectives, explored the belongings of two migrants to Hackney, who had come over from Trinidad in the 1950s. They rummaged through suitcases to piece together evidence to work out who the person was. The children also explored objects from the Caribbean and learned a poem by a poet from Guyana who now lives in Hackney. A lovely trip had by all, leaving many of us wishing we could take a trip to the Caribbean ourselves!

If your child plays an instrument then playing in an

ensemble is the most wonderful way to solidify

learning, and give the student a practical application

for their playing, alongside a deeper understanding of

music. Oh, and also just to have more fun playing

    music!!

    Instruments suitable for orchestras:

Violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, oboe, clarinet,

bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone. Others: please ask

at the Barbican last July, the HTO is currently recruiting

for new players. It is open to students who are in Year

4 and above. In addition children must be of Grade 2

performance exam standard or higher. Applicants need

not necessarily have taken a Grade 2 exam but should

be able to sight-read to this level.

    No audition is necessary.

Applicants must either live in the borough of Hackney

    or attend a Hackney school.

    William Patten Orchestra:

For something closer to home, our own WP orchestra

rehearses on Wednesday morning at 8.00am. If your

child knows 3 notes and has a vague concept of how to

read music, they're very, very welcome. As are those

with solid playing and music reading skills! If you're

interested contact: Alison Beckett, Music Co-ordinator

    Dancers in Residence Project Launch

We were visited by two special guests this week from

Matthew Bourne’s ‘New Adventures’. In launch

assemblies in KS1 and KS2 on Monday, Paul and Daisy

told the children about the Dance in Residence project

that will be starting in school next week. The children

learned about Matthew Bourne’s ‘Cinderella’ and how

they would have the exciting opportunity to create

their own telling of the Cinderella story set against the

backdrop of WWII. The children learnt about how

each class’s performance is going to be sequenced to

tell the overall story and culminate in a whole school

performance which will take place at Sadler’s Wells

    Theatre on 22nd January.

The children were understandably very excited about

this amazing opportunity and were shown pictures of

the inside of Sadlers Wells, including the stage and

understood the significance of performing at this

venue. The children even had the opportunity to

practice some choreography in relation to each

scene! We are looking forward to working with Paul

and Daisy throughout the duration of this PTFA-funded

project and as well as being able to work with very

talented, professional dancers, we are also very

excited to be working towards such a big whole-school

    performance in such a well-known and well-respected

    venue.

    Leftover Recipe Competition!

5M are participating in a food waste project. We have been researching the environmental impact of food wastage, measuring the amount of food thrown away by Years 4, 5 and 6 and at lunchtime and thinking about what can be done to prevent food waste. Do you have any family leftover recipes? Please send them to us (via the office) and we may include them in our recipe booklet and our tasting afternoon on the 4th December! What a great Christmas present!

Many happy returns to Milly Meadows, Yusra

    Amerat, Elizabeth Earle, Martha Doxford,

Sonny Oakland, Esther Eason, Harry Ngo,

Lorenza Ponce De Leon Del Villar, Sumire

    Washitani, Maeve Coley, George Haines,

    Jack Hawkins, Cara Callanan-Rhone, Bill

Coley, Nova Rubio Kremers, Rosa Hsieh and

Alfie Dyer who recently celebrated their

    special day.

    Year 1 Maths workshops

Maths workshops took place for both classes in

Year 1 this week. The workshops were led by

Asima and Craig on Thursday and by Natalie

and Craig on Friday. The workshops focused on

place value and how the understanding of new

mathematical concepts is supported by concrete

resources and tactile learning, using drawings

    and pictorial representations, before more

abstract forms are introduced. This approach is

called CPA (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) and is

an integral part of teaching for mastery. Teaching

for mastery itself means that children develop a

deep, rather than superficial, understanding of

    mathematics with opportunities to develop

    fluency, reasoning and problem solving

embedded in lessons. This is part of a whole

school approach to teaching maths which

originates from East Asia and is in line with the

    2014 National Curriculum.

After a short introduction, parents and carers

were joined by their children and were able to

take part in collaborative activities indicative of

the Year 1 maths curriculum; focusing on

    fluency, reasoning and problem solving

throughout the session. The workshops were

well attended and it was great to see the children

working so well with their parents and carers as

well as with each other during both morning

    sessions.

    National Maths Competition

The Year 6 team which represented the school in

round 1 of the National Young Mathematicians

Awards at the Explore Learning centre on Essex

Road earlier this month, are successfully through

to round 2! Amy, Ethan, Lola and Mika

demonstrated excellent team work and problem

solving skills as they worked together on a never

seen before mathematical problem in round

    1. Round 2 takes place on 29th November and

following this, the 5 national top teams will

compete in the final which to be held at the

University of Cambridge in December. We are

keeping our fingers crossed, but however well

the team do, they should all be very proud of

their achievements so far and for having

    represented the school so well.
