Beware of the Ides of February! I came to school today and everyone looked like old people. It is so weird. Or maybe the faculty and staff are celebrating the 100 th day of school. I love to see everyone celebrating the milestones of SPX. Parking: I have received complaints from our neighbors about parents parking in front of their driveways! We cannot do that. Even for a second! It prevents them from getting to work to their appointments. They have also brought to my attention that parents are leaving empty coffee cups and other trash on the ground. We all need to do a better hob at being more respectful to our neighbors. Thank you. Recently, we have had many inquiries into why we list “tardy days” on the report card, or half day absent for doctor appointments. The simple answer is that we are mandated by the state to report accurately every student’s attendance. It is a legal document that every teacher certifies and signs at the end of the year. I hope this clears up any confusion. Spelling Bee Results: Jared Paredes will represent St. Pius X at the San Diego County Spelling Bee on March 23. This will be Jared's second year as school champion and representative! Congratulations, Jared! Natalie Brenes took second place. The winners of the 7th Grade Bee were Julian Ramirez, 1st place, and Alexa Grunst, 2 nd place. The winners of the 8th Grade Bee were Marial Batangan, 1st place, and Donovin Bocalan, 2nd place. The 8th Grade team consisted of: Jared, Ethan Delacruz, Brian Ugale, Marial, Natalie, Taryn Lukasik, Augustina Estrada, Carlo Oropeza, Donovin, and Audrey Burkhart. The 7th Grade team consisted of: Julian, Alexa, Marissa Todd, Paulina Williams, Cyndirelle Caluza, Jack Estevane, Allyson Diaz, Amelia Valdez, Antonio Carvajal, and Noemi Cabrera. the patriot february 15, 2019

Dear St. Pius X Families and new members to the family, I need to make a few announcements before I send you on your way to our new registration method. My first announcement is that we have implemented a modest tuition rate increase. Like every other business out there, our operating costs are on the rise. This year, I want to award our teachers and staff with a pay increase. They work hard to educate your child and are dedicated to the success of the school. The other announcement is that we are switching to an online only registration process. We have uploaded all of our registration documentation onto the Gradelink platform. Returning families will use their current login user and password information. Once logged in, click on the “Enroll Me” tab and provide required information. Please complete all forms. For new families, please use this link to open a Gradelink account: https://secure.gradelink.com/424/enrollment The major benefit of switching to online method of registration is that once you enter your information, it will be there until your child graduates from St. Pius X! Next year, you will only need to edit any information that may have changed. If you have any questions, please give us a call. Thank you, Mr. Turskey, Mrs. Lopez, and Mrs. Hernandez

Dear St. Pius X Families, The news is getting out! St. Pius X is doing something right. We have had many inquiries since our open house. Most of our prospective parents are referrals from you! Keep proclaiming the good that St. Pius X does! It will help us fill our school and propel us into a solid future. Mr. Turskey

What an audience Jesus has in today's Gospel! "A great crowd of his disciples and a large number of people from all over Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon." Disciples, pagans, and devout Jews gathered together to hear Jesus speak in the Sermon on the Mount. All of these people had something in common. God was someone to be bargained with, and if God liked you, you were rewarded with good fortune. This Sunday, Jesus tells us a different story. "Woe to you who are rich, who are filled now, who laugh, when all

speak well of you. Blessed are you who are poor, you who are now hungry, when people hate you and when they exclude you and insult you." Jesus completely flips the script on what it means to be blessed by God. What

he proclaims as "woe" are states of life we often strive for, and "blessed" are the states we work hard to avoid!

Jesus is concerned with the kingdom of God and the world to come, not the typical structures of power and privilege. The word "now" appears often in these statements. Why? If you are well "now," that's beside the point. To be rich in this life has no direct bearing on your immortal soul. If you're struggling "now," that's not an indication that God has forgotten you or that - in light of eternity - you're worse off than someone else. In fact, it could be an indicator that you're enduring something that will bring you to a place of greater, eternal joy in the future.

This Sunday, consider your priorities. Who do we reject as not blessed, and thereby inflict woe upon ourselves? When we encounter difficult situations in our own lives, do we see them as opportunities to remember God and lean on His mercy and grace?

Father Jay

EDGE: Catholic middle school youth ministry program. EDGE provides a safe, fun place for youth to find solid Catholic community, to get answers to their questions about faith, and, most importantly, to experience Jesus in a profound and personal way. Edge resources speak to the physical, psychological, cognitive, relational, and spiritual maturation of middle school youth. Edge resources make it easier for youth ministers to plan out their semesters of Edge Night, retreats, and to train a team of adults, the Core Team, to assist them in the ministry. The resources present Catholic teaching in a way that young people can understand.
