What is an OSTEOPATH?
• Highly skilled manual therapist with primary care role

• They are trained to assess people who have associated medical conditions

Brief History of Osteopathy
• Osteopathy is actually the oldest Manual Therapy, predating Chiropractic and Physiotherapy!• Andrew Taylor Still -1800s American Civil war surgeon who saw the failure of medicine of the day• Developed a new system of healing based on the interaction between the body’s structure and function

What will you earn as an Osteopath?
• Typically, full time graduate Osteopaths (35 hours/week) earn about $35-45K
• Physiotherapy (hospital) - $36K1
• Occupational Therapist - $37K1
• Podiatry (hospital) $21K1

Where is the Osteopathy course @ VU located?
• 301 Flinders Lane, in the heart of the CBD• Some Year 1 subjects in laboratories at St Albans
(1 day/week)

How do I Apply for Osteopathy?
ALL APPLICANTS MUST APPLY THROUGH VTAC
Except – current VU students (can apply internally – check VU
website for details)

Year 12 Applicants
• 2010 - ENTER of 87 or better
• Subject pre-requisites• Chemistry• English• Either Physics or any Mathematics

Non Year 12 Applicants
• Year 12 prerequisite studies still apply
• Grade Point Average (GPA)• 2010 GPA ≥5.5 (out of 7)• Complete the personal information
(pi) form
• Your ENTER may also be considered

What if I haven’t done….
• Chemistry?
• Open Learning Chemistry, 80 hours,web-based course - Unilearn
• Chemistry at TAFE / uni• Needs to be completed by end of 2010

well enough in year 12?
• Do other University study• Do as well as possible• Area of study is less important than academic
success (aim HIGH to increase GPA)• You may choose to do related study
