October 2016 The Pastor’s Point
Sunday morning Bible study classes (Sunday School) have been part of growing churches for two centuries. Lately, however, many people have disregarded Sunday morning Bible study and underestimated its importance. Some people do not believe that Sunday School is beneficial, while others believe that Sunday School is only for children. So, why is Sunday School important?
For starters, PBC Bible Study Classes on Sundays provide the place where you really learn how to dig into God’s Word. Have you ever heard your Pastor say something or reference a passage of scripture that left you scratching your head in wonder? (Don’t answer that!) You can’t stand up in the service to ask him to clarify. After the service, you may not have the chance to ask. So how do you get your question answered? Go to a Sunday morning PBC Bible Study Class! Sunday School is the place where you can dialog and interact with others about the scriptures, ask questions, express doubts, and get clarification on things that confuse you.
Second, PBC Bible Study Classes are important because they provide a place to make friends, establish relationships, and build fellowship in the church. Since PBC Bible Study Classes are typically small (less than 25 people), they are the perfect environment for engaging in real
conversations about the Bible, God, and life. By engaging in dialog with other members of the class, listening to their questions and hearing the answers, we learn that we are not alone in our struggles in living out our faith in a world that is increasingly troubled. Some of the friendships we make in Sunday morning Bible studies will last a lifetime. Those friendships will also help keep us accountable and connected to the Body of Christ, especially during times of storm and crisis.
If you are not in a Sunday morning PBC Bible Study Class, call the church office and ask for a list of our great Bible study classes. They begin each Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m.

Get Plugged In!
Is your child plugged in? Are you plugged in? Is your child growing in their relationship with Christ? Are you growing in your own relationship with Him? Are you serving others in Christ’s name? Is your child learning to serve? There is nothing more beautiful each Sunday than to see families worship-ing together and I love watching this happen each week. However, I do notice that many of the families worshiping and praising God together are not yet plugged into a Bible Study class. The smaller scale of a class gives you and your child the opportunity to delve into God’s word through study and discussion with others. Studying with leaders and others helps you and your child to grow your relationship with Christ. In addition to the Sunday morning classes, our Wednesday night Kids Choir and Adventure Kids gives children the opportunity to learn and grow even more.
What better way for children to learn how to serve than by observing adults leading and serving in all the children’s
activities. Give me a call if you would like to join the amazing team of PBC Kids Leaders!
Mark your calendars for our annual Trunk R Treat. Sunday, October 30 at 5:00 PM we want to fill our back parking area with trunks of all designs! We will also have a giant slide, cotton candy, snow cones, popcorn and games. A signup sheet will be at the PBC Kids Check-In counter, so sign up to host a trunk or volunteer to help in some other area.

October is here. That means leaves will be turning colors and fall will be ushered in. The plans for our lives are often the same. They hit us like a rushing wind, look pretty, often change and fade away. Just like the leaves on a tree. Proverbs 19: 20-21 (NLT) states, “Get all the advice and instruction you can, so you will be wise the rest of your life. You can make many plans, but the LORD’S purpose will prevail.” Often youth live for the day. What does this mean? It means that they do not take in to account the end result of the choices they make. The Youth Minister in Sylacauga, Alabama, where I grew up, told this statement to our youth group that I have always remembered. He said bluntly, “The choices that you make today will determine the lifestyles that you live tomorrow!” Boy! Is that statement true. Students often fail to think how their choices impact their future. Just like the author of the Scripture mentioned at the beginning said, we must get “all the advice and instruction we can.” In the same way the PBC Student Ministry’s goal is to help give all the advice and instruction of God’s word to students so they can develop wise plans. This is done through our Wednesday night services, Sunday Morning Bible Study, and our Home groups that meet on Sunday night. So if you are a student or a parent of a student in grades 6th-12th we invite you to come check us out and receive “all the advice and instruction you can.”

October is the best time to get involved in the music ministry here at PBC. All of our various organizations are busy at work and are in need of new workers looking for the opportunity to serve. There is a place for you and your family. You will be blessed as you serve God, make new friendships, and point others to the cross. We have several musical groups where you can get involved. Our Celebration Choir is just getting started on our Christmas musical. We need more singers and drama crew members to make this the best musical ever. The only requirement is a willing spirit and God will use you. Our Instrumental ensemble is for current or former band and orchestra members who want to use their instrument to glorify God. Even if your instrument has been in “moth balls” for decades, you can rekindle your love of playing your flute, tuba, or anything in-between. Our handbell choir requires eleven people who can read a little music. As you learn the music with the other members, you develop friendships and improve your musicianship. Our children's choir is also beginning work on their Christmas program and is in need of more singers and actors from 4 year olds through 5th grade. They meet every Wednesday even-ing as part of our Children’s ministry. There are many other ways to get involved, but it begins by calling or emailing me so we can see how you and your family can be used by God in our music ministry. Please give me a call, drop me an email, or find me at church so we can discuss how you might get “plugged” into serving God through music.
Upward Sports
Our Upward Sports have been a huge part of our outreach programs at Palmetto Baptist Church for many years! This year we started Upward Soccer. We had 46 students to play. Not bad for the first year! Many of these children, parents, visitors and volunteers do not have a church home. We encourage them to join us in worship on Sundays and all the other activities we have here at PBC. Our soccer fields have been well maintained by Richard Munn, Roger Smith and Dwayne Knox. We appreciate these men and all they have done during soccer season. Sharon Johnston, Virginia Munn, Pat Nixon, Rosalyn Stov-er, Wendy James, and Rebecca Sims have a kept our concession stand going and we want to thank these ladies for their help! Please come join us and cheer on the soccer players! Continue to pray that we will be the blessing to each of them that God wants us to be and transform lives through Christ. Upward Basketball is right around the corner! Evaluations will be October 17,18 & 24. Practices will start November 28th. More information coming soon!
